    Simple Questions - April 24, 2020

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

My husband has gotten really into computer gaming. I want to do something nice for his cluttered setup. Help?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:44 AM PDT

So my husband has just placed his new gaming pc right in front of my Dell.

The desk is tiny as is, between my pc dell stuffed behind his gaming monitor, along with his ps4, headset, controllers, and the shocking amount of stray wires, I feel a brain aneurysm steadily coming on from the disaster.

I've purchased a large L shaped desk (coming in the mail rn) but I really want to make the space as clean clutter free and pleasant as possible before he turns it into a full on neckbeard nest.

That being said, this isn't technically a pc build type question but more of a pc/monitor desk organization question. I hope that's okay!

    • I want to get led lights like I've seen on reddit

(Couldn't find the pics to stalk comments and see if they explain what stuff they bought) but I think he'd get a kick out of that. I want to put them behind the monitors and behind the desk. Hoping to get one that have different colors so he can choose what color scheme he wants once they're up!

UPDATE: the sub I was looking for for that kind of thing is called 'Battlestation' thank you! I'll be heading there next!

    • I also really want a dual monitor mount.

I tried looking on Amazon but I always get caught up in the bad reviews section and I'm worried I'll get a crappy one and it'll break and both monitors will come crashing down, shatter and explode, house catches on fire, followed by a divorce.. you get the drift. It takes a lot for me to finalize a choice.

    That being said...

Can anyone recommend a cheap-but-durable dual monitor mount that they trust?

    • Are there any tips or tricks to controller/headphone holders/ organization that would look cool?

    • Led strip kits for putting behind the monitors, or are those virtually all the same?

I'll leave buying a gaming seat to him, he's the one using it most but I would love some recommendations that I can send to him. My office chair wasn't made to be used the way he using it, apparently some strange small metal bar already snapped off, I'm just waiting for the whole damn thing to fall apart at this point.

Thank you for any and all tips and suggestions you throw my way, I'm pretty much lost when it comes to this stuff!

    Update:

    • I made this post at like 5 am and clearly didn't edit as much as I should have. I reread it when I opened reddit up today and cringed. Would like to apologize for any poor soul that had to struggle through it and thank you for not giving me too much crap!

    • To clarify, yes, I was talking about 'monitor mounts' not 'PC mounts'.. shows how much I know about this stuff! Lol.

That being said, my Dell is an 'all-in-one' and the only piece is the monitor; there is no external PC. His monitor is only hooked up to the ps4 for now but I have a feeling he'll probably be buying more stuff in the future. He hasn't mentioned anything yet but it's another reason I bought a larger desk. To accommodate whatever stuff he decides to buy later on.

    • Thank you for all your awesome support and advice, I've been reading comments for the last 2.5 hours and more are pouring in, I'll be reading each and every one of them, and am excited to learn something new!

I'm getting tons of suggestions, new ideas, organization tips and just overall useful info so thank you guys for all of it!

I'll continue reading and learning more about this even after I buy all the stuff.

Looks like I'll have to start digging through all the posts on this sub more and soaking up all the info about rgd(?)...Rgb(?) And processors and fans n stuff so I'll be able to hold a conversation about it when he starts bringing it up to me!

Again, thank you for all your help!

Also, I was asked to post a pic. There's not much to post, the new L shaped desk hasn't arrived yet, and everything looks really sad right now, but here you go!

    PC Quarantine Upgrade

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:45 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

So I've come to the conclusion I need to upgrade my CPU as it's a fair few years old. I've recently upgraded my GPU and need to catch it up, my current specs are below:

    MB - Gigabyte Z87X-OC Force CPU - Intel i7-4770k GPU - RTX 2060 Gaming Z RAM - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 4x8GB Case - Anidees AI Crystal Cube ATX

I love my case so I would like to keep that (plus if my partner sees a new case, she'll flip tehe)

I know I can get a slightly better CPU in the 4790k but I want to bring myself up to much more modern times!

    Help!!

    First decent PC

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:05 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I am looking to upgrade my entire setup. I already have a desk and a keyboard, but wanted to upgrade everything else. I'm coming from a i7-4790k OC to 4.9 all core and a gtx 980, and was wondering what kind of improvement I would see. Everything in this pc was designed to allow a easy upgrade path to ryzen 4000 and newer GPUs (possible SLI so thats why the PSU is 1000W) down the line, and to be ultra portable If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know. (Gonna x-post to both r/watercooling and r/HeadphoneAdvice for those parts later) Thanks!

Monitor stuff (note the quick release is there because i work/play from two spaces)

Best optimal case fan position in meshify c?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:32 PM PDT

    Hi there,

So i was wondering what the optimal airflow and position of the fans in my meshify c would be. Can you guys help me?

So a fellow redditor at /amdhelp told me to install 2 140mm upfront intake, 2 140mm up top intake and 1 stock meshify c as exhaust in the rear. I just wanted more insights.

So just to be clear i have the 5 pack 140mm arctic and the 2 120mm stock case fan. I can only install 4 140mm in this case. Parts list is down below.

