I don't like Macs... Can anyone convince me why I should get a PC for music production?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 09:51 PM PST

I've used Windows my whole life, I like it alright and I know where everything is and how to use it pretty fine although I'm not intuitively computer savvy. I need a new laptop for music production using Ableton Live 10 that will hopefully last me 5+ years. In the US and $3,000 is my upper limit so full spec MacBook Pro is within my budget and I know they're great for music producing but I don't want to make the switch to Mac unless if it's really the best and only option.

My biggest hitch that's making me think a Mac is necessary is that it's VERY important to me to be able to unplug from my audio interface and monitors at my desk and just grab my laptop, some headphones and a midi controller and work and write stuff wherever without having to lug around an interface and all the cables and junk. I've heard that Mac can do this just fine with very little latency because of Core Audio but my problem with my old laptop was I could either use MME realtek drivers and get unusable latency when playing software instruments on my midi controller or I could use ASIO4ALL and not be able to use audio from any other apps than Ableton at once and not be able to control the volume at all (really annoying, didn't work too well) or I could unplug all my stuff from my audio interface and lug that around too.

Are there any good Windows laptop sound cards that I can install (or that come with the laptop) into the laptop itself that can use ASIO for low latency? In general is there a Windows laptop (preferably a gaming laptop) that has the sound capabilities to do what Macs seem to be able to do?

15 inches is the smallest I'd go for a screen, preferably 16 or 17. I need it to be high end enough that it won't be outdated in the next 5 or so years, any extras like a good graphics card for gaming are just bonuses to me but strong CPU and at least 16 gigs of RAM and 256gb SSD for music producing projects are most important.

Looking for a strong gaming laptop $700

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 08:43 PM PST

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life or anything else doesnt matter to much to me as it will mainly be plugged in but want best specs and storage.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly offline games like Total wars Civ Strongholds Minecraft Skyrim

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard and looking for something with at least 1tb of storage. I'm leaving country and wont have wifi.

Need help deciding if I should get the MSI GS65

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:29 AM PST

I'm looking for a gaming laptop to use as a daily driver pretty much, because I spend a lot of time not at home, and it's becoming a chore to take the PS4 with me. My budget is around $1700, but I'm not from the USA, so when buying on Amazon or Newegg for example, the laptop has to cost $1300 because the shipping and fees cost around $400.

I think I'll go with the MSI GS65 Stealth (i7 8th gen, RTX 2060, 16GB Ram) because it's thin and light (relatively) and has a decent battery (more than 4 hours of browsing the web is good for me). It also has Thunderbolt which can come in handy when docking it and using it as a desktop. (I'm fine with undervolting and potentially applying liquid metal)

Is there a better laptop in this price range with such performance, thickness and weight? (Thunderbolt is a huge plus, but not a deal breaker)

tl;dr: Want to get the MSI GS65 but just want to know that I'm not making a mistake before spending $1700.

    Thank you so much.

What's the cheapest laptop I can buy that supports External GPU?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 01:27 AM PST

I need a light laptop for v basic use that has decent battery. No real preferences tbh, except that I'd want to connect an External GPU to it. Performance is not really an issue, I'd only play indie games and v low requirement games since I mostly game on PS4, and the indie games on PS4 are v expensive compared to steam where I live.

I've narrowed down my choices. Looking for advice as to which should be my final pick. (Asus vs Acer vs MSI)

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 07:46 AM PST

After months of searching and comparing different laptops, I've narrowed down my choices to 3 different laptops. I haven't bought a laptop in almost a decade, just because I can't really afford to buy one regularly, so I was hoping to get guidance on which among the 3 below would be the best to spend money on.

I'm choosing among the following laptops and specs:

Main purpose is to replace my current machine, so I'm looking for one that can be my daily driver for the long run.

Common tasks I'll do with it include my online teaching job where I usually have to run video calls on Skype, do word processing on Notepad, and browse anywhere between 6-12 tabs on Google Chrome all at the same time. And I'm also working on transitioning to become a software engineer, so I will be learning coding on it in the near future.

Other than that, I use Photoshop every now and then for some light photo editing, and I play League of Legends a few times a month with my pals. I would also enjoy using it to emulate some Nintendo GBA, DS, and 3DS games if it's not too much of a stretch.

