    Simple Questions - January 02, 2020

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Turned 16 years old Today and Finished my first PC build last week.

I just want to give a huge thank you to everyone in this community for helping me out and being very non-toxic and friendly to me even with my dumb questions. It feels so good to build a computer and for it to actually work so once again, thanks a ton to you guys.

Why do parts always go on sale right after you buy?!?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:48 AM PST

Pretty much the title. Just ordered all my parts for a new build (first one in like 6 years) and of course today I wake up to an email from Newegg for a 2700x for 135, which is just 5 dollars more than I paid for my 2600x. Not a huge upgrade I know, but I would have liked the nicer cooler.. Anyone else get buyers remorse when they see sales like this?

Did I make a bad choice?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:15 AM PST

Just like in my last post I have the lynx level 1 from digital storm but the games I run I'm getting like low FPS and with the money I have left I bought a rx 560 was this a bad choice because I feel like I don't see any improvement with the build. I could see that builds that have the rx 560 with like a i3 cpu could run rust and other games fine but I can't ? I have a ryzen 5 3400g is this processer not good enough to run games like that?

Sorry if I have a lot of questions this is my first real gaming pc

If you're not looking for the cutting edge components, right now is a very good time to upgrade.

I built a rig for a friend over the holidays, and thought I'd share:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Motherboard ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $78.98 @ Newegg
    Memory G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $59.99 @ Newegg

    Total $882.88

    That's:

    • A 6 core/12 Thread Ryzen CPU
    • A B450 futureproof motherboard
    • 16GB of DDR4 3200 memory from GSkill
    • 512GB SSD space for Windows + a lot of games
    • 1660 Ti which will give you 80-90fps in most AAA titles at 1080p
    • An amazing tempered glass case
    • A 500W Semi-Modular PSU from EVGA to cut down on clutter
    • An MSI 1080p 144hz VA panel gaming monitor from MSI with height and pivot adjustments (and built like a tank!)

You can also substitute the 1080p panel with a 1440p 75hz panel as the 1660 Ti can handle games like Witcher 3 at 1440p 60 fps with hairworks off. I spent considerably more for a 7700k + GTX 1070 setup just two years ago.

Why don’t case makers move the glass to the right side of the case

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:16 AM PST

I feel like the clear side of the case should be on the right since most people are right handed and more likely to use the right side of the table for the mouse.

I'd Like to make the Switch. Help a guy out with a build on where to start?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:54 AM PST

Hi there, quick blurb - then what I'd like to do with PC/what im looking for. Any help or builds are appreciated!

30 year old - long time console user - intermediate computer knowledge. I'd like to make a switch to PC just because that seems to be where gaming is going in general, and most of the games I can play on my XBOX I can play on a PC. Competitve/Casual Gamer - Love Shooters and BRs. I'd also like to get into some streaming and video editing.. at the very least, the ability to make clips of games and save them for an extended period of time. Game for like 3-4 hours a day. I am also a graphic designer, love colors and customization (go figure). I am a family man, so there isn't a BIG BIG budget for a pc. I'd say my range would be anywhere from $500 - $1200. I've watched quite a few build vids my favorite are from Linus Tech Tips.. So I feel fairly confident I can build one. I just don't know what I need based on my situation and I am hoping that is where you guys can come in and help steer me towards.

Your opinions on a higher wattage PSU than needed?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:38 PM PST

So I'm planning on a i5-9600k, z390, 2080ti upgrade soon, to go into my pc with an already existing custom water loop. I happened to find a decent deal on a almost new EVGA supernova 1300 G2 and decided to buy it to hold onto until the build, I'm wondering if I should just use it or sell it for a lower wattage supply?

How much of a difference will running it below peak efficiency be?

    Question - Dual System

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:53 PM PST

Hello, I'm building my dual system currently in one case.

Both systems will be running off the phantecks revolt 1200W power supply.

The main question i have is, i'd like 3 fans to power the mini itx system. This system is mainly for plex and some other smaller workloads. The rest of the fans i'd like to be powered by the main system. This part is obvious and easy to do.

The part that I'm curious about is, while 3 fans will be powered by one motherboard, another 8 or so will be powered by the other. can i connect all the RGB to ONE motherboard (using corsair commanders).

Would the RGB being connected to one motherboard and the power to the fans being connected to another cause issues?

If this does not make sense let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

GPU came covered with orange dust! Is this rust? Should I just ship it back? Photos included.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:51 PM PST

I ordered this MSI Gaming X 1070 from eBay recently and it just came. It is covered with this orange dust all over, and especially on the inside (might be hard to see from the photos).

It looks like I can just blow it away with dust cleaner, but is this orange dust a sign of rusting? Will I short my motherboard by attempting to use the GPU? I'm thinking I should just ship it back and get my refund.

Is it possible to build a quiet air cooled PC for AAA gaming?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:12 AM PST

My i9 9900kf cooled with a Noctua NH-d15 and EVGA ftw3 2080 super get louder than I like when under load. I have 6 140mm noctua fans(1 rear 2 top exhaust and 3 front intake) trying to help but I just can't get my parts cool enough to lower the fans. Do I really need to use a custom air cooler on my gpu?

