    Upgrading GPU, Do y’all agree?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:25 AM PST

So I built my first PC on the 5th of February and I have never been more excited in my life!! I decided to go with an AMD build so I have a Ryzen 7 2700x and a 5700xt but there's one slight problem... MY VIDEO CARD SUCKS 🙁 Their are waaay too many driver issues and I get too many crashes on games that don't even work the GPU. Like I'm crashing on L4D2.... really.. sooo I decided I'm going to change from that to a 2070 super. Y'all think I should make the switch ?

UPDATE: Just got a EVGA FTW3 Ultra 2070 super graphics card and I'm happy af. Thank y'all for the support, I'll let you know if I have any issues with this card but I'm %1000 sure I won't (:

ANOTHER UPDATE: My 2070 super works flawlessly and as expected for its price.. I just want to say one thing though.. I am not downplaying AMD at all. I am still extremely happy with my build and the 5700xt worked really well when it wasn't having issues. It's just that right now I don't have the time to stick around with that card, I need something fast and efficient! I also noticed that some people who have these cards aren't having issues and that's good! I was just unfortunate enough to get the short end of the stick lol. You never know though I might go back to a 5700xt in the future if they ever figure out their driver issues. Thanks again!

    [GPU] There are so many

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:14 AM PST

I'm heading to Micro Center next week and forgetting all of the other awesome deals, the GPU prices are making what I thought was an easy choice, into a pretty tough decision. First World problems...after my budget post on processors and GPU's a few days ago, my finances have gotten permanently and exponentially better. This is not to brag, but to sah thank you to everyone that gave me advice and told me to hold off on what would have been a poor purchase. I can now build my daughter her first gaming rig (my first build also) I've gotten off topic. Thank you for this sub and I've not been this excited since and happy in a very long time.

    Upgrade from Ryzen 7 1700 to Ryzen 7 2700x or 3700x on AB350 Mobo ?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 04:37 AM PST

    Hi All,

My CPU became faulty recently and it's time for me to buy another Ryzen processor. My current Mobo is Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 and the faulty processor is Ryzen 7 1700. I now have the financial means to either buy a Ryzen 7 2700x or 3700x.

This is how the prices look like in my region:

    • Ryzen 7 1700 - £206.70
    • Ryzen 7 2700 - £129.00
    • Ryzen 7 2700x - £152.00
    • Ryzen 7 3700x - £259.00

    My PC Specs:

    • Ryzen 1700 (Dead)
    • Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3
    • 16GB DDR4 3000 Mhz
    • EVGA 1080 8GB SC
    • Corsair RM850X

My current Mobo had BIOS updated a few years ago, so around 2017 or 2018 and there is no way for me to upgrade it as my current CPU have crapped out on me. I might also replace the Mobo if the processor and Mobo costs no more than £300 together.

I know that X is for overclocking and I don't do it but I have included the said processors as I couldn't find a pure 2700 or 3700.

Now, the main question when it comes to the jump in the series is, does the newer Ryzen processors provides enough difference between 1700 and 2700 or 3700 for me to shell out extra cash for it ? Also, I think that my current Mobo might not support it as it's dated a bit (Chipset itself) and has BIOS that I'm unable to flash to a newer version.

    Any advice here ?

    Thanks

Low FPS all of a sudden

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:14 AM PST

    Hello fellow redditors,

The title already spoils the problem I encountered. I got a RTX 2070 Super this summer and out of a sudden I got very (very) low frames in every game I used to play on Ultra settings 1080p. For example: Assetto Corsa Competizione, used to rock 144 fps on Ultra and now I only get 58? Same for Escape from Tarkov: 100 FPS while being in a busy area to 44 ;-;.

I did update my motherboard, my drivers for my graphics card and my Windows version the same day because my Oculus had issues connecting.

My user benchmark says my RTX 2070 super gets 102% score, so that's not the problem.

    Any help would be appriciated.

TLDR; High end gaming pc has low FPS after Windows, Nvidia and Bios update.

Solution: Go to your Nvidia settings (right click on desktop and open Nvidia configuration thingy), check in your 3D settings for DSR and turn that off. The problem for me was that Nvidia changed this settings to 2.00x, this means that Nvidia tries to make every game 4K resolution. If this does not help, use DDU to clean your drivers and revert to the one working the best (before you got the issue of course).

Looking for ATX or micro-ATX case recommendations for new Ryzen PC

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:08 AM PST

About to upgrade my office PC and have most of my parts figured out. I'm planning to move from a mini-itx Haswell system to a Ryzen based ATX or micro-ATX build and will be moving the PSU and GPU from that build over in the upgrade. I like the size of mini-ITX, but not a fan of the upgrade limitations it imposes. Unfortunately, I'm running into issues finding a case that will work.

