Home Networking Internet Connection is 23 MB/s when going through router, 180 MB/s when connected direct to modem

Internet Connection is 23 MB/s when going through router, 180 MB/s when connected direct to modem

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 12:29 PM PST

My internet connection is blazing fast (180 MB/s down or more) when my PC is plugged directly into my cable modem. When I plug the computer into my wireless router first, and then plug the wireless router into the computer, the download speed on my computer is a measly 23 MB/s. Clearly something is up with my router and I hope someone can help me troubleshoot.

    System Specs:
Dell Alienware desktop running Windows 10 latest patches
    Processor-Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 3000 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

    Wireless Router Specs:
Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz with 4 port switch
    Model: WRT54G
    Driver is latest

    Modem Specs:
    Motorola DocSis 3.1
    Model: MB8600

    Internet Provider: Comcast

    Troubleshooting so far:

Computer plugged direct to modem: blazing fast
Computer plugged to router and router to modem: slow

Variations of computer-->router-->modem attempted, all slow:

    Wifi enabled
    Wifi disabled
All ports plugged in with devices
All ports empty except the computer cable and modem cable
Computer plugged into all four ports (obviously not all at once)

    Assumptions:
There is either something systemically wrong with the router, or there is a setting in the router properties that is slowing things down. There are a tonne of settings in the router config that I haven't tried monkeying with yet - any suggestions?

Beginner looking for help setting up home network with Ubiquiti router/switch and VLANs

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:11 PM PST

Hi! I'm looking to get some help/advice/guidance on re-doing my home network. I'm not tech-illiterate but networking is not something I've dabbed in very much, other than flashing dd-wrt/tomato on routers back in the day.

Attached is a picture of what I plan on doing. https://i.imgur.com/F8ZxjER.png

My wife and I both work from home multiple times a week so we want to isolate the work computers from the kids' tablets, our cell phones and our media equipment etc.

Essentially I'd like each port on the Edgerouter to be a separate VLAN.

I've been looking at videos on youtube and reading the ubiquity guides but to be honest I'm still lost, it all seems a bit overwhelming.

I'd also like to be able to assign each device its own IP, in my old router is was called static DHCP I think, like assigning personal laptop 1 to 192.168.1.50 and Samsung kids tablet to 192.168.1.40 etc.

If possible I'd also like to separate the devices connected to the Ubiquiti switch into their own VLAN so they can't see each other on the network.

Is there some step-by-step guide I can follow, I can see the menus to create the VLANs in the router firmware, but I'm unsure what settings. I've been reading https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115012700967-EdgeRouter-VLAN-Aware-Switch

Some of the steps say optional and I'm hoping there's an easy to follow guide to making each port on the edgerouter its own VLAN and the corresponding settings to use on the switch.

Your help/advice is very much appreciated, this is my first entry into complicated networking and I'm excited to get this all set up and learn a lot!

PS: Do VLANs provide enough separation that a work connection would be completely invisible to anything else on the network, and vice-versa?

Tester says cable ok but no lan connection

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:37 PM PST

So today I was doing a network install on a friend's house.

One cable we passed was a Cat6 ftp with a total length of about 45 meters.

The issue was that the cable tester said the endings were fine but I got no lan connection when connecting a computer.

The other cables we passed were Cat5e ftp and all were fine.

Could the 45 meters cable length be too much? It's the only option that comes to my mind to justify it not working since cat 6 maximum length is 55 meters - I think.

What could cause a situation like this?

Looking for advice on my whole house VPN attempt. Everything is configured but I still have leaks. More below, help appreciated.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:15 PM PST

To start off, I have googled this extensively and can't figure out what's going on including asking the VPN sub.

I have a Nord subscription and a tomato flashed Linksys router. I configured everything through the VPN tunneling section of tomato using Nord's official tutorial. I double and triple checked everything and it all went smooth without issues or errors.

