[Tech issues] HP ENVY X360 brand new

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:54 PM PDT

I recently bought a HP ENVY X360. I mean it is probably a month old but I have rarely used it. I have noticed several issues and I wanted to know if they were Windows issues or specific to me/my laptop

1). When I put my laptop to sleep, everything shuts down (browsers, etc.,) and then my keyboard does not register my hitting it. I have to hit the key several times. The light for the caps lock doesn't show, nor does the lights for the light-up keyboard feature. The windows location lock screen goes to a default windows image instead of the random locations.

2). Does leaving a laptop shut down warrant it to be dead? My cheaper, crappier laptop wouldn't do that. Even if it's fully charged and I shut it down for a few days, it needs charged.

    • I have warranty and will hopefully take it to a service repair soon. I'm hoping the virus doesn't cause any issues with that! I'll try edit if I can think of anything else.

    - Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Opinion on Laptop I just bought / configured Acer Aspire 5, Intel i5-10210U, Geforce MX250, 20 GB DDR4 rAM, 512GB SSD + 240 GB SSD for $676

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:30 PM PDT

    So I just bought a refurbished/re-certified Acer Aspire 5 - 15.6" Laptop Intel i5-10210U 1.6GHz. Full HD (1920x1080), and has an NVIDIA Geforce MX250.

It has 8GB RAM which I'm upgrading by adding a 16GB stick for a total of 20 GB. (Laptop mobo has 4GB soldered in if I recall correctly)

It also comes with a 512GB SSD, and I will be adding a 240 GB SSD.

The laptop was $580 before taxes Hardware upgrades were $96 before taxes

    All in $735 post tax.

I just want/need a decent sleek laptop with good specs to replace my old HP w/ an i3 and wonky track pad and terrible battery life. Based on my research this was probably the best price I could get for something similarly spec'd out.

I occasionally do office work (excel etc), photoshop, lightroom and would consider gaming but I don't have too much time for it (but it's nice to have the MX250).

I just ordered these things today so I might still have time to cancel if you guys think there's a better deal for the price.

Low use laptop, but having two tabs open in chrome makes the cpu jump to 100% then back to 18%, as well as the disk?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:21 PM PDT

By all means, im computer illiterate. I only have a laptop, never really had a desktop. I dont really game, and dont really do much on my laptop. In fact it was turned off for a solid month at one point.

The most i do on my laptop is run chrome and word at the same time, but it always runs so slow.

It is an acer aspire, less than a year old.

When i opened a second chrome tab, i decided to check the task manager stuff to see if anything was running in the background, and it was showing both tbe CPU and Disk bouncing up to 100%, which i dont assume is good? There also seems to be 10 chrome lines?

Ive been watching the list of processes(?) And the Feedback Hub at one point said it was using 34mb of memory? And the Antimalware service executable is always pretty high up on the list.

I have windows 10, its an acer aspire 3 a315-21, it has an AMD A4 sticker on it. I use the microsoft security essentials, but i dont really check my email on my laptop, or browsr the web except for school stuff.

I dont know whats supposed to be normal for laptops, and google results arent really being helpful.

anyone have experience using Solidworks Flow Simulation or ANSYS on a laptop?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 12:38 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop and the specs I'm seeing blow some of my company's aging desktop PCs out of the water. I tend to do a lot of single-threaded Solidworks simulations, but now we may spool up some ANSYS licenses. I'm hoping to be able to leverage my personal laptop to make my workload a bit quicker.

Does anyone here have experience shopping for Solidworks laptops that will see heavy, prolonged simulation workloads?

    I have a few questions:

    1. Is Boost Clock going to be helpful for sustained simulations?

    2. What common benchmarking is closest to my situation? I often see things like Cinebench, but I honestly don't know how the loads compare.

    3. Any issues I should be aware of in getting Solidworks working well on a laptop?

    4. What specs are going to matter the most for prolonged, often single-threaded, CFD and FEA simulation?

    Thank you

Do I need a docking station? Better setup for 2 keyboards?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 10:01 AM PDT

Do I need a docking station? Better setup for 2 keyboards?

I have a 2 monitor setup, but I also like to connect my laptop at times. My laptop won't charge off the USB-C port, so I don't know that I need a dock unless there is something I'm not thinking of. Currently I plug in the HDMI and power cords, then press the HDMI switch if I want my Laptop screen on my monitor. Any advice on how to make this setup better? Not sure if a USB switch would be better than just using 2 keyboards. Thanks for any tips.

    QHD resolution on UHD laptops

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:59 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking for 17.3. QHD laptop with 8 core processor but it's almost impossible to find.

I am thinking.. if I get UHD laptop and set QHD resolution.. would it be fine? Or it would be worse then "natural" QHD laptop since on UHD laptop, QHD is not it's native resolution?

    Thank you

Can someone please help me decide?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Hello everyone! It's my first time around here. So I hope I've posted this in the correct section. Anyway, I'm looking for a laptop that can handle a lot of power and I mean a lot. I want to become a professional game artist and it needs to render complex 3D game characters. unfortunately desktops are out of the question since I need to bring it to school.

