Posted: 03 Jan 2020 02:01 AM PST So recently I bought a Alienware 17 R4 laptop and the thing is not portable at all. It barley fits into my backpack and I instantly regret buying it. That's not the point haha . I want to get a laptop that I can play fortnite , bf1 , etc. But I also want the laptop to be lightweight or at least lighter then the one I have now. I also want the laptop to be light and portable but that doesn't scream GAMER. You know ? Any suggestions . Budget is 1.5k ! [link] [comments] |
Acer Swift 3 vs Lenovo S540-14 Posted: 03 Jan 2020 01:04 AM PST What's the difference? Which is better? They literally have the same hardware. Also which CPU is better i5-10210u or R5 3500u? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
2 in 1 Laptop with a good bright display and solid specs Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:43 AM PST Total budget and country of purchase: 1400-1600$, Europe [Ordering from Amazon so technically the USA] Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Not necceseraliy a 2 in 1, just a touchscreen is enough. Also looking for solid specs and a good battery. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd want it to be pretty light but it's not a deal breaker. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Very light gaming, I do programming, editing and music production. Also heavy browsing/Youtube/Netflix. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I dont expect it to run the latest AAA games but some light - medium games would be great, not absolutely neccessery though. I would rather put my money into a good display and a high build quality. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable, Good build quality, 16 gigs or RAM and 512 gigs SSD is all I need. Would prefer it to have the latest CPU technology, a bright and colorful screen [AMOLED or 4k if at all possible], good keyboard, thunderbolt 3 [if budget is sufficient] etc. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was one click away from getting the HP Spectre x360 4k AMOLED 15t which was absolutely perfect for me, and then I found out that their "Worldwide premium warranty" is worthless in my country since we don't carry that specific model so if anything breaks no one guarantees part availabillity, and overall HP gives off a shady vibe here. More reliable version of the lenovo yoga 710 15 inch Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:22 AM PST The laptop seems right for me with the screen and the specs and all that, but apparently the build quality isn't too good. Would it last 3 years or so with good care, and if not, is there an alternative that would suit me? [link] [comments] |
Looking for laptop suggestions Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:52 AM PST I need to buy a new laptop because I'm starting university. I'll be studying computer science. What laptop would you suggest? I've already excluded gaming laptops cause I don't play. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for digital painting/drawing and some games Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:59 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, Canada Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer best specifications How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 to 17 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use Photoshop, and sometimes illustrator for work. Games would be mostly strategy or management sims. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No specific game in mind. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable, and quality are big ones. 16GB RAM, and a 1 tb drive would be nice. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My last laptop was a Dell Precision M4800 that after six years is starting to die. It had a i7 4810mq @ 2.80 ghz, 16 GB ram and a 1 tb hard drive. So it was able to run photoshop, and most other things, except games with ease. [link] [comments] |
Looking for two laptops (chromebooks?) for students on the budget Posted: 03 Jan 2020 03:06 AM PST Hello! I'm looking for cheap laptops for me and my girlfriend. We are both from Poland. We will install Linux on them or stay with chromeos but it is unlikely. They will be used only for taking notes and occasional web surfing. For her I was thinking about (it has to be lightweight and have good battery life): Acer R11 HP Chromebook 11 (costs 100$ less than Acer) HP Chromebook 14 (around the same price as Acer R11) If possible I'm looking for something even cheaper. My only concern with buying used laptops is their poor batter life which defeats the purpose of portable machine. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
How can we help you more to make an informed and easier buying decision? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 08:31 AM PST Hey guys, for those who don't know me I am usually the guy who make lists like this list here for the best laptops to buy , and I also own and operate laptopslegend.com (with the help of my writer). And as much as I try to make my lists as comprehensive as possible (while trying not to get confusing) I still get inquiries via chat and comments (I don't mind keep them coming and I will keep helping), and we still get a lot of similar needs/questions. So what kind of questions do you have, or some confusing aspects when you are researching for a laptop we can help you with, or explain further. [link] [comments] |

