New Mint won't shut down Surface Pro 7

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:26 PM PDT

First-time install of Mint 19.3 (dual boot with Windows 10) on Surface Pro 7. Multiple glitches that I've slowly worked through (no Wifi adapter -- solved, no touchscreen support -- left to Windows, etc), but I'm stumped by the fact that Mint doesn't seem to be able to shut down the tablet. It gets to the Mint logo, then hangs, and I have to shut it down by holding the power button for 15 secs. I'm sorry, I have no idea what other data might be useful, but I'm happy to update with anything requested. Thank you so much for any help!

Thinking of converting a Lenovo 110-15ISK from Windows 10 to Linux, which build would be best for a first one ever?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:35 PM PDT

This laptop is a couple years old. It gets slower by the year as well. And it basically only existed to stream content to the living room entertainment center. But, with the Nvidia Shield and PLEX, this laptop has been relieved of duty and is now free for, whatever i guess. We have gaming capable PCs already so really I just want something functional that doesn't run slow as shit and lag when I do complex tasks like, scroll down the start menu apparently.

    It has an i3 6100 2.3ghz and 6GB ram.

Concerns about Linux security - Which distributions are best maintained and audited?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:24 AM PDT

I find a lot of people making points that Linux isn't actually that secure especially compared to Windows and MacOS since they apparently have more security features and such, and the only reason Linux appears to be more secure is because Linux desktop users are a much smaller target than Windows or Mac users.

Though I don't agree that windows is a "secure OS" for obvious reasons, it did make me think about trusting Linux distributions. Which distributions have the most and best qualified developers maintaining and auditing code?

Set HDMI settings in Ubuntu Server on a RaspberryPi

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I have been pouring over the internet and so far all of the 'solutions' are either fr Rasbian OS or regular Linux with a Desktop.

My problem is the display from my Pi is too big and is disappearing off the sides and bottom of my TV.

    I'm using a RaspberryPi 3. Ubuntu Linux v20.04 LTS for Arm x64

This version of Linux does not have a desktop, no GUI, and xrandr is no pre-installed and I was unable to install it.

Without using a GUI, or xrandr, how can I fix my display?

What does it mean to "link" gcc and g++ to gcc-5?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:55 PM PDT

I'm trying to build some software, and a step listed here: http://www.nemotos.net/?p=1878 says to "Link gcc and g++ to gcc-5 and g++-5 (for Ubuntu 14.04)"

Google tells me that gcc is a compiler for various C languages. I guess g++ is the version used for C++, and I assume the 5 denotes version. But what does it mean to link two compilers and what does that have to do with the building process?

What brands gpu and cpu have better linux support?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:27 PM PDT

I have finally rendered myself capable of building a gaming pc, but I want to make sure I can dual boot linux for anything that doesn't require windows and idk what brand gpu and cpu is better for linux. I know drivers are a consistent problem in linux, but I want to make sure that what I get actually works.

This is the list I'm considering btw: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jVfwFG

Why don't all distros use the latest kernel?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 10:21 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have been looking into building a custom kernel lately, specifically for debian if it makes any difference. I saw a heavily worded email from Linus saying that userspace must never break because of changes in the kernel.

Additionally debian currently use version 4.19 of the kernel (i think) while the latest version is 5.6.

So what features of the kernel might break a distro, so that the maintainers will choose not to upgrade the kernel version? Or is it because version 4.19 (for example) is thought to be a mature version, and they will not use a newer one, until it has been tested for long enough that they believe contains no major bugs?

I'm having some trouble with setting up dual monitor [Plasma 5 - Arch linux]

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT

I have recently received a quite old monitor (it doesn't have HDMI or Display port, just VGA) but it's 720p so I tried to use it as my second monitor.

The problem is that I have a GTX 1660 and until now, I was using the HDMI port only to use my monitor. But the old monitor doesn't have HDMI and my graphic card doesn't support VGA. I updated the kernel, so that's not the problem.

What I decided to do was using my integrated graphics (Intel) for the second monitor. But when I tried, it doesn't have signal. I installed various drivers, for intel and for nvidia but it doesn't seem to work. I thought that was a Plasma issue, but I installed XFCE and it didn't work. I also tried a live USB with Linux Mint, but nothing worked.

Xrandr only shows the HDMI1. I tried to add the VGA1 manually, but it didn't work. So, after reading some old questions on forums I realised that it's a xorg config problem, but I don't know how to deal with it. (I tried optimus-manager but it's for switching between Nvidia and Intel in laptops)

Anyone has being in the same situation? Any solution? Thanks in advance

Is there a graphical user interface app for proton VPN on Manjaro?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:51 PM PDT

I went to site only to find the horror waiting for me there. Searched everywhere but couldn't find anything.

Also, why is it like this? Even Nord was only offering a command line version. I get that it may be preferred by Linux veterans but not even giving a graphical option is baffling and a bit discouraging for noobies like me.

    Linux for old touchscreen PC

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 05:46 PM PDT

I have this old Dell Vostro 360 all-in-one computer. Intel i3, 4 gb ram. It had Linux Mint on it and was used primarily for Netflix and Kodi until hard drive died. Which of the beginner friendly distros would both run well on such an old computer and at same time have a decent touchscreen support so I can drop the keyboard and mouse altogether? Just trying to revive it to be useful again. Or possibly just turning it into mix of media center and retropie.

I was caught in a boot loop and now I'm suddenly not

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:15 PM PDT

So I was caught in a boot loop and looking through a bunch of solutions on how to fix this from Ubuntu 18.04. I saw a bunch of stuff about Xauthority and lightdm but then when I was trying to get to my Grubloader it suddenly booted just fine. Is there anything I can check while it's loaded to make sure it doesn't go back to being in a loop.

The other thing I should mention is I have an Nvidia 1050 and was worried the driver had been swapped over to the generic driver again. The Nvidia driver is still installed but I'm not sure how to check if it's running. The card is currently not in and I'm running off the motherboard.

Scaling resolution on an external monitor (Mint 19.3)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:57 PM PDT

    Hi,

Brand new to the community and trying to get my hands around all of the customization. Appreciate any help.

Installed Mint 19.3 Cinnamon (is that how you refer to it?) on Surface Pro 7, dual boot with Windows 10. I have an external monitor (HP 22cwa, 1920x1080, other specs here: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c04837546) that I connect via a USB-C to HDMI cable. The monitor is detected and does display... sorta.

Right now, it shows the second monitor as a display to the left of the Surface (appropriately), but with the double scale that I've applied to the Surface display (resolution 2736x1824), such that items are terribly large on the external screen (of course) and the screen isn't even completely visible in one shot (i.e., the mouse drags the screen into view when you scroll off the top and bottom edges).

I've attempted to change the scale on just the external monitor without success. I've also tried multiple variations of this command:

    $ xrandr --output DP-1 --scale 2.5x2.5 --panning 4800x2700+2736+0 --fb 7536x2700 --left-of eDP-1

but while it occasionally made the sizing appropriate, it ended up causing multiple issues each iteration:

    - duplicating the screen (instead of extending),

    - reducing the used space on the external monitor (e.g., a large black bar at the bottom), or

    - turning off (?) the monitor on the Surface altogether.

I've searched for various solutions with external monitors combined with HiDPI computers (I think that's my situation), but no other viable options presented themselves.

    Again, greatly appreciate any help!