My gpu is stock and runs at 80 degrees under load with 50% fans and my i9 boosted at 4.7 runs ~70 degrees but the noctua barely makes noise so it's mainly a GPU problem.

    ITX Build AIO fan direction?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:39 AM PST

Hey guys I'm currently building in an ITX case with space for only one 240mm AIO mounted on the top. I'm wondering since there is no rear fan, should I be making these fans exhaust? Or would an intake be better? In case anyone is wondering, the case is the A60 by Geeek.

    Wanting to Build a PC

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes I have read the rules.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I plan to game with the PC focusing on games such as Rainbow Six Siege, and League of Legends. Not only would I like to game but also be able to record and have good frames. The highest quality game I need to play is Monster Hunter: World.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm looking for anything over 180 frames, 1920x1080 Screen Res, and looking for anything in the range of Ultra to high in games like Rainbow Six Siege.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My budget is anything under 1200 dollars CAD at this time.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I'll be purchasing all the parts from Canada and maybe from online sources shipping from the USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I really know very little when it comes to computers so here's a rough draft.

CPU: Intel Core i7-9700k 3.6 GHz 8-core Processor CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU cooler Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING ATX LGA1151 Memory: Corasir Vengance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM (Internal Hard Drive) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8 GB Video Card Case: Fractal Design Mashify C ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Operating System: Microstoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm not sure if this is everything or too much but hopefully its something that can be worked on.

    Memory not using all speed

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 12:35 PM PST

hey guys, i have a question about memory usage. I recentely built a new pc and when i wanted to overclock the memory, i did some testing in heaven benchmark using msi afterburner to monitor the memory speed. After i set my memory speed to 2666 mhz, i did a benchmark and msi afterburner stated that the modules were only utilizing 2000 mhz. is this normal? or is this some issue within msi afterburner?

what graphics card do i buy?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:16 PM PST

    hello all!

i've had my gaming PC for quite some time now and it's been not too long, but I think long enough since I upgraded my components. currently, i am running an i7-8700k CPU, 16GB RAM and a 1060 GTX. i'm no expert when it comes to building PC's, as i had an old friend build my current build; so i have come here to confirm what graphics card i should buy.

i do not play heavy games. literally only playing World of Warcraft, League of Legends; and other Riot / Blizzard games. Blizzard have a few games coming out potentially in the next year such as Overwatch 2, Diablo 4; which are games I really want to make sure my PC can run at max settings. i don't believe my current 1060 could.

i have asked some friends, they believe I should buy the RTX 2080 Super Windforce OC 8GB for $1149 AUD - keep in mind my budget is around the $1000 AUD mark

i am just not too sure if the games i play need an RTX card? or even the games i want to play? i understand they are powerful components, and I don't really want to buy one if the games I play are only using half of its potential. so with that in mind, what do the experts of building pc's think i should do?

on a side note, since living in Australia where it gets quite hot, I've also decided to upgrade some fans - perhaps installing a water cooler. what are some of the best cooling systems on the market right now, that won't destroy my bank account.

    thankyou so much guys!

So my new PSU apparently fried my HDD

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:54 PM PST

My brother recommended me a new Power Supply since my old one is a cheap-ish old Thermaltake.

So I bought a Seasonic 550w Platinum and after the PSU didn't work, my HDD didn't work anymore either (tried another drive on the same connection and it works fine)

Now I have two questions: is there any chance to save my data from the old drive apart from spending hundreds of dollars for data recovery?

Second: Is a Sandisk SSD Plus 1TB a good reliable replacement? The drive will serve as a gaming and program drive.

I might have screwed up big time. Possible AMD B450 Gaming Plus MAX/Ryzen 5 3400G problem

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:53 PM PST

So all of my PC parts came in the mail, finally. Today was the day I would build my first computer. I've been dreaming of this day for years now. But now that it's here, I think I truly fucked up. So I the first problem arose when I went to pull the retention arm back. A tiny piece of plastic by the Locked and Unlocked symbols broke off, and I pulled the arm all the way back. In retrospect, this was likely a horrible idea. But I didn't think anything of it. So I went on watching a build video and put in my CPU. Easy peasy, I thought. Except it wasn't. It rocked back and forth. I got scared, did a quick Google search, and confirmed that this probably wasn't normal. I definitely lined up the triangles, before anyone asks. So i tried reseating it a few times, with the retention arm at different angles. No luck. I read that maybe applying a tiny amount of force to the center of the CPU would help, I tried and pulled the retention arm about 1/3 of the way down...and I heard creaking. I flipped out and slowly undid the arm, and took the CPU out. I fervently checked for bent pins, and I didn't find any, but I'm still scared that I really fucked up. Any and all help is very very welcome.

Edit: all problems fixed! Bent pin is no more, and that fixed both the rocking and the creaking I saw/heard. Thank you all

    Graphics Card Monitor Combo

    Posted: 02 Jan 2020 04:02 PM PST

I just built a PC not too long ago and want to use it for gaming. Anything from WoW to Apex and COD. I'm trying to decide what gpu and monitor combo I should get. I want to use something that can support dual monitoring which most do but figured I would add that part in. I've been looking at a lot of G-Sync stuff but can't really decide. I'm not looking to spend over $800 for the combo. Any help would be highly appreciated.
