Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:54 AM PST I'm currently building a new house and installing a few hard wired Ring cameras along with their door bell. I also plan to make a few runs of ethernet to each tv for internet, hdmi, etc what cable would you recommend using? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:51 PM PST I currently have spectrum. I have a modem connected next to a router. From that router is a 100ft ethernet cable going under the house to a room with another router. All of a sudden that second router is no longer able to produce an internet connection through wifi or directly connected. I tried connecting my laptop with wifi off to the 100ft ethernet in the other room and I am able to have internet, so I don't think there's a problem with the ethernet cable. I also tried using the second router in place of the first one and it works fine. I've had this setup since 2013. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Using MoCA with a bridged Verizon router. Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:16 PM PST I plan on tinkering and working through this later this week, but thought I'd ask this fine group if they had any insights or if my plan should work. I currently have a network running off of a Verizon ONT (wired via coax) through to Verizon router, bridged to my main (user) router. The Verizon router is essentially blind and disabled and is just used to retrieve the Wan lease and forward it to my user router. Cabling is a bit of a mess in this townhouse due to so many old coax runs. Currently it's simply: Garage ONT - into Splitter, single out to - Kitchen - Verizon Router However, I recently mapped out a cable run that runs from the garage to my server room, and may allow me to get rid of my weak powerline setup. Since my Verizon router is dead weight I'll be using a Motorola MoCA adapter to push data. My proposed solution is: Garage ONT - into Splitter (second out to server room), first out to - Kitchen - network port of MoCA Adapter, device port to Verizon router. My idea is that I send the ONT data to the Verizon router, then take the LAN to my user router's WAN, then take the LAN from my router to the MoCA adapter, which sends it back over the same coax to form the MoCA network. My current concern is that I know the quantum gateway has MoCA functionality, and since it's not routing anything I want it isolated. Would placing a MoCA filter such as a PoE one onto the coax input be sufficient to isolate the Verizon router, theoretically? Setting up the bridge was a bit rough as it was years ago so I'd rather keep it doing it's simple job without disturbing things much. Cheers in advance for the thoughts. I'd draw some diagrams but I'm writing this up from my bed and on my phone. [link] [comments] |
Issues connecting chromecast to TP-Link deco M4 Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:57 PM PST Like the title says, I recently bought a TP-Link deco m4 mesh system with 3 nodes, and my Wifi works perfectly fine but when I was trying to connect my chromecasts to my mesh wifi it kept saying it cannot connect to the wifi. I'm not sure what to do as it worked with my tp link router before but not with this mesh system. Any advice ? [link] [comments] |
Paying for 1Gig with WOW and only 175Mbps while hardlined Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:31 PM PST Hello guys, I'm beginning to build my home network and I'm completely green on the subject of networking. My main devices are a Lenovo Ideapad 310-15ABR, two PS4s, a XBox One, an iPad and two LG G8X cellphones. I am also hoping to set up a wireless home security system in the future. I recently upgraded my service to 1gig with home phone service. I am using the modem provided by WOW, a Technicolor CGA4234. Its a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. From the speed tests(ookla, google, and even WOW's) I've performed, my Ideapad is only getting between 150-200mbps while hardlined by Cat5e ethernet cable directly to the modem. While on wifi (5.8Ghz band), I'm getting about 150. However, comparatively, my PS4 is getting about 380mbps while hardlined and my LG G8X is getting 500+ mbps on wifi. I'm absolutely stumped as to what the cause for the lack of speed. My LAN nic is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller (I'm not sure of the exact model or how to out what it is). It states 1.0Gbps connection and I have 1gig full duplex enabled. My wireless is a Realtek 8821ae. My focus/goal is to get the speeds I'm paying for my Laptop and Consoles because. What should I do and where should I begin? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST Networking novice here. Recently moved into a new house with is prewired with Cat5e. However there is only 4 points in the house, Kitchen and 3 bedrooms. I've successfully installed a patch panel and switch with terminate in each of the 4 rooms. However the broadband comes in through the front room, with no network point available. There is however a telephone socket which I've opened up to reveal what's on the pictures attached. In the room where the switch/panel is located this is an extra 4 cables which are attached to a terminal block. Is this someone related to the telephone socket? And which 4 wires instead of one? My question is can I repurpose the telephone wire and add to the patch panel. And if so I assume it's one of those 4 extra wires. Any help appreciated and sorry for wishy washy explanation. Pictures below for reference. https://i.imgur.com/IKCIg0s.jpg [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:28 PM PST My setup: Synology 1019+ running DNS The issue Im running into is that I have DNS setup on my Synology and a forwarder to my piHole IP. My DHCP clients DNS is going to the Synology and that points to the piHole via the forwarder. Problem I'm having is I have no visibility into each of the clients via the piHole. The only thing I see is the IP of the Synology from the admin page of the piHole, which is as expected. I want the visibility into each client in my piHole so should I be setting it all up differently? Has anyone setup Synology DNS with a piHole another way? [link] [comments] |
