30 year old home phone line and equipment upgrade,

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:46 PM PST

so here is the deal, we live in a house that has a atleast 30 year old telephone cable and equipment ran into the house, and our ISP wont come out to replace our outside line even though its been pushed above ground by roots in many places and has breaks in it,

so my question is what can we do to upgrade the house to lower line noise as we have horrible line quality static on the phone and our DSL drops and has packet loss, lots of CRC errors, error packets the works, so what can we do?

Max Permanent Link Length vs Max Permanent Channel Length?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:12 PM PST

All previous categories of balanced twisted pair copper cabling supported a Permanent Link Length of 90m (295') and a channel of 100m (328'). Category 8 has a maximum Permanent Link Length of 24m (78') and a maximum Channel length of 30m (100') when supporting 25Gbps and 40Gbps speeds.

I don't know what "maximum permanent link length" means (or "max permanent channel length", for that matter). Does this mean that when running a category 8 network, the maximum length of one piece of cable must be 78', or less, to maintain the 40Gps speed? Does this mean that the entire "channel", which I'm guessing is length from modem to computer at the end of the line, and everything in between, has to be a total of 100' or less in order to have the 40Gps speed?

If so, does this mean that someone could run a <78' run between a switch or patch panel, and a female outlet on a wall, and as long as the connections to the switch/patch panel, or from the outlet to the end computer, are < an additional 22', 40Gps speed will be possible through that entire run?

Sorry I don't really know the right lingo. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    SMB OVER VPN

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 06:34 PM PST

Hey there, I'm trying to set Windows file sharing to work outside the lan

    let's go by steps

I have outside hosts, clients that can be windows machines, android devices etc.., that i can connect to my VPN server using my dynamic dns, i'm using port 1723 forwarded to 192.168.0.100 wich is where my vpn server is set

Remote and access control are allowed on the firewall, private and public.

I'm able to connect to the VPN server but in the mini wan (pptp) status ipv4 connectivity is not connected, i suppose that it should be showing an ip address in there

I'm able to ping/RDP 192.168.0.100 and other hosts that is inside the network

I'm able to connect to another file sharing on the VPN network but unable to connect to the file sharing that is on the same machine that the VPN server is configured

the file sharing i'm trying to access is 192.168.0.100 and the VPN Server is 192.168.0.100, yes! is the same machine.

I know it's just a configuration thing but i have no idea what to do!

I'm using Windows 10 built in VPN server as for the clients also windows and Android built in VPN client

New Router for Frontier FiOS. Need recommendations.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:40 AM PST

Hey guys, I am upgraded to 500/500 with Frontier after being on 50/50 for a long time. Frontier is coming by later next week to install the new router that supports the 500/500. My old router is a leftover from the Verizon days in Texas.

We have 6 people living in a 2 story house. We are cord cutters and have 4 tvs. 2 that use fire sticks, and chromecasting on the others from Youtube Tv. We also have 2 gaming systems that are occasionally playing online at the same time, and everyone has minimum 1 smart phone and 1 laptop. (I have 2 phones and 2 laptops because of work) I am also running home security via Abode and Arlo Security cameras all at the same time. On a busy evening, we might have 12-15 devices running on the wifi at the same time. We have a heavy load.

My question is this: What router would y'all recommend for a large home such as mine? I've done some research looking at ubiquiti and the Netgear Nighthawk. But my budget is around $100-$120.

I am looking for some kind of networkpanel

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:54 AM PST

    Hello!

I have ethernet cables from my anteroom to three other rooms (in the wall). I also have three network sockets in those rooms. But the cable ends in the anteroom are not connected yet. As soon as I connect them to a switch they should work - so far so good. But since those cables just come out of a hole in the anteroom (https://imgur.com/a/TmNFkHb) It wouldn't look good to just connect them to a switch. Is there some kind of hardware (networkpanel?) I could mount in the wall? Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

Purpose of having multiple dynamic IP's to one modem?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:54 PM PST

My ISP allows for multiple dynamic IP's to their supplied coaxial modem/gateway. And I am trying to figure out how I can utilize them.

Am I correct in assuming having multiple public IP's is the same as having multiple separate accounts/modems from the same ISP? So for example instead of paying for two accounts one for customers/guests and the other for employees/business. I can just use the multiple public IP's for the same result and then save money?

Configure Router DI-524 with WEP Key

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:54 PM PST

    Hi,

I'm trying to configure an old DI-524 with a WEP Key to use with a Nintendo 3DS for some reasons and I can't make it work. I connect it to my computer and it says no internet, either with a LAN Cable or Wiereless, it's also not connecting in the Nintendo 3DS either.

Is there anything I can do? I have an Arris TG2492LG.

Spectrum modem model E31T2V1 : Can I use an adapter to make the single Ethernet split to use two routers?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:50 PM PST

Can I use an adapter to make the single Ethernet so that I an use 2 routers?
I've read something about switches but not sure what would be compatible and if anyone would know if Spectrum allows that.

