6 to 8 comparison - Size, Charging, Battery, Features.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:17 AM PDT

Hey, Thought it might be helpful for someone thinking of upgrading from a Oneplus 6 to NonPro 8, with a few comparisons.

    Charging:

All charging speeds measured in mAh / 5V.

    Charger Oneplus 6 Oneplus 8
Oneplus 6 Dash charger 3270 mAh 3270 mAh
Oneplus 8 WARP charger 3760 mAh 5820 mAh
60W USBC PD charger 1310 mAh 2570 mAh

With the WARP charger I went from:

    0-50% in 22 minutes.

    0-65% in 30 minutes

    0-84% in 40 minutes

    0-100% in 60 minutes

    Size:
Sorry for the poor quality images, Rough size comparison between devices. OP8 is taller but slightly narrower. Oneplus 8 is heavier.

    Front

    Back

    Navigation:

Old Oneplus navigation gestures are gone. The new gestures are good, except for trying to pull hamburger menus from the left which takes some practise.

    New features:

Prompt to wipe camera lens when it's dirty.

Ultrawide is good, Only allows ultrawide video with some options, non 60fps it seems. General cameras are much better with colours. Previously i'd edit pictures in google photos if I was going to post them somewhere. No need now.

    90hz is lovely

Screen in general is a huge upgrade, especially when seen side by side.

Front facing dual speakers are a big upgrade

    Haptic feedback is good

Under display fingerprint sensor is fine. Not really an upgrade or downgrade

Video output through USB C works as expected, Framerate is quite low.

    Wi-Fi is slightly improved.

    Battery

Naturally a new phone with a new (bigger) battery will be an improvement. First 100-0 drain I got 28 hours with 8 hours SOT.

Hope this was helpful for someone.

    OnePlus 8 pro display issues

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:01 PM PDT

Why are none of big YouTuber's talking about this? Search for OnePlus 8 pro display issues on YouTube and you get a bunch of smaller channels talking about it. A lot of the bigger channels talk about how they had the 8 & 8 pro for 2 weeks but none of them noticed or had any display issues?

    I'm not buying it.

OP8 Burn In After 1 Hour

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:51 AM PDT

The Pro, to be specific. Okay I'm paranoid because I've never spent this much on a phone so I checked burn in after setting the phone up and getting it to my liking. The clock is already burned in, and my background I imported from my old phone looks pretty washed out now. I'm coming from a 6 and... I think I like the old display better? Do I just need to give it some time for my eyes to get used to it?

Not having a pre-applied screenprotector on the 8pro sucks.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:08 AM PDT

    As title says.

After a a lot of discrepancies with Amazon my 8pro finally arrived today. First thing I noticed was, that there was no screen protector pre-applied to the screen. Therefore Oneplus included 2 plastic screenprotectors with the box.

Installing them is just a huuuge pain. They're made of thick, sturdy plastic with a prtective film on each side. First of all you can barely apply them without bubbles. Took me 30 minutes of practice with the first one to be confident enough to give it a final try with the 2nd one. Managed to get it done without bubbles. Then tried to peel off the outer protective film (would have left it on tbh but they decided to print on it). Which of course lifted up the protector again. But guess what? Now the screenprotector is lifting up on the edges on it's own and i can't get them to stick back on.

So I guess i'll have to deal with either having to stick the sides back on every time I use the phone or use it without a screenprotector (which i don't want tbh).

Not sure why they didn't just pre-apply one (I know they did in some regions).

    8 Pro System Update: 10.5.5 w/Changelog

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:57 PM PDT

Are there any perfect display OnePlus 8 Pro devices out there?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:57 AM PDT

We keep hearing about display issues (Dark bar near hole punch, green tint, image retention, black crush) but on the poll posted recently on this subreddit, over half reported a perfect display.

I'm trying to figure out if there are actually this many perfect displays out there to gauge whether it's worth getting a replacement device from OnePlus (I have display issues too).

It would be brilliant if anyone with a perfect display could leave a comment/picture. I'm mainly interested in the dark bar around the hole punch and image retention as that definitely seems to be a hardware issue.

New OnePlus User - Is this battery usage normal?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:10 PM PDT

So Ive had the OnePlus 7 Pro and I LOVE it. I've had it a few days and I'm noticing the battery is not lasting all that long (see image link below). I'm coming from the Motorola G7 which had amazing battery life lasting me at least two full days. I'm still happier overall. The trade of coming from budget specs to flagship specs are more than reason enough. Still curious. Is this kind of battery life normal? Thanks in advance for any input.

OP8 Pro - Display Never Has an Issue in Real World - Is All This Drama Way Overblown?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:05 PM PDT

Just got my OP8 Pro and did the display test from the poll thread here. Mine seems to have "the display problem" but I feel like it is so over blown on reddit and forums. In order to get the display to show anything but perfection I have to been in a room with zero light, not low light, no light. I have to use the linked 5% grey image and turn my brightness down to almost zero. If I do those things my screen gets a reddish hue, and a very slight bar at top.

I'm usually super picky about display quality but like wtf? This is what everyone is crying about? I did everything I could in real world usuage and couldn't get any of these problems to show up? Don't get me wrong I'm not saying OP shouldn't address it and patch it or do w/e they can. But all the people up in arms and returning the phone or saying they won't buy one are being ridiculous, no matter what I do I can't get the screen to mess up during actual usage - you know what I bought the phone for. I hope the fix the issue, but I don't give to shits if they don't b/c I don't use my phone in pitch black with only a 5% grey issue.

    Oneplus8 first opinions

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Beautiful phone. Upgraded from the 5. It's bigger (obviously) but it's so good to hold that's not an issue and the extra real estate is amazing.

