Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen Wifi/Thunderbolt Issues Posted: 02 May 2020 06:52 AM PDT I've been having ongoing issues with my X1 Carbon 7th Gen in relation to the Thunderbolt and/or Wifi working. I'm running Linux Mint 19.3. I've confirmed I have no firmware updates available, have installed all package upgrades, etc. It started a couple of months ago with Kernel 5.3.28. All of a sudden my Thunderbolt dock stopped charging or establishing an ethernet connection. I ran That didn't help. I then upgraded to Kernel 5.3.0-40 which didn't work well at all (Thunderbolt dock didn't work and Wifi adapter wasn't recognized. I then proceeded to try some unsupported Kernels until I found that 5.4.23 worked and fixed everything. The dock supplied power, display, ethernet connection, and my wifi was working when disconnected from the dock. In the past few weeks, the dock has again stopped charging and is somehow related to some DNS issues I'm experiencing. Prior to plugging into the dock, my Wifi works fine, then after plugging in the dock both my ethernet connection and wifi are enabled, but for some reason DNS won't work unless I turn off the WiFi connection (I can ping external IP addresses but can't ping a URL). I've begun troubleshooting and have run out of options. I have checked and verified I have no firmware updates available. Here's the output: The last line "No releases found for device..." hasn't appeared in the past and I'm not sure what its referring to. I've also installed the latest Mint supported Kernel, 5.3.0-51, and have installed all of the package upgrades. The dock still doesn't charge, my Wifi Adapter isn't being recognized, but my external monitors and ethernet connection work. Short of trying out additional unsupported Kernels to see if one works, I'm out of thoughts of what to do next. Sorry if this jumped around a bit. I have pretty detailed notes around all of the things I've tried so if additional clarification is needed on anything let me know. Surely someone else is running Mint on an X1 Carbon 7th gen without issues. I expect I'm missing something because I can't find very much recent talk about firmware issues on these. It seems whatever I try I either have a working dock and no Wifi, Wifi but no working dock, or neither work. Thanks for any support you can provide. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2020 01:07 AM PDT So after reading this post, I'm quite confused as to what is the best practice for installing and managing apps on Linux. I myself run Ubuntu, so I guess I've been using snap to install programs? How should I install programs instead and what are the generally agreed upon best practices? Any clarification would be great, Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Why I can't install .deb archives on Ubuntu anymore Posted: 02 May 2020 06:09 AM PDT I updated to 20.04 LTS a few days ago, and I tried to install a few things, but now, everytime I install a .deb file and click on it, the file just opens as a Compacted Folder. Is there something I could do to solve this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 May 2020 01:59 PM PDT The world has changed and I had a raspberry pi 4 with me so I installed Manjaro Arm on it and also installed gitea on it. I can work with gitea just fine but only on LAN. How do I let my friend access it through the Internet? I also want that raspberry pi to act as an cloud storage for my friends. How can I SSH to my home PC remotely without a router? Posted: 02 May 2020 07:23 AM PDT Hey guys. So I have a really old PC (Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HDD) back at home running Arch with Xfce. My Dad just uses it for browsing, watching movies and editing some docs. It's his first time using one. Sometimes, I help him by automating something but I have to email the scripts to him and manually guide him step by step. It's all very tedious for the both of us. (He's not very computer-literate). I thought about SSH and researched a bit. Everything pointed to port forwarding through a router but we don't have a router or even a broadband connection set up (Dad and Mon don't really need it). The PC uses cellular data through USB tethering. So, is there any workaround? How do go about this? (Pardon my English. Not my native language). [link] [comments] |
I'm new on linux, what distro should i get? Posted: 02 May 2020 10:01 AM PDT I'm coming from windows, and I would like a distro that is complete and at the same time simple to use, I was using pop_os, but I didn't like it very much, I just couldn't copy a folder where I want it because it asks for permission for everything, so, I removed it, what do you recommend? Posted: 02 May 2020 03:27 PM PDT So I think I am ready to make the leap to Linux. 99% sure I'll choose Ubuntu as it seems to be recommended for beginners pretty much everywhere. The one thing that is holding me back is that I need a program (MCCPilotLog)to run on Linux that is only available on Windows and Mac. I have read about a program called "Wine" that seemingly enables Windows programs to run on Linux. Is it really that simple? Just download the program and run it as if it was on a Windows machine? One issue is that this software is no longer supported as the developer have moved to a subscription based model for their new software. The version I have runs fine on IOS and Windows. Would anyone be able to advise if this software would run in Wine on Linux? Or are there any pilots that use this software on Linux? Thank you for your help. [link] [comments] |

Can I Change Panel Font by Editing gtkrc File? Posted: 02 May 2020 02:18 PM PDT Using Xubuntu 18.04 with XFCE 4.12.3 I would like to change the font for the panel but am not sure how to do it exactly. Before I used to edit .css files on Ubuntu, but this looks slightly different. Since I have Numix as active Window Manager theme, can I go into Numix gtk-2.0 folder and edit gtkrc file? If so, is this what I'm looking for?

