cat3 and cat 5 ethernet cables from old telephone and low voltage wires Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:45 PM PDT I got a 1960s house with either 4 pronged or regular telephone wire in every room. They are of no use as telephone jacks, but I would like to have Ethernet runs throughout the house. And I am probably 2-5 years away from having that put in. Four prong looks like: https://i.imgur.com/rzLdD6T.jpg Regular looks like: https://i.imgur.com/UBYfkPb.jpg I googled it and it looks like I can make cat3 out of these if they are twisted pair. But I don't think they are: https://i.imgur.com/n3ZmigP.jpg Looks like straight pair to me. So am I out of luck? Cable runs are anywhere from 20 to 60 ft. I will try it but looking for some insights from anyone who has already done this. Also would poe work over cat3? I would like to power some poe cameras. In addition, Some of the rooms have what was labeled as covad dsl cables. https://i.imgur.com/SUgkU2r.jpg I'm not sure how many cables those are, but its way more than 8. Again doesnt look like twisted pair. Dare I hope for cat 5 gigabit with poe? Anyone have any real life experience with this? Finally, I have some low voltage relay cables for scene lighting: https://i.imgur.com/NFCXpXj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/noYZRzp.jpgCan I use this at all for cat 5? Not sure if its twisted pair, but there are at least 24 cables in there. My imagination wonders if I can make 3 cat 5s out of this and get 3 gigs out of it with LAG switches somehow. But my brain tells me this won't work. There is two interesting uses for these cables for me. 1 is positioned from basement to attic. So it could extend my internet to attic and thus I can branch out ethernet from there. Secondly, there is one position next to front door. This can perhaps be used to connect a security camera mounted on the outside wall. I am sure no one has experience with that.. but I'll take some theories! [link] [comments] |
Using two different networks at the same time Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:21 PM PDT (I have no networking experience)Is it possible to use 2 different Internet networks at the same time eg. have one for downloading stuff and the other for streaming vids ? [link] [comments] |
Gigabit internet tips (for new customers) Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:36 AM PDT Hey I just got gigabit internet and here are a few tips which I wish I knew before or atleast kept in mind to simplify the process.
Once I used just about all of these tips, I'm getting about 500-700 mbps on wifi (Which is decent for an old router, I'll probably upgrade it in awhile) and I can hit the full gigabit when wired. I've read a lot of posts and complaints about people not hitting their speeds, and sometimes its because of their isp or some other random reason, but maybe it could just be for a simple reason (like how mine was with QoS). I hope this helps someone who maybe having some difficulty with their setup. [link] [comments] |
I want Seamless hand offs but buzzwords are making it hard to find what i need Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:34 AM PDT With summer coming up I want to upgrade my home network to give myself better coverage when going from indoor to outdoor. It 'sounds' like i want a mesh, however i guess that is only describing the APs communicating with eachother via wifi? I guess i'm looking for 'seamless handoffs'? I currently have 1 router and 1 AP broadcasting the same SSID, but when i hop from one to the other i get a disconnected for a moment. How can i fix this? I know i need new equipment as neither of my devices integrate in any way, but the terms and buzzwords currently have me at a loss and i don't want to buy a $400 'mesh" if it's not what i need, or worse doesn't' do what i want. Just bought our first home! How the hell do we tell which coax cable is the “live” one Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:31 PM PDT So I go down into the basement and mounted on the wall is a 8 output cable splitter? Thingy. My working assumption is that is where the cable comes into the house, but the cord that did connect to their router doesn't seem to connect to the splitter! I just need to get a little guidance on which cable is the one to connect to my router. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:16 AM PDT Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and a current student of Cybersecurity. I will like to set up a network in my house to practice and understand more about the field, I saw some videos on YouTube about it how to set a network. But like everything they are so many I got overwhelm can someone here have a guide of what I need, it doesn't have nothing fancy. Thanks in advance!!! [link] [comments] |
What’s the best router out right now for $200-$250? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:52 PM PDT So I just picked up an ASUS AC3100 dual band and I don't know much about networking but I picked it up for $192.99 and am wondering what better options are there for that price point? I know the 3200 is worse but what do you guys recommend that's better than the AC3100?9 [link] [comments] |
