How to log all traffic on my router? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:43 PM PST Thanks for any help here and apologies if I missed the answer somewhere in the posts. I have boys headed to that wonderful age where I kinda want to keep tabs on where they are going online. I also just like to tinker and am interested in what's going on in my network. I enrolled in OpenDNS and it kinda does the basics but I was hoping for a more complete picture of all that's going on. Very possible I'm missing something there as well. For reference I have a 'NETGEAR Nighthawk X10 AD7000 MU-MIMO Smart Wi-Fi Router' if that's helps at all. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:16 AM PST I am having problems with WIFI there is over 10 wireless networks in neighbouring flats I think it's causing performance issues my router is linksys e4200 [link] [comments] |
What gear do I get for my budget? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:43 PM PST I know all the setup, hardware, software etc. but I just don't know what's good at what price points. I need Docsis 3.1, and I don't really have any issues with connectivity around my house with my current Xfinity Combo box. Budget is 225$ max, and I have a home server if that helps. I have no problem buying used. I was considering an Edge Router but after the POE injectors and Access Point I think I would go over budget. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Building custom home, how many Cat 6 wires and where to?? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:39 PM PST I'm building a custom house currently. It is 1.5 story - 3 bedrooms, 2 home offices, living room, and home theater. About 3000 SF I believe the cable line will come in through my home office. I will have a media cabinet where I can put routers/switches. How many lines should I have to each room in the house? Just 1 or 2 per most rooms? Any issues with having about 4 to 6 to my home theater (lots of equipment to hard wire), or do you do one line and spit it once at the room? And while we're at it, how about wifi hotspots? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:58 PM PST I've found out that my Asus RT-AC52U is cutting my LAN speed down by ~60%. I don't have a hot-rod internet plan, but with the modem connected directly to my PC, I'm getting ~200Mb download, but with the router in the mix, I'm only getting ~80Mb. I've tried poking around a little in the router settings, but even though I have a basic understanding of networking, most of what I could find didn't seem to have anything to do with the reduction in speed. Any help in getting this sorted out would be greatly appreciated, even if it means getting a new router, though my understanding is that this router should be capable of much higher speeds. Thanks EDIT: I've already power cycled everything multiple times and have used the router's software to update its firmware to the most recent version. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:03 PM PST Can someone explain to me what I'm looking at here? How exactly does this NID work? There is one large wire and two smaller wires going into the box. Does this look like the NID should be serviced/replaced? I don't have landlines, just a run straight to my modem. pics here [link] [comments] |
How to access remote machines without port forwarding Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST I'm working on a project that involves a distributed network of Raspberry Pi storage servers. I need to remotely connect to computers at the homes of friends and family to monitor, update, troubleshoot, etc. Is there anything that I can easily configure to allow incoming connections (even just SSH but maybe GUI) without port forwarding? I've looked at reverse SSH tunneling but it's a little beyond my abilities. Update: Thank for the input. It pushed me in the right direction and I found this SuperUser answer using I2P, which is already part of the plan. [link] [comments] |
Wifi router suggestion / tplink archer a6 vs apple air port extreme 6th Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:37 PM PST Hey reddit, At this moment I have tplink archer a6 and i want to change it with apple air port extreme 6th Is it a good idea? what do you think? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:00 PM PST I just pluged in my disk shelf. It is loud due to the fans. Didn't think of that when I got it. I have a solution to move it to the garage and install all my home lab equipment in there. The issue is getting a 10gbps connection to it. probably 100-150 ft of cable needed. [link] [comments] |
Computer suddenly unable to connect to wifi extender Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST Using NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender EX2700 and a Belkin N300 Wireless USB Adapter I reinstalled windows to an SSD, and was able to connect to the extender through the windows installation wizard. Worked well even after finishing the install. I did one more reset after updating my gpu drivers and now suddenly I can't connect to the extender. I can connect directly to the router, and my phone is currently using the extender. Not sure what the problem is since my phone is using the extender just fine, as well as my computer was awhile ago. I have reset the extender and my router twice, rebooted, but nothing. "No internet, secured" is what it tells me. [link] [comments] |
