A non-gaming productivity laptop with a gamer in mind. Posted: 31 Jan 2020 10:35 PM PST Looking for some recommendations for laptops that are NOT used for gaming but are liked by people who appreciate the speed and quality of a well built and well thought out gaming PC. I need a separate laptop for when I am on the go for work and school. It would be used mostly for lighter data processing, excel, writing papers, research, web browsing and Netflix type streaming. Hoping to also have good battery life and good portability. In short, I'm looking for a laptop a PC gamer wouldn't be annoyed by that avoids all the silly pitfalls and inefficiencies of many pre-built PC's and laptops. Budget considerations would be in the $800-$1000 range. Maybe more or less if something really stands out. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Convertible for web browsing, Netflix and light CAD Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:05 AM PST Hey, I'm looking for a 2 in 1 for web browsing, Netflix and light CAD work. Total budget and country of purchase: About 800€ (but can be a little bit higher, if there is a reason for), in Austria. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? N/A Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light CAD work with ARCHICAD and AutoCAD. Other than that, just web browsing and Netflix. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch-screen, maybe including a pen. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Sometimes I would use it with a 4k monitor when there's more work to do. Maybe a Lenovo Yoga 530/S740, HP Spectre x360? Feedback is highly appreciated. (: [link] [comments] |

High performance laptop for Software Development Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:21 PM PST I'm going to get a top-end laptop for doing software development in the coming days. I basically need the most performant laptop I can get for 1.5k-2k. I'm thinking of getting this: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-20MF000LUS-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme/dp/B07HYXVWYP I've been told it is good. If anyone can suggest where I can get it for cheaper price or a better laptop please do! Thanks [link] [comments] |

Recommendation for student use laptop or Chromebook Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:39 AM PST Hello! I was hoping for some insight into what to purchase for a laptop (or Chromebook) which I will be using primarily for school. I have multiple eBooks, tests/homework to be completed online and an online course. I am interested in the "convertible" type laptops which can be used as a tablet or keyboard. I have seen some where the keyboard detaches completely which is nice. I am not opposed to it not being detachable, but am wondering how much of an issue damage to a keyboard is. I have had a Chromebook in the past which worked very well for me. I do most of my documents through google docs so I am not sure if having anything more than that would be overkill. I have a budget of appx $500 side note, I would not be angry at anything that is capable of playing the Sims (guilty pleasure and it's been so long!) Thank you for your help [link] [comments] |
[AUS]Is an Asus ROG FX505DT-AL043T good? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:43 PM PST I'm getting my sister a laptop, primarily for school but other things as well, and i wanted to know if thats a decent laptop for longevity and battery life. she has been known to drop things, but also managed to make an iphone 6 last 2 years without so much as a crack with no screen protector so...i guess that puts her above average, but it breaking in the middle of an important school project would be catastrophic because replacing it instantly is not in the budget. The one i plan to get is 1200 AUD, and another must is that it can be bought physically, not online. Apparently i have a few days to make the final decision instead of today like id planned on, so if theres a better idea, i am open to it. also follow up, the gtx 1650 it comes with, how does that stack up to the gtx 1060 i have? is it better or does it being a laptop card take away any gain it would have. Should I upgrade from a Nvidia 730m to a Vega 8 laptop? Any suggestions? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:24 AM PST My budget is under £400. I don't spend more than that on a laptop because i travel a lot and i have to consider damage and theft. Also, don't see any point in having less than 8gb of ram. 4gb just doesn't cut it. It will be used for some last gen gaming at decent framerates (res doesn't matter) and music/video production. Minimum screen size 14 inches. Oh and it needs to weigh less than 2kg aswell, the lower the better.
Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
A cheap ThinkPad for a Hackintosh? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:55 AM PST Hi, I wanted to find a laptop on a budget, specifically a ThinkPad, because of their good compatibility with macOS. So anyway, I was looking for a laptop with an IPS display, preferably 1080p. No discrete graphics (because it doesn't work in macOS anyway), so just intel integrated graphics. A dual core, maybe quad core cpu. And it's important for me for it to be portable, in the sense that it should be relatively thin and not too heavy. And I only have like 250$ (300$ top in case there's a really good deal) to spend. It doesn't need to be powerful, just to run an IDE properly, and some browsing. So what ThinkPad should I choose? Or maybe there is some other laptop that has the aforementioned specs and also has decent hackintosh support. But ThinkPad would be nice, because I also want to run Linux, and I'm not sure there are a lot of laptops with good both Linux and macOS compatibility other thank Thinkpad (at least as far as I'm aware). thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Will this simple suffice for basic use? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 09:14 PM PST I'm as business student in the US with a budget of up to $700. I have been looking at 14" laptops for school. Don't really play many games (Maybe some league). Mostly focused on build quality and bang for the buck. I have been looking at the Thinkpad E495 but would appreciate any suggestions, thanks! [link] [comments] |
HP Envy x360 13” - why SHOULDN’T I? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:43 AM PST Hello Aussie redditors, I'm semi IT literate, but get overwhelmed by all the options. Looking for a new lappy to play with Netflix, Microsoft office use, web browsing, would be nice to use for drawing (Microsoft ink). Why shouldn't I buy this one? Is there better out there? Had a feel of one at JB this arvo, and seems quite good. My must haves: - 13" - ultrabook & 2 in 1 - $1500 aud ish - at least 1 USB type A https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-envy-x360-13-ar0018au-13-3-inch-2-in-1-laptop.html Cheers! [link] [comments] |
Buy from a brick-and-mortar store (like bestbuy) or online at amazon? Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:11 AM PST I was considering buying a NEW laptop for personal use. Was considering buying online from Amazon as I think prices for some models may be lower on amazon (true?), but Returns can be an issue if one doesn't like the laptop.

