    Simple Questions - January 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

can i just take a moment to say that this community is wholesome and helpful af

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:05 AM PST

like, this community is just dedicated to helping people, I've heard such stereotypical things like how "pc gamers are elitist" or whatever but honestly, everyone here has been so helpful and open-minded in literally every way. Nobody here has ever been like, "Wow, your build is stupid, mine is better" like some people think pc gamers do, and overall this community is just great. 10/10

$85 new for essentially a Ryzen 5 2600. AMD is killing it right now. This seems to me like an insane budget deal. Gamers Nexus has a great video reviewing the CPU

The "so you just got some Christmas money and you want to build yourself a PC but you're on a budget but you still want it to be good" parts list.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 10:04 AM PST

This list isn't just for people who just got some Christmas money and want to build a PC but are on a budget but still want it to be good, but also for anyone who is on a budget and wants to build a PC but still wants it to be good.

With the release of the R5 1600AF, I thought it would be fun to put together a low budget PC build that doesn't really cut corners and will be a very strong performer at 1080p. This build comes out to just shy of $600.

Anybody know how to get a 2nd Gen Ryzen CPU to update Bios on Motherboard?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:12 PM PST

I have a Ryzen 5 3600 along with a MSI X470 Gaming Plus coming in the mail. Even though it said in the description that they support 3rd Gen CPU, I've read that that's not true and I need to have a 2nd Gen Ryzen CPU in order to update it. Is there a way for me to get one for free? Or can I go to a store like Best Buy, buy one, update the Bios, and then return it for a refund?

What are the best upgrades for a low/medium end Gaming PC, so that it can run heavy (modded) games like Skyrim more smoothly?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:20 PM PST

About 4 years ago I built the PC I'm still using, and it's still doing a fantastic job. However, heavily modded games (I'm talking about you, Skyrim) don't run very smooth. I know this partially is caused by the fact that I simply have too many mods which probably aren't all installed perfectly. But since my PC isn't exactly top-tier I figured making some hardware changes could help as well. The parts:

    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz

    GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 480 - NITRO+ - 4GB

    RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport - DDR3-1600 - 2x4GB

    Motherboard: Asrock H97M Anniversary

I'm using an SSD for Windows and an external harddrive for my games and mods (the reasoning behind this was that I could play games on my laptop, which I actually never do anymore)

The first thing I definitely am going to do is change the external harddrive for a SSD, unfortunately it seems my motherboard doesn't support NVMe (correct me if I'm wrong!) but a SATA one will do wonders as well I guess. This upgrade probably won't change that much except for faster loading speeds and things like grass/textures loading quick enough in game. So I was wondering, what is the best thing to upgrade? As I mentioned it mostly concerns Skyrim, games like the Witcher run at about 45-60 fps, which I'm fine with. Skyrim sometimes just freezes for a moment and then continues normally (well, don't know if I want to call 25-45 fps normal actually). When playing Skyrim task manager says that 100% of both RAM and my GPU are being used. Should I swap to 2x8 GB RAM or is it wise to buy a new GPU? Or maybe just build a new PC because this one already is "to outdated" for the best GPU's and SSD's? After looking up some stuff online that sure seems tempting :)

Also as a side node, for my studies/job I need to render a lot of images, so anything that boosts my Skyrim playability and render speeds at the same time would be perfect!

Can I build and power up my PC without a case?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 09:50 AM PST

Hello all! All the parts have arrived for my first build!! Well, except for the case. I planned on building it tonight / tomorrow, but New Egg is running behind on delivering the case.

Are there any negatives to building the entire PC without the case for now? I was hoping I could put it together, get into the BIOS and maybe install the operating system and drivers. That way when the case arrives, all I have to do is screw it in and go.

Or should I just be patient and wait for the case?

Almost Ready For My First Build. Wanted My Build Checked Before Starting.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:55 PM PST

So I almost have all my parts to start my build. The only components I'm missing is a case and GPU. This was the build I have been going off of and just wanted to have it checked here before I actually start anything. I plan on doing 1080p 144hz gaming and playing some AAA games as well: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8zmbp8

Also, I'm starting to go back and forth on an AMD Graphics card or NVIDIA card as I heard some people having issues with AMD, so any info on the difference would be helpful.

Red Devil 5700XT and R5 3600 temps question

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:57 PM PST

what are unsafe temps for both? right now both my CPU and GPU are running at about 75 degrees after an hour and a half under load (running stock cooler). they're in the h510 elite so airflow isn't the best but i was just wondering if these temps were normal. also, should i do any adjusting to the fan curve of the GPU?

Stuck in "Preparing Automatic Repair" Loop

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:59 PM PST

To preface, sorry that the attached images are such poor quality, my phone's camera isn't working properly. Also, sorry for the bad formatting; I'm on mobile.

I have an MSI B250M Gaming Pro, and I needed to update the BIOS. Before I started, it was running a version labelled E7A65IMS.110 (sorry, I don't have an image for this). The version I updated to was labelled 7A65v18 on MSI's website and shows up as this in the BIOS menu.

When I tried to boot into windows, it briefly showed this screen while loading. In case you can't read it, it says "Preparing Automatic Repair." It normally shows a similar screen, the only difference being the black band with the text on it. From there it showed this screen, which I believe is the windows advanced boot options screen.

After a bit of googling, I've found some posts where other people with MSI motherboards are having similar issues, though most of them describe a completely black screen instead of the typical MSI loading screen. Additionally, they all say that the computer immediately rebooted after showing that screen instead of moving onto the blue one. The only solution I've found that I can actually do with my hardware is resetting the BIOS to its default settings, but it was already on its default settings.

