    Reasonably specific requirements

    Reasonably specific requirements

    Reasonably specific requirements

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 12:58 AM PDT

Looking for a laptop to replace my work laptop (4 year old XPS 13) and gaming rig (Ryzen 5 3600 / GTX 1080 / 32GB RAM), would appreciate any suggestions. So far the MSI GS65 or possibly even GS66 - if my budget can stretch that far - seem to be my best bet for what I'm after.

    MUST HAVE

    1. Thunderbolt 3 (so I think 8th gen Intel or higher is necessary for the CPU).
    2. Charge via TB3 / USB-C (when not gaming) - absolute must, just want to hook up to my dock at work and not have to cart the charging brick everywhere.
    3. 2 x NVME M.2 drive slots (at least one will have a 2TB NVME PCIE 3 drive installed in it, bought separately and I don't care what the default drive is that comes with the system, it'll most likely be replaced).
    4. Nvidia GFX card - 1080 or higher.
    5. Min 16GB RAM.
    6. Reasonable battery life for productivity (web browser/Office 365). 6hrs?
    7. Under or as near to 2kg (laptop only) as possible. Definitely under 2.5kg for laptop and absolutely under 3kg including power brick and cables.
    8. IPS panel with great colour accuracy, 1080p is fine.
    9. Relatively thin (2cm and under).
    10. 15" or less.

    NICE TO HAVE

    1. Really good battery life.
    2. SD-Card slot.
    3. RTX graphics, but not essential (suspect a 1660ti would be fine for the gaming and work requirements, but something more powerful is always nice).
    4. Relatively quiet when under load (AAA title gaming).
    5. 120hz + refresh rate.
    6. Web cam at top of screen.
    7. Windows Hello using said webcam.
    8. Built in privacy slide in said webcam.
    9. No over the top gamer aesthetics.
    10. <3.5k AUD, the cheaper the better but willing to pay more if it meets all of my must haves and there's nothing cheaper available. Second hand is also fine.

    DON'T REALLY CARE

    1. Speaker quality - always use headphones.
    2. RGB - single colour backlight on keyboard is fine for me.
    3. Mechanical keyboard - in fact, the quieter the keyboard the better.
    4. > 1080p resolution - 4K isn't necessary for my needs at all, neither is OLED.

    CAN NOT HAVE

    1. AMD APU or GFX - need Intel for TB3, and nVidia for a specific program requiring CUDA cores. I'd actually prefer AMD, but such is life.
    2. Massive power brick.

    All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Razer Blade 15 or MSI GS66 or something better?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:49 PM PDT

I'm stuck between these two and not sure what to go with. Price isn't an issue. Seems like everywhere I look there's something bad to be said about any laptop but Razer in particular has the worst reputation. I'm picking these because they aren't very "Gamer-y" and are pretty thin. But then I just read that all 10th gen Intel chips in Asus laptops are using liquid metal. I hate the designs but maybe that's the way to go. Honestly, buying a laptop is the hardest thing to shop for. So many options and there's issues with everything. Would love some input, thanks!

I currently own a Lincplus 13.3'' laptop that has a horrible battery life and keeps crashing non-stop. I like it's light weight and look, so i'd prefer suggestions that mimic this but with a higher perfomance and battery life. I mainly use my laptop for office work and carry it around everywhere.

In the market for a gaming laptop, but can't decide which one, please advise!

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:30 AM PDT

Hi. I'm on the cusp of buying a gaming laptop, and are undecided between the following two. Which one should I get?

The first option is the MSI GE75 Raider, 9th Gen Intel Core i7 - 10750 with the GeForce RTX 2060, ( https://www.costco.com/msi-ge75-raider-gaming-laptop---10th-gen-intel-core-i7-10750h---geforce-rtx-2060---1080p.product.100568605.html )

and the second option is the new Asus A17 with the Rayzen 4800 chip and the NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1660 TI GPU.Here's a link to the second one: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ASUS-TUF-Gaming-A17/

Both is up there, in my opinion, but I just can't make up my mind since I haven't had a gaming laptop ever, so if you know anything about these two, which would you choose and why?

      17 Inch

UK - General purpose/low level gaming/video streaming - No budget

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:29 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: No budget, but preferably <£2000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? If from reliable/trusted dealer (ie; official Apple refurbs).
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance > Quality > Form > Battery
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Reasonably - want it to be easily portable and fit comfortably in a backpack/suitcase alongside another laptop (ThinkPad)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: Football Manager, Crusader Kings (2, 3 when it comes out). May also use for some audio editing for a podcast.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above - highest possible performance settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?N/A
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking to replace/use alongside a 2015 Macbook Air. My air is still functional but can't handle the highest level of gaming (Football Manager 2020 is too much for it), it's become quite laggy. I'll be taking it with me on work trips alongside my work laptop, so ideally not something too bulky. My initial intention was just to get a new Macbook but I looked at the specs and wasn't particularly impressed by anything. I know there's rumours of a release in a couple of months but thought I'd scout out other options. Thanks!

Canada ~ $1000 CAD Student use

Touchscreen is pretty important. 2 in 1 is good but not necessary. At least 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM, with relatively good resolution (1080p and up). (These are the only computer words I know)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Starter Gaming/Video Laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:52 AM PDT

I'm a gamer with the task of finding a laptop for my non-gamer friend, which is hard with my spec-colored glasses. I'd like to play like one game with them so I want it to be able to handle SOMETHING. Not having a discrete graphics card makes me go UGH.

So can someone please suggest a starter laptop? For example, one that can handle playing Divinity Original Sin 2. Otherwise, they would use it for light "video editing" to make videos for her schoolchildren or fun videos for friends. Mostly browsing the internet and watching youtube videos too.

