    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1600 CAD maximum, Canada
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I think an ultrabook would be good, I want it to be portable and for the battery to last throughout the day.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It doesn't have to be the smallest, sleekest model, but I don't want it to be chunky. So something on the smaller side.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Can run photoshop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
League of legends and CSGO at 60+fps, high settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Good display, keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Overall something that would last throughout my entire time in university (4 years), without having to upgrade.

Laptop that can run intensive mapping software for postgrad research (Australia, $1500 AU, medium-large screen)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:23 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am in Australia and looking for a laptop (not desktop!) that can run ArcGIS Pro - specs required.

I would prefer a larger screen size (no specific requirements there), and would like to buy a used/refurbished laptop that will survive my two year masters degree.

My budget is maybe $1500 give or take, but I am hoping for the cheapest option that can run this software without crashing. I'd ideally spend a LOT less than that as I'm a poor, self-supporting student, but I can pay whatever is required.

A touch-screen would be great, for writing notes on lecture slides. But this is in no way a requirement, and I wouldn't be willing to pay much extra for it.

    Thank you!

Looking for a good reliable laptop for university!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 08:18 AM PDT

Hi. So I'm starting university this fall and am in need of a laptop that's reliable, good for studying and would be good at running Minecraft. I don't need a beast that can run the Witcher 3 on max settings tho. I know almost nothing about computers and I don't have a set budget yet, I have no idea how much can a laptop cost. Also I don't know how hard drives work in the sense that I don't know if they can be replaced and changed etc, but 500+GB would be nice. I've heard that SSD is better, but I don't know if laptops have them.

If you do stumble across this post and are so kind as to leave your suggestion I'd be very thankful.

P.S. I'm not looking for apple products.

Need basic laptop to do some photoshop for school

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:27 PM PDT

Hi. I'm not too familiar with the differences in laptops and I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could help me out. It would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for a computer that can run photoshop without freezing and chrome in the background. I'll also be using it as my daily laptop.

I'm looking to stay as budget as possible. I don't mind using something older, refurbished, etc. If that will work.

Also, I think I'll need a drawing tablet. Again, I don't need the best one, I just need it to do the basics so I can get through school.

    Thanks for your help!

    Laptop for CSE Major

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:48 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I will be a freshman majoring in computer engineering this year, and I need a new laptop.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
~$1500 USD (This will include tax and potential warranty)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Open, but my previous pc's have all been used and I would prefer getting a new one this time.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Do not want a chunky laptop. Ideally all aluminum, no plastic shells. Will need decent pc performance (no i3's 4gb ram lol). Enough battery to make it through a school day without endlessly charging.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thin is important, but weight not so much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Potential CAD, but I shouldn't need anything crazy. Probably more on the CPU intensive side with MATLAB and programming software.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Indie games like rimworld. Gaming is no priority of mine.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Mostly metal build quality? Standard keyboard is fine. Could care less for touchscreen or convertible. Really haven't had a premium laptop so anything super nice is just a bonus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've always eyed the xps 13, having used inspirons my whole life. Although with the newest models, it can be hard to differentiate the pros and cons of 2019 and 2020 versions. I was looking at this: https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-laptops/new-xps-13-laptop/spd/xps-13-9300-laptop/xn9300cto220s but maybe there is another option? Maybe instead of a low end xps I shoot for a high end inspiron? an older gen xps?

    Any help is appreciated!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £500 UK
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? performance > battery life > build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lightweight if possible but not vital
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" minimum
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. VLC, Microsoft Office, Movie Magic Budgeting, Movie Magic Scheduling
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 720p / HD webcam, reliable build quality, upgradability, SSD Primary drive, backlit keyboard, Bluetooth, Anti-glare screen
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a Production Assistant / Runner in TV & Film, so the laptop will be used for paperwork, excel spreadsheets, watching videos & video conferencing. This purchase is hopefully going to be funded via a Screenskills bursary but I have to supply a quote first then 4-6 weeks processing time before I'll know. I have to explain my reasoning for the choice as well. The only one I found that ticked all the boxes was the Lenovo V330-14ARR

Lenovo Y540, HP Omen 15, or Dell G5?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:58 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm buying a new gaming laptop, but I need help deciding which one to buy, I have 3 Choices:

    1- Lenovo Legion Y540 (i7, Nvidia RTX 2060)

    2- DELL G5 15-5590 (i7, Nvidia RTX 2060)

    3-HP OMEN 15 (i7, Nvidia RTX 2060)

The three of them seem pretty similar, but what I really care about is gaming performance and temperatures.