When I hit Start Now and check the status, I am connected but my IP is still the same as it was before configuration? I thought the IP and location would reflect the server that Nord is using? Nothing has changed. Am I missing something?

    Fiber optic to LAN converter

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:17 AM PST

    outside the US .
finally got fiber optic at my home.

my service provider's router (modem is shared throughout the apartment building i guess, DHCP is enabled) has a monthly payment and i want to replace it and get my own.

assuming the simplest solution is to get a converter to a LAN connection i found this adapter .

the guy who installed the router told me i had to get the same fiber optic module as the one in the router : a purple headed T1490/R1310 20KM part that looks something like this .

here are the links to the both items on amzaon :

    module
    adapter

    will this combination work?
will i be able to connect a standard router ?

    thanks!

How to isolate a work computer from the rest of our network with a MOFI 4500 router with a guest network or similar.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:28 PM PST

I started another post about this but figured this would be better as a separate thread.

Here is the owner manual but I'm not sure if this is even possible with this router.

    http://mofinetwork.com/files/MOFI4500_4GXeLTE_SIM4_User_Manual.pdf?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Here is the info from my other post.

Looking to isolate a work from home computer from the rest of the home network.

So we have a work from home situation at our house. That computer is a company supplied laptop that has company loaded software. It connects to a shared drive via a VPN and other than that just accesses things like Microsoft 365 et cet.

I figured that it is probably a good idea to isolate it from the rest of the network and all of our personal devices. I am not sure if this is really necessary but since the IT department of work sometimes connects to that laptop remotely to run diagnostics and such I figured that I should try to make sure that there isn't any risk to them having access to our network. Also if there is some virus on the shared drive that gets downloaded or whatever that we are not at risk.

We currently use a MOFI router as our internet modem and router. I thought that maybe I could set up a guest network or something in this situation. Is that even necessary or would it even help?

    Thanks!

Edit: if this helps This is the router. Thanks to the poster below for finding this for me.

Trying to log into my router through 192.168.1.1 isn't working.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:26 PM PST

I am trying to change some setting on my WiFi, but when I put in my IP address (192.168.1.1), it asks for credentials, but then says "Your connection to this site is not private". Because of this, I cant put in my credentials and proceed. I tried https://192.168.1.1/ aswell, as opposed to http:/192.168.1.1/, but that just gave me a "This site cannot be reached" error page. What can I do? I have my login credentials, but I cant seem to get past the login screen!

    Vlan not working

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:57 PM PST

    Hello!

I am posting this because I am having troubles making this diagram come to life(linked below). Right now all pcs can identify all other appliances, regardless of which Vlan they are at and wifi in VLan 2 cannot access the internet.

I am using 802.1Q protocol and my switch is L2 . My question is the following. Is this diagram valid? Does my router need to support something that it does not have? Do you recommend any changes to the current diagram? Do you need more info?

Do the voip phones need to be tagged? Do I need to have any considerations regarding VoIP?

    Network diagram

Any help is welcome and I'm sorry if this is a bit vague, I am still learning!

Home LAN Speed Issues and Looking for Advice

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:32 PM PST

Hey all, I really need some pointers here. My networking knowledge is intermediate, I'm no expert but have known enough to have held my own for the last 15+ years.

Issue: I have AT&T fiber, 1000 mbps down and 1000 mbps up. I get about 850-950 on average hardwired directly to the 5268AC gateway, but when connected to my R7000 Nighthawk router, I pretty much top out at around 200.

Main thing I need to figure out is if my R7000 is defective, if the firmware is causing the problem, or if I'm just missing something.

    Here's my setup:

Service: AT&T U-verse fiber, 1000/1000 down/up Modem Gateway: 5268AC (says FXN under it, idk if that matters) Router: Netgear R7000 Nighthawk (gigabit on each device port), firmware version 1.0.9.88_10.2.88 Cabling: 2 x brand new Cat-7 cables, one 10 ft. from gateway to router, one 40 ft. from router to PC PC: TL;DR, ROG X-570-E plugged into gigabit port OS: Windows 10 version 1903 build 18362.592

I can't think of anything else to start with. Since there are so many possible variables, I'll keep it high-level up to there.

