Bricked Xiaomi Mi9 S - How to fix on Linux

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:18 AM PDT

    Hello Guys.

At the beginning of 2020 I acquired a Xiaomi Mi9 SE through AliExpress. The device came in perfect state and it kept like that until I found out that the ROM of the device was not an official one (something I was suspecting because the device had its bootloader unlocked). Knowing this I decided to flash an official ROM downloaded directly from Xiaomi's web site. First I tried doing it in recovery mode through the update menu on MIUI 11 settings, but the device (I am guessing the custom ROM) did not allow me to do it due to some carrier related error. After this I tried using a VPN which, of course, did not fix the issue.

I did a bit more research and decided to flash the ROM through fastboot mode. I downloaded the needed ROM and Xiaomi's Mi Flash Tool to a Xiaomi Mi 13 laptop (with Windows 10) and made all the needed steps. All went with no issues and the device rebooted, but when that happened my phone was stuck in, what I have identified as a, soft brick. So now I have the device in a bootloop on recovery mode and can only access to fastboot mode. The device has had its bootloader locked because I forgot to select an alternative option to "flash + lock" in Mi Flash Tool (my fault).

Since then I have been quite busy and have not been able to focus on the problem as I wished. I have done some research but most of the info I found is directed towards Windows users, which is now a problem because I no longer have easy access to the Windows laptop previously mentioned (my current working machine is an Arch Linux laptop). Also most solutions I found require using the test points method to force EDL mode on the phone which I found quite difficult to do. Taking into account that I have no tools to perform the task and the current lock-down situation makes it quite difficult to obtain the aforementioned tools, this solution does not seem suited for the context.

I have attached a video with the current state of the phone.

    Soft brick - Mi9 SE

Being in my current situation I have made research on how to perform ROM flashing in Linux and seems pretty easy (easier than the Windows solution). But whenever I try flashing the ROM using the shell script (sh flash_all.sh) my terminal just stays in blank prompt:

    ❯ sh flash_all.sh

When I run sudo fastboot devices my phone is detected:

❯ sudo fastboot devices [sudo] password for angel: 485fd7a8 fastboot

I really have no clue of how to fix this problem. I would really appreciate some help from you guys. This is being quite frustrating because the phone is just a few months old and it was working flawlessly.

PD: Sorry for my English it is not my mother tongue.

    UPDATE:

So I have been working in the issue again and I have made an improvement (sort of). When I run sudo sh flash_all.sh I am getting this:

~/Downloads/grus_global_images_V11.0.2.0.QFBMIXM_20200310.0000.00_10.0_global ❯ sudo sh flash_all.sh Missmatching image and device

    UPDATE:

I have tried to run the script again and it is showing the blank prompt once again.

    UPDATE:

So I am finally able to run the script by, firstly, wiping all data from the recovery mode menu, then booting into fastboot mode. After that I run the script with the device not yet connected to my PC and after starting the script I connect the device. This is when, if I have commented one particular line regarding the Missmatching image and device error from the script code, the device does something: goes to a black screen with an unreadable (it is cut by the screen edge) error message on the top right corner of the screen. If I click power button after this error message the device reboots to recovery mode. On the contrary if I left the code untouched is when my terminal returns the error message Missmatching image and device and the phone just does not do anything.

MI A2 Lite Android 10 mic issues

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:31 PM PDT

Here I am reporting my experience with this half-assed update for the third time, now I have experienced ALL of the bugs I've read people complaining about.

Apps don't stay open in the background when you switch from one to another, performance decreases overtime and the animations at some point get laggy as heck, the phone seems to think it is a Pixel (which makes me believe this update it's just a lazy port from the pixel 3a or something). We've already talked about all of that before, but now I must confirmed that for some wired reason the mic just stops working all of a sudden, and sometimes when it does work, the volume it's WAY too low.

I'm terribly disappointed if I'm being completely honest, at first it seemed OK but now it's just annoying having to deal with a phone that doesn't work as it used to, when it used to work perfectly. But well, the new iPhone SE came out and I know for sure that iOS users don't have to deal with such BS.

Xiaomi Haylou GT1 Plus - Driver Cover Function

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:43 AM PDT

It's been 5 months since I got my GT1 Plus, and during the duration of using it. I kinda noticed that the buds get quieter over time. I thought it was because of gunk build-up but I've been cleaning it with tissues everytime I notice a build-up and the volume doesnt seem to change.

Until recently I accidentaly popped off what appears to be a cover for the earbuds internals(?). The cover is just like a thin black cloth. And after using it again, the volume somehow returns to normal. Does this cover have any sort of function? Is it the protection layer that prevents moisture from coming into the internals?