Other things I value include, clear webcam, decent keyboard, and portability.

I'd love to hear what people on this sub would pick as the best choice. Thanks!

Looking for a good laptop to play video games on.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:59 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

The USA and my budget are around 600 to 700.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I would like to have good battery life and good resolution.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not really too important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    just video gaming for now

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The only game I really want to play is the final fantasy 14 MMO. Other than that, I already have my own list of what I am going to get.

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

definitely reliable build quality and a good keyboard.

My current laptop isn't really that strong. It can barely run games like undertale. That's how bad it is. I want to get more into pc gaming and I'm going to need a stronger laptop. All I ask is that any laptops suggested will be good to use. Thank you in advance.

    [Acer] Swift 3 vs Aspire E 5

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 09:12 PM PST

Hello! I've narrowed down my options to these two models. I'll be paying the same amount for either of them and they seem to have the same specs on paper as well.

    They both have 12GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 256GB SSD, a 2GB graphics card and a 15.6" screen.

I'd really like to get one of these two because the local store has a crazy offer where they're both roughly $250 equivalent. It does come with a warranty, Office etc.

Which of the two would you recommend? Thank you!

Edit - Forgot to add, I'm a student and will primarily be using it for work and very light gaming (eg SWTOR).

Looking for a quiet laptop that I can use to watch Netflix in bed and not worry about it overheating. Budget is 900 USD

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 10:51 PM PST

I will mainly be using this laptop for web development and learning new programming languages. I will need something that can handle multitasking. For example I will be having multiple programs open and I will be switching back and forth fast.

I also want something I can watch Netflix on while I'm in bed.

The issue I have is my room has absolutely bad WiFi. I have to use an Ethernet cable if I want to stream stuff reliably. So now my laptop needs an Ethernet port or can accept gigabit Ethernet adapters. I've read some laptops don't handle Ethernet well. This is where I'm stuck really.

As for gaming, I was thinking it's best to have this machine be totally dedicated to work and streaming videos, movies, watching live streams and I'll get an Xbox one x for gaming.

    Thanks

Budget: £500-£700 ($700-$900) OS: windows Ports: HDMI, USB A, USB C, headphone jack, Ethernet port Storage: 256+ GB Weight and thinness: unimportant Country: UK

Not all of these are necessary just features that would be preferable. Looking for something that is quite versatile and reliable, that I can do a range of things on e.g. photo editing (light room) or as a long shot some gaming (not very important). Would like a nice high quality screen but not too bothered about size and good keyboard. Any suggestions are welcome. If any laptops match but are out with budget please still do suggest. Thank you.

Ultrabook Style Laptop that can play some semi light games???

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 09:22 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA, under $1000

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** good or decent battery

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'd prefer something similar to an ultrabook

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-15' preferably, could be convinced for 17"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** just web browsing/watching shows. some gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** League of Legends, Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online, Fortnite, PUBG, Overwatch, Apex Legends. Typical eSports style games. Just want decent FPS (would like around 60, understand on some of the shooters could be lower)

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I've heard the glass touchpads with windows precision are cool, but i don't really have a preference. Would like a halfway decent keyboard

Basically i would like a non gamery looking laptop that is portable. Every now and then at a buddies place or something I could play some LoL or Overwatch or something. I started to think about smaller form factor laptops after i saw an old review of an Ultrabook (ASUS Zenbook 13) that seemed to have decent FPS at medium graphics (and had not stuttered from thermals). Since that one is older I was trying to see if there are any current laptops that don't cost an arm and a leg that fit that same type of mold. The one i keep seeing when i google is RazerBlade Stealth but it is a little too expensive for me to drop that much money without trying it. This will be my first laptop in awhile. I have a PC that I built, i just want some additional portability and semi light gaming.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Amazing Battery. Please no 2 in 1 form factors. Also none of these 2nd screening track pad laptops...

