Ethernet cable running from downstairs to upstairs?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:37 AM PST

I need an ethernet cable run from downstairs into my bedroom (I currently use powerline adapters but they give me slower speeds and more importantly higher ping in games compared to ethernet directly into the router). Moving my setup downstairs is pretty much out of the question, and my router has to be plugged into the phone line socket, which we have one of, downstairs. I need a way that would allow me to run a cable downstairs to upstairs without too much DIY, as my parents probably wouldn't allow me to drill many holes in walls or such. I was just proposing to run a long cable throughout the house when I play tournaments, but it isnt ideal. I was wondering if it's something wrong with my powerline adapters as even 2.4GHz wifi provides lower latency and better ping. There may be a lot of electrical interference near the powerline adapter that I cant particularly reduce by much.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Router recommendations?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 11:49 AM PST

I'm moving into a new apartment, getting gigabit internet speeds, and I'm getting an Arris SB8200 as a modem. The Modem/Router bundle I see skyrockets the price from $170~ to $580~, which I think is probably wrong but also kinda ridiculous. I was wondering what a good router would be with the modem I am getting. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: For reference, I'm going to be using this mostly for my phone and any remote work that I do, but may also do some gaming as well.

    VLAN Trunk not working correctly?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:10 PM PST

Not sure what i'm doing wrong with my configuration.

I have an Edgerouter 4 with a Cisco Catalyst 2960G and I am trying to configure a couple VLANs.

The VLANs appear to be working correctly (VLAN 10 ports 2,3,6,7 VLAN 20 port 20, VLAN 99 port 21, VLAN 80 trunk port 24). I made sure to set allowed VLANs to 1-99 on the trunk but for some reason all ports on default VLAN 1 are no longer getting DHCP from the router and connected devices end up with self-assigned addresses. Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated.

How much would it cost to run cat5e in a two story house for casual use?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:49 PM PST

I am by no means using this for home networking sorry if this is the wrong subreddit.

I have a two story house (not new but not ancient). I want to call someone to route some ethernet stuff to 1-2 rooms in my house as my parents don't care for it.

Do they charge by the hour/room or??

Recommendations for a large home with a basement? About 5000 Sq. Feet

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 02:37 PM PST

I moved in with family and their network overall sucks pretty bad. 1 router trying to feed the house and quite a few dead spots throughout. They are allowing us to live here for free for a few months and I wanted to do something nice and upgrade their connections throughout the house. For reference the current router is by the garage and the living spaces are on the opposite side of the house. No reception at all in the basement.

I am thinking of doing a ubiquiti network config with maybe 3 access points to get solid coverage to the house. I just wonder if it might be better to just buy a mesh system from one of the brands these days that do them simply for ease of use and management. What do you all think?

Edit: I think I am going to go to Costco and get the TP-Link Deco M9, anyone have any experience with it? Reviews are good and Costco has excellent return policy so I'm going to try that out for now. They are on sale right now so it seems worth it.

Inexpensive rack accessories for home network?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 12:19 PM PST

Hey all -- I have a 15u rack that i'm setting up in my home; I need a couple shelves, but was blown away when the cheapest ones I found on amazon were over $20 each! It got me thinking, is there a website anyone can recommend for cheaper rack accessories like shelves, blank spacer plates, etc?

    Thanks!

EDIT: can anyone comment to the legitimacy of cnaweb.com? seems much cheaper than other places... https://www.cnaweb.com/rackaccessories.aspx

    1 gbps internet + AX6000 router

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:25 PM PST

Full disclosure: I'm a total noob with home networking.

I've recently got cable gigabit internet (xfinity) with mb8600 router. Directly connected, I confirmed I get ~960mb/s download speed.

I also recently purchased an AX6000 router. I have an Iphone 11 (wifi 6) and a laptop with an AX200 (wifi 6) card. I did a speed test and on both my laptop and iphone I get ~350-400 mb/s download.

I was wondering, is this a realistic realworld speed for wifi 6 downloads with gigabit internet? IMy concern is maybe there's some configuration I've messed up and given the amount of $$ I've spent, I'd like to confirm these speeds are realistic.

Prewiring new construction - recommendations on PoE switch?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:47 PM PST

I'm finalizing plans for ethernet prewiring in a new home. Current plan is to have an ethernet port in each room, the living room, and the loft. There will be an additional port in the downstairs hallway ceiling for an access point. And I'm thinking four ports outside for PoE cameras.

With that plan, I need 5 PoE ports and 6 unpowered ports.

The builder comes standard with a 12"x12" media box. I can upgrade to a 30"x30" enclosure, but would be $470 extra. Is it possible to get a switch big enough for what I need that can fit in a 12x12 space? It would have to house a cable modem as well.