I've read various posts across various sites and forums including subreddits, spent a few hours with AT&T, got about 15 minutes of free support from Netgear, neither were really any help, and have changed different configurations and settings in the gateway, router, and Windows. I've gotten just about nowhere, but I'm okay with starting from scratch in case I missed something.

Other interesting thing is the R7000 speedtest (when you have to enabled QoS to get to it) reports 310~ mbps, but DSLreports sticks between 150-200 with or without QoS enabled (I normally have it disabled since it slows down the speed from 200 to 150, usually).

So, what should I start looking at next? Thank you much in advance, I'm just burned out from how much time I've put into this. My router return period has passed because I was busy through the holidays after purchasing it on Black Friday, and Netgear support just won't do much unless I pay.

Revert DNS changes to default on Windows 10

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:36 AM PST

Hey so Im looking to block content on my ccomputer so I followed the guide here https://cleanbrowsing.org/guides/windows to change my dns.

Essentially it boils down to 4 commands i made on windows 10

netsh interface ipv4 set dns "Wi-Fi" static 185.228.168.168 primary

    netsh interface ipv4 add dns "Wi-Fi" 185.228.169.168 index=2

netsh interface ipv6 set dns "Wi-Fi" static 2a0d:2a00:1:: primary

    netsh interface ipv6 add dns "Wi-Fi" 2a0d:2a00:2:: index=2

I previously never touched any default settings. How would i revert back these four commands so my computer uses its default dns settings

Extreme confusion... Why can't each router connect to in home ethernet ports to create multiple AP's?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:37 PM PST

My parents built a new home and have several (in wall) wired ethernet ports upstairs and downstairs. Currently there is one incoming port connection downstairs to the modem/router combo, and the rest in the home are unused. Can I find where the ISP set up their connection to the home, put the modem out there, and connect a LAN to the in home wiring so I can place routers around the home using this connection? I'm trying to improve the wireless signal upstairs, and would prefer to not hard wire the AP to the modem/router combo. Thanks!

I have a brand new Xfinity modem on my cable line and even after I called and disabled the local Wi-Fi and logged into the router myself and disable both frequencies it is still broadcasting a hidden SSID with the Mac address that matches the Mac address of the modem. Any ideas on how I can turn that off or disable it.

    Redoing home wifi, partially wired

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 09:57 AM PST

Howdy. I currently have a two-story home using Apple Airport wifi, with three access points. I'm thinking about installing Google Wifi, which I use in another house I rent out. The reason for the upgrade is that I'm expecting Tesla power walls in a couple of weeks, and that location of the house does not get enough wifi signal. I also had to move an AP close to the garage for my wife's car to receive software updates.

At this time, I also get lousy Internet via the downstairs AP, which is annoying because that's where my office is and we rely on wifi calling for our phones due to lack of cell coverage (out in the boonies).

    Thinking:

    1. Place a switch in the garage, along with one wired AP.
    2. Place main wifi controller where the ISP connection comes in, wired to their router.
    3. Run cable from their router to my garage switch.
    4. Place another AP in upstairs bedroom.
    5. Run cable to Tesla power walls from switch, for connectivity.
    6. Run cable to downstairs office, to an AP.
    7. Run cable to downstairs bedroom, to an AP.

Is Google wifi the right type of device for this configuration? Should I go with something else?

    Wi-Fi Boosters

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:25 PM PST

Can anybody recommend some good Wi-Fi boosters?