Where I live it's usually 30C+ degrees , so overheating is a problem.

Also I have had a dell XPS 15 since 2012 and the Nvidia card in it never worked (Shuts down the whole PC when used) so I'm kinda worried this may happen again with Dell.

And I heard the HP Omen can get really hot to the point where people can't touch the keyboard which is concerning.

    Any information is much appreciated.

    Thanks.

I have a 2012 i7 Macbook Pro with a broken logic board. I could get a new board for about $200, an entire 2012 i5 Macbook Pro for about the same, or possibly a 2013-2015 Macbook Pro for about $350. OR what are non Mac options in that price range? (more details inside)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:39 PM PDT

Ok, so I'm thinking of just replacing the logic board, but I don't trust the 2012 boards because they're known to have the issue that I have right now - which is basically works for a little bit then shuts down.....then it might work a day later, but will eventually shut down on its own again. So I'm thinking of maybe just getting a whole 2012 i5 Macbook Pro and switching over the RAM and HDD from my i7 into the i5. Either solution runs about $200. One reason I'm even thinking of getting something 8yrs old is because it's the last Mac laptop to not have RAM soldered into the board and not have the battery glued in place.

OR I could wait for a deal on a 2013-2015 Macbook Pro for about $300-350. It's not super common, but I see them often enough that I could most likely snag one for around that price. The only issue here is that they all run on proprietary SSDs, which are expensive (like $150 for 500gb is a good deal). Plus I read they have proprietary "pentagonal" screws, so I'd need to buy a screwdriver specifically for it, which is annoying. So I'd probably be spending closer to $500 since they usually come with 128-256gb SSDs and that's just too small.

OR I could of course get a non-Macbook Pro. However everything I see in the under $400 price range just doesn't seem that great. And non-Mac laptops lose their value quicker and I really like the MacOS. I'm interested in Linux, but having a Mac just makes everything easier since I use it for.....

.....everything except gaming, so unlike most of the posts here that's not something to worry about. However I do use it for light video and music editing. As an actor I use it to edit taped auditions and short sketches. For the audio side I use it to edit voiceover work and record bass/guitar/vocals for personal projects and friend's music.

Currently I use a 2009 Macbook (not pro) that I've fully upgraded to 8gb RAM and can have whatever storage size I want pretty much, and it's totally fine. It doesn't feel slow or anything. I AM, however, currently sitting at MacOS Sierra version 10.12.6 because I've heard upgrading to Catalina (is that the most recent?) messes some things up and/or makes some things not compatible for older Macs. I have no issues right now, but I know some software I use might eventually be incompatible with my Mac, so that's the only real reason I want to upgrade to a newer one.

So, with all that in mind, any suggestions that you think would be better than one of the aforementioned Macbook Pros that's less than $400 (after taxes)?

Assistance needed re: two similar priced laptops!

Need advice re: 2 prebuilt laptops

Hello my friends, I was hoping you guys could help me pick which is the better choice for gaming and using solidworks. The games I mostly play are LOL and Call of Duty. Solid works is for creating and rendering designs.

    The PCs are as followed:

    微星GL63 八代I5 8300H四核 8G内存 128G固态+1T硬盘 GTX1060 6G独显 15.6寸 1080P 屏幕 键盘灯 全国联保

    (I5 8300H 4 core, 8gb RAM, 128g ssd + 1tb HDD, GTX1060 6GB, 15.6" screen 1080p)

    Vs

    微星GF63 九代代I7 9750H六核心 8G内存 256G固态硬盘 GTX1650 4G独立显卡 15.6寸 IPS屏幕 红色键盘灯 全国联保

    (I7 9750H 6 core, 8gb RAM, 256gb SSD, GTX1650 4GB, 15.6" screen)

The latter choice is about $40 more expensive.

    Thanks for the help!