Current list of parts I'm thinking of getting or already have: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Octoray/saved/LyDqpg

I don't really have room to place the PC on the right side of my desk and will instead need to place it on a large shelf on the left side of my desk. This has been fine for my current PC inside a Fractal Design Core 500, but not so good for placing a larger PC. I've been looking for awhile now and haven't found anything that would work that isn't insanely expensive (Lian Li PC-07S), ugly, too big to fit on the shelf, too small to build inside of or is too open (Thermaltake P5). It seems the market is heavily oriented towards PCs that are placed on the right side of the desk.

So I'm trying to find a case that is less than about $160, ideally has some sort of window to look inside (never had a PC you can look inside of without taking a side panel off before and would like to see what it's like), provides decent airflow so that my computer doesn't thermal throttle under heavy loads and fits at least one of the following criteria:

    1. Inverse case with motherboard upside down and window on right side of case - potentially ideal situation as it could be placed along the shelf and size wouldn't be as much of an issue. I kinda like the Thermaltake Core G3, but would rather not have to buy an SFX PSU to get it to work and it appears that the Corsair Carbide 600C is out of stock everywhere I've looked.
    2. Traditional case with window on left side - due to shelf depth, it has to be less than 14.5" in depth to fit on the shelf and still have room to connect cables in the back. Having trouble finding anything shorter than 15.5" in ATX, but would consider stepping down to micro-ATX MB if necessary. Something like a slightly smaller NZXT H510 or Coolermaster Q500L would fit the look I'm going for.
    3. PC case that can be placed horizontally across shelf (akin to HTPC cases) - still have the 14.5" depth limitation though and would like to have a window to look down at the PC components (kinda like a smaller and cheaper Nanoxia Project S or a much cheaper Lian Li PC-07S)
    4. Cube case - still needs to be less than 14.5" deep but can be much wider if necessary. The best option I've found is the Rosewill Cullinan PX but not sure how good it is and I've seen reviews of people complaining about dust.
    5. Non-traditional case - something like an enclosed Thermaltake P5 or a smaller version of the Thermaltake Tower 900. I like the idea of a PC case that's supposed to be placed sideways and has the power and I/O on the wide side and the cabling can be routed out the other wide side.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Ryzen 3400g vs 4000 series

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 06:02 AM PST

I want to build my mom a computer. She uses excel, word, usually has a lot of tabs open and some other programs. She's a medical transcriptionist. The 3400G seems like a very attractive option but I'm just wondering if I should wait for the 4000 series. They come out soon, right? Would it even "matter" for this home/work use? 4c/8t with modest clock seems good already.

    Ryzen missing cores?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 11:49 AM PST

I've just now completed my Ryzen build, finally got the RAM and it booted fine. I flashed the BIOS to the latest one, updated Chipset Drivers etc. etc.

And everything seems to be working fine, at least everything I needed. Vega 8 is running well and I found no issues. However my CPU usage seemed to be very high, so I went into task manager and to my surprise I found this: https://imgur.com/a/CvoJdOp (only 2/4 cores being detected)

I tried lurking around the BIOS and System Configuration to no avail. Any tips on what might be causing this and how do I fix it?

note: the processor is 4 core 4 thread

Is my PC killing my HDDs?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

A few weeks ago, I replaced the internal hard drive that came with my refurbished computer because Windows stopped recognizing it. At first, the replacement Seagate HDD worked great, but lately it's been showing signs of imminent death (randomly disconnecting and reconnecting, games installed on that drive hanging for seconds at a time, odd noises coming from the HDD during use).

Is there something wrong with my PC? I've read that computers that kill HDDs could have an issue with the PSU, could that be the issue? If so, how can I diagnose this for sure? Any other reasons my HDDs could keep dying? My PC otherwise runs great.

I've replaced the SATA cable with a new one, but unfortunately I don't have access to another PC to see if the hard drives have issues there.

Will i see any fps improvement in gaming at all?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 05:37 AM PST

I'm building a new PC but reusing my GPU because i don't have much money so I'll be going for some parts this month, I'll be reusing some old parts from my current computer (STD,HDD,GPU) and was wondering if i would see any improvement from upgrading from this piece of shit to the newer piece of shit.

    Clicking noise coming from PC?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:32 PM PST

I've had this PC for a little over a year now and suddenly it has started to make some strange clicking noises towards the top of the case from my observations. I asked my friends what they believe it could be and they suggested it could be the fans on my cooler. My current cooler is a CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i v2 AIO Liquid CPU Cooler. I checked online and it seems like it could be one of the following two issues. Either a loose fan bearing or bubbles inside the cooler. Would anyone happen to have any ideas as to what it could be and potential fixes? Thank you for your time!

    I feel I should mention:

-Noise stops after closing a game. Not immediately but roughly after 5 minutes.