Anyone here still using a Redmi Note 5 Pro (whyred)? What ROM would you suggest?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:40 AM PDT

I've been using LOS, but I've been thinking maybe to change things up a bit with a new ROM. TBH the phone is still very decent, and rather than upgrading the device I thought maybe I'd just slap some new makeup on it and make it feel new!

What ROM would you guys suggest?

Redmi Note 9 series launching globally this week

Extreme battery wear in just 3 charge cycles (REDMI NOTE 8 PRO) only 5 months old.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:47 PM PDT

Today I wondered why my Redmi Note 8 Pro's battery seems to run down so quickly. Upon doing a search online, I found a Mi Community post about seeking out the battery health information. (SEE HERE: https://in.c.mi.com/thread-2138697-1-0.html) Upon using this method I found these following values:

    MF_05: 2946000

    MF_06: 4500000

Doing the math equation provided in the forum post linked above [MF_05 ÷ MF_06 × 100] (2946000 ÷ 4500000 × 100 = 65.46666666666667) meaning the battery can only charge up to 65.4% of it's factory capacity... According to the value MF_02, the value in which shows how battery charge cycles have been made, the value is only 3 cycles. How can the battery deplete it's capacity in only 3 battery charge cycles? Here is a screenshot below to show the Battery Info screen... What should I do, and can this be fixed?

Xiaomi Mi 9T lagging while scrolling

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:17 PM PDT

I got my Mi 9T recently and upgraded to Android 10, MIUI 11.0.5 right after, however I've noticed that the scrolling animation is laggy. It's more apparent in certain apps like Instagram, Reddit, and even just scrolling the app tray.

Is anyone else also getting this scrolling lag? I tried factory resetting the phone, but the issue came back pretty quickly. Does anyone have any fixes or is it just this version of the software that's causing these issues?

Redmi Note 8 Pro notification issue

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:42 PM PDT

I've been troubleshooting and trying to fix this issue the whole day now to no avail, maybe someone could shed me some light.

I just got a Redmi Note 8 Pro a couple days ago, but my notifications are not showing up when the phone is idle. I've been testing with Google Assistant reminders and they only go out with a 15min or so delay, or when I pick up and unlock my phone and they show up immediately.

I have tried many things, checked individual app permissions, general notification settings, battery saving settings, lock screen settings.. None worked out so far.

Is this a known issue or is it a widespread thing? I never had this happening with previous phones, and I read in a different thread this is connected to battery savings that Xiaomi enforces on the phone, but on my settings the savings are turned off completely.

    Thanks in advance!

    Xiaomi Mijia 1C robot vacuum

hey everyone, I'm looking to purchase a xiaomi mijia 1c robot vacuum and online and youtube it seems to have gotten great reviews. However, I have found some threads on here talking about a software issue and devices not working. Is this a widespread issue, or has it only been affecting a small group of people? Should I reconsider attempting to buy this robot vacuum? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mi9T - cannot get NFC working for GooglePay

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 02:00 PM PDT

I've tried setting the secure element in settings to all three choices, "embedded", "HCE" and "SIM" (why does the consumer have to choose this? How the hell do I know).

I've tried everything I can find searching Reddit on the topic.

Adding my credit card to Google pay works without issue and it confirmed I'm set to use it in shops as POS terminals.

When I go to pay in shops there is simply no reaction from my phone at all when I hold it to the credit card touch beacon. Embarrassing as hell each time I "try" this.

Is there something else to try? Or do I have a faulty NFC chip? Can I test it myself somehow without awkward moments in the shop? 😅

    Redmi 5 Plus - upgrade

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I've been using the Redmi 5 Plus for a couple of years now and I've been running MIUI eu for a half year now, I was wondering if there are any Xiaomi devices between €150-250 which are worth the upgrade.

The Redmi note 8 caught my attention at first but the branding on the chin is a big no for me, same goes for the 8T. The 8 Pro its specs is looking quite good but the cyborg camera setup and the chip is also a no go.

An other option would be the 9 lite, it's the perfect candidate but starting from €291 which is sadly out of my budget range...

Finally, the last option would be the Mi A3 running the stock android with a 720p screen, I haven't seen it in real life yet but I like the smaller form factor, the only problem is that the price skyrocketed from €161 to €265 which is not worth it.

Do you have any suggestions? I think that I'd be better of waiting for Xiaomi to release a new device.

    Redmi Note 5/Pro unlock

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:55 PM PDT

Any help would be appreciated. The XDA page hasn't been updated in a while. I've followed the steps to the letter and the miflash unlock tool can't verify the phone after multiple tries. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be nice.

Edit: They don't apparently require you to apply for the code and I don't see the "unlock wait time on the miflash unlock tool.
