My laptop is getting really hot with normal tasks

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:04 PM PST

Hello. I have a Dell E5450 laptop. It seems to get hot with basic tasks such as watching Youtube videos. I already blew out the fan with compressed air and that seemed to have done nothing noticeable. I asked my friend since he has a similar laptop (Dell 5480) and he said he hasn't had this problem before . Any ideas on how to fix this?

I know this is a stupid question, but what laptop do I have? My dad gave it to me a few years ago so i wasn’t told. The tag says Inspiron 15 but on amazon the Inspiron 15 is a gaming laptop and mine isn’t. Im buying a new laptop in the summer and wanted to compare it to this (this laptop is bad btw)

Lenovo P1 vs Gigabyte AERO. Which one to choose?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:57 PM PST

Trying to decide. Will use it for Architecture (drafting CAD, Revit and Rendering Rhino + Vray) plus editing photos and occasionally video. Need good screen. Both are around $1600 (used) Specs:

    Gigabyte AERO 15.6" OLED, i7-9750H, 16GB RAM 512GB SSD, RTX 2060

    ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 Workstation 4K IPS i7-9750H, T2000,32G RAM

Its a game between which graphic card would work better and additional ram. Advice?

    Question: 15 inch Cons

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:14 PM PST

Hey. I'm planning getting a 15 inch laptop, and was wondering is the weight issue really a big thing to be wary of?

My major is Biochem, so I know I'll enjoy the larger screen, but was hearing from BestBuy employees that I should really consider whether or not I would like the weight. The one I've been looking at is 4.53 lbs about 1.3 kg.

I am considerably short at 5 feet. Should I just consider getting a 13 inch and a monitor?

Does anyone know if the hp 15 comes with 2x2gb sticks or 4x1gb sticks?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:10 PM PST

    Which one should I get?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 11:28 AM PST

Need some help deciding what is the better buy. Both have downsides and plus’s. Mostly be playing FPS shooters like battlefield 1 & 5 or cod. Will not be my main station, just for when I go to cottage during the summers. First gaming laptop’s I’m considering so kinda new to me

My experience with my Alienware m15 & Dell tech support

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:37 AM PST

My experience with my Alienware m15 & Dell tech support

TLDR: After four months of headaches with my Alienware m15, the Customer Service team upgraded me to a much better system at no cost to me. (Original system on the left, replacement on the right)

    Long Version:

Since November 2019, the following issues have gone wrong with the system I purchased:

    1. The LCD Display was found defective and replaced
    2. The onsite tech found a random screw floating around inside the laptop
    3. The hard drive was found defective and replaced
    4. The speakers were found defective and replaced
    5. The LCD Display was found defective and replaced (again)
    6. The motherboard was found defective and replaced
    7. The offsite repair center installed the wrong LCD on my laptop while they were fixing it. (Grey instead of Red)
    8. When they did send a replacement Red LCD directly to me, the onsite tech installed it and found it to be defective (again x2)
    9. The NEW motherboard was found defective, a new replacement was not available for four more months.

It must have been the four-month wait for the new motherboard that put tech services over the edge. They finally offered to replace my system with a better one. The one they offered had more RAM and a faster refresh rate on the LCD. I managed to find an even better model for my needs on the Dell Outlet website and requested that one instead. Dell agreed, after manager approval. Picture added. The new system also has a 6-cell battery instead of a 4-cell, and better wifi controller. Also, they gave me a $125 store credit to use on the Dell website, which I used to purchase another 1TB SSD.

The situation with the laptop sucked, yes. But the support team was damn-near perfect in how they handled me. 5 stars across the board. If you didn't buy the extended support package, DO IT!

    Guidance Please - T430 vs P53 Lenovo

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:24 AM PST

I will get the minimum specs and add RAM and hard drives myself to cut cost.

    I will get the i9-9880H, RTX4000, 8gb RAM, 256 hard drive and 4k screen (non-oled)

I will then updgrade two 64gb RAM with two sticks of ram from Amazon and 1TB NVm from Amazon (samsung)

    thoughts ?

I am replacing my beloved T430 (i7-3840QM, 16gb RAM, 1TB SSD and 1080 ips screen I replaced some time back).

    I would sorely miss my T430 :-(

But I need more Power and RAM !

I hope the P53 would be as portable as the T430 and durable and reliable which is key !!!!!!

I would be using the laptop for Data Analytics, Programming, ML and some DL but I want to fit lots of data in the laptop and not worry about running out of RAM and super fast RAM and NMme.

Or maybe I don't need a new laptop and I should just be happy with my T430

    Battery draining too fast

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:04 AM PST

My laptop used to be plugged in (to the charger) almost all the time, and I slowly noticed that whenever I unplug my laptop from the charger it started to lose its battery faster. until now to the point that it shuts down 5 seconds after unplugging it from the charger.

is there any way to fix that problem?

    thanks!

    Which should I buy?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 08:52 AM PST

I've been searching for used laptops, but I have three general options at the around 400 usd price point. I was looking at the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Pro (2017), and the Surface Laptop first gen. Which of these should I get if I'm looking for a decently fast school laptop with pretty decent battery life? If you have other suggestions as well, I'm open for different laptops., but I'd prefer 8 or 16 gigabytes of ram and at least 256 gbs of storage (and I'd like a touchscreen). Thanks for any help that's given!