Best practices for a crowded network? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:14 PM PST I have fiber in the house. There are about 50 devices, half wired, half wireless. 40 of the devices are home automation devices, security cameras, etc. About ten of them are entertainment devices (DirecTV, AppleTV, etc.) There are a few printers and computers on there, too (two home offices). Right now, I have the networks segregated. The incoming fiber modem (Arris) has one port going to a gigabit switch that has the entertainment devices (TV stuff) and has Wifi on 5ghz. The next port on the Arris goes to an Apple AirPort Extreme (w/ 5ghz turned off), then to another switch that has all the home automation and security stuff on it. Separate dummy IP addresses and all. Does this make sense from a bandwidth point of view? Is there any reason to keep the two networks separated? Does the chattiness of the security devices really interfere that much with the video / entertainment side? Or am I over complicating things? (Originally, I did this because the Arris modems were getting replaced every few months, and I hated having to reconfigure a million devices over and over) [link] [comments] |
How do organize network and firewall it off? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:13 PM PST Currently, I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and a switch connected to the router for all the ethernet devices. This means the wireless router is acting as the firewall and providing NAT. I recently got a managed switch (with L3 capability) as I want to do network segmentation between personal devices and smart TVs. I also can't directly connect my switch to the modem as it doesn't provide any firewall or NATing as far as I am aware. I'm really confusing myself on how to best approach this segmentation. If I just simply connect the managed switch to the router with another IP space, that means the wifi devices can't reach the ethernet devices, which would provide some segmentation and provide firewalling to the switch IP space, but also any home wifi devices would be separate. Or would it be best to get a firewall (such as an Edgerouter Lite), connect the managed switch to that and then use the current wireless router as a simple AP on a separate VLAN? And then have the IOT devices on the guest network? My only concern with this approach is I would like to still provide a pihole for those devices. I guess I could also run a pfSense VM on my server, but not sure if that would be a good idea, and also using an Edgerouter could give me some enterprise experience... I felt I had decent networking experience but figuring this out is making me feel like an idiot. [link] [comments] |
Anyone know of a dual band legacy (i.e. full length) PCI wireless card? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 04:17 AM PST I'm moving my gaming PC upstairs away from my router and I'm trying to find a wireless card for it. Unfortunately my PCI-E slot is blocked by my graphics card and not usable. I'd like to use my 5ghz wifi signal but I can't find a dual band legacy PCI cards. Can anyone point me in the right direction? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:51 AM PST Does anybody have a recommended wifi network card for my desktop? I have an ASUS motherboards and run Win10, my computer will be about 30 feet from the router, but I can't run ethernet cables through the house since I'm renting. [link] [comments] |
Can I access wifi from two houses over? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:16 PM PST I am moving two doors down from my family home, the houses here are joined so the distance isn't too far. If possible I'd like to just pay one wifi bill and was just wondering if this is possible and any recommendations to test. [link] [comments] |
Internet often random lag spikes Posted: 02 Feb 2020 07:08 PM PST Hello people ^_^ So, this problem occurred multiple times since I moved houses and I have no idea how to fix it. I get random 1k ms lag spikes every...15-30-45 secs and I just dont know how to stop it. https://gyazo.com/d041289ab93a46c5e92ff9dd8537b6a2 https://gyazo.com/d4447db248f321f23cd75e7467366e69 I'm connected through a Wifi-Disc thats connected to my PC through ethernet cable. I live with 3 other people that are connected to the wifi but the issue happens even when I'm the only one connected. I've tried so many things that other people suggested (what I've seen on other forums, I've haven't posted anything before this) still nothing. [link] [comments] |
“Best” 6-8 port 10GBASE-T switch under ~$700? (x-post r/homelab) Posted: 02 Feb 2020 03:04 PM PST I'm thinking unmanaged but either would be fine. There are two workstations and two servers. I run my small photo/video business from my home here. Up till now we've just had direct 10g connections to the QNAP NAS, but ready to graduate. Mainly I care about performance. I don't think I'd need managed but I know it can't hurt to have that ability. Thanks guys! [link] [comments] |
Nighthawk R8500 Guest Wifi No Internet Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:40 PM PST Greetings I have the R8500 in AP mode behind a Pfsense firewall. I have an issue where the gust wifi is not getting internet or any other network connection. It does get IP assignment from the DHCP server on the Pfsense box. Does anyone know if the Guest wifi in these devices are I a Vlan and if so what is their vlan tag? A side note the normal wifi works just fine. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:32 PM PST I want to make a server that's capable of Plex, nas, HomeSeer, and security camera data recording. My question is 1. Is this possible for 1 system? 2. should it be 1 system? 3. How do I do it? How much will it cost? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Wireless Bridge Question (Gigabit Fiber) Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:28 PM PST Will a Wireless Bridge give me gigabit speed? My setup: Gigabit Fiber ONT -> EdgeRouter 4 -> Switch -> Asus RT-AC3100. I have an Asus RT-AC3100 on the first floor acting as an access point and my media devices is on the second floor just above that AP. It's a dual band MU-MIMO router/switch. Bringing an ethernet cable up is a bit hard, so I'm thinking of doing a wireless bridge since some of the devices wireless isn't so great. For example, my Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) speed test is close to 300Mbps. My Apple TV 4k gets around 600 Mbps. The devices directly wired in is around >900 Mbps. It's important for the shield since I want to use that as a Plex server for the house. So I'm hoping I can do: ONT -> EdgeRoute 4 -> Switch -> Asus RT-AC3100 -> (wireless) -> Asus RT-AC3100 (?) -> Switch -> Connections to media devices. [link] [comments] |
