Incoming CS student looking for laptop on budget Posted: 05 May 2020 06:20 PM PDT I'm an incoming CS student with a $600 budget and I need to find the best laptop out there that's new and has the best performance for the price. I don't care about graphics as long as it's 1080p. Processors should be 8th gen i5 / ryzen 5 equivalent or better. And 8 gb of ram or better. SSD would be a plus but if there's on HDD that's fine. Just want the laptop to be able to perform when needed in my CS classes and be able to run software engineering software smoothly. Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: -Anything $600 and under (US Dollars)

Posted: 06 May 2020 05:51 AM PDT So I'm looking at buying the Honor magicbook 14, for about $465 there is Ryzen 5 3500u variant with 8gb ram and a 512gb ssd. For $500 there is a Ryzen 7 3700u with the same specs, do you think the upgrade will be worth it? Another query I have is about thermal throttling, they are both based on the same architecture and same no. of cores, but the r7 is clocked higher, so do you think thermal throttling will occur on the r7 as it is an ultrabook after all? Looking for a good gaming/general use laptop for $800 Posted: 06 May 2020 04:38 AM PDT * Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase: $800 USD , preferably less * Are you open to refurbs/used? dell XPS 9300 vs Surface Laptop 3 for a developer Posted: 06 May 2020 03:12 AM PDT Hi all. I am trying to decide between these two laptops with the primary task being Visual Studio, SQL Developer and some other productivity applications. I guess the main consideration is the screen resolution. It seems the Surface Laptop has the advantage here with XPS either being too much (4k) or too small (1080p). But I am unsure about the aspect ratio and how it relates to programming with the Surface coming in at 3:2 and Dell at 16:10? Also the trackpad is quite important to me having come from MacBook Pros. Otherwise these are the advantages/disadvantages as I understand them: Dell: Better Screen, Smaller form factor Surface: Nicer trackpad, less bloatware Any other advice? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Looking for a good budget laptop to take to Japan Posted: 06 May 2020 12:51 AM PDT I got accepted to teach with the JET Program in September (no word on if the pandemic will affect this yet) and I'm looking for a new laptop. Currently I have an Acer Chromebook that I bought new in 2016, and I'm a little tired of the limited use of it.
Thanks for reading my post! :) [link] [comments] |
Laptop for University and Light Gaming Posted: 05 May 2020 10:02 PM PDT My Lenovo Yoga 530 died within a year and a half of use so I have a full refund to buy a new laptop with. I kind of don't trust Lenovo because this laptop is the second one I've had battery and screen flickering issues within a year and a half of purchase. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Posted: 06 May 2020 06:42 AM PDT Hello, i need some suggestions for a new laptop. My 3 year old tower ( intel I5-6600k , GTX970 ,16Gb RAM) will remain my main gaming rig but i would like something small and portable for work and doing some research at home. I'll mostly use it for browsing, office applications and rarely a bit of illustrator and lightroom. -Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: About 1000€. Maximum 1500€. Will be buying in Belgium ( Germany (would prefer an AZERTY keyboard tough), France , Nederlands are also an option) -Are you open to refurbs/used? Rather not -How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Built quality is pretty important. I would be pretty annoyed to spend >1000€ for something that won't at least survive for 3-4 years. It also has to be rather lightweight and portable. -How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important -Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 -Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly just chrome with a ton of open tabs and word. Occasionally illustrator or inkscap for scientific articles and posters . I've been getting into photography over the last year so maybe rarely some lightroom. No or pretty light gaming (probably just some stardew valley from time to time). -If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA -Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No. -Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm torn between the lenovo x1 carbon, the xps 13 and the spectre x360. I found a student deal for the lenovo where I can get the base model of the 7th Gen for about 1200€ which seems to be a great offer. Should I take this or can I expect a better deal during back-to-school sales. [link] [comments] |