Optimal specs for the booster(s): Reliable wireless transmission to connected devices, able to receive a somewhat weak signal through several walls (7/8), from 400-500 feet away, 2.4 ghz outgoing band, a decently sized outgoing range (50-70 feet), no dead zones/spotty connections, the closest to WPA2-AES as possible, decent encryption/security across the board, compact, somewhere around the size of say a Nighthawk X4S Tri-Band WiFi Mesh Extender (no large router-sized things), maximum price: $200, can be bought online, password protected, slate grey/black for a color (this would be extremely nice to have), no bright lights (switchable is fine), option to hide the SSID (not requires, but would be nice), reliable on all fronts, somewhat durable, water resistant (would be nice, but it doesn't have to have it), plugs into the wall like a nightlight/air refresher, no clunky/buggy UI for web portal/configuration, has a smartphone app, and it's not produced by Levono/Huawei/other iffy tech company. Sorry for the hideous formatting, I'm working off of a phone :/. I'm also a bit new to this space too, so please forgive my ignorance. Thanks!

What determines the bands that a cellular router can access?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:18 PM PST

A while back I set myself up with a Huawei B525-23a router, it can access all bands currently used by 4G in the UK. Because I live on a canal boat I thought it'd be wise to get some external antennas to place outside of the steel box I live in so I went ahead an got two Poyting OMNI-280-02 antennas, I chose these because they cover all frequency bands for 4G but also they would be future proofed for the ~700 and ~3600 frequency ranges that 5G is set to run on.

Do antennas dictate what bands the router can pick up? Or will it be necessary to upgrade my router at a later date in order to access the 5G network.

Potential new house build - Network "closet" location idea

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:02 PM PST

We have been coming up with a floor plan for a house we want to build. I am going to likely run cat 6a everywhere as well as conduit or smurftube for future upgrades. I was hoping others could take a look at my idea and provide any thoughts, changes, or point out any oversights. The network closet is not planned to be in the utility room with the main panel - will this be a problem?

The floor plan for the basement is here

The network closet is going to be in the narrow room (2.5 ft wide) behind the media centre with a bookshelf as a hidden door, the utility room is behind the stairs, and the room next to that is a gaming/ office/future home theatre (the door for that room has actually been moved to the other side where the 2 white cabinets are).

Connecting detached in-law unit to home network

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:10 PM PST

I don't know much when it comes to home networking, but I've been searching and reading about my particular scenario on this sub as much as I can. The situation I'm looking for advice is this:

Currently, the modem/main router is in the front of the house, I want to set up a switch and access point in the back house, which is a detached, converted garage. I have permission from the owners to drill a hole and run a cable however I need from the main modem inside the house. The room that the modem is in is about a hundred feet from the nearest wall of the in-law unit. I figure I have a couple different possible solutions:

    1. run an Ethernet cable up the side of the house across the roof and use the existing fixtures for the power lines to support the ethernet cable to run to the back (bad idea?). This would be the longest path, and I am unsure whether or not it would be less than the 300ft max.
    2. run an Ethernet cable along the ground across walkways that are used daily to the nearest wall of the in-law unit. This would be the shortest path, but would need some way to secure the cable so that it doesn't get tripped on or damaged on the walkway. Digging and burying the cable is not an option here.
    3. run the ethernet cable outside to the side of the front and plug into a wireless bridge (looking at the Ubiquiti LocoM5 most likely) with another unit in line of sight on the in-law unit.

All of these would then go through a hole in the wall of the in-law unit to a switch, and finally set up an access point a bit more centralized in the in-law unit.

Solution (1) I am not sure whether it's a good idea to run an ethernet cable next to power lines and am not sure about how else I would support the cable between the two buildings, potentially I could avoid the roof all together and only run in on the side of the house underneath the roof's overhang, but am unsure about having it hanging quite low between the two buildings (30ft at most). Solution (2) would be the simplest and the cheapest, but I am unsure whether it's a good idea. Solution (3) seems the best, and most likely what I will end up doing, but is definitely the most expensive and the distance is short enough that it feels unnecessary. I am curious what your opinions and/or advice about this scenario would be. Thank you.

