Am I living in a parallel universe?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:14 AM PDT

SO thats a question im asking myself the last few days while reading about the new IPhone SE everywhere.

All reviews im reading or watching ( LTT , Dave Lee , etc.) are talking about the great value of this new device. But i can not wrap my head around it.

Im one a Samsung Galaxy A51 and fail to see how this new IPhone is even close to being a "value for your money" phone. BUT before everyone is going ahead writing how this phone has the best mobile processor on the market - hear me out first ..

All im doing is writing Whatsapp Messages ( yea im in Europe, Germany - there is absolutely no point in iMessage over here ), browsing reddit, watching Youtube Videos ( which is amazing on such a nice big AMOLED Screen ) and taking photos ( which is super nice with the variety of cameras on the back and totally enough for my personal use - i dont need super professional photos for pesonal use on my phone and its got 128 GB of storage for everything ) While all these tasks can be done for a very long time due to 4.000 mAh battery

Now the big thing is that all these things run smoothly - absolutely no problems whatsoever. Do most people really do more with their phones? Im talking about more demanding tasks.

From my point of view everybody fails to talk about real Budget phones ( Do they even exist in their world ) Its always about "Big new flagship here - big new flagship there - flagship killer over there - OH THERE IS AN IPHONE FOR 479€ THATS HUGE BANG FOR BUCK ) ... while im on my device thats 289€ of the shelf and looking better for everything i do.

Where am i going wrong? Do i fail to see why the processor is such a big deal on a phone thats doing nothing for professional use? Do Tech reviewers dont know about things like the Galaxy A-Series? Or any budget Series for that matter ( I dont care at all about brands )

Im absolutely not bashing on Apple or Android or anything else - i really want to understand what im not seeing. Maybe someone can help me out here.

Or maybe im not the guy to know about brand-value .. maybe im just living in my own parallel Universe lol

Edit: Guys. I didn't mean to be rude - my intention was simply to understand the other point of view. There is no need for another 80 comments to point out that software support is important and how my phone will not run for 5 years but the iPhone does ( even though my SO got a Galaxy A5 (2017) which runs perfectly fine ). I do understand that (very) important argument. But nonetheless - I do still think they could have made the SE more 2020 than 2016 - still give it a good price tag and still give it software support. That said, please be nice to each other, I just wanted to be educated ! :) Peace to the apple folks out there

Edit #2: I've read A LOT of your comments and came to a conclusion. As someone in the comments pointed out - yes I'm living in a parallel universe. It's called Europe and is apparently ( including the res of the world ) totally different from the US I'm terms of Smartphones lol - ultimately it's like metric vs. imperial system ^

Oneplus 8 - USB Tethering benchmarks (latency and bandwidth)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:31 AM PDT

Like an increasing number of others I've 'cut the cord' and only use my mobile for internet access. I use USB tethering to share the data with my other devices. I've done a few benchmarks to determine the USB tethering bandwidth and latency between my recently bought Oneplus 8 and it's tethered device. For testing purposes I connected it directly to my laptop and booted into Windows and Ubuntu. A few issues cropped up that I thought worth highlighting to see if there's anything that can be done to boost them and to get results from others. Relatively high latencies were observed as were connectivity issues during high bandwidth throughput. Results as below

Latency (average of 100 pings, other devices added for comparison)

    Oneplus8

Source Destination Transport Medium Latency (ms)
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Windows) USB2 2.48
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Ubuntu) USB2 1.44
    Laptop (Windows) OnePlus 8 USB2 2.74
    Laptop (Ubuntu) OnePlus 8 USB2 2.41

Source Destination Transport Medium Latency (ms)
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Windows) USB3 3.01
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Ubuntu) USB3 1.49
    Laptop (Windows) OnePlus 8 USB3 3.20
    Laptop (Ubuntu) OnePlus 8 USB3 2.39

    Moto G6 Play (Android 9)

Source Destination Transport Medium Latency (ms)
    Moto G6 Play Laptop (Windows) USB2 0.57
    Moto G6 Play Laptop (Ubuntu) USB2 0.55
    Laptop (Windows) Moto G6 Play USB2 0.86
    Laptop (Ubuntu) Moto G6 Play USB2 0.90

    Samsung XCover3 (Android 5)

Source Destination Transport Medium Latency (ms)
    XCover 3 Laptop (Windows) USB2 0.51
    XCover 3 Laptop (Ubuntu) USB2 0.44
    Laptop (Windows) XCover 3 USB2 0.67
    Laptop (Ubuntu) XCover 3 USB2 0.46

    The latency results shows that

    • The Oneplus 8 has around 3-5 times higher latency than the older and significantly lower specced Samsung XCover3 and Moto G6 Play.
    • The windows latency timings are around twice that of the Unbuntu timings for the Oneplus, the OS type had a minimal effect on the XCover 3 and no influence on the G6
    • USB3 adds another 0.5ms to the round trip times in both directions over USB2 for windows but has no influence when used under Ubuntu
    • The response times from the mobile devices are generally slower than the response times from the laptop

Given the push for 5G for higher bandwidth and lower latencies (when SA 5G NR is implemented at least) it's a step backward to have increased latency times on the user equipment. This will add to the overall latency. It would be interesting to see what latency times other people are getting over USB tethering not just for the Oneplus 8 but for other makes and models too.

