LPT: Don't Buy New Laptops now Unless you Really Need them Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:11 PM PDT Hi guys, Most of you know me from guideposts like this list of best laptops to buy, but today is a different post. Recently the prices of most of the good laptops that we recommend around here often are out of stock, or nearing out of stock, and some 3rd party sellers are taking advantage of that and increasing prices. I am not sure how long this will last, but if you want a new laptop but don't really need it, then I suggest you hold a little longer before buying, below is the laptops I know are overpriced, you are welcome to add more in the comments and I will add it to OP, also below those I will try to link some good laptops that still offer good value for money, this will not be a comprehensive list, just what I will come across : Overpriced laptops Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 version Acer Predator Helios 300 i5 version current price is okish but it dropped to 900 often MSI PS63 Modern This jumped almost 50% please don't get it at this high of a price Lenovo Yoga 730 4k configuration Again almost 30% jump in price Acer Aspire 5 Most of its configurations are overpriced Side Note: If you want to check if the one you are buying is overpriced or not let me know and I will look into it for you. 400 000 HUF in Hungary (It's around $1220 to give a better perspective)
Yes, I am.
Out of those choices, battery life and specs would probably serve the best for me. 2 in 1 is kinda useless for what I'm using it for
So right now I'm using an ASUS X550LB, the one with the Intel i5 and 8GB ram. So really anything at or better than that in terms of weight and thinness is cool with me
I love the 12.5-14 inch range a whole lot. 15" is too big to me for travelling.
Will be using the laptop for DAWs like Ableton, Pro Tools, and occasionally for school/work. Maybe some light photo/video editing, but nothing too serious. As long as it can handle itself on mediocre Ableton and Pro Tools projects, it should be good.
N/A.
I would love some of that reliable build quality like what the old lenovos had. A good keyboard and touchpad is also great. Also make sure it has at least 1 USB A port, and a fingerprint reader would be nice too, but not needed.

800Canadian before taxes
absolutely as long as there's a decent warrenty
Rugged. I have a ac adaptor in my car so battery life isn't a priority when out shootinh. Maybe 3-4hours atleast?
A plus, but not my main pruority
My setup only fits a 15 inch really
Lightroom w/ 1-5k imports Photoshop with multiple high res(30-40mp images loaded Maybe some light gaming. I doubt anything that would be a struggle. Drone sims. Tabletop sim. Maybe cutting some go pro footage in the near future. I'm doing some of it for fun lately.
A decent screen is a must, I want my blacks black and my colours accurate. Built in Micro SD reader would be a plus.
My 5 year old editing laptop just took a dump. I will be using this laptop for work and casual. I have a gaming desktop i share with my s/o but I prefer using a laptop in my office. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:28 AM PDT Alright, so since my old HP is completly gone I need a new laptop for the school year. Basically what I would need is something that I can write on with a Stylus/Pen. It would be also optimal if i could play some Games like Forza Horizon or Gta (doen't need to be ultra settings, just like, jk, something that gets me more than 5fps). My Budget would be around 1000 CHF, preferably less. Can you guys help? Thanks in advance. I don't really care about weight, size or smth. Just really need a laptop to play and study on. Are you open to refurbs/used?
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Grad Student Looking to Balance Work and Gaming <$1600 USD Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:07 AM PDT I'm a grad student in the midst of dissertation writing looking to replace my Dell XPS15 that is about 4 years old and starting to show its age. The primary use of my laptop is work, so lots of note taking and writing, so a good keyboard is a must. I don't have an office and I commute for work, so portability is something I really like. I'll often have to have lots of PDFs and image files (25+) open as I write, so I need something that won't stutter or slowdown with that going on. With the onset of remote teaching, I also now have to record and upload lectures to YouTube for my students so anything that can do that quickly is a plus. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I do enjoy some more demanding titles that have outclassed my current PC. In general I use my PC to play the kinda of strategy and simulation games that don't get put on consoles. I'm a big fan of the Total War series and would love to be able to play Warhammer 2 (something my current PC really can't do). Beyond that, I'm a Civ addict, and thought my PC can play that now it slows to a crawl by late game. Occasionally I'll play a FPS or the like, but usually not too often. I'm 100% against anything that has an overly "gamery" look to it and would prefer a machine that runs pretty quiet (and least when I'm not doing anything super intense) since I do bring my laptop to seminars and the like. I realize laptops are about trade-offs, and I would pick the work features listed in the top paragraph over the gaming ones in the bottom if forced. I'm not in a rush to get something new, so I'm happy to wait for a bit if people think good things are on the horizon. [link] [comments] |