$1250 US -- Light Laptop With Premium Materials That'll Last For Years

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:27 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1250 USD, a bit flexible. US purchase.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurb is fine if it's mint quality.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Regular clamshell laptop. Build quality should be top notch (at least as good as my current MacBook Air). Should have good battery life too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lightness is a must. Ideally no more than 3 pounds

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13 to 14 inches.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photoshop, whatever random Steam game I got laying around. Not expecting it to be a gaming workhorse, already got a PC for that.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Apex Legends for instance should run at medium 60fps 1080p or something, I dunno.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, touchpad should be great, at least somewhat close to a MacBook's. IPS screen is also a must. Top build quality is a must, however touchscreen, fingerprint readers, drives and IO ports aren't very important. If possible, 16GB RAM as well.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I love my MacBook Air, but it is 5 years old with a TN screen, a crappy dual-core i5 and 4 GB of RAM. It's been choking a lot recently. I was eyeing the upcoming MacBook Pro, but with the uncertainty regarding Apple's transition to ARM I figured I might as well jump ship before I get a computer that's rendered obsolete in like two years.

    Help picking a new laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:37 AM PDT

Hi Reddit, I'm not very computer savvy and I have to very quickly get a laptop and I've narrowed it down to 2.

    The Acer Nitro 5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C715KNT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A133XRPP18G6HD&psc=1

    And the Dell G3 15: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9J1PY6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A30EPR1Q8JVZG5&psc=1

I'd like any input on either computer or if you have a better suggestion for one.

In theory I wanted a gaming laptop around $800 and my budget is pretty tight, the 2 games I'd like to play would be the sims4 & Skyrim (single player games with pretty graphics).

    Thanks guys

Looking for a Multipurpose Laptop (Student/Gaming USA $800-$1400)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Budget is somewhat flexible, but I would like to stay under $1400 if possible.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes if from a reliable source.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I am a student so would like it to have decent battery life. As long as it's not going to fall apart I don't care too much about build quality. Performance is pretty important. Form factor is not important to me.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I prefer a 15 inch screen.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Computer engineering/computer science student who likes to game a little. Common programs include VS Code, Civ 5, Virtual Box, PSPice, and lots of Chrome tabs.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Somewhat into gaming, but don't care about quality much. Maybe at least medium settings and 30 FPS. Usually games like Civ 5, PUBG, CSGO and Path of Exile.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Wouldn't use touch screen, but something like Windows Hello or a finger-print reader would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Coming from a Dell Inspiron 5577. I loved all the I/O ports(3 USB Type A, Full-Size HDMI, Ethernet) and definitely would like to priortize flexibility in that sense. Would like at least an SSD, HDD, and 16 GB of RAM, but if I have to upgrade it myself for any of those, that's cool too. Just either want them included or the option to upgrade.

Laptop for basic work + emulation [$500-$800 USD]

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:05 PM PDT

Apologies for the formatting - I'm on mobile. Hence why I need a laptop.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $500-$800; United States

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Sure

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Should be comfortable. Don't want a touch screen. Battery life is a plus, but this will be for home use. I don't want something that feels cheap.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Won't be traveling with it much, especially now. But I don't want anything too big and clunky.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some gaming. No major MMOs or anything.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to be able to emulate up through Gen 6. Medium settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like a decent webcam. Solid keyboard is a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had crappy $200 student laptops my whole life. I'd like something a little nicer. $500-$800 is where I'd like to be, budget wise. I can afford to go higher if it's worth it, but I'm not looking for anything too premium.

Dell G3 a good budget gaming choice?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:54 PM PDT

I'm planning on getting a new laptop to replace my very old one that died recently. I want something for light to mid gaming (probably XCOM 2, BF4, and some older games) and casual use that I can take to college when I start that in the fall.

I've seen several different models recommended but the one I've looked at most strongly is the Dell G3 3590. The one I was looking at is the model with the following specs:

    -Dell G3 15 3590 laptop

    -9th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-9300 core

    -Windows 10 64-bit English

    -NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 4GB GDDR

    -8GB 2x4GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM

-128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Boot) + 1TB 5400 rpm 2.5" SATA Hard Drive (Storage)

After speaking to a Dell sales rep, the quote I received was about $700 before tax.

Would this be a good choice for what I'm looking for? I've heard about a few downsides to these Dells. I'm not to worried about the lower quality screen in them but am concerned about overheating/cooling problems. If this is not a good buy, what are some better options in a similar price range?

Suggest a refurbished business class laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:52 PM PDT

    Hello guys

I hope you can help me out picking a refurbished business class laptop in the jungle that is used laptops :)

( To be noted, I currently have a Thinkpad X220 and have been quite happy about it. It is swift and quite reliable. The only things I do not like about it is the noise and the heating and also a bug in the HDD 2-3 times a year which causes a failure in startup... So that is my convern with any future Thinkpads)

What will I be using the laptop for?

