    Simple Questions - February 01, 2020

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

About the tightest fit of components in this case since I wanted a bottom intake for the GPU and a full sized card. Looking to build a second one and improve on some things including the MB mounting, IO shield compatibility, front panel buttons. Still need to add an LED to the power button and possibly the xbox sound on startup with a speaker.

Just upgraded from Wraith Stealth to Noctua NH-U12S on Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:31 AM PST

Wow, what a difference. The stock cooler was driving me mental with how loud it was. It sounded like there was a vacuum cleaner in my room turning on and off while gaming. I stress tested my system just now and max temp on the cpu was 61.8 C and it was more or less silent. Idle is around 30 C. Previously, idle was around 45 and during load would get up to 80ish. Just thought I would share my experience in case anyone else was unhappy with the wraith cooler that comes bundled with the new r5 3600.

At what point does it start to become worth it to upgrade an rx580 8gb or similar GPU?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:25 AM PST

Like, upgrading to a 1070 is not a big performance gain to pay for. At what point does it really start to pay off?

Its also worth noting i have the worst RX580 model (MSI ARMOR), its loud, hot, and doesnt clock well. Its also sagging enough where it wont screw into the side of my case, albeit also a shitty case lol.

Currently at 1080p 144hz competitive gaming but also play stuff like CodMW , Project cars, and apex

    Finished Dual Computer Build

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:52 AM PST

    Hello,

Finally finished my dual PC build and thought id share the end result. This is my first solo build.

    Case http://www.phanteks.com/Enthoo-719.html

    PC 1 - Gaming PC/Programming PC

Motherboard - ASUS TUF H370-PRO Gaming

    Ram - 32gig - Corsair Vengeance 16gig DDR4 3000mhz

    Processor - Intel Core i7-8700

Video Card - Gigabyte RTX 2070

    Drive 1 - Evo 970 m2.0 1TB (OS and Programming)

    Drive 2 - Inland Premium 2TB M.2 ( Games and shit)

    PC 2 - Streaming/Multimedia/PlexServer/Rendering PC

Motherboard - Gigabyte B450 I Aorus Pro WIFI

    Ram - G.Skll Ripjaws 16GB 3200

Processor - Ryzen 5 3400G (wanted integrated graphics)

    Video Card - None

    Drive1 - Inland Premium 512g m.2 (OS)

    Drive2 - Western Digital 4TB (Plex/Multimedia/YoutubeVideos)

    Drive3 - Western Digital 4TB (Plex/Multimedia/YoutubeVideos)

*Havent made the plex server a raid yet but might in the future*

Shared Power Supply - Phanteks 80+ Platinum dual system 1200W

    Monitors Setup (Left to right)

Monitor 1 - PC 2, standard 1080 acer. Nothing special

    Monitor 2 - PC 1, Acer Predator 34-Inch curved ultrawide (1440) Gsync

    Monitor 3 - PC 1, Acer 75hz 1440p

Dual System Software - for ease i found Synergy. Which is a software where i can seemlessly move my mouse and keyboard between two systems without having to use a physical KVM. One PC is the hose and other is the client and it talks to each other. Found little to no issues with the software. Pretty seemless.

Control F1 takes me to PC2

Control F2 takes me to PC1

    Soundbar - Razer leviathan

i picked this because i could use bluetooth for one system and AUX for another. So all i have to do is press a button to swap between the two.

Fans are connected gaming PC via USB 2.0 and 2 commander pros daisy chained. Two lighting nodes are also connected to these commander pros.

I hope you guys are still willing to check newbies on their proposed builds

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:34 PM PST

This is a build I am hoping to do as my first PC. The graphics card is not the one listed but its as close as PC Part Picker had. The one i found was a Gigabyte GeForce 1660 DirectX 6GB. Super green to this so i'm hoping that one will work. And PC part picker didn't have the case I want which is the darkflash Water Square 5 Black ATX Mid-Tower. Please feel free to let me know if you see any issues with compatibility or if you have any suggestions. I mostly will be using it for light gaming. No AAA games that i can think of. Maybe a little Fortnite but mostly things like Civ 5 or Farm Sim or other non-graphics intensive games.

Edit: Also I was wanting to put a version of Linux on this. What are peoples opinions on doing Linux as their operating system on their builds.

    GTX 1660TI to RTX 2080TI

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:12 PM PST

Hey guys my current specs are the newest i7 9700k an msi pro carbon ac motherboard 16GB of msi vengeance 3200 RAM 1TB ssd Samsung evo plus NVMe 1TB hard drive.

