New YouTube UI is starting to roll out: Comments section now collapsed below the description. Posted: 28 Apr 2020 08:38 AM PDT It was in A/B Testing for a while, but now it seems to have widely rolled out if you check r/Youtube They moved the comments section to just below the description. It's collapsed by the way, so you have to press that tiny space to open up the comments. I don't mind it much, but the recommended videos thumbnails are so huge now, only about two videos fit in a single screen. [link] [comments]

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:24 AM PDT A while back there was a lot of commotion over the RCS and Google enabling it. While Google taking control was a good idea, I was wondering what is the RCS status today and what is its popularity? The RCS capability is still not available worldwide and it still doesn't support end-to-end encryption which these days is a given for messaging apps like Whatsapp or Viber. Is there a good chance that RCS can compete with apps like Whatsapp, Viber, Telegram, or even Signal, which have great popularity, especially outside the US? There is the risk that RCS simply becomes a "upgraded SMS app" that is rarely used, but is there for the few times that you need it. Again: no end-to-end encryption, video/voice call integration is going to hamper adoption in my view. What is its future? And what needs to be done? [link] [comments]

Nubia Red Magic 5G is a complete flop so far.. Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:26 PM PDT This is going to be a long review, so grab a coffee and prepare for a read My daily driver was an ASUS ROG Phone, and everyone knows the support from ASUS on that phone is horrible, ASUS took forever to fix bugs, there's basically no support from them, and the phone JUST recently got Android 9 when Android 10 was already released for awhile. So the bar for me was really low that the Red Magic 5G had to beat.. and it didn't.. First lets look at the good, it's cheap, blazing fast specs, has a fan built in for cooling, RGB because why not, insane 64mp camera, three lens system, 144hz display, and is in direct competition with bleeding edge smart phones.. now.. lets actually look into these specs, because on paper, it looks like a power house of a phone. Lets address the fan and RGB, yes, it has both, they work very well, however, they ONLY work when the gaming mode switch is activated, you CAN NOT use them for normal operation or using games that are not supported with their game launcher, which can only be toggled by using the dedicated switch at the top, so, this kind of sucks with all of the advertising on these features, only for them to be features of a feature and not actual functions of the phone for daily use. The RGB can be used in the standard mode, but only as notifications for notifications, calls, or charging. Next comes the language barrier with translation, when I was in the dedicated game mode, I got stuck, unable to return back to the main launcher because every time I hit the "back" button, it kept telling me to turn off the compete button, what is the compete button? turns out it was the SWITCH that enters the game launcher, but the poor translation doesn't stop there, if you look through settings, all of the screenshots of examples for settings are still in Chinese, they didn't make new English screenshots for what the settings do. Which is also where the first start up immediately had issues when the phone turned on for the first time and said something in Chinese, and then switched to English on it's own, no idea what it said on first boot up. When you're setting up the phone, it's a weird choice on their part that during the setup process, you have the OPTION to use finger print reader, however I did was to set it up, and it's alright, washed tried hands, best possible outcome, and it still takes 1 or two tries before it finally works, but when it works, it's extremely fast, so this can probably be fixed with a software update, or it's a result of the preapplied screen protector, more on that later, but sticking with the security options, you CAN NOT skip setting a pin code for unlock, it also doesn't give you any other options even though in settings once the phone is setup, you can change it to a password or pattern later, but it's just really weird that you MUST set a pin code before you can complete the setup, only to change it in settings once you're actually setup and using the device, it also does NOT have face unlock which is weird to see on a phone of 2020, just leading back to the dated feel of this phone requiring only physically touching to unlock. Onto the screen protector, mine, right out of the box, was already peeling up on the top left corner and just pressing down a bit didn't help, it stuck down a bit more, but then peeled right back up again after normal use, so I can already see this peeling right off in my pocket after a few days use, which brings us to the quality of the screen protector, but before we address this, I just want to point out the phone is EXTREMELY slippery, just having the phone sit on my matte wooden surface desk, the weight of the charging cable hanging off my desk was enough to almost pull the phone straight down on the floor, I figured I would lay it down on the screen until I get a case with some grip so this doesn't happen, and sure enough, it tried to slide away again, and now we're back at the quality of my now scratched screen protector, they're not deep scratches, but definitely noticeable if light reflects off the front and immediately makes the phone seem used when it's been out of the box for roughly 20 minutes, now obviously a better screen protector, or a compatible glass one that works with the in display fingerprint reader would be a great upgrade, and for the price of the phone, at least they included one, just be prepared that this screen protector is as good as the protective film that's intended to only protect the screen in the box and is suppose to be removed before use. Now when you set up the phone, everything is HUGE, it's fully 55+ centre mode, it feels like it's in a "poor visibility mode" for people who have trouble seeing, so when I tapped on "vision settings" the screen just flashes, because there are no vision settings, it just has the button because that's the stock android setup screen, but the phone doesn't physically have them written. The only adjustment of size you have once the phone is set up and you can actually get into all of the settings is changing the font size, but it only changed the font for "normal text", the system integrated stuff like clock in notifications, the pull down toggles, keyboard font, and status bar size stays the same, which just completely throws off the entire view of the phone with giant and small font mixed all over the phone at random. The drop down toggles have scrolling text by default which is a STRONG reminder of Android 4 when that was the standard and gives the phone an extremely outdated feel, and not in a nostalgic way, you can also not turn this off, however in the settings, there are some options