Which Surface (or Convertible Clone) Should I Opt For?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 04:23 AM PST

Hello! 4th year (of 5) student in college, and I've been rocking an old refurbished Thinkpad T450 for my needs. I'm looking towards the future, and for my laptop needs, I think my next step is going to be something like a Surface (tablet with an attachable keyboard, in some shape or form). If I continue my studies, I think it will be more beneficial than a conventional clamshell. I don't need extremely high performance, likely some python and light image rendering, but it doesn't need to be blazing.

My biggest hurdle I'm feeling is in choosing one. Surface Book? Surface Pro? I feel like we were at Surface 4 yesterday, now we're on 7. How far back would be worth the money? As you can see by my current 10 year old laptop, I'm not afraid to scale back a couple generations to get a laptop worth my dollar. How much real difference in features will I notice between the generations? I feel like as far back as I should start is the Surface Pro 5 and work forward.

My price range I'm hoping to work within is the $500-600 range, but I could go a little outside that if it were really worth it. I'm really just trying to optimize my dollar here.

8 GB minimum, but I should probably think about more for longevity.

Is it too much to ask for a relatively strong i5 in it within that price?

Any specific features between surface models that would swing me one way or another?

And like I said, I'm open to other brand competitors. My friend had a Yoga and really liked it, I'm just more familiar with the surface, and it kinda iconified the style of convertible I'm talking about.

Thank you in advance for all help!

    Travel Laptop

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 03:58 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: $800 max. Vietnam or Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? 2 in 1 form factor would be nice, but portability is a deal breaker. middle ground between specs & battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you? weight and thinness aren't too much of a concern, form factor & portability are important. my largest electronic is a kindle, i live out of a 40L pack.

Which OS do you require? Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? 9-11in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing, light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, Fallout NV, Warcraft 3

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My search sent me looking at GPD P2 Max & Surface Go/Pro

    Laptop for a scientist

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 03:36 AM PST

Hi fellow laptop users! I am searching for a 13-14'' laptop that is light, cool and calm. The main purpose is writing.

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

My university would buy me any laptop, so money is not a concern. Austria.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Low temperature and low noise in great favor of performance.

Temperatures at the bottom should barely touch 40* C (104 F), the wrist restplace should be even cooler. Noise emission should be unhearable, the best design would be fanless.

For that, I am willing to sacrifice performance. Previously I was using Acer Swift 1 with N5000 CPU and 4GB of RAM and this was sufficient. This laptop sets the bar very high in terms of thermals and noise (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Swift-1-SF114-32-N5000-SSD-FHD-Laptop-Review.303606.0.html).

I would like a clamshell form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    This is an important concern.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I use Linux. I would like to avoid all Chromebooks. Any Windows or Macintosh hardware should be fine. If you know about any Linux incompatibilities in suggestions, please let me know!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13-14''. I need at least FHD resolution in IPS. The best display would be matt, however some glossy ones with low levels of reflectivity are also OK. Brightness can be average as I run it very low anyway.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Text editor and PDF viewer. Text editor is very customized, and the same goes for the process of creating a PDF, hence I must run Linux.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Mostly for typing

I do not use touchpad at all. Some touchpad designs have convex buttons in this area (such as Lenovo Thinkpads), and I would like to avoid these.

I find most key switches fine, and the priorities are in the keyboard layout. Keyboard layout must be ANSI (as opposed to ISO), i.e., shift must be right next to Z and enter must be next to the ' key. The Caps Lock is my most used key (I bind it to Control), and it must be placed next to A (e.g. Acer Switch 7 has the tilde key that separates these, and I would like to avoid such layouts). Arrow keys layout and delete/backspace are not of any concern.

    • My top choices at the moment are the following. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any good fanless options.

Matt display options (I like matt a bit more):

    1. Acer Swift 5 (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Swift-5-Laptop-Review-An-all-round-improvement-for-the-14-inch-ultrabook.449880.0.html)

    2. LG Gram (https://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-Gram-17Z990-i7-8565U-WQXGA-Laptop-Review.418092.0.html)

Glossy display options (I like glossy less):

    1. MacBook Air 2019 (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Apple-Macbook-Air-2019-in-Review-Now-with-True-Tone-but-the-fan-is-still-annoying.452644.0.html)

(however, I heard that the fan is not quiet)

    1. Microsoft Surface Laptop 3

(however, I heard that the screen is very reflective; this one has great 3:2 proportions)

    1. Lenovo Yoga C940 (https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Yoga-C940-14IIL-Laptop-Review-Premium-Ice-Lake-convertible-is-a-strong-competitor-for-the-Dell-XPS-13.438766.0.html#toc-emissions-good-speakers-not-a-lot-of-fan-noise-or-heat)

    Any comments are welcome!

900$ maximum, will buy in France or Belgium

    Posted: 03 Feb 2020 01:01 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 900$ maximum. I live in Belgium but could buy on Amazon FR.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I mostly want a good build and good connectivity. My laptop will mainly be used at my work station (connected to a screen and a keyboard.)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care, the laptop will stay mostly static in my office.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A? N/A

    • *Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? *

Nope, just text editing, web browsing, emails and so on.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality and durable connectivity. (My main problem with my current laptop is that connectivity has gotten pretty unreliable.)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi, so I work as a literary translator and freelance publisher. I mostly use my laptop for text editing. I have had a lenovo yoga 900 for 3 years + and I am mostly satisfied with it, except that lately the connectivity as started to give. (I have to reboot it multiple times before it connects to my screen, mouse and keyboard, it's a pain, sometimes I also have to reboot it to get it to charge at all.) The laptop has traveled a lot in my backpack and I haven't been very careful with it, so that might be why it's getting old so quickly.

I intend to keep the Yoga 900 as a travel and entertainment laptop (for torrenting, streaming and when I have to travel for work) and use the new one exclusively at my work station at home.

900$ is what I paid for the Yoga, I can pay the same amount now, but I'm guessing less will be enough this time, since I just want a strong laptop with a good build for office task and don't care about weight or size ?

Thank you so much for your advice !

Looking for a slim, sturdy gaming laptop with numerical keypad

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 06:58 PM PST

    * Total budget and country of purchase:

US and $1200 is a pretty firm upper ceiling.

    * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life (at least 3-4 hours under general use load, more would be preferable), best specs for money

    * How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very, I want something slim and under 5lbs. I travel with it for work and need to keep the weight of my gear under a strict limit.

    * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Win 10

    * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6"

    * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I run Photoshop and Illustrator 3 and typically 2 to 3 to 10 year old games

    * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I play Skyrim with lots of visual mods and an enb. I also play RDR2. I want high-ultra settings at 1080p and at least 30fps.

    * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I NEED a numerical keypad, this is make-or-break on any laptop no matter the other specs. I do a lot of data entry and I do not want to carry a USB one, it just isn't practical. I've looked at the Lenovo Y540, but the keypad is wonky and won't work. I also need a sturdy build quality. I work in remote locations for months at a time and simply cannot deal with a laptop that breaks. I'd also like a standard SD slot.

    * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Good color, and a bright 144hz or 120hz display would be very welcome, because I do graphics work. I also would like at least 500gb of storage in any format, but more would be better.

This basically needs to be a portable workstation that's capable of playing games. I don't have the financial means to have both a laptop and a desktop, and I certainly can't bring one with me when I'm at work anyway.

I had been looking at the Alienware M15 r1 during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, but it's now above my budget at minimum specs. I've also currently got a Dell Inspirion that's literally breaking apart at the seams, and started doing so within three months of buying it, so I'm a bit leery about Dell quality control.

    Thanks!

    Edit: formatting

    BEST laptop for music production

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 05:29 PM PST

I have seen tons of posts about which laptops are best for music production however I cannot find any reliable answers to this topic. I am looking into Ableton Live 10 for my program. Anyone out there who is currently producing/DJing that could give me some insight? Thanks!

p.s. I am aware that essentially gaming laptops would work for this but I am also looking for quality and long term use etc. Thanks ^-^

Joined a school 2700 us for computer is it best option?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2020 10:51 PM PST

Hey I have an offer to go to a school in the US California. They give out a bundle for an app development certificate, containing a google phone (5?) Macbook pro ( year N/A) and iPad (year N/A). I have seriously low budget for the school so I am taking out loans, possibly none with future scholarships. I dont own a credit card, and I absolutely want this to be right. I want to know if anyone is diversified in the buying and selling and exchange of electronics, and whether or not $2700 for new tools is going to be worth taking this course for app dev. Dont get me wrong, I want to learn everything there is. EVERYTHING. Macbook Pro is what I am in the market for, and it came at the right time. Plus I've been tablet life exec dev for a year or two now, and I look forward to more time doing what I love. I just dont post much and needed some reinforcement that I'm doing the right thing, thank you for your time in advance.

Looking for a laptop for school

I want to buy a laptop for school and also for general use.

Total budget and country of purchase:

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I want the best specs for the money. Battery life should be decent, but I would only use it for a couple of hours a day before I get home and charge.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important, I want a thin and light laptop I can carry around in my arm and hold in my arm while I use it.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows only, please.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13-15 in, nothing bigger or smaller.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will mostly be using it for web browsing, word typing, and some light gaming. Heavy games I will use Geforce NOW for, and I also have a gaming pc so I don't really care about gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I use Geforce NOW for most games, so it doesn't matter

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want at least 4 cores, 8gb of ram, and 256gb of SSD. It needs an SSD, at least 256gb if it only has an SSD or 128gb and HDD. 1920x1080 screen with decent quality. Good keyboard and build quality are important, I type a lot and I hate bad keyboards. A finger-print reader would be nice but not required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm kind of interested in the Lenovo Flex 14 2-1, but I've heard it's heavy and I saw that it has a 1440x900 resolution. Is it noticeably worse than a 1080p screen? I'm also interested in the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop.

Sorry if I sound rude or demanding.

I'm looking for a computer that's as durable and upgradable as my Thinkpad x200, runs Debian, and has a trackpoint.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Anything under $1500 (preferably on the lower end of that); United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Great battery life and decent specs. Could care less about it being a 2-in-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important. I want it to be light and low-profile, but I don't want thinness to sacrifice upgradability and I/O.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Debian GNU/Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer smaller screens, so 12.5 to 13 inches is my sweet spot.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a keyboard and trackpoint as good as my Thinkpad, with durable build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Edit: I'd also like to mention that I would be especially down for something that has Intel ME disabled and runs libre firmware like Coreboot or Libreboot and doesn't need nonfree wireless blobs.

Anyone know of any other adopters of the new Ryzen 4000 series mobile this year?

I'm looking at getting a laptop for college in the next 6 months and have been looking at the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 coming out in the next few months. That new 4800HS at its speculated price point is very interesting. Anyone know of any other SIs switching high end models to Ryzen?
