    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    First full AMD RGB build

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:04 AM PST

    Hi,

Just wanted to share my latest build.

It's hard to get decent pictures of a blacked out glass window case, but irl I'm so pleased with the result.

Took a bit of trial and error and some research to get the entire RGB setup synced with MSI mystic light but today I finally put in the last piece.

    Speclist:

    • Fractal Vector RS
    • MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX
    • Ryzen 3700X
    • G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600 C16 (16GB)
    • Sapphire Radeon RX5700 XT
    • Corsair RM750x
    • 1 M. 2 SSD and 2 Sata SSD
    • Scythe Kaze Flex RGB PWM 1800 140mm
    • DeepCool Gamer Storm RGB Convertor

GTX 1660 Super or RX 5600 XT for $100 more?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:37 AM PST

Please help me decide between these two GPUs. I'm not sure if the extra $100 is worth it or not considering the driver issues that AMD is having and the fact that the MSI card is the 12Gbps version of the RX 5600 XT:

MSI Radeon RX 5600 XT Mech OC - $409

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER OC - $309

I'm building a small form factor system so am limited to GPU's that are 266 mm or less (SG13 case), which is why I'm looking at these specific cards. It'll have a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU and the display is a 42" HDTV 1080p 60Hz. Advice very much appreciated!

Is $1150 too much to spend on a pc for my age?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST

Hi, So I'm pretty new to pc gaming (only been playing for about a year and a half) and I've decided I want to upgrade to something that'll last me a long time. Im currently looking at a pretty nice build with an RTX 2070 super and R5 3500 but the total is around $1150 AUD. My brother who got me into the PC masterrace says that it's a great idea to upgrade (from gtx 1050 and i3) but my parents both think it's too much money for a 14 year old to spend and, well, they don't really know anything about computers and I think they're worried at spending so much on "a bunch of machinery". How can I convince them it's worth spending that money? Unless you have a counter argument? Any comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

$5.99 + shipping for two sets of trim? Nah

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:30 PM PST

I didn't want to spend the extra money when I found out the fans don't come with the white trim so I painted them myself!

A little bit over sprayed at some areas but I'll make sure to keep that part away from wandering eyes in the final build.

Latest Build Completed... It wasn't supposed to be this outrageous

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:17 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/vqmHRsI

This build started off because I wanted to build an air-cooled powerful PC. That eventually turned into a full hard tube custom loop.

I started with the the NH-D15 Chromax. I heard all of the rave reviews about it and decided to give it a shot. Next I decided to go with an Asus Strix 2080ti because it has great cooling and it matched the D15 chromax. I ended up buying 2 of them for the build. So now I had to decide on a platform... I need something with enough pcie lanes to support the NVLinked gpu's and the NVME drives that I planned on using. Cascade Lake-X was perfect for it. The only 10 series that I could find available for some reason was the i9-10940x. This CPU is actually great for a good balance between price, core count, speed, and cpu lanes. After getting everything into the case (MSI Gungnir) I realized there is not enough space for two huge cards like the strix without choking them. So I moved to the tried and true Lian Li 011D XL. With the new case I discovered that EK made a distro plate/pump/res combo specifically for it. Thats what led to it going from a non-rgb air cooled build to a full RGB custom loop.

Cpu is at 4.5ghz all cores Ram is at 3600mhz 860 QVO are Raid 0 FireCuda is Boot Drive 7600p is game/scratch drive

Im thinking about returning the omega for the encore to get the extra pcie lanes, and ram support.

One small change to the SSD as it's the Lexar NM610 model, but I couldn't find it on PCPartPicker.

I'm also planning to upgrade my GPU to the Nvidia 3000 series when they come out!

    Thanks in advance guys :)

A bit of confusion regarding the m.2

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:17 PM PST

So for my first build im going for a budget m.2 and i have an msi b450 a pro max. In my local store there are 2 kinds of m.2 : one with one notch and the other with 2 notches. Which one do I get, will either of them fit in my mobo and whats the difference between them. The one with 2 notches is the one i would prefer since the lower price. Also would you recommend getting a sata ssd instead of an m.2? thanks

Upgraded cases yesterday to a Corsair 220T RGB, encountering 100% CPU usage on all cores while running no programs. Can cases do that? I’m super confused

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 08:44 AM PST

Went from running 25-50% CPU usage on all cores with an old case even playing games, to 100% CPU usage at the desktop and the only thing I changed is the case. Would the front IO on the case be causing this? Super confused.

Building a work/light gaming PC with an existing motherboard and GPU

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:42 PM PST

    Hello friends.