Need help deciding, STUCK between MSI Prestige 14 A10SC and Razer Blade Stealth 13 Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:19 AM PST Hi guys, I've been looking for a neat laptop that also carries some sweet specs within it. After lots of research, my eye fell down on the following two: Both look fairly well and I'm leaning towards the Razer Blade Stealth 13, but LinusTechTips' review has brought me a lot of doubt about the sturdiness of the trackpad and the annoyance of the small right-shift button. The MSI Prestige 14 A10SC however camps with overheating issues and requires undervolting. Does this come at a cost of lower performance? Does anyone have experience with those machines and/or knows a thing or two about them? I'm also open for alternatives, I'll list the requirements down below:
Thanks in advance for taking your time! I appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Laptop to run Multiple VMs (INDIA) Posted: 02 Jan 2020 11:03 PM PST A friend is looking for a laptop to run multiple Virtual Machines, TO run VMs the CPU must have the following:
I was inclined towards Intel Based CPUs, more specifically an Intel i5 9The Gen as a read somewhere that Intel CPUs are better optimized for something like a Virtual Machine. Budget: 55K (INR) max [link] [comments] |
To play Games. 17" or Higher 3500 USD (No Thermal Throttling) Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:03 PM PST Current Laptop: MSI GE75 i7 9750H RTX 2080 (Non max - q) 8 x 2 GB 2666MHZ 512 x 2 m.2 nvmE (Raid 0) 1 TB HDD 7200 RPM 144 Hz 3 ms BUT! TEMPERATURE IS OVER 9000! So help me as posting here is my last resort cause I am only capable of finding laptops that are equivalent to a toaster on steroids and also I don't want a laptop with 2 power bricks and I'm comfortable with using a cooling pad. Posted: 02 Jan 2020 10:29 PM PST * Total budget and country of purchase: $900 - $1050 in India * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.: I am a student, so a 2 in 1 would help me take notes and all but if needed (due to the budget) I can compromise on this for the performance. A good battery life is also appreciated since I want it to last throughout the college hours. * How important is weight and thinness to you?: Important since I will be carrying this to and from college * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.: Windows. I might dual boot it with linux too. * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.: A 13 inch/14inch/15inch (something that helps with portability). * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.: I want to run programs simultaneously such as anaconda, matlab, etc and i might have to run more demanding programs in the future. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?: I don't game. I think an i5 laptop with 8GB Ram with 512GB SSD will do but I could be wrong. Can someone experienced give me some advice with respect to the specs I might need for a Computer Science Majors course? I also want the laptop to last for atleast 4-5 more years. I had the Asus Zenbook Flip in mind but it is out of my budget. I **think** i could stretch my budget a bit but i want to know if it is worth doing that considering the fact that nobody here in my country seems to talk about Asus laptops. I mean. I don't know how reliable the laptop might be. There is also the Dell Inspiron line where I can buy from the 5000 series for 2 in 1 laptops or 7000 series (without 2 in 1 since i cannot afford the 2 in 1 7000 series). But I am hesitant about these because I am not sure if it would be powerful enough for more demanding programs I might have to work on in the future. I also don't know if I can count on these to not break down or go haywire and work smoothly for at least 4-5 years. It would be great help if someone could help me out with the laptops I have in mind or suggest some other laptops that I should be looking at. [link] [comments] |
Advise on Lenovo Y530 for Work & Casual Gaming Posted: 02 Jan 2020 06:33 PM PST Hi everyone, I'm checking if this would serve what I need this year. Does this have good value as of 2020? It's possible for me to get a deal at about USD 610.00. Lenovo Legion Y530: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:54 PM PST I don't need to play video games at the highest resolution or anything. Just something that won't break and will get the job done. I currently have a MacBook Air from 2013 that's on its last leg. So anything really could be an improvement. I also live in the United States if that's relevant. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

$1200 [USA]
Long battery for student use, on the go.
Light weight and thinness are more important to me than cost.
Windows required for the programs I use (GIS, MATLAB, etc)
15"+
I use R, GIS (16GB RAM suggested), MATLAB, and STATA. I believe these are all CPU and RAM intensive.
No gaming. Just a school laptop.