    Budget is $500-$1000.

    Stimulus Check Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 01:00 AM PDT

    1,200-1,400 budget.

OS: Windows10 and Linux (would prefer to dual boot than use a WSL/VM)

    Microcenter nearby, yes.

Would mainly be used for games. I only play league and WoW:Classic atm because my current pc isn't great. Would love to be able to run emulators: Citra 3ds, Dolphin GC (for netplay), etc.

I also want to be able to use it for "work". Which would be stuff like compiling and running projects in Visual Studios for some casual software development (games, web apps, automations), working with Microsoft Office, creating art in Adobe programs (photoshop and illustrator), and maybe some music production with Ableton.

Would love if it was repairable/easy to clean and maintain to some extent. Haven't been able to get a decent paying job out of college so I need this PC to last me a while. 😓

EDIT: I see some similar posts where ppl are saying I may need to save up more money. Budget could be as high as 2k, but I was looking at the Dell G7 15 7590s for only 1200 and it looks decent.

    School/gaming laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:07 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm going back to school next fall and to be honest I know absolutely nothing about computers. I just need something that could get me through for at least two years and I'm not in any type of rush as I have the next 3 months to wait.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget

$2000USD (Could be more as I have three months before I need it)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes if they fit the requirements

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and battery are the most important but build quality is also a factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important just nothing ridiculously bulky and heavy

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? Ideally around 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

It would be light photo editing, maybe video but unlikely. And the only game would be Rainbow Six Siege.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rainbow Six Siege and decent settings and fps mid to high range

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard and trackpad and a least 1 USB A port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't plan on gaming often on it just whenever I'm not home, this would mainly be for school work and daily use.

    Hi,

Looking to buy a laptop without breaking the bank! I'd want it to be able to game e.g., CoD, LoL etc and I'd want it to run fast. No other requirements (I don't think). Does anyone have any suggestions? Happy to buy outlet / refurbished...

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget £800 max, UK. Ignore title, that's the ideal but I am willing to spend £800.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and reliability over battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not, willing to sacrifice for cost.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Games e.g., CoD, the Witcher 3

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As above, unsure on FPS, I guess just good?

    None.

    Thank you!

Best laptop in given price range for basic usage?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 02:56 AM PDT

    * **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

    650KM (Konvertible Marks) = 360$ USD

    * **Are you open to refurbs/used?**

    yes

    * **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**

performance is #1, build quality #2, battery life #3 (least important because the laptop will always be used strictly plugged in)..

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

not too important, but we do not want a small screen laptop, or a super heavy one

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

15.6" is the sweet spot, but I wouldn't mind 17.3"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Short answer: No.The laptop will be used primarily for basic stuff such as browsing, youtube, and MS Office, it's a laptop for my sister, hence why it is so important to me that I'm posting this here.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

She is not gaming, she needs the best laptop for browsing and basic usage such as Chrome, MS Office, Viber, and basic photo file storage.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

SSD 120GB at least would be great

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I have found these 2 laptops both refurbished:

    1. HP AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, 8GB RAM (ddr3 I believe, not sure?)!, 240GB SSD, 15,6" full HD screen.Costs 332$ (Refurbished)
    2. I talked to my brothers friend who 'allegedly' knows his stuff, and he said that AMD Laptops are pretty slow, so he recommended this: Toshiba C70-B-14h; i5-4210u CPU; R7 M260 GPU, 240 GB SSD, 17.3" screen, also costs 332$ (Refurbished)

I'm having really hard time grasping how could i5-4210u CPU possibly contend with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U CPU, but then again I am not a laptop guy, I am a strict desktop guy, this is really important to me and I would REALLY appreciate if anyone could shed some light with any reply.

    Cheers.

    400-800 AUD Laptop in Australia

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      400-800 AUD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Performance, build quality, battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Totally irrelevant

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Minimum 14 inches prefer 15+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some basic video editing for work and a few basic games. I don't want any lag though.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to play league with no issues and I want the option to play some newer games at ultra low res. But I probably won't play newer games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Mainly looking for 8gb ram, quad core, SSD, at 15+ inches.

This is the one I am considering buying tomorrow. I feel like it's a bit overpriced though. Any suggestions are welcome.

$1200 discreet gaming, good battery life, no gamer-y design

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:27 PM PDT

I posted here a week or two ago and was recommended the MSI PS63 Modern and was heavily considering it but wasn't completely sold and now it seems to be sold out. Interestingly, I also saw a post discussing how it is better to wait on laptops right now and it claimed the ps63 was super overpriced so I kinda feel like I dodged a bullet on that.

What I liked about that computer was that it looked super clean/professional and had great battery life and would probably satisfy my personal gaming needs. I am hoping the find a good alternative and I'm willing to extend my budget to $1200 tops. I would really prefer to be under or around $1000 but something tells me Ill end up in the 1200 range. I've been drooling over the ASUS G14 but thats pushing my budget a bit too far. I love how that laptop looks and its performance seems super good. Fortunately I dont really play too many demanding games so it might be overkill for me (mostly will be playing Valorant, FIFA, Warzone) but ideally Id like to be able to run anything even if its just at medium or occasionally low settings. If it really is advisable to wait on laptops and especially if it is plausable that the G14 gets a price drop/sale in the nearish future I'm down to wait a bit but I've had a valorant key that I havent been able to use bc I have an old macbook air rn for over a week and its lowkey killing me lol.

TLDR: $1200 budget, enough performance to run most (if not all) games at medium(or occasionally low) settings, at least 6-7 hour battery life when browsing internet/watching vids, clean design (not too gamer-y, hopefully good build quality)

Thanks in advance for any input. This subreddit has been super helpful to my laptop research
