Formatting an external HDD for all OS Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:30 AM PST I bought an external HDD and the local computer shop formatted it to work with Mac and Windows, but not Linux. I have been thinking of switching to Linux (I am currently posting from a flash drive based Pop! OS) but I don't want to lose the files on my HDD. Is there a way of formatting the HDD so that Linux can use it while also maintaining the Windows and Mac formatting (and keeping the files)? All of the files are generic (mostly videos and PDFs). Worst case scenario is I wait for my external SSD (which I plan to clone my Windows OS onto) and save the files for Windows while wiping the hard drive and reformatting. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:31 PM PST When I try and download the Ubuntu LTS from the site, the only option is to save "ubuntu-18.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso". Is that going to be correct for an Intel system? [link] [comments] |
Backing up my whole Linux Mint installation Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:16 AM PST I tried to do my own research on that topic, but tbh I didn't manage to sort this question out. Imagine I installed Linux Mint, set it up the way I like it (installed a browser of choice, a few tweaking scripts, adjusted the theme, etc.). Is there a not-so-complicated way to make some kind of a boot image from it, so the next time I need to install Mint on the other computer (or reinstall it on my own), I wouldn't need to go through all these tedious steps again? I'm not sure if you call it a backup or some other way. I went to Google and found some backup tools like Systemback though I'm not sure that's exactly what I need. Could anybody please give me a piece of advice? What is the best way to solve my problem? I would appreciate any help! [link] [comments] |

Finding files is failing. Search for all files of certain type. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:43 AM PST Hello, I'm attempting to save all important files from a hard drive and can't for the life of me get it to work. I keep getting an error: find: invalid expression; you have used a binary operator '-o' with nothing before it. Here is the code:
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
FOSS purism: update the microcode or not? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:39 AM PST I was wondering this for quite some time. For example in Debian, I'm using FOSS-only software but I make an exception for "intel-microcode". This of course leads to enabling whole non-free and contrib repos, although you can at least prevent accidental install of any further non-free software by apt-pinning. So arguments for installing ucode updates:
And the downsides:
Trisquel, for example, has some discussions on their forums about this very issue and most users seem happy that ucode updates are NOT included there. So after all, it all comes down to preference? What do you think? [link] [comments] |
Linux Distros and focus... before you start ripping up everything Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:19 PM PST Many distrobutions have a different user in mind. They are the brainchild of individual perceptions in mind. What works best for the cautious and unaware doesn't work well for the knowledgeable and often adventurous user. With that in mind, you have to speak your mind in this reddit. The volumes of perception and wisdom is beyond fantastic. The only obstacle is our humanity for patience. Because much of humanity lives in these forums fighting our silicon battles. When you look at a distro from YouTube reviews and posts here, you take it all with a grain of salt. The wisdom shared is in fact a point of enthusiasm for the adventures you start. I have to say, the distro that works well in dual boot simplistic installation may not fit your ideals in taste and structure. Just getting started with Linux or simply coming back after years away, the technology has changed a lot in 20 years. Security has detracted from the simple beauty of what experience demonstrated in those early years. Take your time and decide who you are. Don't be afraid of defining that when looking at open distro's. The fine people here will guide you well or as best they can. They are just like you. Busy with their own lives and still care enough to reach out to strangers or dedicate large portions of their lives to create these labors of love. [link] [comments] |
What is df -h showing me and how do I know if my hdd is full? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:49 PM PST I'm trying to understand the output of the df -h command and how to know if my harddrive is full. I'm also wondering what the correct terminology is for these things, I'm confused on when something is a hard drive, a partition, filesystem, or a directory... When I run df -h I get something like: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on udev 975M 0 975M 100% /dev /dev/sda1 77G 20G 53G 28% / So if I run df -h / and it shows 28%, and df -h /dev shows 100%, that would mean I can't store any more data in /dev, but I can still store things elsewhere, right? So my hdd would not be considered full? What are / and /dev referred to as in this context? Mounts? Directories? A partition? Is /dev being at 100% usage the equivalent of a Windows C drive being full? [link] [comments] |
Old version of Ubuntu better for old hardware? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:22 AM PST Hi there My mom is currently in need of a computer, mainly for office work, and maybe a bit of YouTube. I have this old Pentium Dual Core desktop lying around, it's got 4gb 800mhz ddr2 ram, and a 550ti gpu. I've tried a number of different flavors of Ubuntu from Ubuntu itself, to Lubuntu, and even other distros based on Ubuntu like Elementary OS. All of them ran ok, but suffered a lot from lag when doing stuff like opening menus, watching videos, and browsing the web, not full on lag, more like stuttering here and there. All the operating systems I tried were based on Ubuntu 18.04. Is 18.04 too modern for this PC? Should I use an old version like 14.04? Or is there something that I am missing? I mean surely those specs are enough to at least run Lubuntu consistently. Kind regards. And thanks. Edit: Hdd died, maybe that was the problem. Gonna get a new one tomorrow, or an ssd. Migrating My Install To Bigger SSD With LUKS Partition Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:47 PM PST I recently got a larger SSD to expand my storage, and I've been trying to figure out how to migrate everything over to it for a while now, reading tutorials, searching for people who have done similar things, etc. Suffice it to say, little success. I first just tried DD if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb, and, when booting from the new drive, I was able to unlock the LUKS partition, but after it unlocked, I got a message that I had an invalid PCI ROM data signature. How can I migrate my OS and files, which are LUKS encrypted, over to another SSD and have a functional, bootable drive? What would be best practice? The first pic is of what the partition table looked like after I just DDed it (and expanded /dev/sdb2), and question about that: if the /dev/sdb2 partition has enough space, will the luks partition, /dev/sdb5, be able to grow to the new limit? I read somewhere luks partitions don't encode their size. How far is the DD method of just cloning the disk from best practice? The second pic is the disk I'm trying to migrate from. