    New laptop for school

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:28 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I don't really have a budget, because my parents will most likely pay most of it. I think I'l like to put the budget at 1000, but don; t mind going over that a bit.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Absolutely! I am the kind of hipster-guy who "if I can help create less waste, I will do that." has as attitude.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I absolutely love surface-like devices, maybe a bit bigger though. Build quality is important since it will be used for school and therefore will experience a lot of travel. Also I like a keyboard that doesn't really flex when I am typing, however I would take portability over flexibility.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not a whole lot but lighter would always be good.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I will use it for my classes in Computer science(or, as the school calls it: Expert IT and Devices), so anything optimized for coding and server management will do.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
60fps on Apex Legends and CoD Warzone would be perfect, but I'd take with less.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch-screen and 360 degrees would be perfect. Don't mind laptops without trackpad since I will carry a mouse all the time anyways.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
(School requirement standards->)Definitely a newer Core i5 or i7 or more preferably ryzen 5 or 7. 500gb SSD but I am able to upgrade it myself. 16gb RAM, and upgradeability to 32 or 64 would be perfect.

I am hoping to use it as for master study in biostatistics (I wanted to buy it in September, but now I am in quarantine so I am bored without laptop). I will be using this laptop to learn autocad and revit. Eventually will be using it to do some small projects. I don't know much about laptops so a lot of the technical jargon goes over my head although I am trying to learn. Im aware i need a powerful machine for revit and that my budget is small. Open to a bigger budget if there is some sort of pay later type of deal e.g Currys/pc world

Looking for a good gaming laptop at $1500 maximum?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 06:30 AM PDT

I'm looking for a really good laptop specifically for gaming that can play games at ultra settings. Like Red Dead Redemption 2 or GTA V for example. With great FPS and very good/fast performance. I'm thinking maybe Alienware but I'm not sure which one. I don't really care about the weight/thinness. I do care about battery life since I play in my living room a lot, I also preferably would like a big screen. As for specific requirements, I'm not really picky, but I do like the LED keyboards which are neat. I'm willing to spend a bit more than my budget required though if it is worth it.

Looking for a laptop that's got better heating capabilities and is slightly better or much better than my current one. Current one is a Gigabyte Aero 14 GTX 1060 with an i7-6700HQ. Budget max: $2000 including tax and any warranty.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 01:22 AM PDT

TLDR: Max budget is about $2,000USD, give or take some. Preferably not used. Battery not much of an issue as I'll likely have it plugged in most of the time. Lightweight, good cooling most important alongside better GPU and CPU for gaming. 16" max. Games listed below 2nd to last paragraph. Don't care about how good the screen is so long as it's "good enough" for FPS games and the like. Don't plan on watching amazing movies on it or something. No touch screen (waste of cash for my purposes) - would like it to last at least 3 years or so.

Longer: I'm honestly loving this laptop, but it's starting to get old. The keyboard makes me WANT to type on it it feels so nice... It's treated me really well in the time that I've had it, but it's getting to be about 4 years+ old now, and little things are starting to pop up that make its age known.

I use it for both games and work and travel a lot. I'd like it to be able to handle moderately high stress games for CPU with temp controls that can handle it. Today, I played Sea of Thieves for example, and the temps got up to 92C even after underclocking it with Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility, after repasting, and after getting rid of dust and changing the power settings to "balanced" and things like this... When before it wouldn't even go above 75CSeems like this laptop is coming to an end.

Games I most commonly play currently to get a decent idea of power: Sea of Thieves, Battlefront 2, WoW, Warcraft 3, Diablo 3 (I know... I know -_-) I'm waiting for games like Cyberpunk 2077, any future star wars games, potentially CoD? (unsure)

Ideally lightweight for travel, not above 16" (if possible), and just good at keeping temps down honestly... I dun wanna freak out about it getting to 90C+ while I play Battlefront 2. I know this is hard to get with a laptop, but... That's my main thing.

USA, $700-900?, Software Developer, For dual boot W10 / Fedora

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 05:01 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      $700-900 USD, Somewhat flexible
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I guess?
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build Quality, Performance, Battery, Form Factor. I don't really care if it's a 2-in-1. My current machine is, never used it like that though. I want something to last a good while, and I'm not always gentle, so build quality is a must. Good preference for an aluminum body.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Meh.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-15.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nope, but I will probably run an IDE or VMs occasionally. IntelliJ, Visual Studio, VirtualBox. I usually use VS Code and Vim, so requirements aren't that heavy.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
As long as I can run Minecraft on medium settings I'm cool.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
MUST be able to dual boot Linux. I specifically care about playing nicely with recent versions of Fedora. This is pretty much requirement 1.

    • I'm upgrading from a Yoga 11e. Everything is a step in the up direction. My current leader for these requirements is a Lenovo S540 14in. Posting here in case the powers of Reddit want to tell me I'm stupid before I spend the money.

    • Additional Notes: Integrated GPUs require additional 2GB of system RAM.

If anyone can provide any insight to what any of that means it would be great. Thanks in advance, guys!

Searching for laptop (<1000) for sound/video editing and digital art (Ireland)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2020 02:50 AM PDT

Searching for a reliable laptop that can handle Ableton Live and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator/Premiere Pro).

Additionally, I would love to take up digital art and be able to use a drawing pad. Was initially planning to get an iPad (for ProCreate app) in addition to laptop but if was possible to buy one device (laptop/drawing pad) that could handle all of the above, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

At least an i7 and long battery life with a great screen quality for movies.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very

At least 14" but not too big, so less than 17"

A little photo editing but not much. Maybe Gimp, Inkscape and Powerpoint.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not into gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Backlit keyboard, bluetooth, HDMI output

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Mostly need this for work which has a some heavy software (Not super heavy) so looking for a good processor and a decent amount of RAM. On my off time, I wanted to use it to watch movies so ideally a QHD screen but I know it's a longshot at $700.
