Why so many running PROCESSES? What happens to laptops and can it be fixed?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:39 AM PST

So, as every laptop it was running fine in the beginning. I began gaming and after a few month, lag. A friend said, "Why don't you close a few processes" and proceeded in closing a few. I noticed after awhile that there seemed to be more svchost.exe and other items that appeared. Now I can't even listen to YouTube or run anything else while playing my game when I used to do so. At times System Idle or something else will make DISK USE, CPU USE or MEMORY USE for to 100%.

Are these temps normal on a gaming laptop?

Are these temps normal on a gaming laptop?

Okay so I bough the ROG Zephyrus S GX701 about a month ago and it is a beast, super happy with it. However I'm new to the laptop world so I'm used to see much lower temperatures. I already undervolted, lifted the back and even bought a cooling pad (which was kind of dumb due to laptop's design LMAO). No matter what, I'm reaching the conclusion that the computer is designed to work under this temps because I can't do anything to control fans other than put them to 100%, can't draw the fan curves, so if it they were made like this should be for a good reason. I'm thinking repasting wouldn't make that much of a difference if I can't do anything about those fans.

I'm just a bit worried because I have the perception that this PC will last like 6 months working like that, but that's just me coming from the desktop world. Should note that even like this I'm not seeing thermal throttling on Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and also, this temperatures are under heavy load, on idle it goes down to 45º. So I wanna know your thoughts and concerns. I use this for gaming yes, but mostly for video editing and motion graphics design. I just want someone to tell me "It's fine, it won't die soon because it is made to work like that".

Peak temperatures while playing Apex Legends. Average temperature should be around 86º.

    Helios 300 or Asus Tuf?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:30 PM PST

In the market to replace my current laptop. Id rather do it sooner rather than later as my current laptop is on its last legs . Wanted to get opinions on these as they seem to be pretty popular builds

    https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-IPS-Type-R7-3750H-GeForce-FX505DV-PB74/dp/B07SXTDL1S/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=RTX+2060+Laptop&qid=1580590789&sr=8-4

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QXLFLXT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Im not the most spec literate person. The Asus is about 20 bucks more than the Helios and has a RTX 2060 and more ssd space. Not sure how the processors compare to each other.

Any feedback or opinions are appreciated.

    ASUS Vivobook Pro 15

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:06 PM PST

Hi guys, I have a ASUS Vivobook Pro 15, with i5 7300HQ, nVIDIA GTX 1050 4GB and 12GB of ram. When playing games on this laptop(Farming Simulator 19-free on Epic Games btw, Skyrim, CSGO etc.) both my cpu and gpu temps max out at 80 degrees celsius, but never higher than 80(in fact only in FS19 I get to 80 degrees-worst case scenario, in other games it reaches 75 degrees max). I want to know, are these temps normal? I asked ASUS the same questions and they said that everything under 90 degrees is normal, but I want to know what you think.

Also MSI Afterburner/HWMonitor shows that at 79-80 degrees I get something called Temp limit, but my frequency stays the same and I never got FPS drops.

The cpu is undervolted, I use a cooling pad and the laptop was cleaned of dust a few months ago.

Buy from a brick-and-mortar store (like bestbuy) or online at amazon?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:32 PM PST

I was considering buying a NEW laptop for personal use. Was considering buying online from Amazon as I think prices for some models may be lower on amazon (true?), but Returns can be an issue if one doesn't like the laptop.

can one return at amazon without any penalty/fee after trying out?

    Can’t load into Windows

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:18 PM PST

When I boot my laptop up, for some reason, I can't get into Windows. It just displays the MSI logo and then a spinning circle icon. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue because I can boot into safe mode just fine every time, yet this issue has persisted across a clean install of Windows. When I dig through Event Viewer, I don't see anything that I think is relevant.

However, what's throwing me off is that I only have this issue some of the time. Is it just that I'm not waiting long enough for Windows to load up (I wait at least 10-15 seconds before force rebooting my laptop)? I do have an NVME SSD, so this shouldn't be an issue, but who knows.