-Noise lasts for 2 seconds when booting PC and then stops again.

-Is loud enough to be heard over my microphone at times.

Need help with my first PC build with RGB (Ex-Mac-User)

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:22 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vJZt9G

I want to build a RGB-wise good looking, minimalist and silent PC for graphic design and video editing tasks and streaming. I also want to upgrade the stock case fans to nice RGB ones, but I'm not sure if all RGB components mentioned above in the list will work together.

As a 10 year Mac user now switching to PC, I need your suggestions for RGB case fans and feedback to the setup above. Thanks.

Brought a new case and PSU; now my PC won’t start up.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 01:03 PM PST

Hey guys, I will first start but saying these are my specs:

Motherboard - Asus prime B450M-A Cpu - Amd ryzen 5 3600X Graphics card - Nvidia RTX 2060 Super reference Ram - 16Gb Crucial Ballistix Sport 2400mhz Storage - Silicon Power 1Tb Nvme ssd PSU - be quite! Pure Power 11 500w

I bought the PC second hand and everything worked great. All I wanted was a new nice looking case and a new PSU. I swapped everything out but now when I turn on my PC the fan turns on and the motherboard lights up but my monitor stays black with the fans on constant full blast.

I will admit this was my first build. I plugged in the 24 pin power cable, the 8 pin CPU cable and the VGA1 cable ( I think it means PCIE power cable). The only unused power cables are my VGA 2 cable, and two cables with 4 pin inputs.

I will be externally greatful as I start building in the afternoon and it's now been 8 hours :(

    Thank you all.

Budget Build for my little brother

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:11 PM PST

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/t3HVmg

Some backstory: Hi, I've put this list together based on some suggestions. I was planning to buy myself a PC in the end of April and buy my brother one as well on May 1st for his birthday. I've then decided to just buy my brother the PC instead of two half decent PC's.

I'm trying to make a bit minimalistic setup and so it will fit with my Logitech g502 mouse and g413 keyboard. He has a hyperx cloud headset, which he will be using.

I've tried to make sure he can play 1080p60fps+ with the games he plays. He plays fortnite, roblox and minecraft (And I want to lend it a bit to play GTA V).

Help: I need your opinions on this list. I've tried to make a decent build (tower + monitor + speakers, eventually corsair mousepad) with 640€ as my budget. Some prices are a bit inaccurate. I will start buying in April when the prices are dropping. I'll be picking up some used stuff such as the rx 580. And I will most likely buy a 1600 AF instead of the 2600. Let me know if I should change anything, I really don't wanna spend above 640€, but if there's a big jump on performance I'll do so. Also if there's anything overpriced or way to lower the price without affecting the performance and reliability tell me.

    Issues after installing new ram

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 03:11 PM PST

Hello, I am having an issue trying to boot up after trying to install a new stick of ram.

    Today

I tried to add a stick of ballistix 3000 8gb sport to my pc. According to their website it said that the ram would be compatible with my MB (msi x370 Gaming plus). Previously, I only had 8gb stick of g skill ageis from when I built my pc back in 2018. Anyways, when I added it and tried to turn on my pc the lights indicating faulty cpu and ram came on. I couldn't get it to boot with them in. Eventually I just switched back to just my original 8 gb stick and after a few tries and playing around with it (idk what I did) my pc came back on and booted normally.

Now, I wasn't satisfied with just staying with my original set up, so I tried to troubleshoot. I installed the latest x370 drivers from AMD and tried to install the latest bios update. However I was having some issue with that and every time I'd try to install it, I'd get an error saying the file was corrupted. So I never really installed the update. I don't believe I bricked my mb here because I was able to boot normally after this.

I tried to add the 8gb stick one last time and it didn't work again. So now I'm back to my original set up

However, it won't boot. I hit the power switch and the lights for cpu and ram come up, but do disappear after a few seconds, however I'm not getting a display on my screen. All the lights in my case come on, but I'm not getting a signal on my screen (my hdmi is plugged into my gpu, but I have tried plugging into into my mb to no success). My cpu fan spins and so do my gpu fans (but the stop spinning after about 20 seconds) my USB ports don't seem to be working. My keyboard and mouse won't illuminate, but the light on my usb hub is coming on. My computer is not shutting itself down or anything, it just runs without displaying anything. Does anyone know a fix??? Or do I need a new MB? Btw when I stop the power from my psu, the cpu Problem light flashes twice and then the bottom three flash once (I don't know if this matters tho)

Sorry if this post isn't very clear

It's time for a new gaming computer

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:58 AM PST

I built my last PC about 5 years ago. I mostly game on my system but I am no professional gamer. I just enjoy gaming as a hobby.