Recommend me a new modem and wifi router for cable internet. Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:20 PM PST I'm sure you see this all time where someone wants an alternative to the Comcast unit but doesn't know what to buy. I need at least 4 ports and my budget is around $150. [link] [comments] |
DOCSIS 3.1 Router with Coaxial? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:13 PM PST Hello, I am with Mediacom right now, I have 1 Gb speeds and it is always around 980 Mbps. I have to pay $15 each month for a router and I would like my own. I need a DOCSIS 3.1 router, but my house has a coaxial cable and I haven't seen a router with coaxial. I see there are Coaxial to RJ45 converters/adapters but I don't know which ones are ok for Gigabit speeds or what I can do to solve my problem. So what router should I buy, what should I do? If it is compatible with Express VPN then even better because I would love to connect the router instead of every single device. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Setting up my whole existing network as a subnet on a local network Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:04 PM PST Hi all. I recently moved in with a roommate who has a combo modem/router and isn't in a position to change that right now. I figured the easiest solution for now would be to set up my existing network and connect it as a subnet on his existing network, but that doesn't seem to be working. My own network is 10.20.0.0/22, and his is the standard 192.168.0.0/24. If I connect my UniFi USG's WAN port to his router, I can get an IP address on the 192 subnet but that's all. Is there a way to set this up? This isn't the first time I've been set up as a double-NAT; my last apartment had me on a local IP at first and things worked okay. EDIT: I managed to get the static route to work. When I first set it up, I set it as a non-default static route (0.0.0.0/1, at first) because the UI wouldn't let me set a /0. I set a next-hop for 0.0.0.0/0 at the router CLI and that seemed to do the trick. My remaining question, however, is this: why didn't I ever need to do this before? If the subnet gateway is responsible for setting that static route for its outbound traffic, then why didn't I have this problem the last time I ran in this configuration? I'm still missing what caused all this, but at least it's working now. [link] [comments] |
Mesh routers with static routing capability? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:03 PM PST I have a home lab set up on a separate network from the rest of my house. All my home devices are set up on the standard 192.168.1.0/24 and my lab stuff is on several different networks in the 10.10.0.0/16 range. I currently have an older linksys router on which I have one static route set up in order to reach my lab. I'm looking to replace my current router and most of the mesh systems I've looked into seem to be missing this feature and I'm wondering if there are any that support it. [link] [comments] |
RT AC86U loses connection every 2 minutes Posted: 02 Feb 2020 11:19 AM PST I got an Asus AC86U router this week, the firmware is up to date, everything's great, but I have two major problems: 1) I lose connection every 2 minutes. I can't play ps4 online because I get "Network connection lost" nonstop. Now I thought it was the PS4 at fault, but I noticed my phone loses the wifi icon every 2-5 minutes as well, and my media often freezes 2) It's slower than my old Asus 66U wireless. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2020 01:11 PM PST Fairly long post but I appreciate the read... I have 400Mbps service and I get 450-480 wired and over 5Ghz Wi-Fi with the Archer 3200 as the main router. I have re-purposed phone line cat5e with rj45 ends for hardwired ethernet but those wires are in the basement. I want to use an old Asus gigabit router as the main router in the basement. I want to disable it's wireless radio and use it as a DHCP giver and hard wire it to my Archer 3200 and to my wife's office up stairs. Basically I want the Archer 3200 to work as an AP for all my wired and wireless devices except the office computer but I don't want to put it in the basement. I went through the normal steps of turning off DHCP on the 3200 and assigning it an IP outside of the old Asus DHCP range. I also turned off the wireless radio on the Asus router as I prefer. I was able to get about 100Mbps wired and over 5g wifi and some of my devices would not connect. I did a fair bit of troubleshooting. I can confirm there is no limiting constraints in the wiring (the archer 3200 gave full speeds wired and over wifi when configured in the basement tested from a hardwired device in the living room). I'm at a bit of a loss as to why I can't get my full speed and or some devices to connect. Some points: The old ASUS router was a free device given to me by SPRINT about 4 years ago. It is basically a 66U with SPRINT firmware that I can't seem to change. I'm trying to set this up not using the wifi radio so the ports should give me gigabit potential in theory. I'm slightly concerned this hardware/firmware combo it's self is the constraining factor for speed but it doesn't explain why some devices would not connect. Other then that the only thing I can think of is that I am doing something wrong with the DHCP/IP settings. I'm fairly knowledgeable but I can certainly get lost in some of the advanced settings and lingo. Any thoughts or pointers would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