My current laptop gets very hot. Good cooling is important for me. Most importantly, however, is that I would like to keep this laptop for the duration of my PHD, so longevity of parts (e.g., keyboard, trackpad, et cetera) is also important. Thank you Reddit! [link] [comments] |
Help me choose between Lenovo laptops Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:24 PM PST I'm starting a STEM PhD program and want a reliable, sturdy laptop with good battery that I'll be able to use for the next few years for MATLAB and coding in Python, the occasional Photoshop, Spotify, and otherwise for the usual web browsing and reading. I spend a lot of time reading papers and stuff for classes on my laptop. I'm upgrading from a 5-year-old Lenovo Thinkpad L440 (i5) and am looking for another Lenovo since this one treated me well. Currently looking at: The E490: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-series/E490/p/22TP2TEE490 The T490: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-t-series/T490/p/22TP2TT4900 And the Carbon Gen 7: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-x/X1-Carbon-Gen-7/p/22TP2TXX17G Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 max (cheaper is of course better), US. Cost is pushing me to buy the E490. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life for sure. No 2-in-1. How important is weight and thinness to you? N/A. My current laptop weighs 6 pounds so most models will be lighter. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? Prefer ~14". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional photoshopping. Music streaming through apps (spotify). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? My laptop travels everywhere with me, so I like something sturdy and resistant to minor bumps/spills. A comfortable keyboard is a plus. Since I want to use this for many years, i7 is a MUST. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Cost is making me lean towards the E490 with i7 processor. Will this be able to handle my coding and music streaming needs, or should I invest in one of the higher tier Thinkpads? I'll take i7 regardless, so that bumps up the cost by quite a bit. Any other models or brands I'm overlooking? [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for basic laptop with descent speakers. Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:26 PM PST My current laptop's battery has been dying (won't turn on or stay on without being plugged into charger). Then, today, coffee was spilled on it. (Cat got affectionate at a bad time.) I think it's done. Had a camera that stopped working months ago. Windows 10 keeps updating and making the touchpad not work. It is an Asus Notebook. I feel the Asus worked well except the speakers were crap. I could barely hear it while sitting in front of it with the volume all the way up. If you could recommend a simple, reliable laptop for $400-$800, I would really appreciate it. My partner is normally my go to for laptop help but he recommended I reach out to reddit for better advice. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is Surface Book 2 still worth buying? Posted: 02 Jan 2020 09:21 PM PST Overall context: My buddy is selling his Surface Book 2 (13 inch, 256GB, 8GB ra, it's the non-dedicated GPU one) and his pen for about 700-800 dollars (He got gifted a razer blade stealth for Christmas). His Book has seen bout 3 months of usage. Should I go for it? I'm planning to use it for very light gaming (Stardew, Cross Code, etc) but mostly for docs, drawing, and some reading (Got couple tabletop rulebook in pdf format that I wanna re-read again for future campaigns) Would appreciate your guys help. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Cheap Laptop for Smooth enough Minecraft Posted: 02 Jan 2020 03:18 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: USA - $350 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Laptop only How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Which OS do you require? Not important as long as it can run Minecraft Do you have a preferred screen size? Doesn't matter Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Run Minecraft and Google Chrome or some other browser for youtube, etc If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft. Just enough to play smoothly at low settings Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really, no. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need a cheap laptop for mainly Minecraft. It needs to run it fairly well, probably without much lag. The visuals and settings aren't as important; I can use the lowest settings if it means that the laptop would run faster. Thanks! Edit: Not sure if it's relevant, but I know someone who has a laptop in my price range and uses optifine, and he's able to run minecraft pretty well. [link] [comments] |
less than 400CAD, Canada: Looking for inexpensive, tough laptop to use for CS studies Posted: 02 Jan 2020 05:20 PM PST Budget: less than 400CAD Country: Canada OS: no strong preference, but it should be current. I am used to windows but could learn another. Monitor: maybe I would like a touch monitor if I can run a good android emulator and hence stop carrying my tablet, thus reducing my total carryweight, but since I don't know much about emulators, that is not a priority. Side question: could I run a good android emulator with a touch interface on a hybrid laptop like the Yoga? I play those stupid bubble games sometimes and run a meditation app every day. I also use the google translate app with some frequency, plus other useful android platform things. I would be pleased if my laptop could serve just as well as my tablet for these things. --- I am applying to computer science this year, and I am looking for an inexpensive laptop for my studies. I'd like it to be tough as I am on public transit and will be walking around with the thing for hours every week. I don't care if it's refurbished, in fact that's probably better in terms of price, but it should be fast enough to suit my needs. I expect to use it to write and compile code and record lectures if the profs will allow it. I guess I'd need a little camera for it, then. Someone was saying that the thinkpads are tough and still generally useful. So far I am looking at a thinkpad T510 and a ThinkPad Yoga 11E. Both are refurbished, affordable and are running some version of win 10 - pro for the first one and home for the second one. The first one weighs roughly 3 times more than the second one. I've never owned a laptop, and I put together my own desktop machines, so idk what brands are good. Thoughts? Recommendations? thanks :) [link] [comments] |
