Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:08 PM PDT (Update : Thanks everyone for the awesome suggestions! Without this subreddit, i would be in the endless sea of youtube videos that might be outdated or bad. I might come back to ask more questions but for now. I'm gonna get an SSD that is at least 1TB if i ever want to do a full switch. I might back up my most important files in google drive or something in that sense. For now, thanks again <3 I feel welcomed) I'm very noobish when it comes to computers and linux caught my eyes because of how more secure and how gaming has gotten better. ( Pop OS! is in my interest after watching a few videos)
2) Is is possible to keep all your files when installing pop os? (I don't have a way to do a backup of my files) 3) Lastly, is there any more benefits of using linux other then security? [link] [comments] |

What is KDE and is it good for beginners. Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:27 AM PDT I've seen videos that kde neon is highly customizable and that is what I want. But I am confused by the different names such as kde neon, kde plasma etc. What exactly are these things. [link] [comments] |
clicked "Open With" on the wrong app cant fix it now Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:15 PM PDT So I went to "open with" on a file and accidentally told it to open it with java which I didn't mean to do and for some reason now anytime I open a folder from my Desktop or notifications it attempts to open it in java which results in an error. switching keyboard layouts language take forever [Ubuntu 20.04] Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT I have an English keyboard layout on my laptop, but I need to write in Portuguese now and then. American keyboard doesn't have "ç" or "éá" and etc. Every time I need to switch between layouts it takes too long in Linux, but in windows, it is instantaneously, I thought it might have something wrong. Difference between Adobe Flash, Adobe Flashplayer and Shockwave Flash Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:56 AM PDT I had to install Flashplayer today for some videoconferencing, and I was surprised because I thought the support for Flashplayer had ended, with HTML5 being the replacement. Turns out only the support for Flash had ended and Flashplayer will be supported till end of 2020. And then when I installed it in Firefox, I found that it was called Shockwave Flash. Now I am confused, and since I could not find any specific details with a quick google search, I thought of asking here. Do let me know if this is not the best place to ask this question. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Got an HP Chromebook 15. Looking to install Linux. Audio editing/Diablo 2 are my main priorities. Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:47 PM PDT Is there a distro that would serve both if there needs the best? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:32 PM PDT Remove Linux Partition Hi guys, sorry for the noob question but I'm still new to Linux. I have Linux Mint in a 2TB hard drive, with 1TB partitioned for Linux and the other 1TB used as a standard Windows storage volume. My question is: how can I combine that 1TB Linux volume back into the volume readable in Windows so that my Linux volume is erased, and I am back to having one 2TB volume? Obviously right now my partition in Windows is only 1TB. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Cacti Monitoring: Configuration file include/config.php is present, but unreadable. Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:33 PM PDT Hi, as the title says, I'm stuck with this problem after following the instructions first from here (for the reqiusites) and then this website (for the nginx config). I'm using CentOS 8 with Nginx and the only thing I changed was the directory of the application ( The logs only shows status 200 so I know nginx can access it, but it just gets stuck at that point. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:36 PM PDT Like the title says. Shopping amazon for for a wireless mouse and keyboard and Iv only had issues with compatibility before with wireless usb doggles [link] [comments] |
Help: GPU drivers not working on Debian 10 Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:21 PM PDT After installing Debian 10 alongside Win10 on a different drive, I booted (into Debian) to find a blinking cursor. Seems as though the driver for my GPU isn't working properly. After switching to integrated graphics, I ran lspci-k to find my installed drivers, and it seems as though the driver is installed? Relevant system specs are as follows:
It's also worth mentioning that earlier when I tried to check support for my GPU, I couldn't access the freedesktop homepage, on any device or network, so it's possible the site was down during the install Where do I go from here? If possible I'd like to avoid using NVIDIA's own drivers. Any help would be greatly appreciated; I'm totally unfamiliar with dedicated GPUs when it comes to Linux :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:28 PM PDT Hi all! Recently, the wifi on LM 19.3 (fully updated) for me has been bugging out. It's been happening more and more often, but every 20 minutes or so the connection stops working although it shows I am still connected. Turning the wifi on and off seems to fix this, but not for long at all. What should I try to resolve this? Do note that I have tried a mobile hotspot as well and received the same problems. Every other device in my home works fine. I also want to note that I'm running a dual boot. My WiFi card recognizes my 5Ghz network on Windows, but only shows the 2.5Ghz on Linux. Why is this the case? [link] [comments] |

How can I prevent some unnecessary processes from running at startup? And a bonus question Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:19 AM PDT Hi all! Using Xubuntu 18.04 on Lenovo V130-14igm. I was just wondering where can I disable some processes from running at startup - especially since processes in question I cannot find in the Whisker Menu > Session & Startup? For example, here is the output of service --status-all
As a bonus side question - why can't I find bluetooth using whatis function? And yeah, bluetooth I want to kill at startup as I never ever use(d) it and can't imagine situation where I would :D Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Questions about setting up virtual machines with VMM and passing through a pcie ethernet adapter. Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:05 PM PDT Forgive me if I'm too much of a noob to even ask these questions properly, I'm kind of learning things as I go to accomplish a goal rather than trying to learn linux, networking, and virtualization properly from the basics. So i have build a server running Ubuntu 20.04 (with GUI, command line only would have slowed me down although I have been setting most things up in the terminal so I'm starting to get the hang of it.) On this server I have installed an I340-T4 intel based four port pcie Ethernet card. I set up a VM using VMM to run pfSense as the router for my home network and in VMM I configured the network connections for the VM to be the 4 ports on the ethernet card, set them all to macvtap with the source mode as "Passthrough" and device model as "e1000" Now here comes the questions. Does this isolate the network adapters on the ethernet card from the rest of the machine? Do I need to do some terminal magic still to blacklist the pcie adapter? If so, what do i need to do? Edit: I have this virtual machine functioning and routing my network traffic just fine, I just want to make sure that it's secure and the network connections it has can't be used to break out into the host from the guest. Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT Hi, I'm thinking of installing a linux os on my old windows tablet and looking for some recommendations. It's a 1ghz 32bit, 1gb ram, 20ish gb disk space. I'm thinking of zorinos lite but unsure if it's ok with touch tablet. [link] [comments] |
Any idea why this is happening? Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:09 PM PDT I just downloaded i3 in Manjaro and when I login into the system, the login screen stays "open/visible". I'm able to open the terminal, and as you can see in the picture the status bar is visible at the bottom of the screen, but I can't really do anything else like use the commands and stuff. http://imgur.com/gallery/qrPaVki Any ideas why is this happening? Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:56 PM PDT Hey all, I've been really wanting to start using Linux as I've only ever used windows in the past, but I can't for the life of me get my WiFi adapter to work, started using a netgear wnda3100v3 and that didn't go well at all on Ubuntu, tried all sorts to get it going. bought a Alfa awus036ah as people had good luck with them, but still nothing, installed mint instead to see if I'd have any better luck and directly after the initial updates and enabling the 8812au driver it worked. Stupidly I didn't test it much before moving my computer back into its usual room (have to move it for Ethernet) just saw it light up and that it was listing connections, but now it's dead and I checked event viewer and it says 8812au: version magic '5.0.0-32 generic SMP mod_unload ' should be '5.3.0-51 generic SMP mod_unload so I've moved it back to the Ethernet to attempt updating this but I'm not sure if this is the 8812au that needs updated or if this is referring to something relating to it. Sorry for the long post. Totally new to Linux and really don't want to give up on using it due to WiFi issues seems like an awesome snappy OS. [link] [comments] |
How to catch a mouse click event in X11? Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:32 PM PDT I actually have no intent in studying X11 lib, I just need to modify sloppy.c script from ratpoison, which changes focus when mouse pointer crosses the border, so that the focus was changed only on click. /ratpoison is dead [link] [comments] |
