Issues after reinstalling windows 10 Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:38 PM PDT Hi all, I've got a Dell XPS 15 9560 and I just did a factory reset on it and reinstalled the windows from scratch. It's the family edition and is up-to-date. However, soon after Windows was ready to be used again I noticed some issues.. I can't open the search bar and clicking on it doesn't do anything (tapping the mouse pad with three fingers also doesn't do anything besides having the loading symbol on the mouse for 2 seconds), same goes for Cortana which actually keeps disappearing after I set it up and I can't search anything when I'm in the Start menu either. Along that, clicking on the battery icon doesn't do anything either. I'll have the loading symbol on the mouse for about 2 seconds and then nothing but hovering over the battery icon will tell me how much battery I've got left. Another issue I've noticed is the opening speed of Windows Explorer. It takes significantly longer to open up then it did before the factory reset which was pretty much instant. Same goes for the Start menu to pop up. It takes 3-4 seconds to open which wasn't the case before.. So far, that's all what I have discovered.. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you! Is there an offline installer for the final batch of Vista updates? Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:48 PM PDT I still have a Windows Vista laptop that I keep in working condition for some occasional legacy applications I need to use. However, for some reason Windows Update hasn't been able to get an update for it since early 2016. It's missing about a year of security updates and everytime I checked for updates, it always searched forever. I figure I might as well try again now to keep Vista as up to date as possible. So is there any offline installer for the latest Vista updates I can use? Or at least anywhere to manually download and install the missing security updates? Thanks! [link] [comments]

From backup restored user temp folders can't be deleted because the path does not exist Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:54 PM PDT Hello there. A few days ago I restored a backup from a customer. Said backup was made with Acronis and from a broken PC and it was only supposed to be stored on the customers server for the time being, but he still wanted to check the files. Since I didn't know which files and he wasn't sure what to check I restored the whole backup, which was basically the whole of D:\ where everything was installed, including Windows. I just restored it to a newly created folder on D:\ on the server. So, unbeknowst to me the backup worked a bit too perfect and of course restored everything including all user/system/trused installer rights and so on. Due to various circumstances I had to delete the files from the server and this is where my problem appeared: There are 2 temp folders inside the restored User folder and I can't delete those. When you go deep enough you can't progress because it tries to open a path that doesn't exist. I suppose since it's not the correct path to begin with and belonging to another user that doesn't even exist on the server. If I try to delete the files nothing happesn. Pressing either DEL on the keyboard or using the context menu by right clicking the file doesn't change it. I don't even get a message, nothing happens at all. Since it's only 23 MB I can't delete it's not that important, but still: Any ideas how to remove these files without having to rely on third party tools? Since reddit is blocked at work and I won't be back there until Monday I can't help with specifics (like the exact path and so on). [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:28 PM PDT Surface laptop 3. Just got it maybe 2 weeks ago. Runs great except for 2 things that are driving my wife insane. Randomly the internet doesn't work on any browser or it won't connect to wifi. Restart usually fixes it. Second issue is that Microsoft office refuses to open any documents that are "protected". Any other computer just opens them and i click the enable button. Here it just opens the little ms word or excel opening box and never actually opens word or excel. Driving my wife nuts which means its my problem... any ideas? [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:04 PM PDT We've been hit twice in the last two weeks with a data encryption ransomware attack. This time it was called Lockbit. The server is running 2008 Server. Is there anyway to legitimately undo the encryption of the files. I renamed the file from .lockbit to .txt and it the text look like something between korean and wingdings. Also, semi-related note: what is FIXVSS.bat and what could happen if someone opened cmd and ran it while everything was encrypted? [link] [comments]

Applocker - .exe's in c:\windows\* Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:25 AM PDT Hi all, Been reading up on implementing applocker and just want a quick steer in the right direction. Basically - I've read through this article https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/windows-defender-application-control/microsoft-recommended-block-rules and MS recommends blocking those .exe's for standard users - a lot of which are found in c:\windows\system32 Now for example, I want to block msbuild.exe, I can see I have multiple msbuilds under c:\windows\Microsoft .net\ What is the best way to block it? Via Publisher? and just select msbuild.exe and any version or Adding an exception to the default rule and manually selecting all the msbuild's (which seems a bit long) Thanks for your help in advance! How can I alter the size of the icons in the Desktop drop menu? Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:48 PM PDT I use the Desktop drop menu, activated by right click on the taskbar, with Desktop shortcuts hidden. Works well, but the icons are too small. Changing the size of the Desktop icons makes no difference. This applies to Windows 7,8,8.1,10 Does anyone know if they can be enlarged? Is it possible to bring the "Sets" feature back? (Tabs in Apps) Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:45 PM PDT Hi there, I really want to have these Tabs in Windows Apps. But the only why i can get it now i by purchasing "Groupy", which i don't want to. So I searched the Internet and found out that this is an experimental feature which was removed in older preview versions. But is it possible to get this back with some registry entries in the 1909 windows version? In the preview it could be done by this:
