Understanding MBR, GPT, UEFI, BIOS, and GRUB

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:11 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have problems wrapping my head around MBR, GPT, UEFI, and BIOS.

I understand that BIOS and MBR were first. BIOS is located on the mainboard and is what makes a PC with all its hardware startup.

The MBR is the first part on the hard drive which contains information about how the partitions of the hard drive are arranged and where the BIOS has to look to start up the OS located on the hard drive.

And this how I remember it working when there are multiple hard drives with an OS on it. The BIOS itself would pop up a menu asking which OS from which hard drive I want to start.

Now UEFI and GPT are where I lose it. Both are newer/updated versions of BIOS and MBR. As far as I understand UEFI has some general improvements and is designed to work with a hard drive that uses GPT which allows for more partitions and bigger drives. So why is UEFI so much different to BIOS and what the hell is GRUB in all of that.

I thought the thing that makes the OS on a hard drive start (bootloader) is baked into BIOS and UEFI, so why do I have to install like a custom one?

And it gets even weirder when combining Windows and Linux.

Let's say I have two hard drives plugged into my UEFI motherboard.

    Disk A: Windows, GPT
    Disk B: empty

Now I install Manjaro on the Disk B, I pick the MBR option, but then it looks like this:

    Disk A: Windows, GRUB, GPT
    Disk B: Manjaro, MBR

And in the UEFI menu it looks like this:

    Manjaro (Disk A)
    Windows (Disk A)

So does this mean I now have two separate bootloaders on my Disk A? One by Windows and the other one being GRUB which actually leads to Manjaro or Windows?

Why all of this fuss? Why cant the bootloaders be on the hard drive where the OS is actually located and UEFI asks you which one you want to start?

Is it safe to remove the GRUB on Disk A without breaking Windows or the bootloader for Windows? (When I tried Kubuntu it seemingly replaced the windows bootloader with GRUB and when I wanted to uninstall Kubuntu it failed to properly restore the Windows bootloader which made it unable for me to start Windows again)

Right Speaker not working, first time Linux

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello there,

Recently bought an Asus M570DD without OS. Happy with it thus far, installed newest Ubuntu but now I've run into a problem. Already during the installation I noticed sound only coming from the left speaker (I mean system sounds from going backwards when I couldn't I think). Testing it in the settings revealed there's indeed no sound from the right speaker at all. I tried a headset, which works just fine. Then I googled the issue, found a few threads on the internet dealing with similar issues and attempted some solutions.

I downloaded and messed with both pulseaudio control and alsamixer, as outlined here: https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/solved-no-left-channel-sound/1026That yielded no results, since everything seems to be in working order, not unbalanced, no audio when fully moved to the right, and several restarts also didn't change anything. Then I tried Manjaro using virtualbox because I read somewhere that worked for someone and it was specifially Ubuntu causing the problem. Booted it, installed it, played a youtube video, same results.

I don't have a spare windows CD lying around and Windows was the reason I wanted to make the switch to Linux in the first place (that and the 80€ price tag for Win10 Basic, which I never would have used anyway).

So does my laptop just have a broken right speaker? Does anyone know a definitive way to know or to fix the issue? I mean I can just send it back and get a replacement, but A) that means at least another week of waiting, B) if it's not actually broken, the problem isn't being dealt with and C) if B) is the case, then that would just be a waste of resources. So I want to make sure.

My OS is Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64 bit, Gnome Version 3.36.1, my hardware is as I mentioned the Asus M570DD with a AMD® Ryzen 5 3500u with radeon vega mobile gfx × 8 and a GTX 1050. My output device is listed as Speakers - Family 17h (Models 10h-1fh) HD Audio Controller

This is my first time both working with Linux and posting on Reddit, be gentle :-*

And let me know if there's any other information I can provide to help with this.

HDD reading problem in Ubuntu 20.04

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:09 PM PDT

Hi, I'm new with Linux and I'm having some problems with a HDD that I use just for data storage. In windows I could write and delete files and folders with no problem, but in Ubuntu i can't. The disk has no OS installed. 1 - when I turn on the pc, boot into Ubuntu and open qbittorrent to seed the files I have on that disk, the .torrent archives can't find the files on their destination. After I manually open the disk with files manager they work properly. 2 - I can't delete any files or directories in that disk with Ubuntu, only thing I can do is writing. I checked the permission and writing and reading are enabled. 3 - I dont know how to create a shortcut in desktop for this disk. This is not very important indeed, but if anyone knows...

Any help will be appreciated friends! Thank you very much and just for you to know Im loving Linux world.

Need help with remapping certain keys

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:44 AM PDT

TL;DR I need to know how to properly remap ~ (being able to use is as a proper accent key) and to use Shift + Caps to toggle CapsLock in a 60% keyboard.

I have and intend to keep using a 60% keyboard (reference for anyone that doesn't know what one looks like). And usually with this form factor the Fn key is your best friend for type anything else you need, but the one I have uses a really weird layer style that I grew to hate. And with Windows it was pretty simple to solve, I used an AutoHotkey script to have CapsLock as a Fn key (and used Shift + Caps to toggle CapsLock) and mapped everything else to Caps + a certain key.

But with Linux I mapped Caps as an Hyper key (which also means no more Shift + Caps) but I'm having this issue with the tilde key specifically (~) where if I use AutoKey to map it to the same command I used to use it just register as the tilde without being able to use it as an accent key for other letters (ex.: ã, ẽ, etc.).

The solution I used to use was to literally map every single one of this accented keys to a keybind, but there has to be a better way to do this, so I came here for some help.