What do you guys think of this laptop and its cost? Posted: 06 May 2020 06:41 AM PDT https://www.cyberport.de/?DEEP=1CAH-09X&APID=276&gclid=CjwKCAjw1v_0BRAkEiwALFkj5lPYDtFa_iU4P-izjwGYgNI1WGr7LrdI106v0NYkv4vhJZUOZw-UnBoCC6YQAvD_BwE (Warning: German) My sister is looking for a laptop below 560€ on the German market, with which she can play older games like Garry's Mod or Life is Strange (2?) or maybe even some triple-A shooters from some years ago, preferably while being able to use YouTube for music at the same time and not worry about freezing everything completely when alt-tabbing. Suggestions are of course welcome, but a friend of hers sent her that link that I put above, and it seems great, but, with my meager knowledge, I don't know, to good to be true? I mean Ryzen 7 is supposed to be high end, no? But cpubenchmark.net puts it below an Intel i5. And I don't know how to judge the 4 digit number on either AMD or Intel other than bigger is usually better. And when it comes to graphic cards I am pretty lost, other than knowing that integrated ones are usually crap for anything a bit more demanding. But maybe what my sister wants isn't all that demanding. I guess the hardest part is knowing what could actually be "enough" for my sister, because she doesn't really have a concept of what games are new or heavy and doesn't seem to care much for ultra-HD settings. Looking for the best stylus/sketching laptop. Posted: 05 May 2020 11:08 PM PDT From a cursory search, it seems to be a surface pro x. Perhaps there is something better? I'm using it for drawing and studying math. No budget Any operating system Any size/weight/width/battery [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Video Editing/3D Modeling software? $1200ish. Posted: 06 May 2020 06:20 AM PDT Hello all. I'm looking for advice on selecting a good laptop for primarily video editing and 3D model software. Budget around $1200 USD. I use davinci resolve and software like Creo and 3D printing software. My current laptop is about four years old and has a hard time handling some of these high demand programs (slow/freezing). I do a lot of prototyping and designing of mechanical devices so I am heavily reliant on my laptop. If a desktop would be better I may consider that as well. Any advice or suggestion you can offer would be very appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 May 2020 05:29 AM PDT Acer Nitro (£649.99) - https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3114285 HP Pavilion (£649.99) - https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7631427 The HP Pavilion only has a 256GB SSD in terms of storage but I was wondering if it has enough advantages over the Acer Nitro to be worth getting anyway and buying an extra hard drive seperately. After having seen the new swift 3 review on anandtech - that now might be my #1 choice whenever it comes out. https://www.anandtech.com/show/15762/the-acer-swift-3-sf314-review-swift-gets-swifter-with-ryzen-4000 The whole mx150/250/350 + i7 xxU vs AMD 3700U solo is also something that I have considered. If overall battery life will be better on going AMD APU route- then that is what I'd likely choose. The Acer Aspire 5 with 3700u has always had me interested but 15.6 inches is out of the question - the newer swift 3 is essentially a better version than this but lighter/smaller. Right now I'm looking for other options to see what stacks up to what I've considered so far. Thanks! Any questions please let me know. [link] [comments] |

[USA][13 inches] Something small that can play Hearthstone without becoming a jet engine Posted: 05 May 2020 10:43 PM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ~$1000 Are you open to refurbs/used? I guess. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? This is going to be a "fun" computer. Light coding, web-browsing,YouTube, and Hearthstone are going to be what I'm using this for 99% of the time. I'm definitely looking for something on the small and light side. Preferably around the size of a 13-inch MBP. I was considering the 2020 MBA but it seems like it gets very hot. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches or smaller. I've found the 14 inch laptops are generally bigger than what I'm looking for. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just Hearthstone for now. Maybe indies in the future. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Stylus support would be cool, but definitely not my main concern. [link] [comments] |
Help me choose between upgraded ASUS TUF FX505DT and ASUS TUF A15 Posted: 06 May 2020 04:39 AM PDT So TUF A15 is coming to my country (Indonesia) this month, the one within my budget is the R5 4600 1650Ti version priced at around 925 USD. Meanwhile FX505DT is 725 USD, of course with the new A15 coming the price will be going down and I can even hunt for used one (it's an option), with the same budget as A15 I may get an extra 1TB HDD or 8GB of RAM, maybe even both. Since A15 been around for a while in other parts of the world, I want to seek some advice. Is A15 worth the extra money? How are Ryzen 4000 and 1650Ti compared to Ryzen 3000 and 1650? There's also the extra 24Hz of the monitor's refresh rate, and I don't know what else to take to consideration. Thanks in advance. 😁 [link] [comments] |
