This is probably not a good question. Just wondering how to catgorize the GPU and if this laptop is a good buy (GPD Win Max)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 10:16 PM PDT

The GPD Win Max is an 8 inch UMPC sporting a Intel Core i7-1065G7, 8GB LPDDR4X-3733, and Intel Iris Plus 940. It costs $779 at launch.

I know people will say get a real gaming laptop for $100 less with a GTX 1650 will probably be better but most are 14 inch and or 15 inch so they're not even comparable. There's also people who will say what games do you play just get what you need, esports can be played on a mx150 even. What I'm asking is a bit different.

My question is, how good have Intel and AMD iGPUs gotten in the 15-25w range? I'm not buying the marketing blurb at face value. They say the 4700u and 1065G7 respectively offer performance comparable to the MX150. Even if that is true how does that compare to a full on 1650 mobile? If it is comparable to a MX150, would the price be worth it, ceterus parabis?

Another question, are iGPUs catching up? I'm looking forward not what I play now. If in 2 years iGPUs will be on the same level as a 1650 then I might not even need to get a dgpu. I see all of the headlines about AMD and tiger lake having 3 times the performance of their respective current products should I buy into the marketing blurb and just wait? Would not want buyers regret buying something with say a 1650 super mobile then realize it's useless cause I can play any of my games on the igpu alone.

Looking for a gaming + programing laptop

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:13 AM PDT

I need to find a laptop for the absolute cheapest it would be possible to get such a laptop for that allows me to run games like Overwatch, DotA2, Elder Scrolls Online, but also allows me to run programs such as Unity or Godot to code 3D games. Not looking for the greatest of graphics but looking for something playable. Basically something with enough graphical power (and I guess ram) to run most steam games but for the cheapest available price. Thanks in advance

Looking for a good, basic laptop for PC gaming

    Posted: 02 May 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I'm a total newcomer to PC gaming, but I'm trying to find a new hobby to ride out the quarantine, and FIFA and 2k with mods is what I'm going with.

I'm looking to spend under $1k on a laptop, run it through my TV and connect my PS4 controller. Anything I should know in terms of accessories or maintenance that I wouldn't know about as a console gamer/Mac user?

Looking for a new general purpose laptop (15", US, $1600)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1200-$1600

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

No - have had the same computer for 7 years, would prefer something new (and just not wanting to take the risk of a voided warranty)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is most important - everything else is secondary.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Would prefer 5 lbs or under. Thinness not a big deal.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" feels about right, not opposed to a bit smaller or a bit bigger.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Heavy use of Photoshop for work, some Premiere, lots and lots of Chrome tabs. Would like to do some light gaming - stuff like Overwatch, nothing super high end.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly not-intensive indie stuff or games like Valorum/Overwatch (and not really on the highest settings or anything)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality would be nice. Do not care about or need touch screen / finger print reader / optical drive / etc.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Have had the same computer (Lenovo Ideapad) for a long time. Looking for something with decent memory (at least 16gb RAM) and an SSD hard drive (512gb minimum probably?) to ensure it's speedy and has solid performance when lots of different things are running at once. Laptop will be used for work & gaming, so hopefully lasts a long time.

Budget €400 (used) to €700 (new) - EU. Display quality is important.

      Yes (for under €400)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Display quality is most important, followed by build quality - I like the robustness of the original Thinkpads
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14" or above (resolution, clarity and viewing angle is important)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. This is for casual internet use, some doc editing, some light DAW usage
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
i5 or above. At least 8Gb ram. HDD size isn't important as I use dropbox.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Again, the quality of the display is important to me as I find cheap TN displays difficult to work with and my eyes get strained easily. I love retina type displays.

Don't mind thinness, but weight matters cuz I'll be traveling a lot.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Below 17", so ~15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality, good cooling & performance, I want a good keyboard that feels nice to tap too, do NOT need RGB.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Just tired of being afraid of my computer getting super hot. A bit worried about bleed through of RGB so if I can turn that off, that's cool.