Internet completely down after hooking up PS4 to router Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:00 PM PDT After hooking up my PS4 via Ethernet, I gamed for about 5 minutes before my internet connection stuttered for a few minutes, then a complete outage followed. Devices aren't working through WiFi or Ethernet. I haven't had any network issues besides this in the past, aside from service outages. I troubleshooted with Verizon and they confirmed my house has service. I restarted the router and did a factory reset on it. Did an ONT reset. Checked for physical damage to all cables. Nothing improved the situation and there are no glaring problems causing the issue. I'm starting to suspect the router somehow got damaged. Is there anyway I fried the router just by hooking up and additional Ethernet connection? If not, any ideas on what the problem could be? I guess I should have a Verizon technician come and look things over. EDIT: I'm able to connect to our network with WiFi devices, but I'm told that the network has no internet access. Using existing phone jacks for Ethernet and pulling cables from outside terminal Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:10 PM PDT Home has 7 phone jacks with CAT5e running to attic and down external wall to outside telephone terminal near my garage. Is it legal to pull those cables through my garage to set up a home network? Can I splice the CAT5e to make an extension to route into an adjacent laundry room if needed? I know how to convert phone jacks into RJ45. I believe(assume) each phone jack is a stand-alone CAT5e cable as I have 7 in my home and 7 cables going into the telephone terminal. Would converting the phone jacks be too much work or should I just run my own cables through the walls myself? [link] [comments] |
I'm seriously hoping someone can help me out here Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:40 PM PDT My Macbook Air 2019 has been having internet connection problems lately. I've spent the entire morning trying to fix it but to no avail. I think it might be a combination of being upstairs, and the quarantined is putting extra pressure on the system. I know its not just the quarantine as friends have been able to use the wifi ok. Mine is to the point websites take minutes to load and streaming/video calling does not work at all. My WiFI says its connected, but my mac still says "Looking for networks..." every few seconds anyway even though it shows as connected. My house is two storeys and the wifi modem thing is downstairs, however, I found out that there is actually an ethernet network port (not sure what they're called) upstairs but is not used/nothing is connected to it. Is there supposed to be something connected to it? Am I supposed to have two modems? The port I am talking about is the one that looks like a powerpoint, but with no switch and just a hexagonal and circle hole for cables. I don't know if its my mac's problem, wifi problem or what but its driving me crazy. Any help would be great appreciated :D [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:48 AM PDT Ok, I'm a total noob, but here's my current network layout: https://imgur.com/a/rTiZ040 Ultimately I have a samba share on the NASbox that I'd like to make visible for my friend in his house. There may be other services down the road, like a CUPS server or something that I also would like to be visible. I'd like to bridge the connections in the most secure way that is practical, so probably a VPN type tunnel or something. (Also, I know I'm not necessarily using the words 'bridge' and 'tunnel' correctly in the networking sense.) I don't want his internet access to come out of my network. I also don't want to give him an excessively complicated thing to setup on his end on his windows laptop. So, instead of making him set up anything more complicated than a windows share, my idea (which I'm open to modifying as you see fit) was to setup a rasperry pi which would automatically connect to my NASbox via a vpn using either DDNS or synology's quick connect service, and then just pretend to be my server, but on his network once he plugs it in via an ethernet cable to his router. This way, I can easily modify the connection settings and do administration by sshing to the raspi after it has connected to my network. I'm just not sure exactly how to make the pieces work, and what the keywords to be googling are. Would this be possible, and/or can someone point me in the right direction, or a better direction? I just need a general outline of the theory, I can dig into the specifics on my own time. Thanks so much for taking the time to help. I also have a managed switch I could hookup if I have to put the synology NAS on it's own VLAN separate from the rest of the office, but that sounded like too much of a PITA at the time so I didn't do that. What are things that I CAN do with a consumer router (Asus, TP-Link) that I can't do with the USG Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT What would I lose by switching to a USG (besides the wireless, of course)? Are there things a typical consumer router can do that the USG cannot? [link] [comments] |
What should I replace my Netgear n600 with? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 07:03 PM PDT Budget is $100 max, I game alot on my PC which the router seems to stay up to speed on just right at 300 down 20 up but on wifi any device is usually 50 down and 20 up even in the same room. I've had the router for 2 years already so idk if that's a issue to it getting slower but that's what the Xfinity guy said might happen overtime. Anyways I've been looking at the TP Link ones with the Netgear Nighthawk Models but idk which is best overall. I don't need any crazy additions to the router since I'm the only one on the network :P I seem to be stuck with these models but any other recommendations are nice! I know Nighthawks are advertised as gaming routers in a way so that one kind of catches my eye xD but I'm pretty sure it's pure advertising most of the time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:51 PM PDT Hi guys, Looking to upgrade from the Netcomm NF10W to the more future proof feature set of the ASUS RT-AX88U. I'm just wondering if I will be able to simply replace the Netcomm NF10W and plug all the same cables that went into that into the Netcomm NF10W? There is the WAN cable and a few ethernet cables that go to home phones etc. We are on an NBN connection (Australia). Would really appreciate the help! [link] [comments] |