Can someone recommend a powered switch that may work for this? I might just give in and go for the 30"x30" enclosure. I figured I'd end up needing to buy a 16-port switch that has eight powered or buy two switches, one of which has PoE capability. If I drop down to three exterior cameras, I could buy a small 5-port switch that has 4 PoE ports. But then I'd lose the ability to have cameras covering all four walls of my home.

Good Wifi card for permanent VPN-protected wifi hotspot

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:15 PM PST

I've tried for a few hours to get the VPN working on the Asus AC2900 RT-AC86U which is connected to another router (something rated for 500 Mbps that the FiOS ISP provided).

I failed. But i succeeded in creating a wifi hotspot using a USB Network Interface Card on a Windows 7 VMWare VM. I'd much rather let a VM run and serve a guest network with VPN protection rather than waste any more hours on the router.

What PCI, PCI-E, USB or other wifi card do you recommend for 24/7 trouble-free performance? In my experience, the USB don't work so well.

I've already tried some very-highly-reviewed stuff like the Alfa AWUS036NHA (hard-crash USB driver error when it's connected and disconnected many times to VMWare without reboot). I got another highly-reviewed TP Link 802.11ac NIC that also won't stay connected for 24/7 use. Maybe you can help?

Arris Tech Support - Do They Need Computer Control Access?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 04:15 PM PST

RCN has royally F'd my modem by pushing a firmware update to it that's for one of their combo router/modem models when I have my own SB8200. My network has been a mess since they did this and, of course, they refuse to accept responsibility even though they admit it's most likely a firmware issue and I can't instlal the firmware but whatever.

I contact Arris support and they noted they can fix it, but then said that to do so they would have to have logmein access for at least 30 mins with an ethernet cable direct connect. I told them I'd have to get back to the as it seemed suspect to me, plus I didn't want to get into it at 1130pm on a Sunday. I accessed them directly from the Arris site, not a side one, and as far as I could tell it wasn't a spoofed site.

Is this legit? Do they use logmein, and would they need 30+ mins with my computer to fix this? Should I access it with a virtual machine or would that make their work non possible? Im very wary of logmein but tired of this F up RCN refuses to take resposibility for.

    Thanks

    MAC Address Filtering

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:56 PM PST

I have a quick question and wonder if you guys can answer it.

I am currently working in a shared space. In this shared space they give me an Ethernet port on the wall. This port is set up for static public IP address.

I add my firewall and switch to it. There IT tells me I need to give them all the MAC addresses of all the device for whitelisting on there end.

My question is how does that work. When my device hits my firewall and send data out is it the WAN port of my firewall MAC address that it uses or is it the MAC address of the device behind my firewall.

I am not sure what they have behind what I have in my room.

    Any insight would be great.

    Cable Modem speed problems

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:28 PM PST

My ISP was just at my home and checked my internet speed before cable modem at 1.2GB. The technician then connected my cable modem and checked the speed with his device and got 230MB from Ethernet. I plugged the same Ethernet cable directly into my computer, i cannot get over 100MB (I am provisioned for 200). I have tested two Ethernet connections on my desktop i have also switched Ethernet from auto-neg to 1GB full duplex and also tried 100MB. Nothing seems to help. Cable modem: Arris Surfboard SB6190. Any ideas of what to try?

Suggestion for Tomato RAF w/mesh router?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 07:13 PM PST

I have a N66u running Tomato RAF Firmware v1.28.9014 MIPSR2-RAF-v1.3g. It's been rock solid for me until recently.

My internet provide is Rogers (Canadian) and they require their own modem/router and pod system to run their tv boxes. They bought the system from Comcast so if you have Comcast I imagine it's like that.

I tried to put their modem into bridge mode and only using my Asus n66u but the signal isn't capable of providing each TV box with enough bandwidth or data.

I'd like to find my own mesh solution that I can run Tomato (RAF or another version) and get back control of my network.

I'm hoping one of you will have a solution or suggestion.

EDIT: Maybe an Asus air mesh router and Lyra pods? That seems to be on the open source Tomato RAF list.

New Home Network setup in a new house

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:57 PM PST

I am going to be moving into a new house in a few weeks and want to wire the house with Ethernet but was looking for some advice. House is about 2150 sqft and the previous owners wired some security cameras up via POE in a closet in one of the bedrooms. I plan to put a rack in there to set everything up with. The runs for the look to go up into the attic and there is also a access panel above it to the attic. The house is near the water so it is built up about 6 ft with a crawl space that is bellow and runs the entire length of the house. I think it would be easier to run all the ethernet in that crawl space under the house rather than in the attic since I live in Florida. I don't think any run in the house will be over 150 ft so I believe cat6 should be good enough for what I am doing. I am think about trying to run the cable myself but will probably get some quotes from some places near me that just run cables for Ethernet or home theater type work. Few questions I had were cat6 should be good enough or am I under thinking this? I currently have 2 Linksys Velop nodes from my current house that I am bring and plan to get Frontier FIOS at our new place. I am unfamiliar with how the tech of ONT work so would i plug it right into the parent node or do I need their modem to be able to do that? I appreciate any input or suggestions any of you guys have. Thank you