I'm building a PC for a friend who just needs it to play indie games and run apps like photoshop. I'm trying to save money and have a leftover motherboard and GPU I was hoping to use. I know this will limit the build, but I just wanted to make sure it'll be usable for someone's work PC.

Quick question regarding b450 mobo and m.2

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 05:49 AM PST

This is my parts list as of right now, I'll be ordering tonight after work! I'm very excited, my only concern is that the motherboard might not support m.2 SSDs. Would anyone be able to let me know if it would work? I can always go up to an x570 mobo for the speed, I'm just trying to keep a budget.

Good parts for SFF personal pc/workstation?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST

Hey everyone! Im trying to build a pc for around $2500 NZD ($1600 USD) to use as my personal/gaming pc aswell as for work. I utilize a lot of 3D applications and video editing, with some of my software including: Maya/blender, Zbrush, substance painter, mari, unity, premiere/davinci resolve, Nuke.

I am also anticipating moving around a lot and would like the build something that I can take with me on a plane, so I decided on the RVZ03 case.

I am having a few problems considering parts. I just changed my mind on the cpu from the i7 - 9700k to the Ryzen 7 3700x but I need advice on whether this was the right call. Will there be any issues with the software im using? I can save about $200 USD on the cpu and motherboard if I go with Ryzen but I see arguments for both.

Are there any other issues with my build? Any better cases to recommend? I would love to know what you guys think.

    3600 or 2700x for gaming?

I accidentally applied customer fan-curve without needing to launch MSI Afterburner, then I removed my GPU and re-installed it, now it is gone and I need to launch Afterburner every-time!

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:07 AM PST

I have no idea how I did it initially, I own Gigabyte 1650 Super Windforce OC 4GB GDDR6 card. It has that lame 3D ACTIVE FAN BS that turns of the fan when GPU is under load but my GPU hits 50C at idle which I don't want it to be all the time.

I started by selecting custom fan curve option and disabling auto fan management on Afterburner, which was at 0% as default.

Then I went ahead and created nodes on the graph, hit applied and hit the tick mark on after burner's UI. It applied that curve and kept my fans running even when I started my machine without the help of afterburner running initially or what so ever.

But then, i removed my GPU to clean and re-installed it, now the automatic fan-curves disappeared. I have to launch AB all the time to make to make the fans spin. It wont pick up automatically like i did earlier.

Is there a way to permanently apply the fan-curve without needing to launch or make an app run all the time?

    1440p 144Hz build at or under $1600?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming - namely in preparation for Overwatch 2. Would like the machine to be capable for other newer games as well.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p 144Hz minimum 60FPS but hopefully higher FPS at highest graphics settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I've got two builds - one AMD and one Intel:

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'd love to get a build together at or under $1600 for 1440p 144Hz including OS and monitor. I've included a 24 inch monitor here that I think works (my understanding is that Nvidia cards are now able to use Freesync?). In the Intel build I upgraded RAM and hard drive from the PC part picker recommendations to more reputable brands. I did not do this for the AMD build. My Main questions are

    1) Is my video card/monitor selection okay? I am presuming that I can enjoy the benefits of 1440p/144Hz on my main monitor while having an older crappy 1080p one as my secondary?

    2) Are there places I can shave off money while still meeting my goals on either build? I am not married to Intel or AMD, just whatever one better fits my purpose.

    3) Will I see a performance difference from 3000/3200/3600 RAM? Which is the best choice?

    4) Should I really bother upgrading parts to like Samsung or G. Skill or is this a good place to save money?

    5) Any advice for someone who has last built a computer in 2011/12.

Are RX 5700 xt cards any good? I've heard some people say they've experienced crashing.

I'm looking at using an RX 5700 xt card for an upcoming build. I've heard really good things about the THICC iii card, but I've heard that some 5700 xt cards crash and have some other problems. Have some cards overcome this problem or should I just go for a different card?

Thinking of getting a futureproof GPU, help!

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 02:03 PM PST

    So my current system is:

    CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

    MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk

    RAM: Corsair 16GB

GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 3GB SC

    ETC...

    On a 1080p 144hz monitor.

The 1060 3GB has served me well but I want to get a powerhouse upgrade that will last me a couple of years and easily max out new titles on Ultra settings at 1080p with comfortable 60 fps+ (obviously the more frames the better). I have no immediate plans to get a monitor with higher resolution as I am content with 1080p because I play a lot of esports games. But I still love playing other AAA single-player experiences too.

My initial thoughts were to either go for the RX 5700 XT, RTX 2060 Super, and the RTX 2070 Super. But I found out that the 5700 XT is having some driver issues so I am cautious about that. The only reason I am crossed between the 2060S and the 2070S is that I want to try some ray-tracing eventually when the games come through, mainly Cyberpunk 2077, and I'm not sure how great the 2060S is with RTX ON. What do you guys think? Is the 2070S overkill on a 1080p? My budget is about $400-500, but as always, the cheaper the better.

