Can you get a virus from just opening a mail?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:47 PM PDT

    Hello

I recieved a clear fake mail from paypal. Not sure what the intent of the mail was. I accidentally pressed on it (opened it) when trying to report it.

I was using the outlook web app (outlook.com) on a PC.

The mail contained of a short sentence urging me to open the attachment in the mail, that was all the text in the mail. The attachment was a .docx I saw when hovering the mouse over it.

I never pressed anything in the mail and went back to the inbox and reported the mail.

But can I have gotten a virus just from opening that mail in the outlook web app (outlook.com) on a PC?

P.S. If any danger, what should I do? Reset to windows factory settings? I'd rather not do that since I have no backup on the computer.

I have run two antivirus scans. Avast scan and Malwarebytes scan without them finding anything harmful.

Can you help a worried person? :)

    Internet Issues

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 10:09 AM PDT

This issue happens multiple times per day. My MacBook will still be connected to the wifi but the internet will stop working while the wifi is still up and running on my other devices. To fix it, I will simply turn the wifi off on my MacBook and turn it back on and it begins working again. It may seem like a small issue but when it happens multiple times per day every day it can be very frustrating. Does anyone know of a fix to this problem?

Wifi disconnects me and doesn't let me reconnect (also vanishes from list of networks sometimes?)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 09:04 AM PDT

(note: i have already posted this on r/techsupport but its been 2 (or was it 6 im not sure reddit told me 6 earlier) hours and no response so i figured i would try here, i don't know if this is something any of you can help with but if you can it would be much appreiated)

So, recently i have been having problems with my wifi. Within the last fortnight or so my wifi has started disconnecting me and then also is "unable to connect" when i try to reconnect to it. I would like to note that i don't think its my wifi dongle at fault, as to test i have also started using a tp link, which experiences the same issue, although i do tend to be able to reconnect with more success on the tp link than when using my wifi dongle (although i don't know if that means anything). Sometimes the wifi disconnects me, doesn't allow me to connect and then disappears from the list of detected networks. I don't think its related to signal because i supposedly have a good signal. One curious thing to note which is mostly why i find it so annoying is that i seem to have the issue most frequently out of those within my household with my brother experiencing no issues despite being in the room next to me. My dad is basically the only one who seems to have had similar problems so i suppose that rules out it being my pc specifically (the problem also occurs on my phone). If this isn't enough information i will try to provide with more, but please note that i'm not super well versed in computers. (i have an incredibly basic understanding, mostly because i'm below the age of 70 and have used computers before)

Here are the solutions i have already tried:

    Updating my dongles driver

uninstalling and reinstalling the dongles driver

Resetting the router (which seemed to initially fix it, but the problem quickly arose again afterwards within the same day)

I've run these commands: netsh winsock reset, netsh int ip reset, ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew, ipconfig/flushdns

    resetting network settings

forgetting the network and trying to connect

changing power management settings so my pc cant turn off the dongle to save power

    resetting wifi autoconfig

I have also tried using the windows network troubleshooter (i'm on windows 10 if that's important) to no avail, as it can't find any problems.

Basically i don't what i can do, if anything to fix this but i assume its not my pc specifically as both a laptop and a phone have experienced the same issue while other people in the house don't.

If you can, i would appreciate the help, thanks! (as i said earlier, if you need more information then i will try my best to provide and sorry if this post doesn't make sense)

Edit: as of right now my dongle isn't detecting my network but is detecting others, whilst my tp link IS detecting it but tbh that could probably change i'll update if necessary

edit 2: the dongle is now detecting my network again

Need help retrieving files from my WD Passport External HDD

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:16 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a 2TB WD My Passport External HDD (relatively new) that recently started malfunctioning. I can access (see) the files on the drive, but whenever I try to copy them onto my computer, it copies about 30-40 megabytes and then stops for some reason. There's about 40GB of video footage that I need to recover from this glitchy drive and am desperately in need of help to retrieve it. Any ideas would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I'm running MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 on a 13 inch 2018 MacBook Pro. Please help!