Looking for a meaningful upgrade to an OG Surface Book Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:07 AM PDT Budget is 2-3000 USD preferably closer to 2K. I'm open to used or refurbished. I'm looking for a 2 in 1 with good battery and performance. Weight and thinness is unimportant. Screen Size I prefer 15inches I will be doing photo editing, video editing and gaming. I want to play games like Doom Eternal and Modern Warfare on relatively high of highest settings. Good keyboard, sound, display and good pen support as I am an artist. Original post: I am looking for a laptop that is a 2 in 1, with the best display, pen support, GPU for gaming and for creative purposes such as photo editing and video editing. Pretty much an artist quality 2 in 1 with great gaming capabilities [link] [comments] |

[ITALY / 400 €] Laptop with touchscreen for my (somewhat technologically impaired) father Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:25 AM PDT Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Italy, budget is around 400 euros Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I need a pretty basic device with touch and physical keyboard (detachable is ok), priorities would be decent build quality and battery life. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a priority. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I think around 13 inches would be the good compromise between readability and portability Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. none whatsoever, it would only be used for internet browsing and word processing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? nope Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? it needs a keyboard as well as touch screen Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically, due to covid-19 my father has found the need to do more work from home than ever before. He's not completely tech impaired but also not great. He has an iphone and can browse the internet a bit on his pc at work. He basically needs something that - runs word (no alternative word processors) - can browse the internet - has a touch screen (which is easier to use) and also a physical keyboard (detachable would be ok) - is portable but no need for super thin or super light. He has a data plan on his phone that he could share with the device, but if it could also run with a sim card it would be a bonus. He needs something simple to use with basically minimum processing power, so I'd rather not spend more than necessary for extra specs. Thanks to everybody. [link] [comments] |
Is the Dell XPS 15 good for a student with moderate gaming? Posted: 27 Apr 2020 08:47 AM PDT I'm in the market to buy a new laptop. I usually buy pretty cheap ($400ish) acers, mainly for school/general stuff. But I am able to push liiiiight gaming out of them, on the lowest of low settings of course. They get the job done but I'm pretty done with them. They age out quickly, they're slow to start and do simple things sometimes, and the few games I play don't run too well. So I'm in the market to buy a good premium laptop. I've thought about MacBooks but it seems like I'd be paying 1,300 extra for a name compared to the XPS 15. But is the XPS what I want? I must admit I do really like the build quality of MacBooks, they're really well made. Is the XPS on par in terms of build quality? If not, is there a windows laptop that is? I don't want a cheap acer that's made of plastic with a crap trackpad and ugly screen. Again, primarily need it for school and general usage. And I'm not a heavy pc gamer. I primarily play on console. But I do play Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft, Civilization, stardew valley, and recently I've been playing Hearts of Iron. And I don't need 120FPS or 8k graphics. Just being able to play on recommended settings would be nice. Currently I have to turn off every visual add on just to get games like Civ, KSP, or HOI to run at a slow pace. So I don't need crazy specs but I do want to be able to do almost anything without stuttering or long wait times. Or freezing. God I'm so tired of the freezing. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
MSI GF65 Thin or ASUS ROG Strix G G531GU? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:32 AM PDT Hello people, MSI: i5 9300H, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, GTX 1660ti ASUS: i5 9300H, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 2060 Now, I know 2060 is a better GPU. But from what i heard, ASUS has better design, better cooling, a lil better and brighter screen. MSI has (read on the net) thermal problems and worse touchpad. They have exactly the same price. What should I do? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:34 PM PDT I was considering a laptop for 2D (and 3D compatible) animation, and was looking at a Surface book 2. I was wondering if that was the best option? If anyone has info on this laptop or some comparable alternatives it would be much appreciated LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
$2500 max, but fairly flexible
No
I want something with very high performance. It needs USB and storage ports as well, and a 2-in-1 would be nice but not mandatory. Decent battery life.
Not as important but something lighter would be nice as I'll be carting it around a campus every so often
Around 15 inches, but it's very flexible.
Photoshop and Other Adobe Creative Cloud Platforms. I'll likely be using Maya on it in the future.
N/A.
Since I'll be using it for animation it has to have a nice CPU (i7 is what I'm mostly seeing recommended but I'm game for better suggestions). CPU has to have a very good turbo boost clock because of the programs I'll be running, RAM needs to be 16+ GB, I would prefer 32. 500+ GB of storage at at minimum. If I can't find a laptop with these specs something that I could reliably upgrade when I need to would be nice.
Again, I'm seriously considering a surface book 2 but I'm hesitating because I feel like there might be better options for animation. Thanks for all the help, this is my first time on here so if you guys need further clarification let me know. [link] [comments] |

Not that important but would be an added bonus if thinner. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches give or take. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good range of IO ports: Ethernet, multiple USB 3.1 ports and at least one USB C port, SD Card reader(optional), HDMI and display port. Prefer a keyboard that is illuminated and reliable. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I mostly want to use a new computer for photo editing so i'm looking for something with color accuracy, but I'd also like to start gaming and play some modern titles without thermal throttling or other issues. From what I can gather on my own is that the MSI GS66 with a 10th gen i7 is a decent machine that could accommodate my usage but I'd like some feedback before I make my final decision.
