Point me in the direction of a lightweight, long lasting 13-14" 2-in-1 for academic research? Budget >£1300 and urgent purchase

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 02:16 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: £1300 and will be purchasing in the UK

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply:

Prefer a 2-in-1, and battery longevity plus low weight are essential.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely important as my commute can take up to 4 hours (total) and involves an hours commute on a bicycle.

Which OS do you require? Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? 13 - 14" preferable

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: I will be running data analysis software such as NVivo, reference management software including EndNote. I often have in excess 40 tabs open Chrome, plus Outlook, word and adobe reader open at the same time.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As I'm a researcher, I mainly use my laptop for reading and writing, so a good screen is a must. As I commute, weight, size and battery life are also really important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My budget is really broad and I have up to £1300 to spend. I don't want to spend that, but if the laptop is perfect, then I will.

I'm not sure if 256gb ssd is too small for a laptop nowadays? Most of my work is stored in the cloud so any advice would be appreciated.

I've narrowed it down to these laptops, but any suggestions welcome.

I'm just wondering if the lack of usb-c and thunderbolt ports is a concern?

I need to buy this in the next week so advice is desperately needed!!

Looking for a work laptop that's able to do light gaming between $300-800

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 08:10 PM PST

Basically I want a gaming laptop that's relatively sturdy and doesn't look like a 'gaming laptop', as I'll be using it for work. It needs to have an SSD, 8GB RAM, a comfortable keyboard for typing, and a decent enough GPU. The only demanding games I want to run are X Com 2 and GTA 5. What are my options?

I'm in Taiwan and laptops are pretty expensive here, so I'll probably import from the USA.

[USA $3000] Immediate need for workstation laptop

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 12:33 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is around $2500 to $3000. I have to finance whatever laptop I do get so I'm willing to up my budget.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm looking for the best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. My last laptop was a 7.5lbs Toshiba Qosmio and I carried that for 8 years in a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No preferred size but I want as good of color accuracy as I can get. I do color correction work and it's very important for me to get accurate color.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to do CAD, video editing, photo editing, and gaming. I want to run Blender, Davinci Resolve, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, etc. I want to play games. I'm most interested in being able to run VR titles.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Like I said, VR titles are a goal. I would love to run games like Beat Saber, The Lab, and other VR experiences. I'd like to be able to run games at fairly high settings. As long as it can hit 60 fps I'm good but I can deal with 30 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need a very good build quality. I'm not gentle with my tech (I know I should be) and I tend to need repairs. I need something that could sustain very regular, daily, constant use.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need something ASAP. My laptop just died this week and I'm desperate to replace it. I'm a freelancer and I need my laptop to work. I was thinking of getting a laptop but I might move very soon and I travel a lot and a desktop just doesn't fit my life right now. I need my next laptop to last me a while. My last laptop (a Toshiba Qosmio x875 lasted me roughly 8 years). I'm stingy and don't jump to upgrade. I'll pay a lot but I'll make sure I get my money worth. I was considering the ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo but I'm afraid I'm just getting drawn in by the dual screen and it's not really worth it. Their ProArt line looks great too. I appreciate any help.

    US [$200~] 15” Laptop

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 01:38 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: around $200-$300

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Long battery life is a must

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it pretty light and thin

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really going to use for gaming, might game stream from desktop

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Just a long battery life

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly need something light and very portable that I can web browse, watch movies and YouTube, and that's not a tablet hybrid because I hate mobile browsers, and would like to be able to install a handful of Windows programs.

Also, I can currently get 10% off at Walmart and have a $70 Amazon gift card that I could use to help bring a purchase into my price range.

[AUS $900] Decent battery life laptop for University plus light gaming

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:35 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Pretty firm at about $900AUD. Purchasing in Australia.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** No need for 2 in 1. Battery life at least 5 hours SOT to get through the day at uni. CPU: 7th gen or later i5 or i7 or maybe the new ryzen 5 and 7 CPUs, and decent enough graphics performance for some light-medium level gaming (not a huge priority though).

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Something lighter if possible but as you can see from my picks below I'm happy to forego this. (As long as it doesn't look like some insane mega-thicc alienware mOnster)

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I will have access to Windows 10 education for free from my uni.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Max 16 inches and happy to go smaller ;)

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'm not sure what games I'd like to play yet as i've never had a good enough pc to try it yet. But I would like the ability to play any non-AAA games at reasonable settings and get 60+ fps.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Will be doing a lot of note-taking so a good keyboard is preferred, as well as a usable trackpad for web-browsing and such (I'll use a mouse for any gaming). Touch screen and finger-print reader are not necessary for me.

I'm happy to buy refurbished and have somewhat narrowed down my picks to these two:

    https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/acer-aspire-vx5-591g-notebooks-intel-core-i7-1tb-256gb-ssd-16gb-ram-windows-10-nh-gm2sa-002-374299 $750AUD after $200 discount

    https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/asus-gl553ve-15-6-rog-gaming-laptop-core-i7-256gb-ssd-1tb-hdd-16gb-ram-gtx-1050-win-10-gl553ve-fy050t-392884 $900AUD after discount

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these or similar models and could share some pros/cons. And whether there's any reason to spend the extra $150 for the ASUS.

    Thanks so much!