Need advice on modernizing home WiFi for Gigabit Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:21 PM PDT I have recently ditched Comcast 100 Mbps service and upgraded to AT&T Gigabit fiber. My current home network is not really up to the task and never has been great since I moved into this house about five years ago. I'm hoping to get some suggestions on an optimal setup along with equipment ideas. I've included links to my floor plan: This house is an old ranch style home. The basement buildout is fairly new however. I have an Arris BGW210 provided by AT&T at one end of the house on the main level. The room it is in is directly above an unfinished storage area in the basement, a portion of which is completely encased in cinder blocks (weird I know). I have run CAT5 from the Arris into my office in the basement that is on that same side of the house (though closer to the center). This CAT5 runs into a Netgear R6400. I have the following equipment hardwired via 8 port TP-Link switch:
In the basement, I have the following devices connected via WiFi:
On the main level, I have the following devices connected via WiFi:
Prior to moving to Gigabit, I have the router setup for a 2.5Ghz network and a 5Ghz network. Good coverage in the basement but fairly poor and inconsistent upstairs along with frequent drops. Once I installed Gigabit and the Arris, I've experimented with the following setups:
I have tested my speed at the Arris and am consistently seeing 950+ Mbps so I feel pretty confident in the speed coming into my house. Here's what I am seeing speedwise throughout the house:
I'd be happy with 100+ Mbps in those spots far from the router but I'm nowhere near that. I'm trying to figure out my best setup to resolve all this. I've set myself a budget of about $500 and probably won't be able to do much Ethernet in the rest of the house. I'm wondering about the following setups:
I'm intrigued by the UDM as I suspect it will be more reliable and I'm generally technical enough to take advantage of many of its features. Love to get input on how I should be thinking about this. Or maybe I'm overthinking this. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:19 PM PDT Hello, So I've been trying to read this sub and see if I can answer this question on my own but I find myself getting real confused, real fast, so I figured I would give up and ask for help. I'm trying to figure out how best to set up a home network in my new ~1500 sqft apartment and have consistent wifi connection over the 3 floors (2nd floor, 3rd floor, and roof). I really only want to hard wire the TV in the living room and possibly my workstation if I end up continuing to work from home during this crisis. Other than that it will mainly be phones and my girlfriend's laptop. My service is yet to be determined. It's either going to be FIOS or a small start-up ISP in my area that uses an antenna from a central tower (not entirely sold on this yet but it's cheap and has good reviews). I'm wondering the best router/AP set up for my situation. From perusing this sub, I see that the ubiquit routers and APs are well reviewed but I'm trying to figure out what exactly I'd have to buy. Looks like the ER-X and then APs, but how many is required? One per floor? Also, potentially interested in a mesh wifi network if that would be preferable. I'm sorry to sound inexperienced, but I am, and I just want to do this right. I appreciate any help in advance! [link] [comments] |

Extend Wi-fi range through floor? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:08 PM PDT Hey! I'm sure this has been asked before 1000 times, but I live in a basement suite and the Wi-Fi is very fast, but only if I am in the room directly below the router. In my room, it is terribly slow and has packet loss/bad lag/ping, if it even connects. Our home internet speed is 600mbps, and typically I can get 450 if I am near the wi-fi router. In my bedroom it is around 50mbps. I have a cheap D-link range extender (DAP1530) but the thing is really slow, and disconnects half the time. It doesn't work very well, even with a good signal to it from the router. Should I get a similar device, but a more expensive version that may work better? My computer/xbox are in the room that's on the opposite side of the house from the router, and I am looking to extend the signal. I have been looking at this as well, which uses the home electrical wiring? Do these work well? https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/d-link-d-link-powerline-av2-1000-gigabit-adapter-dhp-601av-dhp-601av/10298609 Now is this something that would solve my issue? Looking for some Router and Modem Advice. Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:34 PM PDT I'm paying my ISP Xfinity for Download Speeds up to 500 mbps. When I run a speed test i'm seeing 85-95 Mbps. I live in a 1300 Sq ft home with about 10-12 devices connected. My current setup is: Router: TP Link Archer C50 V1 (End of Life) https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-c50/v1/ Modem: Surfboard SB6141 https://www.arris.com/surfboard/products/cable-modems/sb6141/ Possible future setup: Router: Netgear AC1900-Nighthawk https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R7000.aspx Modem: NetGear CM1000 DOCSIS 3.1 https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/cable-modems-routers/cm1000.aspx What do you guys think? Should I update both my modem and router? [link] [comments] |