    Core I7-5820K
    GTX 970
    16GB of RAM
    2 1TB SSDs

I can play games at 1080p with decent graphics, but I would like to start maximizing my graphics and I would also like to do some 1440p gaming as well. I am really looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077 as well as a slew of other games that are coming out this year. I like FPS but I also do a fair amount of RPGs and RTS games as well.

I have been an Intel guy through and through but with the Ryzen processors on the market, I am considering giving them a try. Here is what I came up with for a parts list. I have more money in my budget if needed.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QGpqPn

    Questions....

    1. The monitor is what I have the biggest question on. A 27 inch is what I have now which is good enough which is why I chose the Acer Predator 27 inch. However, I think an ultrawide would be better like the Acer Predator X34. Any thoughts on what a good monitor would be?
    2. The case is the same case as I have now, but I am going to reuse this computer which is why I am going to buy a new case. I like the Corsair cases a lot, but I am wondering if there is anything better from a full tower case perspective that I should be looking at.
    3. Since I am getting the Ryzen 9, would it be better to just go with the Core I9-9900k? I would spend a bit more, but I am very comfortable with Intel processors. Never had an AMD before.
    4. Let me know about the parts that I speced out and what you would recommend.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:17 PM PST

Thanks to the people on the sub for helping me pick the parts on my first build! Just need to do external cable managing and it's fully ready! It absolutely shreds all the games while recording! setup overall isn't very aesthetically pleasing to most of this community, according to the people who downvoted the full setup earlier, but it's still an amazing PC with amazing peripherals to me! Am I crazy or is the H510 elite awful?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 02:04 PM PST

I just started a new build using this case. I have the H440 on my old build and figured this one would be as awesome. But so far it's been one of the worst I've ever used. Pretty much a nightmare to get to anything in the case, cable management is way too tight, etc I'm actually considering disassembling what I have put together and buying a different one.

    Am I insane?

Help me determine if I'm having GPU problems or something else?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 01:59 PM PST

Hi guys, and thanks in advance!

Here's where I'm at: I've had a couple of problems that should seemingly have to do with my GPU drivers, but they've at least once persisted past a full formatting, so I'm wondering if they have to do with my hardware. (Parts list at the bottom!)

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

    Problem 1:

    • Problem: When my computer is asleep or sitting idle for a while, I will occasionally not get any video signal.
    • Attempted Solutions: I've done the usual troubleshooting attempts of looking up similar situations and following the steps people suggest, none of which have worked. Included: reseating the card, trying different cables, cleaning out my video drivers and reinstalling from the website, testing with a different monitor, etc.
    • Successful Solutions: None have worked! Restarting temporarily solves the problem (I'd have to use the power button to restart), but after reformatting did seem to happen less often.

    Problem 2:

    • Problem: Twice now, I've gotten a BSOD followed by a bootloop. The error of the initial BSOD was "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED", with a "what failed" message that read "nvlddmkm.sys." This first happened 2-3 months ago and then again last night.
    • Attempted Solutions: After looking up these codes, I determined that this almost certainly an issue with my drivers. I tried the various solutions provided by people online, including: checking for any recent driver updates (there were none in either instance), attempting startup repair, booting into safe mode -> clearing out my GPU drivers -> reinstalling them from the website, running a memtest in order to see if they had to do with my memory (no issues found).
    • Successful Solution: After attempting these all, I eventually gave up and reinstalled Windows from a thumb drive, which worked--except, like I mentioned, this has happened twice... I just had to reformat again last night due to the same BSOD followed by a bootloop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Here are my two basic questions:

    • Are there any "GPU tests" I can run the way I ran memtest to determine if my issue has to do with my GPU?
    • Am I right in assuming this is a hardware problem because the issue persisted through formatting Windows & driver resets?

The case will either be this Cooler Master or this one from NZXT. I will also be keeping the GTX 1080 Ti from my current rig, and upgrading that sometime later this year.

A lot of these components were picked with the help of Puget System's hardware recommendations for After Effects, as they have a lot of good insight into what makes a good AE build. With that in mind, here are some reasons why I picked some of these parts:

I need 6 total drives: One M.2 for my OS/Applications and one for my AE media cache, a 2TB SSD for project files/working media, one 1TB SSD for my rendered files and one for my game files, and finally a 6TB hard drive for archival/misc.

After Effects prefers CPU speed over total core count, so I'm sticking with the i9-9900k (and will be planning on overclocking) - I also do a lot of VR gaming so that helped my decision. Additionally total RAM size is preferred over RAM speed, thus the 128GB DDR4-2666 memory.

I am hoping all of these parts make sense for what I'm aiming for, but I'm still new to all of this so any advice or recommendations would be amazing! Thanks in advance!

    AMD Ryzen 3600 vs 3600x

I am picking the parts for my new PC build, and just wondering is the extra money worth the upgrade from the 3600 to the 3600x