Total budget and country of purchase: USA. Cheaper the better, max of $2000

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm leaning more to having good battery life when I'm not using it for gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Prefer large storage capabilities. Or be easily added

    • I have been strongly considering the Acer Helios 300 Laptops. I am undecided between the 2019 15.6" with the 1660/2060, and the 17.3" with the 2070. I was only interested in the 15.6" initially, but after seeing the 2070 8Gb card on the 17.3", i am curious if it is worth the jump. With these laptops, i will be adding a 2TB 2.5" drive for storage. Im looking for product reviews, and which of these would give me the best hardware to keep relevant in the coming couple of years. Also want to know if these are valid links to purchase.

These are the links for the two laptops i am looking at, and where i would purchase from once i've decided.

Total budget and country of purchase: USA, no more than 2500 USD but hopefully less.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs are most important here.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important, I prefer I lightweight laptop but I have no gripes with anything heavier.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just gaming, xcom 2 mainly and some modded older titles like Skyrim for when I'm not working.

The primary use of this laptop will be for various programming projects but I do plan on gaming on it quite a bit so I definitely want it to be able to do both as efficiently as is possible within my budget.

Gaming laptop $1500-2000 range, can't decide if i should get GTX 1080 or something RTX

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST

I am student who will be using this laptop for light coding and heavy gaming.

Some things i would like to have are as follows:

120Hz refresh rate. (Don't really care for 144hz but it ok) Ability to run AAA games at ultra 1080p comfortably. 16gb ram or more Hybrid storage or at least 2 M.2 drives. And thermal performance that's not straight from hell :)

Fan sound doesn't matter to me at all. But i would prefer a device from a reputable brand, And good build quality and string hinges (Aorus stabbed me in the back).

Help in suggesting a laptop from the Philippines

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:31 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: 30-43,000 PHP - Philippines (around 600-800 USD)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best graphics card possible at that price.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-17" and/or 144hz would be ideal but otherwise, it wouldn't really be a deal breaker.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Premier, Vegas, older AAA games (think 2010-2016).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? GTA V or The Witcher 3 should at least run at a decent FPS, 30 minimum. The higher, the better, of course, but I doubt I'll get it at a price I'm willing to pay.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable buildquality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? at least one 3.0 USB, sturdy and backlit keyboard

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If the laptop is a little over 40K, I would have to think thoroughly about it, but I can go as far as 45,000 PHP should the laptop be really worth it.

Looking for a high-end machine learning laptop

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:00 PM PST

My old laptop croaked yesterday, so I've been looking for a new one. I do machine learning research, so ideally I'd like something powerful enough to handle hardcore ML and deep learning tasks. A Linux machine would be preferable but isn't a necessity. I'm in the US and would be willing to pay up to $2000ish.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500, Cambodia
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. just best deal for $500
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Normal ones would be great
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing, Video editing, Android programming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I mean this is for editing and coding. Just light games
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I hate it when laptop built in keyboards sucks that I have to use other keyboard so definitely a good keyboard is a must.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've used PC all my life and never owned a laptop myself so be my guest

What's the best laptop for someone who's going to major in Computer Engineering and game GTA 5 at 30-60fps medium settings. I have looked into Dell G5 and G7 but they're heavy, fans are loud and battery life is not so great either. I need atleast 4-5hrs solid battery life to be used during lectures.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like it to be somewhat light and thin but I wouldnt want to sacrifice to much performance to get that. As long as its not bulky and clunky
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? 15 inches. I dont want a big laptop

Cheap, small, laptop capable of running VMs

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:12 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I don't have a specific budget per say, I just need the cheapest option that meets my other criteria. The max I'm able to spend is approximately $400 CAD, but I'm hoping to get something for cheaper. I'm totally cool with used/refurbished devices so long as they're functional. And obviously, I'm in Canada.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care for 2 in 1 form factor. Just need the best specifications for the money and ideally a decent battery life since I'll be taking it out with me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I want a relatively lightweight and thin laptop. I'm not expecting to get something super thin given my other criteria, I just don't want a thick 6 lbs laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I plan on installing Linux on this laptop. Not sure which distribution but I plan on sticking with something light on resources. Of course because of this, I don't want a laptop that's notorious for poor Linux compatibility.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm looking for a smaller laptop, so approximately 11.6" - 14.1" with 13.3" being the sweet spot.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Won't be editing or gaming, I will however need to run virtual machines. Keep in mind I plan on using lightweight distributions/desktop environments for both my host OS and any virtual operating systems. I know I'm asking for a lot, a sub $400 CAD laptop that can run VMs, but I'm hoping that if I stay light on all my resources as much as possible that it might actually work.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Aside from being able to run VMs, I prefer at least 1 USB 3.0 port, though it's not necessary. I'm also hoping to have at least 2 USB ports in total, 3.0 or not.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically I need a thinner, lighter alternative to an old Thinkpad. Thinkpads could run VMs and are dirt cheap, but they're far to thick and heavy for my use case. I considered a Chromebook since they're small and cheap but quickly realized they definitely can't run VMs, don't have enough practical storage, and (from what I've read) aren't easy to install Linux on with the newer models. As mentioned before, I'm okay with used or refurbished laptops so long as they function. Don't care for any cosmetic damage either. So if there's a specific laptop in mind that would fit in my price range IF bought used, feel free to mention it.