How important is weight and thinness to you? Very this laptop will travel with me daily. I will have to carry a 2nd laptop which is a thinkpad t470 for work.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Under 15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I need it to run excel, tableu, SQL and light design work on Photoshop and illustrstor.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light gaming but not a need as I have a desktop with 1070ti and 9th gen i5.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard, track pad and build quality are all very important. I plan on typing a lot.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Remembering I need something coming with me everywhere, battery light is very important and a light form weight form factor. I would like to avoid another thinkpad as I want to "escape work"

Need a laptop with dedicate GPU and USB-C PD

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 03:08 PM PST

I need a lightweight laptop that I can take it on the go without carrying a bulky power adapter(so it can be charged with USB-C PD, not while using). I need to work on graphics related stuff occasionally so it need to have a dedicate GPU.

It doesn't have to be only powered by USB-C PD, as long as it CAN BE.

The current best one I can find is surface book 2, which has GTX1050, with a bulky power adapter(104W), but can be powered by usb-c PD, which is mostly good enough unless you need to run 100% GPU for long time.

However, surface book 2 is out-dated with only 8th Gen Intel CPU, I hope the bros here can help me find a better one.

    Thanks!

[US] 13"-15" Laptop for Software Development up to $1500

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 11:19 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States, prefer to order online, budget around $1500. If really necessary, I can re-use the 1TB M.2 SSD from my old computer, although I'd prefer to include a new one (around $130 on Amazon) in my budget.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Solid battery life when not overly-using GPU, but fairly powerful CPU & GPU (good thermals) when sitting on a desk and plugged in. Preferably an easy way to disable the GPU and switch to integrated in order to save battery life when doing very basic 3D models for which a GPU isn't necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a huge deal, my old laptop is a little under 5lb and almost 0.75 inch thick, and I'm fine with going thicker and slightly heavier

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 (can provide own license), Linux (prefer some sort of official support or at least well-tested to run Linux well)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches, prefer 15 but anything works

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly software development for embedded platforms, occasionally use Xilinx Vivado (very heavy on RAM and CPU and can easily run 6 hour background jobs).

Also use SolidWorks but with not-too-complex models, but some sort of decent Quadro would be nice. Sometimes use CUDA computation jobs (not super intensive but it would be nice to have as powerful CUDA performance as possible).

Very rarely play games, the games I play are fairly lightweight so it's the lowest priority in actually selecting hardware.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Occasionally play lightweight games like Portal, Team Fortress 2, Drone Racing League Sim. Lowest settings is fine, seems like almost any GPU will be able to handle it.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good touchpad is huge for me, trackpoint is nice but not absolutely necessary. A USB-C port (charging is nice but not crucial) would be extremely useful to have, so I can re-use my old docking station, but also having other ports (USB + HDMI, maybe SD card). Ethernet is nice but not a priority. 1080p screen is absolutely essential, but I'd really like to avoid the battery drop caused by a 4K screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Good build quality would be nice (preferably some sort of business-oriented laptop), aesthetics don't matter much. I would prefer to buy with the lowest RAM and disk config, and then order cheap RAM and SSD from Amazon and swap it in. (Need to have 32gb ram and 1tb ssd)

Office use + Light to Med Gaming + Photoshop

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 05:57 PM PST

    Hi there,

I'm currently very not updated on the laptops market and would like to have your recommendations.

I am thinking of buying new PC parts (upgrading my old desktop) along with a laptop that I can carry around the office and have medium gaming capabilities. As of the budget, let's say there is not a set limit as of yet but rather work myself into saving up for that amount.

I'm looking for a laptop that is light (Max weight is 2kg) and is able to handle office/photoshop along with light to medium gaming (Currently thinking of shifting all gaming capabilities using Stream Stream but the laptop can play let's say The Witcher 3/NBA 2k/*upcoming cyberpunk 2022* on 1080p - 60 FPS on its own - medium settings would do) .

I'm currently bombarded with laptop recommendations of MSI GF series, MSI Prestige series, Razer Blade and I personally think they are too expensive since I would like to allocate some funds towards my desktop as well.

Any other laptop recommendations would be great.

Looking for an upgrade over a 2015 laptop. Mainly using it for general use, but also will be using it for photo editing/video editing/Netflix($1200 budget)

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,200 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want it to be huge, but I don't need it to be the thinnest thing in the world if it's not the best build quality

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches and above

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo editing in Photoshop, video editing in Sony Vegas

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Won't be gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is a must. I want to keep this laptop for 3-4 years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you for the help. I'm not very good at this