So in combination with my cpu tower cooler: arctic esports 34 duo which faces 2 ways, my gpu: rx 5700 xt sapphire pulse which has 2 fans facing down and my PSU: Seasonic gx-650 also facing down against the opening with a dust filter bottom, up top dust filter and the mesh dust filter in the front this all shouldnt be a problem with the recommendation above?

    Help is much appreciated!

$900 to $1050 Help would be appreciated

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT

So, this is my first time building a pc and I don't have the money to go overboard and plus since it is my first one, I don't want to spend too much either.

As of right now, I have a 3200 and 2400 RAM. I was wondering if it would be better to go ahead and buy the 3200 instead of having to upgrade in the future or is the 2400 good for what I am going for?

My ideal PC would be to able to play lower end games like; Minecraft, CS:GO, Valorant, LOL but also some AAA games too. I want to be able to play those and games, stream, and edit videos.

I have a link to my list and am asking if y'all could help me lower the price but still be able to do all those things with no problem.

    First PC Build

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:05 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to building PCs. My girlfriend and I recently built a PC for us to share (my first build), however, I would like to get my own. Hers is mainly for gaming, like WOW. Mine will be for gaming but I am also a cybersecurity student and am planning on using this for my work in that as well (running multiple VM's, coding, etc). This is the build that I have come up with.

Does it seem like a solid build for what I need it to do or is it overkill? I'm on a bit of a budget, definitely don't want to spend more than I'm at now with this. If I can save a few dollars anywhere, that'd be great, but if not I am able to spend this much. Thank you in advance for your help!

    My First High-End PC Build

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:09 AM PDT

Finally completed a build I've been wanting to put together for a few years now. My previous build, which I've been gaming on for 4 years, was limited to a budget of around $800. Since that build, I've always been anxious to build a PC with a higher budget so I can have the full gamer experience. So after a lot of saving, I was able to put this build together.

Here is the album. I included some pictures of my setup as well as my racing sim setup which I luckily was able to buy right before the quarantine began. Enjoy!

The only parts that are not in this list are the cablemod cables, PCI-E riser cable and the white key caps on the keyboard. One issue I've run into is having the graphics card vertically mounted in this case. The clearance between the graphics card and the side glass panel is very little which results in the glass getting really hot. The only other issue is getting my cablemod cables to bend correctly. If anyone knows how I can solve these issues, please let me know.

I’ve been looking at some gaming PCs to buy and came across this gaming PC called Breach on the Overclockers site which looked really great for the price. Can you guys tell me if this is good deal or not?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:40 PM PDT

    This is what it has.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Six Core Processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super Graphics, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 480GB SSD, 1TB Hard Drive, Windows 10, 100FPS 1080p

    Breach

I don't know much about gaming pc to say if it's a good one or not. But from what I know it seems to have done high end stuff and I'm not sure if there is a catch.

Can you guys be able to help me on this please.

First time PC Build for Gaming/3D Design

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:32 PM PDT

    Hello!

It'd be awesome if you guys could help me with my first build!

So far I have bought the CPU, Motherboard, HDD and the SSD.

The build that I have in mind will be like this, I'd like to keep my budget as no higher than this, if possible lower. I also live in Canada so I'd prefer the parts that are available.

Would you reccomend that I change any of the parts I'm planning to buy? The only compatiblity issue that PcParts picker tells me is this

" The Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the EVGA BQ 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it. "

    PC Noob trying to upgrade!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:13 PM PDT

    Hi,

I currently have a prebuild that's starting to die on me when playing newer games and I'd like to upgrade.

I appreciate building a computer yourself is much cheaper than buying a prebuild, and it'd be nice to have a quarantine project.

Can someone please look over my build and check for any errors/easy upgrades for little price difference?

My main goal is to run Warzone in as high/consistent/smooth FPS as possible. Similarly any new games that come out that I'll be able to play without my PC completely freezing up. And hopefully something that'll last a few years without turning to rubbish!

Bad Motherboard, considering upgrade while I'm replacing

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:10 PM PDT

In a recent post here I talked about how the BIOS on my motherboard is screwed up. I can't enter it no matter what I do yadayada.

Anyway, I've given up trying to fix it. It seems to be an unfixable on MSI boards, who knows.

I'm using this time to consider upgrading my desktop. Here's what I currently have:

    • CPU: i5-4690k
    • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660
    • Memory: 16GB DDR3
    • Storage: 250gb Samsung EVO 840 SSD + 1TB Western Digital Blue HDD
    • PSU: Corsair HX750
    • MOBO: MSI Z97 Gaming 5
    • OS: Windows 10 Professional

I play on 1080p and am considering upgrading to a 1080p 144hz monitor in the future. If I am to upgrade my motherboard (and not try to buy a used one on ebay like I've been trying lately...) I've decided that a Ryzen 3600 is the CPU I want.

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 3600
    • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1660
    • Memory: ?????
    • Storage: 250gb Samsung EVO 840 SSD + 1TB Western Digital Blue HDD
    • PSU: Corsair HX750
    • MOBO: ?????? x570
    • OS: Windows 10 Professional

I know Ryzen boards can be picky with memory or something. I know I want an x570 board but I don't know what.