Ultrabook to replace Zenbook UX330UA, under $1000 USD, 13-14" Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:09 PM PST Since mid 2017 I've been using a wonderful Asus Zenbook UX330UA, but my car was broken into and it was stolen tonight. The battery was pretty much gone anyway.... So I'm looking for something similar but a bit more powerful and updated in whatever ways that the tech has advanced in the last couple years. I do a lot of reading and writing on my laptops. I like Zenbooks because they're affordable and in my experience have been durable, but I'm open to other options, even a 2-in-1. Is there anything that really stands out? [link] [comments] |

HP Pavilion Gaming 15, Asus TUF FX505, or Lenovo Legion Y530? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:05 PM PST Hi everyone! I've just discovered this sub, sorry if I shouldn't be posting this particular question here. I'm heavily considering getting a new laptop for daily and work purposes, with gaming performance in mind. I'm in Indonesia, so the specs/hardware of these laptops available here may slightly vary from what you folks in the States have. In terms of price, they all sit at around 735 USD, varying only with a 10 dollar range. Legion Y530:

EMMC or SSD? For Students doing google office/drive work and browsing Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:03 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: £250 UK Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Best spec for the money. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very much. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer Chrome OS as it's supposedly faster. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 11-12 for portability and weight, going into stores to try out today. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just University office/google drive work. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? To plug into my bigger monitor if possible. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi there. Could I have some help? I am a student with a tight budget. Is the extra money worth an SSD in my case? This https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7883811 or https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2250827 I could also find a 64gb chromebook for around £220 or so too. Or maybe I'm thinking of the 14inch versions. The price bracket seems competitive. I was hoping to get a cheap chromebook and be happy with how fast chromebooks supposedly are, and I think I would prefer the lighter and smaller 11-12 inch chromebooks because of portability. p.s. I forgot about connecting to my University's wifi. I'm sure I'll be get the wifi password and stuff if I ask the tech peeps at the office. But I'll also be at my own home too, of which I love my broadband. Always reliable and fast. lol sorry [link] [comments] |

So yeah, the main criteria that I'm looking for in a laptop from most to least important (although they are all of significant importance) is:
I've been researching laptops for a few days, and I believe I'm getting close to a decision, just wanted to if y'all had any advice. Right now the front runner for me is the MSI PS63 Modern (Price is in CAD btw), which seems to have everything I'm looking for in a laptop. If anyone has any personal opinions on the ps63, I'd be happy to hear it, as well as any laptops similar to the ps63. Thanks in advance for the help fellas! [link] [comments] |

Is it worth it to buy the newer models over the older ones? Main concern is which offers the best production for the price. Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Seeking processing power and portability Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:27 PM PST Hello, I am seeking a laptop with basically the most processing power possible. I also plan to travel quite a bit in the near future so size factor and weight also play an important role. I don't really want a dedicated graphics card. Also, the more ram the better of course. I will be using it mostly to do music production and very basic online college stuff. Right now im using a i5-7400 and 24gbs of Ram. I bought a stick to go from 8 to 24 and the difference is huge for me, so 8 would only be good if I can easily upgrade but I would really prefer more. I would also seriously enjoy a processor faster than a i5-7400, I nearly push this to the limit in a lot of tracks im making.