One other thing is that they used to have a coaxial cable run to the back for cable, I have looked into the adapters for internet over coaxial, but I read they potentially have issues with Dish TV, which is the cable provider they have. I definitely want to avoid disturbing their TV, so not sure if this is a good idea either. I think they have since removed the coaxial cable that ran back there, so I would still need to install a new one. I assume coaxial cable is better/safer to run outside next to power lines due to the extra shielding compared to ethernet?

Disconnect from VOICE CHAT only in games and Discord.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:55 PM PST

Keep getting disconnected from VOICE CHAT (only) in R6 and Discord.

    Hello, friends!

I'm having a problem with my Rainbow Six Siege... I cant stay in voice chat for more than 2 rounds, give or take. Suddenly, I stop talking and stop hearing. There's no signs off rubberbanding, lag or anything... it simply vanishes.

I submitted a ticket to Ubisoft and they said that was a problem (DOUBLE NAT) but it's already fixed and I still persists. They even said my problem was with my microphone... agh.

Things I tried: Disabled ISP; Disabled Firewall; Forcing windows to use my headset; Open ports (didn't try DMZ); Disabling other routers in my house.

cannot connect to internal home server through external IP when on wifi

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:22 AM PST

I have a Nextcloud instance set up on a machine I use as home server in my internal network (connected to the modem with cable), I already have all the necessary port forwarding rules in the modem settings so that I can access it from outside.

Now, from devices connected via cable to the modem I can access Nextcloud with both the internal IP and the public IP assigned by my ISP.

BUT when I use a device connected to the modem through wifi I can only access the server with the internal IP.

How is that? I obviously want to be able to do it both ways. Do you know that maybe home/private modems have some sort of additional strict rule only for wifi connection, since wifi is let's say "detectable" from outside your house?

Home mesh network with tcpdump functionality

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:36 PM PST

I would like a home mesh network with good tcpdump or other low-level monitoring facilities.

My needs are mostly ease of debugging my own software between hosts wherever they are connected, but likely also some light but permanent filtering and logging.

I don't fully understand how mesh works yet, so if it's important I want to be able to monitor/capture fully internal activity that is perhaps routed between hosts connected to the same extender, between extenders, between router and extenders, and of course between hosts connected to the router and also external traffic. My guess is that this might mean needing to run tcpdump on the router and each extender, but perhaps I'm mistaken and it only needs to run on the router for full coverage.

I figure that Netgear products like Orbi may allow this by enabling a debug flag via the web admin console and then ssh'ing in and running tcpdump, but I have negative experience with their tcpdump hard hanging a high-end Nighthawk router requiring power cycling when tcpdump is left running for a few minutes even without logging (just grep). Still, I don't find evidence in their product data of debug being on all routers. For other brands I have no idea.

I have thought that I could use a Synology router and I believe they have mesh. I have their NAS and the functionality and quite reliable. However, the hardware/networking features of their routers seem kind of old.

First time fios customer install on Friday!!

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:27 PM PST

    xPost from fios:

Getting fios 100/100 on Friday and need some direction in which router/setup to purchase. I am skeptical of the Verizon hardware and would like to purchase and manage my own. Should I buy a router or should I buy a mesh system or should I look into separate components like access points etc? I rent a 1500 sq ft house, one level with basement. The ont is in the basement and I would not be able to just drill through the floor to wire the router upstairs since I am renting. I have a few phones, a surface, a desktop, and two xboxes that need to be connected. What should I buy? Thanks!

setting up an NBN home wifi

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:25 PM PST

Planning to keep it simple im just here for a few questions. Netgear DM200 High Speed ADSL2+/VDSL Modem - can it handle NBN Fibre to Building? ^ planning on just hooking that up to my old WiFi router and turning said router into an access point. the old WiFi router is capable of 2.4 and 5 ghz. Would the modem be capable of making the router output 2.4ghz and 5 ghz?? or is that depending on the WiFi router itself? im clueless for a lot of these so advice would help.

    best AC router under $100?

They would like to have more bandwidth between all the devices in the house - what would be the best wifi router recommendation (802.11AC) for a $100 budget?
