Posted: 04 Feb 2020 02:16 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: £1300 and will be purchasing in the UK Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Prefer a 2-in-1, and battery longevity plus low weight are essential. How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely important as my commute can take up to 4 hours (total) and involves an hours commute on a bicycle. Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? 13 - 14" preferable Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: I will be running data analysis software such as NVivo, reference management software including EndNote. I often have in excess 40 tabs open Chrome, plus Outlook, word and adobe reader open at the same time. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As I'm a researcher, I mainly use my laptop for reading and writing, so a good screen is a must. As I commute, weight, size and battery life are also really important. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My budget is really broad and I have up to £1300 to spend. I don't want to spend that, but if the laptop is perfect, then I will. I'm not sure if 256gb ssd is too small for a laptop nowadays? Most of my work is stored in the cloud so any advice would be appreciated. I've narrowed it down to these laptops, but any suggestions welcome. I'm just wondering if the lack of usb-c and thunderbolt ports is a concern? I need to buy this in the next week so advice is desperately needed!! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a work laptop that's able to do light gaming between $300-800 Posted: 03 Feb 2020 08:10 PM PST Basically I want a gaming laptop that's relatively sturdy and doesn't look like a 'gaming laptop', as I'll be using it for work. It needs to have an SSD, 8GB RAM, a comfortable keyboard for typing, and a decent enough GPU. The only demanding games I want to run are X Com 2 and GTA 5. What are my options? I'm in Taiwan and laptops are pretty expensive here, so I'll probably import from the USA. [link] [comments] |

[AUS $900] Decent battery life laptop for University plus light gaming Posted: 03 Feb 2020 09:35 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Pretty firm at about $900AUD. Purchasing in Australia. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** No need for 2 in 1. Battery life at least 5 hours SOT to get through the day at uni. CPU: 7th gen or later i5 or i7 or maybe the new ryzen 5 and 7 CPUs, and decent enough graphics performance for some light-medium level gaming (not a huge priority though). * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Something lighter if possible but as you can see from my picks below I'm happy to forego this. (As long as it doesn't look like some insane mega-thicc alienware mOnster) * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I will have access to Windows 10 education for free from my uni. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Max 16 inches and happy to go smaller ;) * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'm not sure what games I'd like to play yet as i've never had a good enough pc to try it yet. But I would like the ability to play any non-AAA games at reasonable settings and get 60+ fps. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Will be doing a lot of note-taking so a good keyboard is preferred, as well as a usable trackpad for web-browsing and such (I'll use a mouse for any gaming). Touch screen and finger-print reader are not necessary for me. I'm happy to buy refurbished and have somewhat narrowed down my picks to these two: https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/acer-aspire-vx5-591g-notebooks-intel-core-i7-1tb-256gb-ssd-16gb-ram-windows-10-nh-gm2sa-002-374299 $750AUD after $200 discount https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/asus-gl553ve-15-6-rog-gaming-laptop-core-i7-256gb-ssd-1tb-hdd-16gb-ram-gtx-1050-win-10-gl553ve-fy050t-392884 $900AUD after discount Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these or similar models and could share some pros/cons. Gaming laptop $1500-2000 range, can't decide if i should get GTX 1080 or something RTX Posted: 03 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST I am student who will be using this laptop for light coding and heavy gaming. Some things i would like to have are as follows: 120Hz refresh rate.