First time builder, should info with Asus TUF Gaming x570 plus or Aorus x570 Elite? Or others

First time builder, should I go with Asus TUF Gaming x570 plus or Aorus Elite x570?

(Had a typo in the title)

So I'm just about ready to purchase my parts for my first PC build. Ive got all the parts decided for sure except the Mobo. I am trying to make the best pc I can with my budget I have. I am making a Ryzen 7 3700x build with a 5700xt GPU. I am on the fence between two motherboards that I have heard really good things about. I'm still relatively new to all the best parts and lingo. I need help deciding between the Asus TUF gaming x570 plus (Wi-Fi) and the Aorus x570 elite. I want to know that the better overall board would be. I aim to overclock my PC to the max safe point (nothing too crazy that's going to drastically impact the lifespan of my PC). What mobo would be better for me as far as RAM speeds, overclocking abilities, VRM, and so on. I want the best overall mobo. If there is another board any of you suggest that might be better that isn't more than maybe 300-400 total then I will take other ideas into consideration.

Suddenly running into Event 41, Kernel-Power issues

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:03 PM PST

My build, running Windows 10 Pro, was all built roughly 7-8 months ago:

PSU Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 750W 80+ Gold
GPU ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti (Corsair H80 AIO pump)
    CPU i-7 8700K
    Motherboard ASUS Prime Z370-A
    RAM x2 Ballistix 16GB (can't remember speeds)
    Storage x2 1TB NVME M.2 (MicroCenter Brand)
Fans 4 Corsair LL120 Case Fans (Running on Corsair RGB software/hub)
Monitors x2 HP Omen 27 Gaming Monitors (both on 144Hz)
KB+M Razer Black Widow, Logitech G-502 Mouse
PC Case Cougar Conquer (Open Air)

If this is the wrong place to post this, or there is a better subreddit for it, please let me know!

    _ _ _

For the past 2-3 weeks, my PC has been intermittently hard-restarting with no warnings or errors displayed, just from being in the middle of my game to a black screen and rebooting. This has only started happening since I started playing FFXIV.

Windows Event Viewer creates a critical error log with "Event 41, Kernel-Power" each time this happens. I've also been watching my temps, GPU never goes above 60C, CPU rarely above 55C.

This does not happen with any other games that I play, including Destiny 2, Halo: MCC, Borderlands 3, GTA V, NieR, Fallout 4, and a bunch of other titles running on max settings.

I've tried limiting the power draw on my GPU to 80% through Afterburner, limiting framerate down as far as 60FPS and 1080p resolution, making sure that there are no power restrictions anywhere, and even setting the CPU wattage to normal instead of adaptive. Nothing is making a difference, and the reboot/crashes are completely random with no obvious triggers.

I'm adding the event details in this imgur album, if anyone needs more information or has any advice on what I can do to fix this I would sincerely appreciate it! I would love to be able to play this game without wondering when it's gonna drop me out and close everything I had open.

Changed RAM speed in BIOS and now getting no video output

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:03 PM PST

Hey all. I submitted this exact question a few days ago but am having a very similar but slightly different problem.

You can read all the details there, but basically I changed my RAM speed manually in the settings which caused the bios not to post (absolutely no video output). I was told to remove the CMOS battery for a few minutes and then boot it up again.

That worked, and then I changed the RAM speed again after enabling D.O.C.P and now it's back to the same problem- no video output. This time removing the CMOS battery has done nothing, still no video. All fans are on, GPU light, LAN lights, USB drive lights, etc.

I already have new RAM coming in tomorrow, should I just wait until that comes and try turning it on then? Or is there another solution here?

    Thanks!

Opinion on first build? Budget = $1300

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:47 AM PST

Hey guys! I've been saving up spare money for years and have finally decided to build my first PC. My budget is $1300. I am relatively new to PC building and was wondering if the part list I've compiled below is good. If there's anything I am over/under-spending on please let me know. I plan on using this PC for common school tasks, some programming, and to play games like Ark and Cyberpunk when it releases. Additionally, I don't mind going over the budget a little bit if you guys think that there is an upgrade I need to make. I want to have a dual monitor set up with this PC and I already have a Acer SB220Q bi monitor as well as a 500 gb external Samsung SSD. I do not plan on over clocking this PC so I was wondering if the default cooler that comes with the Ryzen 5 3600 will be enough or if I need to spend extra on a 3rd party cooler. Thanks for the time!