where the toggles don't have scrolling text, and instead of allowing it to drop down a line to finish, it just cuts it off, so if anyone knows what "toggle h.." means, let me know. The dated aspects of this phone also don't stop at the toggles, the haptic feedback feels like the old Nexus 4/5 where the vibration almost feels like it's echoing in the phone, like the motor is on too long and even trying to adjust them in GBoard settings didn't restore much faith, I was able to shorten the duration, but it still just "feels cheap", now I'm not going to fault the phone for this because of it's price tag reflecting this, but it's just something to note and for the best experience, I had to turn haptic off completely, it's also really loud and during my first use of the phone today I was asked "is that noise coming from your phone?" and to avoid any further social anxiety, I turned haptic off lol Lastly, I saved the worst for the end, the camera, it claims a 64mp camera, however in my testing, the default mode is 16mp, which I found really weird when they advertise so heavily on this 64mp 8k camera, turns out it's just super resolution post processing through software, Because I can take identical shots in 64mp mode, and 16mp mode, put the 16mp mode in Photoshop and just scale up the resolution, and they're identical side by side (I'm working on a video to demonstrate this in more detail), the wide angle is extremely poor, however, it's about at part with the ROG Phone, so I didn't gain anything, and the macro camera, is purely a joke, it honestly shouldn't have even been included unless you like photo's from your Motorola flip phone from 15 years ago. It does have this "super crazy" 1920fps slow motion, during my first test video, it has frame skipping, it's super slow for a bit and then jumps a bunch of frames and then back to slow motion, I didn't try any of the other modes yet, but from that test, it's not even worth using if it ends up frame skipping over the critical moment you wanted to catch in slow motion. As for the 8K resolution, this means nothing, it's not clear, it's not crisp, it's just a normal everyday cell phone video that's up scaled to 8k resolution, because the 1080p video quality looks identical. Which brings us to the stability, don't use it, the stability on makes the video blurry and unwatchable, where as using it with stability off, it remains clear enough that you can actually see what's going on despite a few shakes here and there. There's probably more I'm forgetting to mention but I am just so underwhelmed by this phone, Yes it was a cheap phone, but I've tested a OnePlus 7T Pro which you can get used for around the same price, and everything about that phone, puts this one to shame. I'm going to give this phone some time to get some software updates in hope that Nubia actually fixes these issues, but if nothing happens soon, I'm getting rid of it and getting another OnePlus 7T Pro because I just feel like I bought a phone and was lied to about what it actually was, so much advertising on these "great features" that are not even what they are, the camera specs are software, the RGB and fan are for their proprietary gaming mode ONLY, they're very dated layout and functions, the software is extremely poor and needs a LOT of work, it's missing tons of standard features like the device setup actually working, adjustable dpi, face unlock, modern feeling haptic, and these are standard features from phones of 2+ years ago, this isn't Nubia's first phone, you would think they learned a few things along the way but it turns out this isn't the case and I just don't have faith from my first impressions that this is going to get any better. For closing notes, I'm still using my ASUS ROG Phone as it matches every spec of this phone from a daily usability, but has adjustable DPI scaling, face unlock, constant RGB in any mode I want, a modern feel for layout and haptic, dual front facing speakers, and the camera performs just as good as the Red Magic 5G, which unfortunately says a lot considering I don't like the ROG Phone and it's running Android 9, yet somehow feels more up to date than the Red Magic 5G on Android 10. Hopefully they fix all of this with a software update soon because nearly all of this is software related and could be easily fixed if their engineering department actually takes note of common functions that are missing, but as the phone currently sits right now, I do not recommend anyone to buy this phone, you will not get your money's worth, buy an ASUS ROG Phone 1 if you want something gaming inspired, or a OnePlus 7T Pro if you want the best camera and software feel, both can be found used for less than this costs and are far better phones when it comes to a daily driver. EDIT:Just want to add that Nubia is also really indecisive with this phone as well, when it was announced, they suggested "black" and "transparent", which when pre-orders were announced, they changed "black" to "Hacker Black", introduced a new colour for it called "Mars Red", and "Transparent was changed to "Cyber Neon", all awesome names, when they phone was actually shipping, they changed them again from "Hacker Black" to "Eclipse Black", "Mars Red" to "Hot Rod Red", and "Cyber Neon" to "Pulse", less cool names. this is just something worth mentioning that if they can't decide on a name for the colours, how decisive are they going to be for software updates, what features stay, what gets added, every update they could add more or remove more features, just kind of a red flag for me after experiencing the software and I felt like it's worth noting. EDIT 2: EDIT 3: EDIT 4: The in screen finger print reader doesn't work, it's as if it's forgetting, I can pair my finger print, it will work a couple of times, and after unlocking the phone maybe three to 5 times it starts having issues and then eventually will not work again and I have to add it again, I have my finger print paired 6 times now.. screen is clean, washed and dried hands, best possible outcome and it still fails after a few uses. EDIT 5: I made a video showing some of the issues, didn't go into much detail but you'll get the point. I was trying to make it quick bit there was so much wrong with the phone it ended up taking a lot longer than I expected to cover the issues. EDIT 6: The finger print sensor will not work at all now, I can't even pair my finger print now, I tried deleting them all starting over but even with nothing paired, it says "this finger is already paired" or whatever, tried restarting, and now it tells me to make sure the screen is clean or something along those lines, so, finger print reader has stopped working completely. Next is YouTube, tried opening a video to get a sound test, sounds fantastic by the way, amazing speakers, the phone also decided they were great because once I started playing a video, it completely locks up the screen from working and I can't pause the video or anything, I had to turn it off and back on again and when I tried to repeat it on camera it wouldn't do it, I got a couple unresponsive taps but nothing concrete of the issue.