Selecting "Continue" causes the computer to reboot and do the same thing: it displays "Preparing Automatic Repair" and moves on to the blue screen.

Selecting "Use a Device" yields a similar blue screen whose only option is a button that says "Hard Drive." When I select that option, it attempts to boot from my hard drive (which is not my boot drive) and yields this screen, which means that it (predictably) failed to boot.

Under "Troubleshoot" there are two options: "Reset this PC" and "Advanced Options." Under the first one, these are yet another two options: "Keep My Files" and "Remove Everything." They lead to this screen and this screen, respectively. Under "Advanced Options" there is this screen. Selecting "System Restore" predictably leads to this error message since I haven't created any restore points. "Go Back to the Previous Version" leads to this error message, presumably because it's been a while since I've updated windows. I don't have an image of my OS, and selecting that option gives me a n error message that reminds me if that. "Startup Repair" yields this error message, and the "Advanced Options" button on that screen just leads to the first screen. My command prompt skills are pretty sub-par, so I doubt I'd be able to use that to figure this out on my own. That being said, if you have a solution that uses command prompt, I'd be happy to give it a try. Selecting "UEFI Firmware and Settings" predictably opens the BIOS.

I'm at a complete loss as to what to do here, it seems literally everything is a dead end. I'd like to avoid reinstalling windows if possible since I don't know where my activation key is.

TL;DR: I updated the BIOS on my MSI motherboard, and now it says "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then loads into the Windows advance boot settings. Selecting "Continue" reboots the computer and does the same thing.

Edit: My system specs are as follows: - Processor: Intel Core i5 7400 (non-k) worh stock cooler - Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 1050 SC 2GB - Motherboard: MSI B250M Faming Pro - RAM: 16GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz (running at 2144MHz because that's the fastest my BIOS will let me run it) - Boot Drive: WD Black SN750 500GB NVMe SSD - Secondary Drive: WD Blue 2TB hard drive at 5400 RPM - Tertiary Drive: ADATA SU800 128GB SSD (this is empty) - Power Supply: Corsair CX750M (semi-modular) Sorry about the bad formatting of this list, reddit won't show the line breaks for some reason.

What happens if you swap the CPU_FAN and SYS_FAN for 2 years?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:57 PM PST

I'm currently trying to diagnose what is causing my 2-years-old PC to fail to turn on. By replace'n'testing, I'm already discarded the chance of being everything else other than the mobo and cpu.

By breadboarding and turning the mobo on without connecting the 8-pin CPU power connector, I've managed to turn the system on (without post or boot of course), which is something I'm unable to do with the 8-pin connected.

With that being said, I noticed that the CPU cooler was plugged on the SYS_FAN (Chassis Fan) instead of the CPU_FAN since I've build it. Because of that, the CPU might not being receiving proper cooling, specially while it's on load which could mean that it's lifespan was greatly reduced due to this slip of mine. Could that be the case?

    SFF case help/suggestions

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:48 PM PST

    Hey Reddit!

Not new to building, but I am new to compact builds, most everything I've built before has been full size, but as I've recently moved to a place with less room for a full or mid tower, I've decided to go ITX.

My current parts list is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vvHvRk I'm also considering adding an additional 1tb 2.5in SSD, just waiting for something good to go on sale again.

But I'm having a difficult time deciding on a case. I'd really prefer something with a traditional layout but designed to be used with a SFX PSU (by traditional I mean no GPU riser cable so I can run a larger CPU cooler as I have a wraith prism sitting on a shelf from a build I did for a friend, PSU basement, some cable management space etc). But most cases I'm finding are either sandwich style or bigger than I'd like, ala nzxt h210

So I'm turning to you all for advice. Is there anything out there that's a standard layout but designed specifically for SFX PSUs? I'm aware of cases on taoboa (c24, k77, etc) and they seem alright, but aren't what I had in mind.

So what say you Reddit, does my case exist or am I going to have to fire up AutoCAD?

    Thanks!

EDIT: price range is preferably sub $200usd. I'd like to have some front panel capability like at least one USB 3.

After setting up my fans with the controller . I saw the wire glow super red and melted the plastic. What am I doing wrong ? It has no manual to say which fan should go in first as I think this is what made it burn and fry the controller .

How to check if RAM or GPU has kicked the bucket

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:46 PM PST

So I've slowly started having crashing issues within the game I spend most of my time, WarThunder. They just updated the game and are known for shoddy updates so I figured this is a 'them' problem. I made sure my drivers are up to date, I don't have a anti-virus that conflicts with their anti-cheat program, I even cleared the games cache. Still crashing enough where I can't even start a match. The crash reports have been inconsistent, blaming everything from RAM to specific vehicle texture files for the crash. Other games have been working fine up until today when Automation outright blamed its crash on GPU memory.

What can I do to troubleshoot RAM and GPU? And if I can determine that it is one or the other (I'm not as worried about RAM at this point) I need need a recommendation for a GPU that will still work with my AsRock X370 MoBo; I don't have money for a total upgrade now.

I appreciate any advice or insight you guys can give.

Rumors about Nvidia releasing another generation of cards kind of make me want to wait a bit longer. I already have a used 1060 gb that should hold out for a while, but have considered upgrading. Should I upgrade now or hold on to my money

Does the wraith prism cooler for the 3900x come with the motherboard mounting clips?

I have a ryzen 2600 in my plex server. My friend just bought a 3900x and gave me his wraith prism cooler since it's beefier than the stealth. I just went to install it and can't find the mounting brackets in the cooler box. Is it supposed to be included?
