Acer Nitro 5 AMD 4000 vs Blade Stealth Advanced 2018

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:26 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    600-700USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

If it's thin and light, that's good, but I prioritize performance and battery life more than that. Build quality is important as well.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

If it's thin and light enough to put in my back, that's fine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming, 3D Modeling/Animation

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Subnautica, cities skylines at high and smooth fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good screen. Good keyboard would be appreciated, but not the end of the world if I don't get one.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So, I was able to find a Razer Blade 2018 Advanced for around the same price as a Nitro 5. It's got an i7-8750h, 16gb of ram, a 1070 Max-Q, and a good screen with a nice, thin and light design. I've heard that the Ryzen 5 4600 is better, but for the same price I know that the Nitro 5 will have a worse GPU (1650 ti tops for the AMD model). For my needs, which one should I get?

[UK] £300 student laptop that can do some light gaming

    Posted: 07 May 2020 04:27 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £300 GBP

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Standard laptop, sturdy build quality if possible but willing to sacrifice over performance, performance is priority, decent battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want anything extremely heavy, but I'd prefer something bulky and sturdy over thin and fragile.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'd prefer a screen that is around average. I'm not very familiar with how big specific screen sizer are, but hopefully that gives you an idea of what I'm looking for.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming and light gaming. Any video editing I'll do will also be quite light

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to run terraria, Minecraft etc without stuttering, maybe stuff like shogun 2 as well but I realise that may be asking for too much at this budget. The last laptop I played terraria on ran fine most of the time, but ground to a halt every time I tried to fight a performance "intensive" boss like the destroyer. I don't mind turning down the settings but I'd prefer >30 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Only requirements would be an IPS screen and an HDMI port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

LOL, Valorant. The more frames the better.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Laptop advice for an European Student

    Hi guys,

I am going to university to learn how to program very soon. Because of tha, I will be needing a new laptop as my current one wont do the trick.

I've been thinking about getting a hybrid so I can take notes faster. My price range is 1200€ max. But at that price range I can't find any hybrids with good cpu's.

Is it even worth it getting a hybrid? What do you guys recommend?

Laptop for some programs & Sims 4

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:10 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Approx. $1.5k USD. Flexible.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No, only new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No 2-in-1's, looking for performance & something that will last. Battery isn't super important as it will be used near outlets.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not super important, however I would prefer something less clunky as I am used to a MacBook Air. Willing to overlook.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Approx 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photoshop, husband uses architectural CAD programs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sims 4 with highest settings, all expansions/game packs, lots of CC.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Backlit keyboard is a must. I'd like something that has an efficient cooling system, as I tend to plop it on my lap.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My area of study includes a lot of specimen images, so something that displays color really well would be a big plus. I'm not tech savvy by any means, and the amount of options out there are overwhelming when I don't really know what I need/want.

    Thanks for any suggestions. :)

Will ThinkPad X1 Extreme be good enough to work in Unreal Engine?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:47 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop that I could use to work in Unreal. I know a workstation would be better, but for many reasons my choices are limited to a laptop. So far Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen2 is the best one I could find. I'm also considering system76 Adder, it seems to have better GPU but reviews about system76 are mixed.

Do you think I'll be able to comfortably work in UE4 on X1 Extreme? I don't need the most maxed out ultra high quality graphics, just a decent comfortable working environment.

Or maybe you could suggest some better options?

A sturdy and portable student laptop with decent specs

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:40 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
The budget is between 400 and 1000 euros, but the cheaper the better since I am a bit short on money.
    • Country of purchase would probably be either Germany, Austria or the Netherlands since I have family there and tech in general is cheaper than in my country.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I would prefer something new since I wish to avoid getting a faulty laptop since I don't really have money for constant repairs or replacements.
    • A good used laptop or a model that is known for their build quality wouldn't be a problem if it means getting a higher quality laptop for less money.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I plan on using the laptop for college and programming, so build quality, performance and batery life are all important, as well as form factor since I will be carrying it around a lot.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I will carry it to lectures and the library, so I would prefer something lighter but with good build quality.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I plan on getting a new monitor which I will connect to the laptop when home. During classes and in the library size shouldn't matter so much and at least 13 inches would be ok.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I rarely play games but if I do, I will probably play some less demanding titles like terraria or stardew valley. I would also like to be able to do photo editing on it and maybe some light video editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
All the games I want to play don't need too much power or fps.
    • I would also like it to have a decent gpu, doesn't matter is integrated or not, I just want it to be decent and not bottleneck the rest of the system when I am playing games or using photoshop.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Since I will use it for coding, a good keyboard is a must. I also want a laptop with reliable build quality that won't break after a few months of usage. Touch-screen would be a nice feature but I don't need it if it will bump up the price significantly. 4k display also isn't necessary since it will probably just drain the batery faster and increase the price.
    • Same goes for ports and fingerprint scanner, the more the better, but I can live without them.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The laptop doesn't need to have great speakers since I will use headphones or a bluetooth speaker most of the time anyway.
    • Batery life is very important.
    • 16+gb of ram would be preferable but 8gb and an upgrade option would also work for me.
    • A good CPU is also needed, I don't really care about intel vs AMD, but I heard that AMD made a few really good laptop CPUs.
    • While I could stretch my budget to 1000 euros, I am most comfortable up to around 700-800.