So I was looking at these options:

✨The new Surface Book 3 has just been announced and with a 1660 TI this might not be enough power to handle complex 3D environments. There is also an option for a Quadro RTX 3000 but as far as I've seen its only available for companies and not for consumer purchase (or at this point in time) The pen is definitely a great tool for sculpting. (whyyy no black tho)wrrrryy

✨The Zephyrus Duo 15. It would definitely have the advantage with its GPU and CPU over the SB3. With its 2080 SUPER-MQ and going up to i9 (no ryzen unf.) although I wonder if the second smaller screen will have pen input.

✨The Razer Blade studio 15 (or the upcoming 17") With the Nvidia RTX Quadro 5000 and has 4K Oled display.

✨The Acer concept D 7 Ezel Pro. With also a RTX 5000 Quadro I think the wacom pen is a really nice feature as well as the ezel stand. It doesn't have RGB keyboard as the razer and Zephyrus has. Which I really would have liked.

I would like to hear your thoughts 😊 thanks in advance. If you have any questions please leave them in the comments.

    Surface Book 2 or 3?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 02:26 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a 2-in-1 laptop for school, but I also would like to do some gaming as well. Due to the kind of coursework I'll be doing, I'd like to be able to detach my screen to use with a stylus as a tablet, which is why I'm after a surface book. I was just wondering whether it would be worth getting the new 3 which was just announced or saving some money and getting the older model. I'm looking to buy the 13 inch model of that helps, I'm just not well-versed as far as computer specs go. Would the internal upgrades in the Book 3 be better than the Book 2, or is it not worth the upgrade?

Docking Station suggestions for a 2015/2016 MacBook Air with two external HDMI monitors?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:43 PM PDT

So my MacBook Air has two basic USB ports and the old Thunderbolt port, not the newer standard Thunderbolt 3 / USB C port.

I currently have a 32" samsung HDMI monitor connected via a Thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor.

I'm purchasing another one of the same monitor, and I plan to extend my desktop to both displays, not mirror each other.

The monitors also have a DP / DisplayPort input.

Any suggestions on a compatible docking station or what I should look for? I'm not sure what to get since I have the older Thunderbolt port. I imagine there are adaptors I could use too, right?

    Thanks in advance!

How well do games run on an Acer Swift 1?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:41 PM PDT

So I bought it super cheap off of Amazon with the primary purpose of it being used for work (Microsoft office, sending emails, light research) as well as some light use for YouTube or Netflix.

I was wondering of the capabilities of it using things like OpenEmu, Dolphin, or Steam?

I also wanted to see if it was possible to run games like Minecraft or Fortnite on it. Not a huge loss if I can't, as I already have both games on my switch and the emulators aren't really the purpose of me buying this machine, but it would be really fun.

Comparing same specs, different laptops. 2019 ASUS ROG Strix G 15.6" vs Lenovo Legion Y540 15.6" (more info in description)

    Posted: 06 May 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Thanks for taking a look. I am looking to purchase a new laptop and might have narrowed it down to two but could use some opinions of those that know more.

First the little bio thing I see posted here.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Roughly $1200, but closer to $1000 would be nice.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Refurbished if direct from manufacture like lenovo's refurbished site.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Form factor not very important. I might be rougher that then average user on my laptops. On my last two laptops, lenovo yoga and HP Pavilion, I broke the hinges. So maybe something decently rugged, or maybe just not super fragile.

Battery life not a huge deal.

As for performance, I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop lot, so I believe I am looking for a good CPU and RAM. I dont know a whole lot about CPUs, but I would like 16gb-32gb RAM.

SSD of 256gb or more would be nice. I don't need more than that of local storage.

I would like something that can run a game like FIFA smoothly.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?I consider this as a bonus, but not that important. Maybe not a super thick laptop, as I occasionally travel with it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.15"-17"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.the Adobe suite minus video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Beginner, but would like to run Fifa and maybe some racing games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Backlit keyboard would be great. Touch screen would be a bonus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.Overall, something that can handle large adobe files well and can handle some gaming. Something that is not already out of date already and can last me 3ish years.

Here are the two I found that are at the top of my price range. They look to have nearly identical specs, just different brands. Any difference I should know about?

    https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-001A-01X59

https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000E-0J0K0 (probably leaning towards this lenovo out of the two just because I have bought a lenovo that lasted me 3+ year with no major issues.)

Also, with the above stated preference, are there any other options that might be better, or just as good as the ones I posted but cheaper?

    Thanks for the help!!!!!!

Looking for good college laptop ~$1000, alongside GPU enclosure for heavy workloads

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:10 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Roughly $1000, but flexible
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Hoping for an ultrabook with good build quality, a good CPU as I plan to use a GPU enclosure as well, and good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      I'd say it's preferred
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" or 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Unsure of my major, but I'm expecting heavier workloads, as well as some gaming. Potentially video editing and photo editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not expecting to do much more than AAA games, like Overwatch and CSGO, although I occasionally enjoy more intensive games like BeamNG, Rust, ARK,
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Don't care for touch screen, and using a gpu enclosure I'm planning on most of my IO being enclosure, although a fingerprint scanner/windows hello would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Mostly just hoping for something that'll last through senior year of high school and hopefully all of college. Most likely gonna put an nvidia 3000 series in the enclosure once it comes out if that helps, although I've got a 980 ti in my current computer that still chugs along great and might still be a good candidate for the enclosure. Any help is greatly appreciated!
