Acer Predator Helios 300 (2019) or Asus ROG Strix G531GU ?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:02 PM PDT

I wonder which one is much better than from the above two. Both of them are in closer price ranges in my country. Here I mostly consider the cooling systems and screen.

    Asus ROG Strix G531GU

    Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (12M Cache, up to 4.50 GHz)
    8GB DDR4 2666MHZ
    PCIE NVME 512GB M.2 SSD
    15.6" FHD 1920x1080 IPS Level 120Hz
    NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 1660ti, 6GB GDDR6

    +Free Gladius II mouse

    Acer Predator Helios 300

    Intel® Core™ i7-9750H (12M Cache, up to 4.50 GHz)
    DRAM DDR4 16GB
    1TB Hard Disk + FREE 256GB M.2 NVME SSD
    15.6" FHD 1920x1080 IPS 144Hz 3ms
    NVIDIA® GeForce GTX1660ti, 6GB GDDR6

These are the laptop specification which I consider here. The Acer predator has better specs over Asus ROG. But the Asus ROG laptop has a dust-free cooling system and more heat pipes inside the laptop. another one is I saw in some reviews the Acer predator has noticeably screen bleeding. So, guys, I would like to know which one really good along with these factors. thank you.

Lightweight (<5lb) moderate gaming laptop with good battery life and a high resolution (1440p+) display

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:24 PM PDT

I'm computer savvy but I havent bought a laptop for a while so I'm just getting back in touch with what's out - hoping someone who has been paying closer attention can help guide me.

13-15" display good, I'm not price sensitive, and totally fine with waiting if something might be coming out this year/next. I do some gaming and a lot of multitasking with fairly taxing programs for work.

My current dual core i5 2016 Macbook Pro is painful to use for my work stuff even with 16GB ram (i think a quad core laptop would have been a better choice), pretty unusable for gaming, and I'm down to switch to Windows after bitter taste from Mac OS Catalina. But I really love the high res display for work stuff (I dont care for gaming) so I don't really want to lose that.

I'm hoping that some new AMD Renoir laptop might fit the bill (Zephyrus G14 comes close, though the lack of a camera is funny and the refresh rate on the 1440p model is a little slow). Preferably something that doesn't look like a gaming spaceship, but I can deal lol.

I noticed most laptops with a 120hz+ screen is 1080p though so that's kinda frustrating. And not sure how current/next gen integrated graphics can perform. Maybe an eGPU is an option too? I don't need to game on the go much lol.

    Any suggestions?

Need a laptop for graphic design and gaming, as well as work.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:58 AM PDT

I'm big on drawing and recently decided to go in to graphic design, so I'd like to get a laptop that I can use for it. I'd probably need a touch screen or 2-in-1 so that I can draw directly on it.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Up to $1600 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good battery life so that I can work/game on it for a while. Performance and build quality are key, I would like it run as cool and quiet as possible. I'v had one in the past that would heat up to like 94 degrees Fahrenheit with fans that sounded like a jet plane and it was awful.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm petite so lighter is better, probably nothing over 4.5 lbs.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13"-15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, photo editing and drawing software (Adobe stuff)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Apex, CSGO, Minecraft, and various games on steam. I'd like to play them at optimal settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want something reliable and that will last me a long time with a nice vibrant screen. I think a touch screen would be good so I can draw directly on it. I'm not against any of the things mentioned here, mainly just want it to last me a long time.I'd like it to have a keyboard with adjustable lights

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I mainly want this laptop to last me nice long while. I don't want it to run super hot when gaming, and I'd like to stay on the cheaper side but prepared to pay up to $1600 max

    Laptop for Student <1000 euros

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:02 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

United Kingdom or France, budget flexible but preferably not much more than 1000 euros (don't mind spending less if I don't have too though!).

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life, build quality, performance, form factor (though I don't really want a 2-in-1: it's a feature I have currently I never use and it just adds weight and cost)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Extremely important, I would be carrying it around daily.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    N/A

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like some kind of biometric unlocking (face ID or finger-print) for quick startup. I would mainly be typing word documents on this laptop so I would appreciate a decent keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I plan to use this laptop mainly for university (taking notes, research, and essays) as well as casual browsing/youtube/Netflix. As such, I don't think I really need incredible graphics or processing speed, but rather a light device with a great battery life that's fast for simple things like browsing and typing documents.

UK/EU: Gaming Laptop potentially good for music production

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £1500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Build Quality - Performance - Battery Life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not as much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A."15, open to 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, then music production/editing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? AC: Odyssey stable 60fps min Ultra / Cyberpunk 2077 60fps min Ultra
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)Possibly the most sober looking black laptop. I personally can't get over the "gamerz MLG" designs all over. LEDs are fine since you can turn them off though. Might need a thunderbolt on top of the USBs too I guess.

