Add timer for changing between the light and dark windows theme.

I would love to combine this with night lights when it gets darker / close to sleep.

Windows 7 free upgrade time running out

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST

Support for Windows 7 is expiring soon. I found that you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from 7 Pro for free. Some are now saying that this free route will end on 14th January. Can anyone confirm this?

"Your Phone" companion app works, but text notifications won't appear on taskbar?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:58 PM PST

    Hey all.

I ditched Pushbullet to save a few bucks a month. I set up the Your Phone app with my Note 9 and it won't show text notifications in the action center (no pop up near the taskbar).

I can send, view, and receive texts from Your Phone and I can see text notifications if I manually check the Your Phone notification tab. Other notifications such as the email app and Twitch get a pop up notification on my taskbar, but texts will not.

I've checked my notification settings and everything is on. Focus mode is off. I'm not sure what's preventing a pop up from alerting me of a new text?

EDIT: My texting app is Textra. I'm not sure if that matters since this seems like a Windows side problem, since I can send, receive, and view texts and notifications if I manually check Your Phone.

How to connect automatically to VPN (win10)?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:13 PM PST

I use the build in win 10 VPN service. However I recognized, that sometimes my computer logs out of the VPN without notifying me.

I want it to be set up so that it always connects to the VPN when I'm logged in the same wifi network.

    How can I do that?

Windows 10 Issues related to UAC

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:35 PM PST

If I turn on UAC and then open up notepad and try to save a file to the C drive or download a file from the internet, I get this error: "A required privilege is not held by the client".

Okay. Easy fix. I can go through UAC in control panel and disable it and then go through regedit to disable the EnableLUA option. Done. Problem solved.

But now when I go to the built-in Windows 10 apps like calculator or photos, I now get this error: "calculator can't be opened using the built-in administrator account".

The solution to this is to disable UAC. My account is already listed as administrator and it's the one I created when installing Windows 10 for the first time, so it's hardly the "built-in" account.

I'd prefer to keep UAC disabled. Anyone have a solution?

Win10 - No more abilty to hotspot and use Ethernet at same time?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:54 PM PST

    H ey guys,

I typically use a laptop with either WiFi or Cellular for internet (typically so we can remote into a machine) in parallel with an Ethernet cable plugged in to another network (with default gateway removed, to force Windows to use the Wireless for WAN traffic. ) to use as a jumpbox or when I need to remotely configure something.

I"ve noticed that I'm no longer able to do this.

Windows appears to now prioritise Ethernet traffic over WiFi , which priorities over Cellular, and this seems to be hard coded as you can't adjust the priority anymore using the advanced network property settings.

I even check the routing table and the default route is set to the Wireless connection, but Windows just doesn't use it.

You had the option previously to do it manually via

    http://ecross.mvps.org/howto/change-network-connection-priority-in-windows-10.htm

But now even this whole tab is removed from newer builds. I'm not sure exactly when this occured.

This is a huge problem for me now.
I've tried with like 5 different laptops/brands/models and all have the same issue.

    Anyone know anything about this?

Multiple missing .dll files for different programs

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:51 AM PST

Multiple missing .dll files for different programs

Today I tried to open Davinci Resolve and got a missing DLL error for VCOMP120.dll. Also, I checked the epic games store to see if there was a new free game and it had a missing DLL error too, but for XINPUT1_3.dll. I tried running regsvr32 for both DLLs, but neither worked and just threw errors.

I'm worried I may have a virus, as I installed a couple programs last night and it only started happening this morning, but I didn't see any warnings from windows defender about something potentially harmful. I've tried other programs, like Discord, SteamVR and VMware, but so far these are the only two throwing errors. I've tried reinstalling Resolve but nothing changed.

Yes, I restarted my computer, and no, I haven't run any "Windows 10 bloatware purge" scripts. Here are the exact errors I'm receiving. The error on the left is what I get when I run regsvr32. It looks the same for both VCOMP12 and XINPUT1_3:

I've googled around for this, but couldn't find anyone with the same problem as I'm having, and most of the things I found on google were just third party driver updaters which I know to not ever touch. Any help is appreciated.