Posted: 02 May 2020 01:47 PM PDT Hi, I've bought my Lenovo laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 330 with GTX 1050 and Intel i5+) and I've been experiencing seriously sluggishness with Windows, be it opening folders on occasion or even restarting the darn laptop itself... So I thought I will try to switch over to Linux and see how that could work. I enjoy Linux and I would plan to use the laptop mainly for programming rather than gaming as I have my main PC for that. Trying out live elementary OS (my desired choice) from the USB already gives promising results. Things feel somewhat smoother etc which is rather odd because regardless of how many times I reinstalled Windows, the issue persisted? Either way! This isn't to talk about this issue. My problem here is that the laptop features Intel Optane. I did a little digging here and there and found that intel Optane is not supported for Linux, which is a shame. My original plan was to have Linux be main OS, but since (correct me if I'm wrong) I can't use Optane in the way it's meant to be used like for Windows I was going to make dual boot but what is there to use Optane for on Linux? What are my options? Did something change and you can use Optane and its speed with Linux? Or at this point should I just stick with Windows? Could anyone advise my options here? Thanks! XAMPP: Cannot access from other devices on same network Posted: 02 May 2020 01:45 PM PDT I want to test out a webpage I made on my phone and tablet and I am unable to connect to the IP address on my phone and tablet. I remember I was able to do this with XAMPP on Windows. I do know my computers IP by using I am also on the same network as my computer. I even tried connecting my tablet using a ethernet to USB-C adapter and my computer is hooked up using a ethernet cable, both on the same network and still no luck. Any help will be most appreciated! Posted: 02 May 2020 04:57 AM PDT I am always unsure about how safely i can create a new partition on a used drive. In my case I have a 1TB SSD with Manjaro Linux installed on it. My plan is to test Pop!_Os in a new small partition on that drive. Can I safely shrink my home partition to create another system partition for Pop!_OS? Or is there even a better way to fully test another Linux Distro alongside another? Thanks for any help! (If you need further information, just ask) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 May 2020 07:32 AM PDT Hello! Edit: I tried this it87-dkms-git package from the AUR. It's forked from what I use below to manually install it. Installing the AUR package doesn't give me fan speed and temp readings the same way that manually installing it gives me. Important info:
I've done a ton of searching and am 90% confident the thing I'm doing is the easiest way for me to get fan speed and temp readings from my Asus PRIME B450-Plus motherboard. That searching lead me to this post on the kubuntu forums, which points to this github repo for it87 drivers. If you know of a better way for me to get fan/temp readings please let me know. Here are the steps I followed:
This works great and adds
Once I follow the steps above, that
And after a bit of looking through that I've matched up with number goes to which physical fan or set of fans. All of those steps worked great when I was using Ubuntu, and the changes persisted. Now when I restart Manjaro I have to:
In order for How can I set it up so that this is a persistent change? Or...if you want to really blow my mind, could you point me towards a better way to handle being able to get my fan and temp readings? I did a lot of looking around and it seems the B450 motherboard series has yet to wind up with decent linux driver support. Open to any thoughts or ideas. I appreciate your time! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2020 09:43 AM PDT TL;DR: Hardware: RPi4 4GB/32 GB SD card+USB mass storage volume | OS: Rasbian Lite | Question: Need a VMS package for IP cams, ability to live view on a mobile device preferred. I asked this over in r/Raspberrypi but it was immediately removed. My dad's a techie and Ham radio enthusiast and is putting up a tower. I'm a tech for an alarm company and install and service video recording equipment on a weekly basis. I've done a bit of googling, though maybe I'm not asking the right questions because I'm getting a lot of results for USB webcam tutorials. I'm looking for a full VMS that can serve clients live video on pc and mobile. I've got a pretty sweet IP cam to use, old "junk" from an upgrade. It's a ptz with a panoramic attachment. So 1 stream from the ptz and 4 from the panorama. We'll be building this on a RPi4 4GB with 32 GB SD card and probably will use a USB thumb drive for the video storage volume. He doesn't really want or need a lot of stored video, which is why I figured that a USB stick would work well enough; they're cheap and readily available and easily replaced if it fails. I just don't want to be constantly overwriting video data on the SD card. Closest thing I've found is Shinobi CE for free but I don't think there's a mobile viewer available. Other than that, it seems like it would do what we want, i.e. remote viewing through a web browser. Not sure if it would work in a mobile browser. Any ideas folks? [link] [comments] |