I'm looking for a laptop to do a huge step from where I am now (medium-end laptop with a 940M which is still serving me very well with loads of tweaks here and there).
I also make music/do management stuff (Office/Google) but no chance I'm spending this amount for a MacBook Pro as much as I'm tempted. That being said, because I'm gonna use CPU heavy programs etc. I need 1TB SSD OR a laptop where I can add extra SSD/HDD.

I'm not sure if I need to wait another 6 months. There's no rush but I'm on here because the more I was looking, the more I opened Pandora's boxes like refresh rates, displays, 4k monitors, AMD vs. Intel and I just got plain confused.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Gaming/Light Art/Work Laptop ~$800 CAD?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:33 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $800 CAD or, ideally, less.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Possibly, if it will last ~3+ years.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Battery Life & Build Quality would be higher priority
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Lighter is ideal, but ultimately doesn't matter too much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The Sims 4, The Sims 3, Adobe Photoshop CS3 (old), MS Office, possible streaming via Twitch/recording YouTube videos with Streamlabs OBS and my webcam, using Zoom, YouTube/Netflix; unsure if I will use video editing but I use Shotcut video editor.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
The Sims 4 (and ALL expansions) at highest/max settings (this is priority); The Sims 3 on highest settings would also be nice
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard; durable (I would like this to last at least 3 years); touchscreen or tablet/pen mode might be nice (if that lets me draw on it in photoshop?) but ultimately not important; Windows pre-loaded
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd like to be able to use my laptop as a replacement computer for when I'm unable to be at my desk. Something I can use in bed, or a train/coffeeshop (once safe), carry around, etc. The biggest priorities would be playing The Sims 4 and working remotely. I would like something fast that can multitask.

    Thank you in advance!

I know a few people that have Dell XPS and they have been satisfied. Right now, I am looking at the following deal: https://www.costco.com/dell-xps-13-2-in-1-touchscreen-laptop---10th-gen-intel-core-i7---1200p.product.100513808.html

Is it any good? Is the 1200p screen a concern.

I am open to suggestions however. My number one priority is to have a laptop that will feel fast and last for the next 4-5 years.

Something for browsing and streaming, etc..

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $500-800 (US)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Definitely, as long as the condition is good!

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I really want a 2-in-1 like with the rotating screen for sure. Battery life just needs to be decent, I will mostly use it around the house.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      I don't care that much.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      13-14in ish.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not to any considerable degree. I do draw as a hobby (with Paint Tool SAI) and would like to run very light games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Pretty much just retro games and rpgmaker type stuff. Not a pc gamer at all!

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      -Windows.

    • BACKLIT KEYBOARD!!

    • 6-8gb ram, 256gb SSD (I'd be ok with a smaller SSD or an HHD if I can add on my own SSD.)

    • I kinda want the option to use a mini dock/hub to hook up a monitor+keyboard. so maybe a functional usb c?

    • Something NOT silver (unless its super dark) pls, I think it looks tacky/ugly.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't use a computer for much nowadays so I'm really just looking for something for browsing, streaming shows/movies, and the stuff I mentioned earlier.

Is your touchpad surface silent or does it make a "shuffle' sound? Are touchpads consistent across the whole brand?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 01:42 AM PDT

I would appreciate if people would tell me if their touchpad is silent or not when you move your finger around and what brand laptop you have. I had a Toshiba many years ago and now have an old Lenovo and both were completely silent, it never crossed my mind the touchpad can have this "rough" surface making it audible. Then I got a Dell form work and it has this rought surface, hp pavillon as well. It really annoys me. I wonder if touchpads are consistent across the whole brand because I need to buy a laptop online and can't manually test it. So I'd appreciate if you could share:)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      -silent touchpad

    Lawyer needing a laptop rec

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 06:03 PM PDT

Laptop for an attorney. We have desktops at my firm and I'm increasingly finding myself needing to work remotely. Ideally, I'd like it to be competent for at least five-six years.

Uses: client mgmt software, Microsoft office, adobe.

    ~$1000-$1500 range.

    Won't use it for gaming.

    Screen size 11-14 inches.

    Thickness doesn't matter.

    $1200 USA, decent GPU

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:50 PM PDT

@Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Under 1200 preferred, but I'm flexible. Located in USA. @Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes I am.

@How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? quality -> performance -> battery -> form @How important is weight and thinness to you? Not the biggest deal.

@Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

@Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do mostly programming and video editing, a ML hobbyist. Pytorch is what I normally use. @If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a @Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd really like something with at least a GTX 1060. A nice keyboard isn't bad either. @Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a good quality workhorse that isn't too expensive as I'm just a hobbyist with programming. I haven't upgraded since 2014, so I'm a little out of the loop.

    Thanks in advanced!