    Troubleshooting

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:22 PM PST

After accidentally shutting down my laptop during an update (which started when restarting my laptop), every time I try and start up my laptop, it comes up with a blue screen and two prompts - "Turn of your PC" or "Troubleshoot".

The Recovery Manager has not worked and says factory resetting it will work but I don't want to do that option. Going into Advanced Options nothing works as well, trying to uninstall previous updates doesn't work and says "something went wrong", System Restore does nothing and leads me back to the main screen and doing anything else displayed does the same.

The only option left is to factory restore it and I don't want to lose all my files. Please help!

please help, peer-to-peer issue isolated to one person

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:19 PM PST

I have had this issue for years:
any p2p-based game does not allow me to play with one specific friend of mine. He can play with others and I can play with others, but if we try to play together the game does not work. We do not have eachother blocked on our firewalls, we have tried uPnP, we have tried rerolling to older versions of Windows, and we have tried port forwarding. It seems as if our ISPs are simply blocking communication between us.

Connecting to servers and communicating via them works perfectly.

I should also mention that the issue is related to our networks: while at our respective colleges we are able to game together perfectly fine. The issue returns when we come home. He completely rebuilt his network from the ground up recently, and the issue persists.

Help with booting up second os

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:54 PM PST

I just finished installing a Linux distro because windows 10 lags a lot on my PC. After the installation, I restarted the system but it booted back into windows.

I tried going into the UEFI setting and booting into the OS but I get the error "Selected boot image did not authenticate". I honestly don't understand what that means. I went on the web and did a couple of research. Figured out I was supposed to disable secure boot in the bios but I'm asked to enter a passcode to confirm the changes.

And therein lies the problem, I type the code but nothing shows on the screen, please does anyone have any idea cause I've been stuck with this issue for the past 4hrs

Can I use my current product key on a VM?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 05:49 PM PST

I have my machine set up to dual boot a linux distro along with Windows 10. I pretty much never use the Windows side, but there's a single piece of software that I'd like to use that simply won't run on linux, even with WINE.

My question is, would I be able to set up Windows in a virtual machine and use the product key from my current Windows partition on my computer?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, and thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you can offer!

Windows 10- Cannot connect two computers to a network for the life of me

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:56 AM PST

Hello there Reddit, I am in desperate need of assistance here.

Basically, I have two computers in separate rooms that use the same router, both connected via ethernet wires. They were connected to the same network and we had file sharing on to, well, share files. One computer had an issue where it started crashing and it was hard to tell why. We deleted gpu drivers, scanned for malware, and nothing was solving it so eventually we reinstalled windows and removed all files in the process. That didn't work either, so we began to look to the hardware (which the reliability monitor claimed was the issue at one point- but that thing isn't super 'reliable' regardless). Pulling out the gpu seemed to solve it, so we tested a different one and removed everything with the word nvidia on it. Thankfully, that seemed to do the trick.

Unfortunately, after we wiped windows, the computers were no longer on the same network. We updated both so they're both on Win10 version 1909 (the newest one). Once again, they're on the SAME ROUTER via ETHERNET. I have no clue what the issue is. The one PC (which we would consider to be the main computer) is on 'Network'. The other computer is on 'Network 2'. Tf windows? I have yet to find a solution to the problem even through my extensive google efforts.

Another thing to add is the 'Network' PC is on a different workgroup than the 'Network 2' PC but I can't even tell if that's the issue because they would have to be on the same network to switch workgroups, right?

Someone please save me. Any links to webpages would be appreciated as well.

    Update_notifier on task manager

Hello, recently I have noticed a startup program on task manager called Update_notifier, I couldn't help notice that it looked sketchy and immediately disabled it, a picture of it is below:

Could anyone clarify if the file has any malicious intent, or is it completely safe?

    The file nsoD0C9.tmp

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 06:32 AM PST

    The file nsoD0C9.tmp

I started up my computer to receive the 'how do you want to open this file' - this immediately frightened me and so I went to virus-total to scan it, and behold one engine detected it, the picture is attached below:

    https://preview.redd.it/3d3vnij7qk841.png?width=1873&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1771589195b08c2a5b908f37ea29010ee3ed5ed

The file is called nsoD0C9.tmp, it might be a false positive but I just wanted to be sure from you guys. Do you have any ideas on what this file is or what it does or just might be Windows' own files.