Having waterfall sides and a punch front camera just add to the luxury aesthetic of a budget-ish flagship. (£640 UK priority shipping and bumper case. Warning: it did come with a clear bumper case which it didn't include in the bundle description, but it's pretty ugly).

The packaging is actually worth a mention, the shrink wrap had a orange tear tab! Just a little thing but made the whole unwrapping so much more of a thing.

It chews the fuck out of battery though. I've had it just over one day so am playing the hell out of it but was seriously worried about the noticeably dropping battery icon.

Looking online this might be the OS with a patch coming soon?

Not a deal breaker though, I'm not an Insta model so it will last me the whole day even first day, 60% pre-charge mullering the fuck out of it.

Couldn't tell you what the default skin is like, I have Nova and Lines pro which basically morphed my old phone setup, themes, layout etc. across, including my music library in less than half an hour including fiddling about.

Bit unsure about that, think I missed the ball-ache of setting up a new phone how you like it a bit.

My missus also just bought the SE (I'm trying to convert her, got her a PC laptop as she has to work from home now and I think it's sinking in that on PC or Android there's usually a fix or workaround to issues as apposed to you're shit out of luck on Apple until they decide to fix it), but yeah, that looks like a killer on the budget market. Fucking future proofed(ish, in terms that it will be upgraded for years) single thread thread chip beating the 865?

I want this to be a 5 year phone. I like buying new tech but a phone IS NOT an every 2 year purchase. So I'll look the fuck after it, I'll buy a €100 hand tooled leather case for it from Noreve, I'll pro all the apps I really like and I will never put it in the top pocket of my shirt so it falls out when I bend over to take a shit!

8/10 until they fix the battery.

8 Pro - Display black crush comparison between different phones (pics)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:17 PM PDT

Alright, here is the comparison of screens between different phones I have currently. OnePlus 8 pro is on the left on all photos. This is after applying the latest update that OnePlus pushed today in the US. Brightness of all phones set around 15 precent. Thought it'll be interesting comparison !!!

OnePlus 8 Pro vs S20 Ultra

OnePlus 8 Pro vs iPhone 11 pro max

OnePlus 8 Pro vs Pixel 4 XL

Image that was used to test

    https://www.rtings.com/images/test-materials/2016/5-percent.png

The first two comparison pics was taken by Pixel and the last one taken by Ultra. If needed I could make all comparisons by taking pics from my wife's phone but I think this gives some comparison between them.

PS: In normal light all screens are fantastic and look fine to my eyes, but if we want to look at pitch dark conditions against dark background here it is.

    Oneplus 8 pro gcam comparison

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:38 AM PDT

So I just upgraded from a pixel 4xl to a oneplus 8 pro and first thing I did was download gcam. One thing Google has always done better in my opinion is taking pictures of people. In this shot, I'd tend to agree the same by using gcam.

This is a comparison of portrait mode on stock vs gcam https://m.imgur.com/a/DvboADs

Let me know if you want to see more comparisons. I still have my pixel so I can do 3 different photos if you want to see the comparison for different things.

Edit: here's the link to gcam. I used the most recent build

Edit 2: Here's some night mode shots. I'll upload more tomorrow and probably just make a new post. https://imgur.com/a/ETEsbPJ

I have some uniformity issues on my OP8 Pro, but not as bad as some that I've seen here. Should I still RMA it?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:42 PM PDT

To be more specific, I've already sent in an RMA but, on looking through other posts, I realised my issue isn't nearly as bad as others.

I also ended up comparing my OP6 and the new OP8 Pro, and the OP6 did still have some uniformity issues, with minor light leaking from the top right corner.

The new OP8 Pro, however, has a relatively more obvious uniformity issue: onepluslightleak.jpg

Is this worth sending back, or should I just hold onto it? To be honest, it doesn't really affect me all that much day-to-day - I mostly notice it a bit while in bed scrolling through things. On the other hand, it did cost nearly $1000...

I don't know. Is this something that's just normal for AMOLED screens? Honestly not that well-versed with how these screens are, this is my first time I've thought to do a thorough check!

EDIT - Update: I wanted to see the phones side by side and thought to take photos of the two (please excuse the poor quality photos!). On the left is the OP8 Pro and the right is the OP6. Honestly the biggest things it's told me is that my eyes suck and I clearly don't notice these imperfections all that much!)

OP 8 Pro - Set 48mpx as default

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:33 PM PDT

Is there a way to set the 48mpx as default on the 8 Pro? Right now it defaults 12mpx and makes you change it to 48 each time you open the app.

Anyone here with green tint and waiting for OTA?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:05 PM PDT

Tryna see if im one of the only few waiting..

Thought display was really good whist setting up the phone but after a few hours I've noticed the green tint, I'm not able to check in a dark room but I can see the green'ish tint whilst the phone has a white background at 20-40%

I've only seen that the pro will be receiving an update to fix it but I'm assuming the standard model will also receive it too.

60hz mode helps a little and it's weird because tilting the phone up or down a little the green'ish goes away..

Got 30 days to return so gonna give them at least 2 weeks to fix it

OP7 Pro bad camera quality in social apps

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I updated to OB12 and now when I try to take video for example in messenger, it is like it's recorded on Samsung which means it has very high(or low?) shutter speed and it isn't as smooth (especially in dark areas). It was good before the update. Has anyone else experienced this?

Software Update Request For Display Adaptive Brightness!! Hey OnePlus!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:21 AM PDT

    Hey OnePlus! Do this!

This ought to be a extremely simple software update that I love to see in next update!

Allow us to set a minimum Brightness setting! I like Adaptive Brightness idea, but every phone I've ever had it goes too low!! Energy savings is good idea for increasing battery life but not if I have to constantly kick it back higher all the time! Maybe even allow a Maximum Bright setting too!

    Please OnePlus! Do this!