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:41 PM PST I downloaded the latest iso of Linux mint a couple of days ago, I replaced it with my windows 10 OS today. It installed with no problems I restarted my computer and removed the USB, it booted up fine then I figured I better let the update manager work it's magic. It started installing updates then my computer random restarted, so I figured that was a normal process, it booted up fine again I started doing stuff and I had to restart the update manager, then my computer restarted an second time but now it won't even boot into the OS. Dual booting windows and Linux help me Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:30 PM PST Okay so straight up I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff but I am trying to teach myself. I want to dualboot windows and Linux on my laptop but I'm struggling to even install mint from the boot drive My laptop specs are as follows: Acer Nitro 5 Intel core i5-8300H 2.30GHz CPU 8GB RAM 256GB SSD GTX 1050 I've used universal usb installer & the mint 19.3.iso file to make a boot drive.. I think I've made a 63gb partition as my disk manager says there is that much unallocated I try booting from the drive and it either refuses to boot or just gives me a black screen for about 10 mins before turning off I have also had to change the grub64x.efi file to mmx64.efi file as that made it work temporarily I have also run into issues whilst trying to install form a live boot of mint 18 where by when I get to the partition stage of installation it tells me that the installers crashed Again I am a complete novice at this and only vaguely understand what I'm doing Any advice would be much appreciated as I've been trying to make this work for a day and a half now.. If anyone could help guide me through the process that would be even more appreciated.. Thanks in advance Kind regards Skol [link] [comments] |
Manjaro KDE error on installation. Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:29 PM PST Hello, I am trying to install Manjaro on a laptop but when it starts the installation it gives me the following error (I am translating it): Fail to install. Wrong configuration of unsquash. The origin system aarchhive "/run/miso/bootmnt/manjaro/x86_64/rotfs.sfs" doesn't exist. This error always come after one of the removable media suddenly disconect (which I believe to be the SSD) but it comes back riight after. Note: sorry if there iis any wrong word, my keyboard is a shit, need a new one urgent, got 15mins to make this post. Edit: I've installed Kubuntu to test and the installation went normal and the removable media is indeed the SSD for some reason. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:38 AM PST Hi All, I have recently installed Ubuntu 19.10 on my 2011 Macbook Pro. This is my first venture into Linux and I'm loving it. Unfortunately, I've been having network issues where after a period of time my network will drop out and the only thing that temporarily resolves it is a reboot. I've been looking on some forums and tried some fixes but I've not been successful. I've been advised that there can often be issues with Linux and the Broadcom network adapters that the Macbook uses. I don't fully know where I stand with this issue in order to pinpoint exactly what is wrong, if it were windows I would look to uninstall and reinstall the network adapter but I don't believe it's that simple on Linux. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful, however, my main question was is there a Linux distro that works better with the Mac hardware? I do really like Linux and I planned on finding my feet with Ubuntu then trying some other ones out as I learn more about it. I have an interest in privacy too. I may be quite hopeful here but I was thinking if there was another distro that if I did a fresh reinstall it could potentially resolve my issue? If the distro was aimed at the more privacy-minded users that would be a bonus. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, [link] [comments] |
Installing Ubuntu on FDE drive? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:18 PM PST Is there anything procedurally different about installing a new OS (Ubuntu 18.04) on a drive in which another OS (Fedora 30) is already installed with full disk encryption, or is it just a straight forward install if overwriting previous OS? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:46 AM PST Hello, I've a 320gb hdd, recently was dual boot windows 10 and Mint. Now just mint after Windows 10 partitions have been deleted using Gparted. I've now got 'holes' in my disk space, where Windows was and unallocated is now, which I'd like to merge into the ext 4 partition. How can i move both unallocated chunks of space from where they are now, to after the 234gb partition so i can combine them into that ext 4 partition. I cant seem to find a way to move the space to where i need it. I have a live gpaprted bootable usb drive. The Gparted information, from left to right, is as follows:

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:52 AM PST Hey everyone, Does anyone know how I could go about "generating" kernel headers for my kernel? I know that most 3rd party distros don't have support for the new Raspberry, but it's preventing me from using anything other than Raspbian for everything. The headers that get created on other OS's are always v7+ (Pi 3B+) instead of v7l+ (Pi 4). This leads to things I try to make and install not working, such as adapter installation. So, does anyone have any suggestions? Any and all help would be appreciated. Otherwise I'm gonna have to wait until these distros add support for the Pi4. Edit: Kernel is 4.19.93-Re4son-v7l+ (using 32 bit for compatibility but the same thing happens on 64 bit v8l+) [link] [comments] |
elementaryOS installation crashes at partition choice Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:47 AM PST Hey all, I'm trying to install elementary OS on a separate partition on my to dual boot it with Windows 10 on my HP Laptop 15-da0xxx. I've used Rufus to mount the ISO on a USB drive, but the installation gets as far as the "choose a partition screen", but when I press the +, -, or change buttons I get the below error and the installer crashes. I've searched all over, including the elementary OS sub/stack exchange, and other forums and can't find a solution - I'm sorry if this has been asked a thousand times before, but it's really melting my brain. I've tried it with Legacy Boot/Secure Boot/Fast Boot/Hibernation on and off, to no avail. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