    Reliable laptop for PhD Student

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:55 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Some context to my query: I am a full time PhD Student (computer science), researching and developing high performance algorithms for scientific imaging systems. At present I use my nasty old laptop to write and deploy C/C++/CUDA code to a remote server, as well as researching, reading, and writing papers (LaTeX).

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Around $3-3.5k NZD, situated in New Zealand.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? I am not keen on refurbs or used as I want to get the most life out of a machine as possible. Albiet I understand some personal maintainance is needed (ie: battery replacement over time).

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Not interested in 2 in 1 models at all, highly interested in a solid ultrabook. Battery and performance are critical for long days in the lab or library, build quality is less critical but I don't want anything too flimsy.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A lighter model would be nice for carrying about, but not too critical. Same applies for thinness. Probably nothing ludicrously thin as I understand thinner laptops can sacrifice heat management.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably looking for around 14 inches. 13 inches may be too small, whereas 15 inches seems too large. I'm open to anyone's thoughts regarding screen size and programming.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None of the above are applicable to me. I will just be mostly programming via VSCode, utilising terminals, reading and writing papers (compiling LaTeX), slack and zoom calls, and general Web browsing/Netflix/YouTube.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not applicable.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Looking for a solid build machine, hopefully to last me some years. Keyboard is crucial for programming and writing. Track pad isn't a big deal if I utilise a mouse on the side. Not interested in touch screen at all. Modern ports would be nice, ie: USB C, but not critical. A decent screen is important, nice and bright and clear. Doesn't need to be 4k or anything, as I mostly use Linux and as far as I know, larger screens can have scalability issues for some programs (open to feedback regarding this).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I primarily use a Linux distro for my work (Ubuntu), I really don't like using Windows so ideally the machine shouldnt be too difficult to get working with Linux if possible (I understand some laptops have issues getting various components working. I would prefer Linux over Mac OS, but am open to suggestion.

I have looked into Dell Xps 13 and 15 models but am put off by the numerous complaints of battery expansion, screen flickering, coil whine, hot to the touch etc. I am too nervous to "try" the laptop and return if need be as I live in NZ and the Dell laptop would likely be shipped from the USA. They are quite costly and don't want to end up with a shoddy product.

I have also looked into Lenovos range of Thinkpads and the like. They seem okay, maybe a little lack luster but I've never used one before so I have no experience to speak of. The only model which peaked my interest is the X1 Carbon gen 7, but all suppliers in New Zealand are all out of stock (doh!). I also recall some users have turned their backs due to the spyware issue, so Idk.

I have also looked into the 2020 macbook air, but am put off by the passive cooling of the CPU, and higher running temps. Maybe someone can comment on if this issue is blown out of proportion and if the machine might be suitable for my use case. I am considering waiting for the next 13/14 inch Pro to be revealed (hopefully soon), but I do prefer Linux.

Lastly, I have looked into other various brands and models (ie: zenbooks for example), but just keep running into negative feedback regarding hardware failing (Zenbook hinge for example). I understand no laptop is perfect but I just can't find one that peaks my interest above the rest.

Thank you for your help, cheers.

Internal SSD Alienware M14x (2012 version)

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:50 PM PDT

My Alienware laptop has done well for 8 yrs now. However it has significantly slowed down over the years. Especially noticeable in the past 6 months.

I've narrowed it down to the HDD.

    I am looking for validation/verification:

    • Instead of a regular HDD just opt for an SSD

    • Go with a 1 TB SSD - Currently have a 500GB

    • Go with SATA 3

    • I noticed a Crucial MX500 1TB on sale for $110 - is this a good option for an internal drive? I saw some good reviews on the drive itself but wasn't entirely sure if it is a good matc

    Thanks for the help.