port mirroring on managed switch Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:33 PM PDT I have a Zyxel GS1900 managed switch at the core of our home LAN. TBH, never used the managed functions before (bought it because it was cheap one year) but I am considering trying the "port mirroring" now. Also I inherited an old QNAP NAS with 4x LAN ports so I should learn more to try bonding connection too! So let's say this is the current scenario:
If I plug into port 10 a Linux box with NTOPng or PRTG on it, I can see all traffic to/from the internet < -- > LAN? The use case is need to monitor the kids' whereabouts and I was wondering if this was easier than trying to setup a pfsense box, especially if the only thing I want to accomplish is to make sure the kids are not going somewhere inappropriate by having the visibility? FWIW, it was easier decades ago when I had to identify toptalkers at work using a 10-BaseT "hub" - I feel old just typing that but it was easy back then because our company couldn't afford a switch. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Xfinity Extreme Pro 600 mbps - Can I use a Motorola MB7621 to get the most of it? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:28 PM PDT Hi, I have the above internet plan but found out recently that my Arris SB6141 can only provide up to ~270 Mbps. I want to get a reasonably priced modem to get the most out of my internet. I am seeing SO many mixed sources about the max speed of the Motorola that I dont know what to believe. It says it has a max download speed of 1000 Mbps but then Amazon says it can work for plans up to 650 while the website itself refers to Xfinity's "New" 400 Mbps plans lol. Its driving me crazy. I am avoiding Arris like the plague after finding out about the Puma Chipset problem. This Motorola also has a 2 year warranty and a far better rep so...yea. Any help is welcome. [link] [comments] |
How to work around ISP-installed router? Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:23 PM PDT My ISP had an installer come to my apartment and put in a modem-router in one box. It looks like my connection from the ISP is fiber because there's a fiber cable plugged into it. The internet works and the built in router provides wifi and even a little ethernet switch. But I am not allowed access to manage the device (which is in my own home ...). Basically I have to call them if I want the wifi password changed. Does anybody know if I would run into issues to bypass my ISP's equipment if I get a fiber to ethernet converter and used my own router? I would then plug an ethernet cable from this fiber to ethernet converter to the WAN port on my router. My public IP subnet is /24, so I suspect it will be easy to configure my own interface. I'd storage my ISP's equipment until I move out. Any help appreciated. [link] [comments] |
ethernet wall ports not working Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:35 PM PDT Hey guys, I had to move back in with my parents for quarantine and I'm trying to setup their internet for them so we can all work from home without interruptions. I think I got it mostly done smoothly, except the only ethernet port that works is in my improvised office upstairs and my mothers improvised office downstairs ethernet port is not working. She needs this ethernet port to work so she can teach from home smoothly. (the last image is some loose adapter i found in the box not connected to anything) unfortunately I dont really understand what I am looking at with the internal wiring, what do yall reccomend to get multiple ethernet ports set up? Should I buy some sort of multi port adapter for the blue cables? [link] [comments] |
TP link adpater stops working intermittently Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:11 PM PDT A few months ago I purchased 4 tp-link powerline adapters (TL-PA4010). Since then, their performance has been flawless. However, a few days ago all of them started randomly disconnecting from the network (not neccessarily at the same time), usually coming back after being plugged into another outlet and recognizing the net again. It happens a few times a day, and it is very frusturating. Is this a known issue? Could it be a wiring problem in my home? Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:35 PM PDT I don't know if this is the perfect subreddit for this type of question but I can't make up my mind which router to buy. I'm in between the TP-Link C4000, Asus RT-AX3000 and Netgear RAX45. I currently have the Nighthawk R8000 but it's dropping connections and restarting every day now. I thought it would be a software issue so I flash it to DD-WRT but it's still happening, leading me to believe that it's a hardware issue. I've heard of bad software with the Netgear but I'm open to anything under $200. There would be multiple 4K streams and only one wired connection. Range would be important as currently the R8000 has no issues reaching my basement. [link] [comments] |