My goal is to keep the current router ( that came with the modem ) pretty much as is ( to avoid any disruptions ) and then use the new router ( NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router (R6900P)) for gaming , NAS and other devices where I can forward and open ports as I please since the other router is shared with the family.

    Thanks in advance.

    SSD's in a DNS-321?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:42 PM PST

Have an old DLink DNS-321 that I don't really trust anymore. Has anyone put SSD;s in one yet? Anything to watch for?

I wont be using it as100% duty cycle, just as another backup position for some files off my Synology NAS.

    Thanks

How do i set up my home network(s) so that I can experiment without compromising my work-from-home GF's internet connection?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:55 PM PST

*Experiment = fool around with network settings, my raspberry-pi home/web server, etc...

I don't know much about networking, so I thought I'd reach out to you guys/gals. My initial research yielded suggestions that include using two (or three) routers to set up separate networks, using a managed switch to set up a VLAN, and some other options that I don't really understand, but I'm not really qualified to assess their various merits/shortcomings.

Additionally, I don't need to communicate with her network or devices at all.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

    Military Overseas

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 07:39 PM PST

Please help ! I am overseas in Bahrain and living on military base housing. The paid wifi that is setup here is atrocious and unusable so I am asking for options mainly to play ps4 online and use my phone.

A popular way to get better connection out here is for people to purchase wifi eggs, and a sim card for it and load it with Gbs of data monthly (about $26 for 20gb).

A wall in my room has coaxial connection (don't know if it works) and I could possibly purchase a modem/router and test if the building has a wired network.

Option 3 would be possibly ordering a wifi range extender, but the network is secured by website login and always flooded with other people using up bandwidth. Thank you!

Can I share my phone's cellular data to a router/AP?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 08:02 AM PST

I have a router/wireless AP combo device. (TP-link if that matters)

A desktop PC (without a wifi antenna) is connected to it via cable.

Now, is there any way to connect my phone (android) to the wifi and share its cellular data connection to the local network so i can access the internet on the PC?

    Thanks for your help!

wifi drops when i try to play games

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:29 PM PST

    setup info: windows 10 64bit

    i7 4790

    16gb ddr3

    rx 570

so recently i have been having an issue where every time i try to launch a game (CSGO, the division 2, tarkov) i get a couple minutes of game play before i get DC'd, i don't loose connection to the router, and my internet slows down for 30 sec- 1 min. i can browse the internet while talking on discord and watch youtube etc just fine with no issues, this only happens when i try to launch a game and it seems to happen irregularly. and while the internet is down on my PC it works just fine on my phone.

i bought a new USB wifi adapter today (netgear a6210) just to make sure my adapter hasn't gone bad. I installed and updated all drivers, turned off power management, disabled USB switching, flushed my DNS, and reset windows network settings, and disabled my firewalls and still have the same issue. and im going crazy trying to figure this out because i just want to play gmaes. thank you guys in advance

Splunk Tutorial - Introduction For Beginners - Forwarding and Receiving

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:15 AM PST

What kind of product do i need? Access Point/Range Extender/Mesh?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:40 AM PST

    Problem

I'm looking to install some smart hardware in my room which requires wi-fi to function.

However, wi-fi signal is poor in my room and especially in the corner of the room where this hardware will go. My room is in the attic.

I have ethernet cabling running up to my room and I am using an (un?)managed switch to provide wired connections to all the hardware that can accept it (PC, TV, consoles, etc). It has some free ports and I can envisage a product that I can plug in to one these ports which will allow wireless devices to connect easily to my home network.

Is there anything budget friendly that I can use? For what it's worth, I have an old gigabit switch lying around. Is there some way I could convert this into the product I need?

    Gigabit speed with VLANs

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 03:15 PM PST

    Hey there!

I am currently running a Netgear R7000 that was able to provide around 950 MBit up/down. After changing ISPs I had to activate PPPoE and Vlans, which dropped my (wired) network speed to about 350-450 MBits. As I have several heavy data consumers I want to saturate my WAN interface more ;)

Wifi: The R7000 is able to cover my whole flat, but slightly better coverage in the corners would be nice.

Required: * Ethernet: 4-7 ports + WAN * PPPoE * Vlans * Wifi: either better than the R7000 or none. I can place two wired APs to cover my flat if necessary * processing power to deal with 1Gbps connections * Nice to have: IDS / IPS, 8 ports

Budget: under 500 USD would be nice

Currently I have been eyeing the Asus AX88U for its CPU power and Merlin firmware. Ubiquiti stuff would also be appreciated, but the USG / Dream Machine appear to not provide 1GBps level of throughput when any of the additional features are switched on. Is that correct?

Should I be looking at some other products too?