    Thank you

General laptop use with OK discrete graphics under 2000€ (Italy)

    Posted: 07 May 2020 05:35 AM PDT

    Hi there!

Have been lurking for some time and I find it really nice to have some enthusiasts that help out less savvy users (hopefully me).

I have a somewhat fully functioning 2015 XPS 13 9343 (256Gb - 8Gb Ram) with its headphone jack that has lately stopped working. I am looking to get a new laptop as my everyday machine, while finding some other use for this one. Also it seems I can't upgrade my laptop ram...I would like to have at least 16/32gb.

My interest is to have a portable machine (not too heavy but could go up to 2kg ) to use for work (mainly heavy excel and office stuff) general recreation (browsing, youtube) and some gaming (not looking for 120fps on doom eternal ultra settings, but 50/60fps with high settings on new/newish games).

I understand that 13 inches is pretty much out of the question for these requests, so I will mainly focus on 14-15 inches.

    here is the form:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1500 max 2000€ - Italy
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes but only if with warranty (refurbs I guess)
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not a fan of 2-in-1, good build quality is important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
want to carry it around a lot, so no heavyweights jaggernauts.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      got used to 13 inches...maybe 14 max 15?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'd say some intense office multitasking, large excel sheets, some light/medium gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
no requirements, but I'd love to play some recent games (1-2 years old) in at least medium/high detail
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
comfortable keyboard would be great and I'd love (but would not require) standard inversed T shaped arrow keys vs "+" shaped arrow keys
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm asking mainly because I have loved my xps13 and I would stick to the same model from 2020 but I'm wodering wether the new xps 13 models are still worth it and if they will allow some light gaming (on the old one is quite difficult) and if they would give me a real bump in performance all over.

    Thanks!

Macs: What's the oldest I should get for Performance & Value for Max $1000 USD?

    Posted: 06 May 2020 08:45 AM PDT

I'm asking for a friend in the entertainment industry. I don't buy Macs and am less familiar with how well they age. She needs a Mac with moderate to higher performance but it doesn't have to be top of the line. Macs are like the Toyotas of laptops--they hold their value, so I'm not sure what to recommend.

If you had a budget of about $800-1000, what's the oldest Mac we can reasonably expect to find? No requirements other than 15" screen and a good ratio of performance to value.

Update: Thanks for the feedback--very helpful. To clarify--this has to be a Mac, no hackintoshes, a 15" screen is a must, and it will be used for moderate video/audio editing. We'll consider paying more (1200ish?) if the performance/value tradeoff is worth it. It sounds like the 2015 Macbook Pro might be the sweet spot. MacBook Air is out because it's no larger than a 13".

Dell XPS 13 2in1 vs iPad pro 12.9 + Magic keyboard.

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:57 PM PDT

So I basically have till the end of the day to make a new choice on a laptop. It will be my only computer and mainly used for video editing, photo editing, drawing, word docs, emails and then light gaming and content consumption in that order of importance. I do have a preference for apple tbh.

Also slightly considering MacBook Pro plus cheaper iPad? But would throw me way over my budget of around $2500Aud.

    ~$1500 USD - Merica - versatile laptop

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:02 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800-1,500 (USD)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Nope.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Traditional laptop is fine but I'm open to 2-in-1 and ultrabooks. I just need it to function and do the tasks I need it to do. Performance. Battery life. Build.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Its certainly important but I have a backpack that can carry whatever I put into it.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" is fine by me. I had a 17" screen on a Sony Vaio and that was awesome but it went out eventually.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do some graphic design (digital and print work), web design and development, as well as audio restoration and digitization, and going into a PhD program that will use a lot of different linguistics software, and as a TA, I will need to make video edits, record video and audio for the students too. Hopefully that gives an idea of what I want the machine to do. I will be running a lot of Adobe programs, I use Sublime Text 3 as my main text editor and run Local by Flywheel and a few other programs to run localized sites. I hardly game.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    I hardly game.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

120hz or higher display would be rad! A back-lit keyboard is a must. Quality build. Definitely good input devices (HDMI, USB 3.0, and MicroSD slot).