Changing M.2 SATA SSD to 2.5" SATA

    Hi guys!

I bought a new 2.5" SATA SSD for my laptop that has currently an M.2 SATA (shown below) with converter. How can I install my new SSD (regular 2.5") into the laptop?

I bought this because I didn't know that it has an M.2 in it until disassembling it btw :/

    Spectre x360 13 OLED vs Matebook x pro 2018 vs Lenovo C940

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:29 AM PST

Please could anyone give an advice for buying new laptop?

I am looking for compact and powerful device, which I will mostly use for work, photo editing and basic daily stuff.

    Must:

    - 13"-14" touchscreen (not necessarily convertible)

    - good design

    - good battery life

    - CPU i7 (prefer 10th gen)

    - GPU at least Intel Iris Plus or MX150

    - RAM 16GB

    - SSD 512GB+

    - thunderbolt 3

    - possibility of charging with powerbank

    Would be great:

    - good build quality

    - small size (thin bezels)

    - 3K-4K display

    - aspect ratio 16:10 / 3:2

I am looking for responsible device, which meets all (or most of) my criteria. My budget is 1700EUR. I am from Czech Republic and prices of electronics are pretty good here when comparing them to rest of Europe so basically I can afford anything what is under 2k EUR in most European countries.

    My favorites:

HP Spectre X360 13, i7 10th gen ,16GB, 4K OLED, 1TB (late 2019) - This is my number one by far. I fell in love with its design, 4K OLED and battery life also seems to be very good. Downsides: I am not sure if build quality is okay and also already heard about problems with display and touchpad. And it is 16:9

Lenovo Yoga C940 14, i7 10th gen, 16GB, 4K, 1TB- This device seems to be perfect- great build quality, slot for pen plus 14" screen would be even better. I have not heard about much problems with this device. Downsides: bigger size. Do not like its design as much as other devices on list and it is also 16:9

Matebook X PRO 2018 (i7 8th gen, 16GB, 512GB, MX150)- Before previous devices were raleased, I was sure I want this one. Would love to have 3:2 aspect ratio and I like the design. Vast majority of owners love it. But does it still worth in 2020 when I can get newer devices with newer CPU? Is Huawei support really so bad?

I feel like my brain would go immidiately for C940 but my heart want HP Spectre. Or should I get Huawei? Or even other device?

As for HP, I think I could live with 16:9 but I am worried about build quality and other mentioned problems

I did not mention new Dell XPS 13, which is 16:10. But in comparable configuration is out of my budget. And after my experience with XPS 9575 (freezing touchpad, WiFi issues, etc.) would not take it nor for 1500EUR.

I will be happy for any advice!

    Thanks a lot!

    Laptop -1mWh meaning?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 10:28 AM PST

I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon Laptop, and today while using the laptop it suddenly blacked out. I thought it was maybe out of charge and put in on charge, but when I turned on my system it keeps saying 100% charged with an X symbol on it.

I ran a battery report and it says -1 mWh. The laptop is not even 2 months old.

Can anyone provide an idea about what this means? Should I get my battery replaced?

Severe power throttling on my Acer Aspire 5 A514-52G

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 09:50 AM PST

My Acer Aspire possesses the muscle to play most games decently and it does so, while on battery, but the moment I plug it in to a charging source my games start to throttle severely. I have tried Intel XTU but it was of no use. Does anyone have any solutions?

Does anyone know when the 2020 Dell XPS 13.4" laptops will be available in stores?

I can only find them online but want to look at them first. Best Buy and the usual suspects only have the 2019 models right now, but all the review websites say they are available as of early January.

Spectre x360 Ready to Ship vs. Customized

    Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:17 AM PST

So I'm looking at getting a Spectre 360 because they have a pretty good discount program for Mil and I'm just overwhelmed with choices. I want to be able to do usual surfing, watching, and other home use, with some hobbiest photo editing and maybe some gaming if it's possible.

What's really different and will I notice much of a difference in performance, longevity, and battery life?

Should I be looking at something else entirely? The custombuild is $1527 and the ready to ship is $1415.