    1. Everyday use such as internet, streaming, watching videos, listening to music etc.
    2. Light website editing via Wordpress
    3. Light gaming such as CS:GO and various strategy games.
    4. Writing writing and more writing ( articles, blogs etc.)

I have basically more or less narrowed it down to these 5 options but am obviously open to other ideas aswell**. These 5 options are simply a guideline as to what I am looking towards:**

    1. Dell E7470: Intel Core i5, 2.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 14" 1366 x 768 pixel, Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, Bluetooth, Webcam, Grade C
    2. Thinkpad x260: Intel Core i7, 2.81 GHz, 16 GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 12.5" 1366 x 768 pixel, Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, Bluetooth, Webcam, Grade C
    3. Dell E5470: Intel Core i5, 2.4 GHz, 16 GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 14" 1366 x 768 pixel, Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, Webcam, Grade A
    4. HP Elitebook 820 G3: Intel Core i5, 2.4 GHz, 8 GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 12.5" 1366 x 768 pixel, Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, Bluetooth, Webcam, Grade C
    5. Dell E5270: Intel Core i5, 2.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 12.5" 1366 x 768 pixel, Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, Bluetooth, Webcam, Grade A

Have in mind that the price of each of these 5 machines are more or less the same ( around 500 USD)

The various grades from A to C indicate the shape of the used machine. It is of minor importance to me, so you guys can take it into consideration in case it can tip the scale in favor of one over another.

If any of you are experts on refurbished business laptops, please share your opinion. Also, if you have other suggestions.

Also if any of you have any experience with each of these, let me know.

Thank you in advance! All help is recieved and much obliged :)

Looking for a gaming laptop recommendation in the 1000-1200 range - USA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Edit: Walmart actually just reached out to me with tracking info showing that it was shipped (yet somehow it's simultaneously backordered AND they're still verifying my payment?), so no recommendations needed unless I'm making a horrible mistake.

    Obligatory filled form:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:1000-1200 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?Yes - so long as it comes with a warranty. I am in the IT world by trade, support isn't required, just repair.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Performance 1, Quality 2, Form 3, Battery 4 (I'll always be plugged in or able to be)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?I'll mainly be using it in bed so I don't want a brick sitting on me, but ultimately it's not a dealbreaker.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.17 inch, would work with 15 if it's a good value.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.No CAD or video editing. Some photoshop but I have a desktop for that if needed.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Mostly FFXIV and WoW, some newer FPS games like Overwatch or Fortnite at times. I'd like to be able to play on high to ultra for FFXIV/WoW (Recognize these are mostly CPU limited)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?No specific items.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I originally ordered the EVOO 17 Gaming from Walmart (17" FHD 144Hz, i7-9750H, RTX 2060, 1TB SSD, 16GB Ram) ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/Laptop-FHD-Windows-Black-Intel-Nvidia-Display-i7-9750H-RTX-16GB-Tuned-1TB-10-2060-THX-Memory-Home-144Hz-9th-SSD-EVOO-Gen-Spatial-17-Audio-Gaming/163944363) based on reviews on the web - this felt like the best bang for my buck but walmart has since backordered it and cannot give me an update on when it may actually come back in stock. I'm willing to wait to get something that I can use for 3-4 years or so, but I don't want to wait longer than a month or two.

    Thanks!

Looking for a thin and light under $1100 USA

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 10:43 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1100USD But really trying to stay under 1k.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No thank you.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Portability/build quality are key, secondary would be performance in a bang for buck way.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Semi important, as long as its a 13ish in or smaller.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    above

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

A little bit of offline gaming while traveling. I play older games like KOTOR, Fallout NV, Rome Total War. The most it'd be asked to do is play civ 5 for a while on a long flight.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Fine with low settings at 30+fps. Just want to play without crashing or severe fps drops.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

The more I/O the better. Needs a headphone jack.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am mostly gonna be using the laptop for schoolwork, word/ppt/excel and some school programs for online tests. Secondary would be minor gaming while traveling. I want enough performance that it wouldn't be a headache to play low tier games.

I found these 2 that seem to fit the bill but I'm having a hard time figuring out what their potential gaming performance would be like.

Any and all help is appreciated!