Bandwidth (measured using iperf3 server on the laptop and client on the Oneplus via USB3 average of 10 seconds)

    Download

    Source Destination Streams Bandwidth (Mbit/s)
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Windows) 1 565Mbit/s
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Windows) 2 589Mbit/s
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Ubuntu) 1 650mbit/s
    OnePlus 8 Laptop (Ubuntu) 2 652mbit/s

    Upload

    Source Destination Streams Bandwidth (Mbit/s)
    Laptop (Windows) OnePlus 8 1 627Mbit/s
    Laptop (Windows) OnePlus 8 2 875Mbit/s
    Laptop (Ubuntu) OnePlus 8 1 947Mbit/s
    Laptop (Ubuntu) OnePlus 8 2 833Mbit/s

The iperf tests caused stability issues on the Oneplus 8 whilst using USB3. The USB interface would often crash and reset (confirmed via crash log in logcat). No stability issues were identified using USB2 or WiFi. USB2 bandwidth was maxed out so figures not included in the results. Max Wifi speeds were around 550Mbit/s using 5Ghz WiFi 5. I don't have another Wifi 6 device to test with.

    The bandwidth results shows that

    • There's stability issues using USB3 when pushing bandwidth to the limit
    • Both download and uploads were faster in Ubuntu
    • Windows needed two parallel streams to attain top speed whereas in Ubuntu one was sufficient
    • In usage terms max download speeds (from the Oneplus to the laptop) averaged at 652Mbit/s and and upload speed max averaged out at 947Mbit/s. I don't know if this is a hardware or driver/software limit.

With 5G already hitting over 1Gbit/s the tethering bandwidth over USB3 is now the limiting factor. There's plenty of bandwidth available on the underlying USB3 protocol so its up to manufacturers to push the envelope. It's worth mentioning that Oneplus are still one of only a small selection of manufacturers that have implemented USB3 so this is worth commending. Most are still releasing phones restricted to USB2 speeds. I don't have another mobile with USB3 to test with for comparison. As with the latency findings it would be interesting to see what results others are getting for USB3 tethering for both the Oneplus 8 and other devices.

App used for testing on the mobiles was Hurricane Electrics 'he.net Network Tools'

General lack of long-term software updates

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:30 AM PDT

This is an opinion/rant. I think the lack of software updates on Android phones is the main reason they always be second to iPhones.

I was updating my phone every 2 years before. Now I doesn't feel tempted. The new phones doesn't offer much new features. Just because it is a little bit faster and it has a better camera and (arguably) better battery life, i won't upgrade. Every phone is almost the same in the last 4-5 years. The second fact is that the phones are getting ridiculously expensive.

So, I just want to buy the best phone and keep it for 4-5 years. That is my point, i can't do that on android. I need at least security updates, cause I also use banking apps, an payment apps. Even Google doesn't offer updates over 3 years.

One solution is to buy midrange phones, for around half of the price of flagships, and keep upgrading every 2-3 years. I don't want to do that. I like tech, I use my phone a lot. If I can't afford the latest and gratest model, I just simply wait another year, not just to get more budget, but also to justify the purchase.

So, in my case, I doesn't really have an option to keep buying Android phones. I got the Oneplus 7T Pro last year. Oneplus has/had a good reputation with updates. My plan was to use it until it gets at least security updates. Right after I got it Oneplus decided to update only every 2 months.

I had a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge before. I loved it, but after it wasn't updated anymore (that frequently) I always thought it to be risky to use it. It also was full with bloatware, but after I rooted it and installed a light custom rom it ran like a charm. Yet, the phone wasn't that secure anymore after that (Knox is gone, rooted).

My wife uses an iPhone 7. That phone is from the same generation as my S7 edge was. That iPhone still runs perfectly. She will have to replace the battery soon, but the phone is fast, she has the latest OS, she doesn't even think about upgrading. iPhones are expensive, but you can securely use them for 4-5 years.

I love Android, i need the customisation it offers, but if I won't be able to use my current phone for 3-4 years I won't buy and Android phone again.

So, I think, that is why an Android will never be "Premium". Samsung makes some really nice looking phones with serious tech in them. I mean they have some exclusive features I would love to use. But they should offer 4-5 years of software updates, at least for they flagships. Otherwise they can't compete with Apple.