    Home networking and gaming

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:25 PM PST

So right now this is my set up: Modem --> Netduma R1 --> Nightg Nighthawk. I use the Netduma R1 to manage the QoS, but through the time I have decided it's not working for me. My brother and I are strong gamers. He plays on Xbox and I play on PC. The problem is that when I'm on discord or when I'm watching Netflix and he is playing he gets huge ping spikes. Recently in the subreddit, I found a post talking about the Ubiquity Edge Router X and Ubiquiti Networks Unifi. I'm thinking about buying Edgerouter X and using my NightHawk as my router. I have 100 download speed and around 10 upload speed. What do you guys suggest?

help with home network refresh after 5 years

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:19 PM PST

Hi all - my router/wireless ap (ASUS RT-AC87U) is going on about 5 years old and I am thinking it's a good time to just refresh my hardware so my network can continue to function and grow and benefit from an overall hardware/implementation refresh. In terms of network "design" I'm asking myself a few questions about how I might organize things better for performance and stability as part of this refresh.

first a brief overview: * about 25 devices, 2 max streaming video to non-4K televisions (amazon fire and chromecast), 1 whole-home audio system running over chromecast with up to 6 ocncurrent devices at 320kbps , 6 consumer internet security cams, handful of amazon echo devices, handful of cheap IOT devices no gaming. no torrents. no ftps.
    * i estimate total average traffic levels at 15-20MBps and max maybe 30MBps total. i'm likely to go with a high end consumer "mesh" system to replace my current router + dated remote extender (recommendations appreciated!)

my questions: * is powerline and fixed IP going to give me more stability and performance for the video streaming set tops or at my 10-15MBps traffic load is that overkill? * I worry, and not sure if i should, about rogue IOT devices like smart plugs (i keep adding cheap ones at that!) broadcasting a ton and disrupting traffic and/or having security holes. is a VLAN overkill? * same question with a different tilt for the security cameras (blink and ring doorbell). i see these brands specifically as targets for mischief these days and maybe i should just VLAN them to be safe? worth the trouble? * i am going to be left with my old router which has two perfectly good radios on it. with the 2 in my new device should i consider segregating various wireless device groups on separate wireless channels (example all the security cams totger, all the IOT crap together, the whole home audio,..) to further reduce interference between them - or is this more trouble that the performance it is worth? * or will a wireless router of that age and likely a different brand than my new one incorporate incompatibilities and.or performance issues into the newer system and not be worth it's trouble . if it is worth incorporating into the new network is this piece of gear a good candidate for using Tomato or DD-WRT with my level of requirements or too much trouble? * is QoS on the router worth it for me to set up (I haven't on my existing gear)? is it a pain to get working right or is it fairly easy to get some benefit from?

If there's a theme I guess it's which stuff outside of the basics is most worth doing in my situation - the if it isn't broke don't over-engineer it principle. :->

    Access to Router Blocked

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:19 AM PST

I currently have Spectrum Internet and a Sagemcom F@st5260 router. My issue is that I can no longer access the router settings through the browser and every time I attempt to input the login info, it returns an incorrect information error. I have tried to factory reset the router, connect directly to it, all sorts of everything I can think of to access it and nothing has worked.

The only thing I can think of that could be causing this problem is that I had previously assigned my computer a static IP address and I believe had locked the 5Ghz band to only allow my desktop to connect to it and require everything else to connect to the 2Ghz. All of this was done using a different wireless network adapter than I currently am using. Would this cause these issues? Is there anyway to get around it as I don't currently have the ability to use the original network adapter I did this with.

I appreciate any help, thank you.

Help scoping materials for ethernet runs

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:01 PM PST

I recently purchased a home that is not wired with ethernet at all. I have a gigabit internet service that I would like to properly use, so I want to fully wire the home with ethernet ports. This is my first time doing this, and I've read posts on this sub to figure out generally what I need, but I'd like some outside insight before pulling the trigger on materials.

    Some facts:

    • Fiber enters the basement and is converted from optical on the same wall
    • I have a small room in the basement (where the telephone hub is) that I would like to convert to a server room (so I'd bring in internet from the wall to this room, and I would set up the router/switch/etc in this room, and feed out the runs from here)
    • I want to wire for two offices, an entertainment center, two access points, security cameras (probably 4), and potentially four bedrooms.
    • I'm hiring an electrician to do the work, and I can provide materials, so I'm mainly scoping for the materials he will need (vs tools to do the job)

Here's what I think I need to get:

    • CAT6 cable - maybe 1000ft?
    • Flexible conduit for the CAT6 cable (an equal amount?)
    • Wall plates for non-ap/camera connections (7)
    • Patch panel
    • Keystone jacks (#?)
    • Patch cables (I think 1 per run + router + switch?)

I read that having a dedicated breaker for the server room would be good in the long-term. Right now there's just one outlet in it. Opinions? For PoE and any potentially external cables (like for cameras) do I need anything specific?

Anything I'm missing? Thanks for any and all help - trying to learn as much as I can!