Making a PC for my family

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:37 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

My family has been using an outdated Mac for years now and they have thoroughly riddled it with adware and maybe even genuinely malicious malware. I have enough spare parts to construct a very nice desktop, and I was wondering what the best OS/Desktop Environment would be for former Mac users. I'm also looking for a secure distro that will be more resistant to malware and adware (I know I have to also make sure they don't install it themselves).

    Stats for new pc: i7-8700 16gb ddr4 2666mhz cl16 GeForce 1660 ti 256gb M.2 ssd + 1tb hdd

From what I've tried so far, I really like Manjaro with Xfce and Ubuntu 18.04 with default DE. I've seen ElementaryOS, PopOS, and Deepin as well, and they look like good options as well.

Converting to a Linux system for them is going to be a bit of a shock, but they mostly do web browsing and the like. I am also leaning toward Deepin or Manjaro since I use Debian flavors and Manjaro as my primary OSes (and they will definitely need tech support either through wikis or over the phone). I would really appreciate any insight you guys might have. Thank you for reading!

Is it advisable to share the same /home partition hrough multiple distros on the same machine?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:16 AM PDT

    Hi.
I'm trying to put to use an olf MacBook pro, from 2011, and am installing Linux on it.
I'm trying several distros, so, my idea is to have at least 2 distros simultaneously in that machine, so that I can use the one I like/fits me the most, and the other to try it out.
What I would like to know is, if it is advisable to use one partition mounted as /home shared by the two. I always use the same username.
My idea is to share work and some common apps, like Visual Studio Code and Steam for example.
    Thanks.

    Ubuntu on Mac

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:01 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

So lately I've been trying to create an external SSD to boot Linux from on my MacBook. I followed the guide on the Ubuntu website but every time I use Etcher to make the USB bootable an error message pops up saying the drive is unreadable. Tried to boot from it anyways and not successful. I'm new to Linux, so I may be doing something wrong. Can anyone help, or does anyone have a guide for Mac that works? Thanks in advance

    Vulkan not working Ubuntu 20.04

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have tried to switch to linux on my main desktop PC.

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and tried to launch steam games, namely Gauntlet Slayer edition. It did not work, and as far as I can tell the source of the problem is that vulkan is not working.

When I call vulkaninfo this is what I get (same when called as root):

ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libvulkan_radeon.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libvulkan_intel.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 /build/vulkan-tools-KEbD_A/vulkan-tools-1.2.131.1+dfsg1/vulkaninfo/vulkaninfo.h:477: failed with ERROR_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

I have mesa-vulkan-drivers installed, as well as the i386 version. These are the things that I found, that could case this issue.

    lshw -c video output:

    *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Cape Verde PRO [Radeon HD 7750/8740 / R7 250E] vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0 version: 00 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=radeon latency=0 resources: irq:39 memory:e0000000-efffffff memory:f7e00000-f7e3ffff ioport:e000(size=256) memory:c0000-dffff

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have some experience with linux, but never messed around with GPU drivers.

    Thank you in advance!

    Portable Linux Distro Help

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:29 AM PDT

I'm after a linux distro that I can run from a USB HDD. However, the only PC I have full-time access to is my work laptop (I can borrow my partner's laptop sometimes, but not always; and I lent a friend my personal laptop about a fortnight before the lockdown started).

I'm basically looking to be able to play games using Lutris and WINE (specifically, MTG Arena), and potentially Steam. I've also got some Java games that I'd like to be available too (Xmage and VASSAL, specifically).

So far, I've tested Puppy Linux and Lubuntu.

Puppy works fine - though it's a bit barebones and difficult to get stuff like java and lutris installed. I'm sure I can get it to work eventually though.

Lubuntu only works in "Try Without Installing" mode (which isn't persistent) - I've tested installing it onto a USB drive (from another acting as the live CD, and with the USB set as boot), but this trips BitLocker to request a password I don't have available.

Can anyone suggest any other distros or am I just going to have to use Puppy? Or if I'm using the wrong language to describe what I'm after, please can you correct me so I can search the correct thing.

    Spotifyd on ZorinOS

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:50 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have tried to get Spotifyd working on ZorinOS, but the installation instructions are rather confusing. I've tried multiple ways of installing it, but when it comes down to it, nothing seems to work. If someone could help me through installing this I'd be very grateful. https://github.com/Spotifyd/spotifyd. It's difficult to accurately describe what I have tried, because I've spent multiple hours screwing around with different methods. The GitHub page installation instructions are rather difficult to follow for someone new to Linux.

    Fedora and World of Warcraft

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:09 PM PDT

Thanks for checking in on this post.

I've been using Fedora for about 6 months and am really liking it. I'm considering getting myself a thinkpad or librem here over the next couple of months and running qubes with Fedora. However, in quarantine, I'd really like to pass some time playing classic wow. You know, the one that your toaster oven can probably run these days. However, I'm concerned I won't be able to run it in on Qubes because the VM architecture or just on linux in general. My thought is to dual-boot windows with fedora (and later qubes) but I'm concerned other issues I might not even be aware of yet or just latency in doing that. Would anyone have any insight in doing this? Maybe there is an even better way to accomplish what I'm trying to get to.

    Thank you!

    Snapcraft Gnome Integration

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:55 AM PDT

    Hello, all!

I have been trying to integrate Snapcraft applications into my new CentOS install and can't get them to show up in the Gnome application menu. When I install a snap, I can launch the application from the terminal, but can't get the application to show in the app list. There are no error messages, and I have rebooted that computer since installing snapcraft, creating the symlink to enable classic snap support, and installing snapd. No errors are given during install, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the snapcraft applications and the snapcraft services several times. Any
    suggestions?