Using a nighthawk router as a lan point Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST So im confused? For my PC, would i run an ethernet from my modem? Or could i run an ethernet from the nighthawk router that is connected to my modem? Does it make a difference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST I'm having a problem with my internet it keeps on cutting out. Cable company came out twice to fix it the first guy did next to nothing and blamed the problem on my router, second guy replaced the modem and the problem still persists so I plugged my pc directly into the new modem to eliminate my router as the problem and still have the same issue. Running speed test will go from 150 Mbs one minute to 5 Mbs or less the next. I'm looking for a program or something that will log the speed of connection so I have something to show that there's actually a problem or any help you can give. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet speed issues - Only connecting at 100MB on all devices except laptop Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:53 PM PST Team Home Networking- We just moved into a new house - the house is fully wired with ethernet CAT5E. I am having an issue with one ethernet run. It's quite long, probably 500'+ from my network 'closet' in the main house to another building on our property going through underground conduit. My cable tracer is showing good connection on all wires in the ethernet cable. I've spent way more time than I'd like to admit troubleshooting this run. The bottom line is that if I connect the ethernet directly to my laptop the network speed will resolve to a 100MB connection. speed tests max out at 99MB/s. If I force my laptop through network adapter settings to connect at 1.0GB, it will eventually connect at 1.0GB, but seems like it takes more time than normal to connect at that speed. The network adapter lights will go on... and off... and on and off, eventually staying on solid and locking in my network connection speed at 1.0GB. My speed tests at that point are my normal internet speeds, i.e. 800/800+ on our FiOS GB plan. So all good, if I connect my ethernet directly to my laptop and force the speed. The problem I run into is when I hookup my WAP. I cannot get the Asus router to connect at 1.0GB. The GUI shows that it is only connected at 100MB and therefore I'm getting slower than desired speed. I've tried putting a 1.0GB switch before the WAP, no luck. I also tried another WAP (TPLink) and it only connects at 100MB. I realize there is some issue with the network cable. I'm not sure if it is the long run, if the cable is somehow terminated wrong, damaged, interference, etc. I've terminated both ends new so I'm fairly confident it is not the wiring. I used the 'A' wiring pattern method on both ends of the keystones. The obvious issues are my laptop wants to connect at 100MB by default unless I force it to 1.0GB. Any thoughts why this might be happening? I'm at the end of my troubleshooting - looking for a fresh perspective. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Having guest connection not use VPN on Asus Merlin? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 06:45 PM PST Right now i am using a VPN via wifi and i wanted to have the guest network not go through the VPN is that possible? [link] [comments] |
MoCA Adapter Recommendations for home office? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 02:08 PM PST Hello! I'm trying to solve a home network problem and came across MoCA adapters as a possible solution. I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that the follow set up will work. The Issue: I'm in an apartment, and the coax comes in one room and is wired through to the living room. About half way through, is where the extension to the living room is connected. In a separate room I have my desktop computer which needs a direct ethernet connection. Will this work: Instead of running a long ethernet cable from the router, through more walls, into the office, I was wondering— since the split in the ethernet is right between the living room and office, can I put a splitter on that, and run a second coax into the office. I would then use the MoCA adapter to convert the coax to ethernet, which would go to my computer. I've seen some things saying you need two MoCA adapters to work together with the router, but since I don't need wifi from the MoCA, I should be able to get away with one, right? Diagram: •Green is existing cable coming i. from outside, wired through to Living Room (modem is at the end, in the living room) •Green Box is beginning of extension coax, where I could add a splitter •Blue is desired second line into office •Blue box would represent potential MoCA [link] [comments] |
Have a cat5 distribution board in my house, not sure how to use it? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 05:39 PM PST Trying to connect my desktop computer in my room via Ethernet. I've found that when I plug the router into the wall, it leads to here: https://m.imgur.com/a/7WS82Lc For now I'm experimenting with the one that says it connects to the kitchen. I'm confused though, why are there two ports to the kitchen when there is only one port actually in the kitchen? Do each of these have an input and output or something? [link] [comments] |