    Monitors are a dell 1440p 144hz 1ms and a dell/Alienware 1080p 240hz 1ms

This probably could go under a discussion thread but my initial question is should I upgrade to the 2080ti and will i bottleneck it with my current specs? Also should I just wait till the new cards come out that are rumored to be way more powerful?

PC shutdown mid game and won't boot until 10 minutes later. No power outages

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:27 AM PST

So I had this Ryzen 3900X build since July and recently the power button no longer worked for a good 10 minutes after shutdown during gaming. Motherboard lights are still on though, Asus X570 Crosshair VIII Hero

Temps during gaming are 70c on both CPU and GPU, 35c on VRM. I have about 8 fans for airflow and don't use liquid cooling.

PSU is Seasonic 850W Gold Focus Plus

What caused the power buttons (mobo and case) to stop working? And is it a bad sign of CPU becoming faulty?

    Is this build list ok?

About to spend the money, but I'm hesitant because I'm not entirely certain I have the right stuff.

Looking to use this build for gaming, graphic design, and video editing while using 3 screens, only one 1440 144 refresh rate. Looking to upgrade this build in 5-7 years. Hoping to do a custom water loop when I have the money as well.

    Thoughts?

    Help installing windows 10

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:51 PM PST

    Hey there,

I'm a first-time builder and user of a PC and am having a hard time getting an OS on my machine. Unfortunately I don't have access to another pc, so I have to use my MacBook to download the IOS to a USB and install that way, but am having no luck no matter how I get the files on the USB. I've tried the boot camp method, simple drag and drop, using UNetbootin, etc. all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor every time. Any suggestions on how to help? Feels like I'm banging my head against a wall ha.

A few specs just in case: Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Pro4s (version P7.40) CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 RAM: 2 8gig DDR4-2133 Storage: Samsung SSD 860 evo 1T

    24 inch 1440p 144hz monitor or 27 inch 1440p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:45 PM PST

Out of all the components I've looked for for my first pc and gaming setup I've spent the most time looking for a good monitor, after countless hours I narrowed it down to two monitors. They are both 1440p and 144hz with 1ms response time and FreeSync, but one is 24 inch and the other is 27 inch. The 24 inch monitor is £35 ($46) cheaper than the 27 inch monitor but I'm afraid that 24 inches for a monitor used for gaming is to small, I seen that because the 24 inch monitor is 1440p it has more pixel density but the other monitor is bigger and I also heard bigger is better in terms of gaming monitors. I want to know what you guys think I should get.(thanks guys!)

    HS gaming team pc builds?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:07 PM PST

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HQK9tp I put this together, can anyone confirm that this is a valid build? Its for my hs team so we dont have much budget.

My main concern is that 8gb ram wont be enough.

48 GB or 64 GB RAM?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:13 PM PST

    Main concern is the RAM.

    Current upgrades planned here

My max upgrade budget is $500 and plan on upgrading mid year, or $1000 if its at the end of 2020/Jan 2021. That being said, I'm planning on upgrading to an rtx card as well if you have any suggestions for that too.

Yeah, so I originally had 32 gb of ram and was sitting on 24 gb for a while (hardware issues, void of warranty) which is really annoying. Anyways, would it be justifiable to upgrade to just get 2x16 gb sticks to fill the dimm slots or should I give my 2x8 GB sticks to my friend and just send it with 64 GB? I need the RAM for gathering large footage for video editing and engineering software (that part would be overkill).

    TIA

Does this motherboard work with the Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:08 PM PST

    Hello,

I am putting together a build and was wondering if a MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max motherboard would work with the Ryzen 5 3600.

I ask this question as on pcpartpicker it says there could be a incompatibility.

    All responses are greatly appreciated.

I have an 011 Dynamic XL and am wondering if I can connect 9 fans to the commander pro using splitters?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:55 PM PST

I emailed Corsair and they said using more than 6 fans can cause the commander pro to short out from using too much power. Is that true?

Should i upgrade my current PC, buy a new one or keep what i have now?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:09 AM PST

Hello r/buildapc I have a gaming PC i bought about 3 years ago, these are my specs:

    Gtx970 4ram

    Intel i5 4440 3.1ghz

    B85M-D2V

    16GB RAM

I feel like my current rig has gotten a bit outdated for the newest games, especially when it comes to my cpu

My main goal is to be able to play all the new games (like rdr2 and the upcoming cyberpunk 2077) at a somewhat decent graphics and fps rating (im not expecting 100+ fps at ultra settings)

What do you guys think i should do? I dont wanna spend too much money, however i feel like my current pc isnt good enough for the upcoming next gen games