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I previously had an Acer that lasted 3 years and it finally went out. I want to avoid Acer at all cost because its been a very frustrating machine. Some longevity to the machine would be great. I was tempted to piece a PC together and ask the folks at /r/buildapcforme but I realized I'm constantly drive from place to place and the semester starts, I will need a reliable machine to take along with me.

I need something that can handle any modern game and upcoming game at exceptional levels. I also need something that won't die on me a year or sooner (I've had this happen with 3 previous top of the line msi) battery life is always a plus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I need it for daily use, so something sleek and on the thin side is better.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Currently have a 17''. Want to try 15 or 14.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I game a lot, but I mostly play destiny 2. I am excited to try cyberpunk, doom eternal, and more upcoming and new releases.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As stated, the only graphically intense game I really play is destiny 2 when bungie makes it decent. (Not often) i need something that will be able to run 2077 at ultra/max, and the same for doom eternal.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a must, I write a lot and need something tactile and accurate. Something with a stylus would be great too if that even exists. I don't care about a Webcam, but need a good inline mic.

I currently have an ASUS ROG With a 1050ti. Its honestly the best laptop I've owned, but is too big, too edgy, and the card is showing its age. It also only has 4gb vram.

Gaming laptop that looks fairly normal?

    Posted: 07 May 2020 12:08 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1000 GBP
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Mainly looking for something with some gaming performance but looks like an ultrabook (don't know if that's possible at my price range)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I don't need something really thin and light but it'd be carried around university so I don't want a huge heavy gaming laptop.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Not really, probably 13-15", maybe could go for 17" but that's getting a bit too big.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mainly software engineering so visual studio, maybe stuff like spotify and a few tabs open in the background, however I also play some games.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Probably the most GPU demanding title I'd be looking to play is Forza horizon 4, with the most CPU demanding game being beamng drive. I'm more of a casual gamer though so 60FPS is fine, even on low-med settings. I do play other stuff but as long as those two play, any of my other games will run fine.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      N/A

Already found a few decent laptops - the XPS 15 seems perfect, however its out of my price range, there's a few from lenovo such as the S540 and S740 but don't seem to be out in the UK yet, and finally the lenovo L340, which could be the one I go with if there aren't any other options. I can get an i7-9750H, 16GB of 2400MHz RAM, a 1TB M.2 SSD, and a GeForce GTX1650 for £999 - £899 with student discount - which is perfect, the only drawback being battery life.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, quality, last 2 are interchangeable but not unimportant.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not too important, but not super bulky.

      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I plan on playing lots of different games. I would also like to stream off this laptop using streamlabs obs. Possibly Video/Photo Editing but unsure of which program I will use. Music producing with Fruity Loops.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I plan on playing a wide variety of games at the highest fps possible with my budget.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Not way to picky here.

~$1000 Non-Gaming, Lightweight, Best Bang for Buck Laptop (United States)

    Posted: 06 May 2020 11:45 PM PDT

Looking to get a new laptop in the next few months and wanted to get inputs from the experts here in this subreddit. I'm going back to business school and have been doing my own research, but there are so many options and I've been out of touch with the market for too many years. Appreciate any insights and thanks in advance!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
~$1000, but obviously spending less is better if I can get what I need out of it.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes, but would prefer new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Going to be used for business school, so lightweight and portable is the most important factor, followed/tied with battery life, then sleek design and build quality. Performance is important to an extent, but I won't be gaming or running code on it. Would prefer at least a 10th-gen i5.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      #1
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Strong preference for 13"; maybe 14" if it's light/sleek enough. Definitely don't want a 15" or higher.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Occasionally would run Lightroom for photo editing, so I suppose display quality is a factor, but I'll also have external monitors for that so not essential.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Need a USB-C port (or good alternative) for compatibility with docking stations as I will be docking it to dual screens, keyboard, and mouse when I'm at my desk. Touchscreen is a plus for taking notes.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion:
As you can probably tell, I'm a pretty simple user, but just looking to get the best bang for my buck. Most of the time I'll be using it to do work (researching info on the web, Excel, group presentations/projects).
