Anyone else enjoy the thrill of upgrading and building a pc more then actually playing on it

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:17 AM PST

My best friend has decided he wants to get a pc and it just took me back to when I got my first pc. Ive been explaining everything to him the last few days because he knew literally nothing about pc's and the parts. He went from wanting a basic gaming pc to wanting midrange- highend specs. When I first got mine I just couldn't stop upgrading after my first upgrade. As soon as I got a part , I wanted another. I started with a i5 3rd gen, 1060 and 4gb ram rig and just kept upgrading , I finally stopped at a i7 9700k , 2080ti , 32gb pc because there was nothing I could upgrade that would make a difference . I use my pc for gaming (including vr) and Game development . Since then i haven't upgraded anything. As I'm currently Writing about my friend, I'm smiling because I know he has it all to come. That first sinking feeling when something goes wrong! then the "I'm a genius " feeling when you first build works ! Ah man . Anyway I've reccomended he gets reddit and join this subreddit because it really helped me back in the day . His budget is no more than £1000 for the PC but he still needs to buy keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Hopefully this is the last time I come asking for reviews on my potential build.

Threw everything I was going to buy out the window after watching this.

Any comments or concerns before I start down this path? I narrowed what I wanted out of a PC after lurking on here, /g/, and some youtube videos.

    Dual channel RAM issue

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:49 PM PST

I've been having issues with RAM on my build that I assembled a few months ago, originally having 1x8GB, I added another RAM stick so that I could have 16GB on my system, but after plugging it onto the motherboard both my BIOS and OS show up as having only 8GB.

    About

    Terminal

    System Monitor

    BIOS - Status

    BIOS - Overclocking Settings

    BIOS - DIMMA1

    BIOS - DIMMB1

Tested both sticks on a single slot separately and they seem to work, but when I have both of them plugged in I don't have the extra memory. (even though they do show up on the terminal and Memory-Z)

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version (7B84v2D) and it still shows up as only having 8GB Physical Memory on it.

     These are the specs:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (Stock Cooler)

     MOBO: MSI B450M PRO-M2

     RAM: HyperX Fury 8GB, 2400MHz, DDR4, CL15 (HX424C15FB3/8 and HX424C15FB2/8) (x2)

GPU: AsRock Phantom Gaming RX 570 4GB

     Storage: Kingston A400 120GB

     PSU: Corsair CX450

     OS: Pop!_OS 19.10

Feel free to ask for any additional information.

After saving for the past few years and searching for sales I was able to put together a mid-range build I'm proud of. Still need to figure out the color scheme for the RGB but that can wait until after the post.

    Memory - Corsair RGB Pro Vengeance 2x8GB 3200 c16

My pc is literally bugged, AKA good lord help

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:28 AM PST

I'll give the TLDR. Shortly after I built my pc thanks to everyone here's help my apartment building became infected with roaches. After two months of begging our apartment to even send someone to just check it out and then "losing" every request we put in we briefly considered suing them before just abandoning ship. After another month of my pc sitting in storage I finally got my new place all good to go and tried to boot her up. It turned in fine but the monitor said there was no signal. I figured maybe something had gotten jostled around in the long move and opened her up, only to find roaches and lots of droppings on the motherboard.

I'm currently sitting outside with it at a complete lose of what to do. Is there someway to get them out and the droppings, which are probably causing the issue? Or am I just shit out of luck?

Anyways, looking for any help with my literally bugged pc.

How to switch from Intel to AMD??

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:33 PM PST

If I were to hypothetically switch from an i5 to R7, would my have to do a fresh install of windows and my games? Or would my current SSD automatically recognize the new CPU/drivers?

I still need to buy a monitor and desk. But I plan on utilizing the GreenForest L Shaped Corner Desk ( https://www.amazon.com/GreenForest-L-Shape-Computer-Workstation-3-Piece/dp/B072XG1YP4/ )

and for now just a standard 27 inch monitor, open to suggestions.

When it comes time to setting it all up, is there anything I should look out for? I have heard that the x570 fan might have problems with temp and noise, but some sources have said that it could be fixed with adjusting fan speed in bios.

I planned on following Bitwit's "How to Build a PC! Step-by-step" video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhX0fOUYd8Q&t=674s ), but if there is a better resource to use based off of my equipment, please let me know!