    My budget is ~400-450 USD.

The 3600 is at least $180, so that leaves $220-$270 for upgrading mobo and RAM. I prefer the mobo to follow my case scheme of black/red (original I know) but if it's not, that's okay! It's not a dealbreaker.

Are open air cases better or worse then regular cases?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:10 PM PDT

I'm quite a fan of Thermaltake's open air case in the P series. The p3, 5 and 90 are my favorite.

Project crashing, RAM bottleneck, MOBO only supports DDR3! (Thanks in advance for any advice)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:01 PM PDT

I produce music with Ableton and have added real time visuals with TouchDesigner into my workflow.

I'm really starting to see how screwed up 8gb of RAM is for my productivity.

TouchDesigner crashed twice in a row on my most recent project: I'm convinced it will happen again, and I'm pretty sure it's my RAM. (Thank god I saved the project)

    MOBO: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P

    CPU: AMD FX-8350 (8 core x 4.00Ghz)

    GPU: AMD Radeon R9 390 (8GB)

    and...

    RAM: ADATA XPG DDR3-1866 (2x 4GB, running at 1600)

I can't find more of this exact RAM anywhere, and as much as I'd love to upgrade everything for DDR4 Ram that's cost prohibitive. Or is it? Because DDR3 seems way too expensive these days for how old it is.

Would you toss the 4GB sticks and get 16 or 32 GB of DDR3, even though it's overpriced/older?

Or would you bite the bullet and save up for a DDR4 compatible motherboard, possibly upgrading CPU too?

This is making my head spin and I'm stuck if I can't continue my workflow. What do you think are my best options?

Is there any sense in updating an old Dell Studio XPS 8100 or should I bite the bullet and start from scratch?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:39 PM PDT

I recently resurrected an old Dell Studio XPS 8100 when I replaced the graphics card with a used, but perfectly functional MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 970. Before the last graphics card died, it ran Ark, modded Minecraft, Slime Rancher acceptibly, but I had troubleAlt+Tabbing to view websites for game info. With the new graphics card, it run Slime Ranger decently. However, compared to the 4 year old Surface Pro 4 I was using in between, it's a little choppy in odd places. The recent played through of Slime Rancher was ok, just a few pauses when loading into new areas. I didn't mind because I don't have high expectations for my gaming, and I don't play high end games. However, when I click on the Start menu, it's slow to open. Searching from the start menu is slow and sometimes gets stuck. It's dreadfully slow to boot and open Chrome. Space Engineers was ok to play, but painfully slow to load up.

I thought it might be memory. I have 8 GB of RAM, but then I realized so does my husband's PC, and his PC doesn't have any of these slow response time issues. His PC is already 5 years old, but we usually try to get good gaming PCs to last longer on average. It's been a long time since I really understood how to gauge which parts govern what in performance. If an Intel i7 is great, is a 9 year old i7 better than a 5 year old i5? That sort of thing.

I don't mind a little slowness or lower graphic settings in gaming, but I'd like the computer to be a little snappier for opening and closing applications, especially the start menu, and easily switching active application windows. On one hand, I'm a fairly big miser and don't want to spend a lot if I don't have to. I already have to replace a few other things in my home office to deal with recent changes. On the other hand, I bought this PC 9 years ago, I full expect that it has a limited life expectancy. If it's time to replace it outright, I can deal with it.

Below are the current specs and a link to the original Dell specifications. Is there any sense in trying to update this PC or should I just bite the bullet and build a new PC?

    Finalizing 2.500€ - 3.000€ Water Cooled PC

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:49 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

With the upcoming release of the new Microsoft Flight Simulator later this year I'm looking into building a new PC from scratch, my budget is 2.500€ - 3.000€.

I want to put together a machine with sufficient specs, but I also want it to look nice. I love the look of custom water cooling setups, and am willing to put in the work and treat the build more as a project rather than a means to and end. A friend helped me select the required parts from "Aquacomputer and "Water Cool". I can provide a list if needed, but would like to focus on the remaining components. The required specs for FS2020 have been released, and of course I want to meet them as best I can. Thank you for taking the time to review my build! PCPartPicker

PS: PC Part Picker doesn't have the O11 Dynamic XL + vertical GPU mount that I want, SSDs are going to be reused from my current build, monitor is a Samsung C49HG90DMU, water cooling components will cost around 800€, ordering from Germany

First build ever - freezing on startup

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Hey guys, been thinking about doing this for a long time and finally had a buddy help me take the plunge. He helped me pick everything out and has been a massive help, but we're both stuck now.

Essentially what's happening is after I install Windows, it freezes when booting up at the first screen (when it still has the motherboard's logo.) I'm really not even sure where to start asking questions, but none of the guides I've found have really talked about this.

    Here's my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NWBKx6

Any and all help would be massively appreciated

    Should I switch to PC?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:40 PM PDT

Hi everyone, i've been a console gamer my whole life but am considering making the switch to pc gaming. I'm wondering if it would be better to buy a pre built pc or build my own since I have no experience with them? My budget would probably be somewhere from $500-$1000. Thanks for feedback!