    Most of my devices are wifi as i use the VPN function on the router so i can watch US Hulu, Netflic etc;

    Static IP question/Problem

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 06:25 PM PST

So I'm doing a favor for my parents business, and they want me to configure there computers with static IPV4 addresses. That they paid for and received from the ISP. Simple enough, as they are premade static IP's and DNS server address. All I had to do was plug it in to IPV4 properties. When I have the computers configured correctly they connect to the internet but take a extremely long time to load any web page. Has anyone ever encountered this issue before, or could I possibly be missing a step?

    Best VPN Server.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 10:15 AM PST

Looks to use a home vpn server to access my lab awhile I travel. I'm wanting it to be on Windows since I'm more familiar with that, plus if my wife needs to restart the box she knows how too. I tried OpenVPN and doesn't play well with my subnets.

    Intermittently can't resolve websites?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:29 PM PST

I'm experiencing a weird issue where websites occasionally (like 1 in 25) won't load. The error occurs when I browse to a new website, with an error message something like "server not found" followed by whatever message the browser displays like "Hmmm, we can't reach this page". The error page displays instantly (as opposed to timing out over several seconds). Mostly, I use firefox but I've observed this with chrome as well.

On a refresh/reload, the page loads.

Router is Netgear R7000. Modem is CM1000. I will say I only started to notice this problem when I started using the CM1000 modem, which is also when I switched internet providers.

I've tried both google and cloudflare DNS servers, so it doesn't appear to be the DNS servers. This also seems to only happen on wired connection (direct to my PC) and not over wifi to my laptop or other devices.

Where should I start looking, or what I start doing to troubleshoot this?

How to troubleshoot continuous packet loss/poor connection to server when playing multiplayer PC games?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 05:02 PM PST

Hello, I've been experiencing poor network quality when playing multiplayer games (Overwatch, Star Wars Battlefront II) which pretty much renders me useless when playing.

When I play Overwatch, I receive these orange icons:

    https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/overwatch/t/orange-icon-in-the-top-left/191366

It seems to denote that I am experiencing both packet loss and poor quality of connection to the gaming servers.

I have attempted to reach out to my ISP (Comcast), but they haven't really been able to do anything long term to fix the issue. Last time they visited, they installed what I think is called an attenuator between the coax cable and the coax outlet on my wall. They said this device is supposed to regulate and stabilize the flow of the internet, but at the cost of the internet speed(?) Sorry I don't know too much about this. Long story short, this was over a year ago, and I'm not sure if I noticed any improvements with the attenuator and it was misplaced so I don't have it installed anymore.

I've attempted some basic troubleshooting. Power cycling the modem, the router, my computer, double checking my NIC, reseating it properly.

    Would someone please assist?

    Modem: NETGEAR CM1100

    Router: NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700

    Thank you!

    Asus RT-AC68R - One SSID?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 09:50 AM PST

I have an older Asus RT-AC68R router. I have been looking through the online support documents and I cannot figure out if I can assign one SSID for both channels. Are there common issues with running one versus two SSIDs? I have been running with two separate SSIDs but curious about how it would work with just one SSID.

I am looking to change because I am thinking about getting a second router (AC68U) to add as a wired AiMesh point. I have a few iot devices (nest, wyze, ecobee), two iphones, and two laptops. Mostly everything else used a wired connection.

    "Bypassing" AP isolation

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:45 PM PST

I am not particularly educated when it comes to networking, and so I find myself asking you fine folks for help.

I live in an apartment where the WiFi that is supplied has AP isolation enabled with no way for me to disable it. This makes it impossible for me to connect my various smart home devices. I have tried using Connectify with some success, but it is very unstable and does not allow wired and wireless sharing at the same time.

I do, however, have an unused ethernet port straight from the wall accessible to me. Would it be as simple as just purchasing a cheap router and connecting that to the wall, or does AP isolation happen earlier in the chain, f.ex. at the modem?

Both me and my Hue bulbs would greatly appreciate any advice you may have to give :)

Using Telephone ethernet connections in a large grid

    Posted: 02 Mar 2020 03:03 PM PST

The power grid in my home is also connected to the farm adjacent to it. This means there are many large machines (huge refrigerators, machines, ec) which can produces dirty electricity. I want to know if my Ethernet connection would stable going through telephone connectors. Im planning to use these . Otherwise I plan to run Ethernet through shielded coaxial cable (although thats a bit more work). All thoughts, inputs and opinions are welcome.
