    HELP FINDING NEW CHARGER

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:32 PM PST

    Hi!

I have a Dell Inspiron 7573 and I recently lost my charger at school. I am having the hardest time finding a new one. I went to Best Buy and they do not sell laptop chargers seperately. They told me to find one on Amazon so I did. I bought one that fits into my laptop and is the Dell brand. I received it and my laptop just says it does not recognize the charger and it won't charge. If anyone has had this problem or can help me out I would greatly appreciate it! I just do not know where to go from here.

Laptop sometimes charges sometimes it doesn’t.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:30 PM PST

I have an Asus ROG STRIX gaming laptop. I bought it in the UAE and I am currently in a holiday in Turkey. The electricity in Turkey unlike in the UAE is like 120V (its 240 in the UAE) so I use an adapter to charge my laptop. Its a little random however, sometimes it charges and then sometimes it doesn't. If it charges then it keeps going until I unplug it but if i plug it in Again it will not charge.

I am guessing this might be a problem because my laptop requires a higher voltage supply to charge? (Even tho it says from 100-240V is acceptable)

Right now my laptop is completely dead, i tried to change the plug in, change the adapter, I checked if there is anything loose but nothing is working or indicating that the laptop is charging.

Laptop drops in FPS when charger is plugged in.

The title basically says it all. Whenever I play games, the FPS drops from 90-100 to around 30 whenever I plug in my charger, but when I unplug the charger, it goes back to 90-100 FPS.

My laptop model is an MSI GV62 8RD

    Pump out thermal paste?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 12:39 PM PST

I have a Acer Nitro 5 laptop which has i5 8300H CPU and GTX 1050 GPU. It used generate heat above 95C when i was playing games. Then I undervolt the CPU and managed to reduce heat to like 85-90C in CPU and 67-70C GPU. Then i got the thermal paste repasted also (Cooler Master Nano). Then with the undervolted CPU, temps became 75-85C in CPU and 66C max in GPU.

After a few weeks re-pasting, I noticed that the temps are again above 95C even with undervolted CPU, but GPU temps are still like 66C max. I tried to lower the temps by again tweaking undervolt, but no luck. Now I suspect that, it is the "pump out" effect with the thermal paste.

Is there any way to avoid this "pump out" effect? Is there any specific way to apply the paste not to pump out like this short period of time?

I'm already using a laptop cooling pad. And in my country there is no place to buy Thermal Greezy products or any Metal Liquid pastes sadly. :(

Sorry for long description. Please let me know any solution for this. Thanks. :/

Leaning towards Surface Laptop 3, but feel like there might be better options

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:50 AM PST

So I have a surface pro 3 right now that's served me well for about 4-5 years, and it's getting really old. Battery doesn't last very long, and I've grown to despise the hinge stand thing. I definitely want a normal clamshell laptop for my next device.

I bought an HP Pavillion 15 around christmas break, but within 2 hours of using it, the thing was sounding like a jet engine just from me using chrome, and no solutions online fixed it (updating drivers, resetting BIOS, ect), so I've returned it and am on the hunt for a new laptop.

    Here's the form:

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\*

My budget, before tax, is about $1600 CAD tops. I'm in Canada.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

I don't care too much about a 2-in-1 form factor, more so the sturdiness of the laptop. I'd like it to have at least decent battery life, but it doesn't need to be insanely long. Something that I could take out with me for a day and use consistently, and not have to take notes. I don't want to have to worry about charging the thing anytime before the evening.

Best specifications for the money is good for me, as long as it'll get what I want.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Not too much, a thinner laptop would be nicer, but I also don't want to get something that has no performance because it's too thin.

***Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

Windows. Not interested in anything else.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    14"-15.6"

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

I'd like to have some photo editing and gaming ability. My current device, an i5 surface pro 3, runs like shit when I try to browse photos on it with adobe bridge. I want something a little more powerful. In terms of games, I don't play anything too intensive. Some stardew valley, CIV, and maybe Fallout New Vegas. Nothing overly demanding.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

    See above.

All in all, the surface laptop 3 has pretty much everything I want, it looks nice, I hear it has good battery life and runs well, it's not too loud, and I really like the 4k touchscreen. But a lot of the reviews I see on the device say it's a bit ouddated for it's price point, and there's better alternatives. Problem is, I haven't seen a ton that looks appealing to me, maybe besides some of the zenbook lines or the dell xps. I had a zenbook before my surface pro 3 and it served me very well, it just got quite old and slow after a while.

I want my next laptop to last me at least 5 years, maybe 7. I feel like I should be definitely looking at something with dedicated graphics, but I feel a little overwhelmed by all the options on the market despite my research. Hoping someone here can point me towards any suggestions or specific models of laptops that would be good for me.

    Thanks!

What is the best/reputable laptop battery vendor?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:06 AM PST

I am trying to find a battery (RC30 0248) for my razer blade 15 online and all the vendors I have found are very sketchy. Do you guys know of any underrated vendors that are trustworthy from experience?

P.S. Razer does not sell a replacement battery to their customers

Laptop for general everyday use [Canada/ CAD $500 or lower]

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:56 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500, Ontario Canada
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Mix of good battery life and specs is more important
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively light and thin but not a huge factor.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. linux/windows preferred, but chromeos is ok too *
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or less
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing heavier than chrome and some video watching
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    Hello all!

I am currently looking for laptop to replace my asus c201 chromebook as it now is getting old and slow, and it wont charge anymore. A laptop that runs linux would be the best as I want to get into working with that environment but i know i can run it on a chromebook or windows machine so not too important with OS. I use a desktop for gaming so gaming specs arent really an issue.

Can a webcam (slide) cover damage the webcam of a Laptop?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:34 AM PST

    Hi all,

just wondering (perhaps someone knows this): I have put a very thin (0.027 inch) webcam-slide-cover-plastic-thingie on my inbuilt laptop webcam. Now I wonder, can the added pressure damage the camera when I close the lid?

    Anyone got any ideas?

Shortlisted some gaming laptops - which one should I go for?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:53 AM PST

    1. MSI GF75
    2. Lenovo E590
    3. Acer Aspire 7 A715-74G
    4. ThinkPad X1 Extreme (2nd Gen)
    5. ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DV
    6. Lenovo Y740

Ideally want to go with a brand that lasts 5 years minimum as I plan on heavy use - gaming and video editing at the same time on dual monitors. Also battery life should be at least 4 hours minimum as I plan to move around.

Currently, I'm leaning towards the Lenovo Y740 since it ticks all the boxes - unless I'm missing something crucial?

Which one should I go with? Thanks and appreciate the advice.

Looking for a 17.3 inch, 1080p, 2019 laptop with Radeon graphics. Budget is $1,000 to $1300.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 06:36 AM PST

This is driving me insane lol. I absolutely won't go for a laptop with an Nvidia GPU due to color banding issues. Little did I know there doesn't seem to be anything that fits my (somewhat basic) criteria for whatever reason. Should I just wait for CES or is this set to be a slow year for laptops? thx

    Usefulness of Thunderbolt

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 05:59 AM PST

What is the practical usefulness of Thunderbolt for a laptop? Can I think of it as a kind of "safety" if say the graphics on the laptop is not good enough?