Is the 3700x/3800x a worth upgrade from a 2700 for mostly gaming?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 09:37 AM PST

Microcenter is having some killer deals on the Ryzen 3000 CPUs and I'm wondering whether an upgrade from my 2700 would be worth it. I'm gaming at 1440p with a 2080 Super.

    Best B450 Boards in 2020?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:31 PM PST

Looking for a b450 boards with possible future proofing if possible. I need a board with good audio and would like built in wifi. Have a 2700X and am probably going with a RX580 if that matters. Price isn't a factor.

Was considering the Pro Carbon but considering MSi's recent issues I have been recommended to not go for the board.

    3950x or 9900k gaming/streaming/recording 1440p

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:27 PM PST

I am replacing my current 7700k and 1080fe with a new system.

I am currently trying to decide on the best approach for future proofing and making sure my system is good for what I do.

Currently I stream to Twitch and edit my streams for YouTube making small clips etc. I stream to Twitch at 720p using NVec at 6000k.

My primary display is 1440p, 144hz but I down sample to 720p for Twitch. I want to be able to safely use x264 fast setting at 1440p/144hz and stream to 1080p60 on Twitch. I want to also be able to edit videos still.

I'm stuck on deciding on 9900k or a 3950x. Both would be getting 64gb ram (don't have exact speeds yet).

Edit: my graphics card is a 2080ti

Which of the two are the best for my situation?

144hz monitor limited to 60hz when a video is playing on my secondary monitor.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:27 PM PST

So I got a secondary 60hz monitor recently, one of the reasons for which being so I can have a stream or YouTube vid up while playing a game, and while I certainly can do that, it limits the gameplay on my high ref monitor to 60 unless the game is on fullscreen, which isn't ideal unlike a borderless window. Is there anything I can try and do? I have tried both chrome and firefox and turned hardware acceleration off on both with no success. I use a 5700 xt and the high ref monitor uses freesync, while the 60hz one does not, if that is useful info. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My GPU memory clock speed is all over the place, should i be concerned? (fresh build)

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:26 PM PST

Hey guys, so I just finished my first build last week and im super happy, a budget computer that fits my needs perfectly!

Today however, i opened the MSI Afterburner software for the first time and my memory clock speed is jumping from 800-7000 constantly. I got some pictures of the log here.

    https://imgur.com/a/ySvn1i5

It had me a little worried, and I could not find any good answers on google so I'll try here. Should I be concerned?

its an MSI 1660 super OC super ventus card on a B450 gaming plus max, with ryzen 5 3600x.

Hoping to upgrade from a MacBook Air at some point, and currently looking for feedback.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:16 PM PST

I've been slowly editing this build over the past couple of years just in case I found the money to buy and put it together. I know very little about computer parts, so is it in a good spot right now or what can I do to improve it? Will be used for gaming, hoping to run anything at 60 fps. Prices in CDN:

    Tutorials or advice?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:06 PM PST

So I got all my parts WOOP WOOP! Lol. Anyway I was wondering around YouTube looking for some tutorials because it is my first pc so I want it to work well. I don't think the drivers should be to difficult but the construction probs will be. I'm going to buy one of them anti static wrist things, better safe than sorry I guess, I'm planning on attaching it to my case. My mother board is the asus rog strix b450 so a tutorial with that would be nice. Plus some driver stuff because I don't know all about installing them. I have one of them WiFi devices that you plug in for WiFi. So just a tutorial on things like WiFi drivers or audio drivers or whatever. Can't wait! Please ask me everything you have to question. Thanks.

    144hz???

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 09:14 AM PST

Right now a have a 60hz 1080p monitor seems fine to me. I have a PC I'm going to sell in the near future and have get a little upwards of 300 usd hopefully. I have heard from everyone I ask that 144hz and 60hz is "like night and day". I have never seen one and really don't know if it is worth the 140 or so $ or if I should just put that in to upgrading my rig. Thoughts? Ps: I play mostly Battlefront 2 at the moment

    Looking for mint green case

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 03:59 PM PST

I am trying to find a mint green computer case. So far the only thing I managed to find was this, but it's not available rn.

Any case size is acceptable. (this build will not have gpu, and will be based around whatever case I find)

I'd prefer no glass panel, but I'll take anything I can get.