Overpowering a ubiquiti ac ap lr with poe+ Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:42 PM PST I got a linksys lgs116p that have poe+. As far as I can see the ubiquiti ap ac lr only supports "normal" poe. Will the switch deliver too much power to the ap if i connect it or is it compatible? [link] [comments] |
Good budget Router to replace Quantum Gateway ? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:57 PM PST Hello, I have Verizon Fios and I'm currently renting their Fios Quantum Gateway Router, but I've decided it's time for me to get my own and save money in the long wrong. I don't have knowledge regarding the right router to pick for my purposes and budget, which is why I'm asking you guys. I have the Fios Gigabit plan and I frequently game and watch 1080+ 60fps videos. Any good routers for the money ? [link] [comments] |
I’m getting a new router to manage bandwidth Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:54 PM PST I saw this Dir-605l discounted, I was looking at the feature it provides and I found everything I need. There's even an app for phones that allows me to monitor devices remotely, even if I'm not home (that's good since I have kids). My internet speed is 25mbps, usually we have 8 devices connected at the same time (even though not all of them are used at the same time). I was thinking to divide the download speed equally for each device to avoid having one device sucking up all the speed. This is the main reason why I'm buying a new router since my old one doesn't have QoS and bandwidth control options. How much kbps each device should have in other to function properly considering I have a total of 25mbps of download and 2mbps of upload? I was thinking 2048kbps on 7 devices and leave the remaining speed for my laptop which I need for work. What are your recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Power and Data lines running parallel? Any way to avoid EMI Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:40 PM PST So I'm in the planning stage of a re-design of my current workspace for computer assembly and repair What would need to be done to prevent EMI issues between the power runs and ethernet runs [link] [comments] |
Wondering if my current router will be sufficient for new Sonic Fiber Internet? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:12 PM PST Hi there. I'm planning to sign up for a new Internet plan with Sonic (Fiber, gigabit) and currently have been using Comcast with this router (TP-Link AC1200 Dual Band Router): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0168G0KZY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've looked through the reviews but can't tell if 1) this router will work with the new Internet connection and 2) if it will work, how good/bad it will be? I have a small apartment so wifi range isn't really an issue. Mostly casual internet user with a few devices connected at a time. Would really appreciate any help, very new to all this and a bit overwhelmed. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
My WIFI keeps cutting off/disconnecting? Help Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:41 PM PST I would restart it by taking out the back cord for 10 secs and re connect and then it works - a few mins later it disconnects. This is the first time this has happened. Help? Edit: It just cut off and I didn't do anything and came back [link] [comments] |
Adding a wifi router for the 2.4 band, potential problems? Posted: 31 Jan 2020 11:51 AM PST I'm using AT&T's gigabit router for my wifi, it's 2.4/5 GHz. Recently I bought a couple of 'smart devices' (light bulbs and robot-vacuum), and in both cases their apps told me they can't connect to 5GHz networks. For some reason they won't connect to the 2.4 GHz option in the router if they have the same SSID as the 5 GHz's. I then tried changing the SSID of the 2.4 GHz wifi to make it different than the 5 GHz one, but the router's admin popped a warning saying that it uses both bands to increase the bandwidth, but only if they have the same SSID. Damned if you do, damned if you don't :( So I figured I could add another wifi router for the 2.4 band with its own SSID, and since I've never done that, was wondering if there are any things I should be aware of. My plan is to connect an ethernet cord from a numbered slot in the AT&T router to the 'wan' port of the 2.4 router and set the 2.4 router network IP same as the AT&T router's wifi network (192.168.1.*), maybe set the DHCP of the AT&T router to stop at 199 and let the DHCP of the 2.4 one to start on 200. Would that work? is this the best option? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:27 PM PST Centurylink upgraded my service and sent a new router after our service was cutting in and out. New router/modem won't contract at all and tech said its likely the wiring from the outside to inside the house. Anyone have a wiring diagram I could reference? I'd like to try to get it running as their service is a few days out and we stream everything. [link] [comments] |