I have been doing a little research and had determined that I want at least an i7 processor, 500+ GB hard drive , 16GB of RAM, and anywhere from 13-15 inches. I have been looking at the Dell XPS 13/15 7590 mainly along with the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 with the specification that I listed above. In reality I have no idea what I am doing and the only computer that I have owned up to this point is a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, so any help would be greatly appreciated for either support for the Dell or Surface or any other laptops. Acer Nitro 5 vs Lenovo Leigon Y540

    Posted: 02 May 2020 08:12 PM PDT

Acer Nitro 5 - on sale for $999 CAD Best Buy (available immediately for pickup) Lenovo Leigon Y540 - $1300 CAD from Costco (order online, couple weeks potential wait)

    Between the two they both have a i5 9300h and a 512ssd

    The major differences:

The acer has a bigger 17.3 inch ips display, 8GB ram (expandable) and a gtx1650

The Lenovo only has a 15.6 inch screen but at 144hz, with 16gb ram and a gtx1660ti.

I can add ram to the acer but am I going to kick myself down the road for not spending the extra $300 on the Lenovo for the better graphics card? Will I regret getting the smaller display? Does a 144hz display make that much of a difference on a laptop screen? Major cooling differences?

The laptop will spend most of its time plugged in. Games played right now are mostly COD, battlefield, apex and league of legends.

Any options in this price range I should be considering? Keep in mind, Canadian pricing.

    Thanks

Light gaming and light video/photo-editing. Dota 2, Premiere pro and Photoshop

Dota 2, Settings to fastest 60 FPS

      Dual-channel memory
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was thinking about MSI Modern 14 as my choice, but the single channel memory and it also pretty hard to upgrade was the deal breaker.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Performance and quality are my biggest concerns

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Obviously I don't want something super heavy but I wont be traveling too much with it so it's not the biggest concern

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14.5in+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be running adobe creative cloud products, possibly light to medium video editing and light to medium music production

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ample amount of storage, possibly upgradable ram?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

•Looking to spend about 1,000-1300 USD. •Also wanting 16gb ram, and maybe the possibility of upgrading the ram in the future. •Won't be traveling much so weight isn't a huge deal •IPS display? I was looking at the MSI GS65 stealth as well as the GS75, the Asus Vivobook pro 17, as well as some Dell laptops but I've heard a lot of not so good about those. Also looked at an x1 carbon. Really open to suggestions. Sorry about my lack of knowledge

Your thoughts on the HP Pavillion 15

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:42 AM PDT

So I'm thinking about buying this: https://www.newegg.com/global/qa-en/black-hp-pavilion-15/p/1TS-000D-082Z3
I'm planning on using it for college and light gaming and my budget is around 3000 QAR (~800$). I just wanted to know if it's a good choice or if you guys could suggest a better one around the same price. Thanks!

Looking for a laptop for design work

    Posted: 02 May 2020 09:41 PM PDT

I hope everyone's doing well! With work at home arrangement, I was able to bring the company laptop home for my non-design related work. But it has all these design software (illustrator, indesign, photoshop) and during quarantine I've enjoyed learning them and would want to learn more that I plan to buy my own since I'd have to return this at some point.

What's the cheapest model I could look into that meets the requirements for design work? (I put cheapest since I'm not making much and might be out of work soon)

HP Envy 17t VS HP Pavilion 15z

    Posted: 02 May 2020 07:21 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I live in the US and my budget is $1,000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I want a laptop that has 16gbs of RAM and a i7 processor. Preferably I would be able to play games on it, but the main purpose of it is for college.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      13" and up.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll need to run some programs for my engineering classes, and I would like to do some casual gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would like to play mostly indie games such as The Binding of Isaac and Don't Starve, but would also like to have the ability to play some bigger games like Skyrim.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No preference here, I just need a laptop for my classes this fall.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've mostly narrowed my section down to either the HP Envy 17t or the HP Pavilion 15z. The Envy 17t seems to be the better option overall, but it's lack of AMD graphics card sounds like it could be an issue, plus it goes a bit over my budget. Would it still be worth it to go for the Envy over the Pavilion?

I am open to the idea of getting a different laptop, but these are the ones I've been thinking about getting.

Also this is my first time buying a laptop, so I would appreciate it if you could go slow with me, I might not understand some things that you try to explain at first.

Thank you very much for your time and advice, I really appreciate it.
