My experience switching from an old Flagship to a new Budget Phone. Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:29 AM PST TL/DR: FOR ME, the Moto G7 Power is a nice experience compared to the Galaxy S7 Edge. Battery life on my S7E was getting pretty bad so around November I started looking for a new phone. I wasn't in a real rush; I figured I would wait to see what early 2020 would offer. Being on Verizon severely limits options but that's a different topic. About a week before Christmas the S7E started really acting up and battery life fell off the cliff. Then it started getting very hot and the battery expanded enough to unseat the back glass panel. Suddenly I needed to make a quick decision. I don't think I'm typical of the type of user that follows r/Android. All I use my phone for is to make calls, text a bit, use Google Maps, lurk Reddit, track my cycling miles and gym workouts and listen to music on Spotify and my own Google Play library. I don't play any game. I also don't use any other Social Media. So no Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat apps installed. I've also only had two phone over the past 6 years – the S7E and prior to that a Galaxy S3. Bottom line is – I simply don't need a powerful Flagship – I'm about as basic a user as you can get. The research I was doing around Christmas lead me toward the Samsung A51 but it's not really out yet for Verizon and I didn't think I could risk waiting much longer knowing that the S7E could die anytime. I could have gone with the A50 but for the price and knowing the A51 is a better phone I just couldn't pull the trigger on the A50. Staying with Samsung would have made the switch over easier though - I thought Smart Switch would save me but its doesn't work going Galaxy to non-Galaxy. Argh! Enter the Moto G7 Power. I, gasp, got the Amazon Alexa version for $179. At that price if it totally sucks I wouldn't feel too bad getting something better in a few months. As it turned out, it's not so bad at all and in fact, I'm enjoying the experience better than the old S7E. Why? Here's why: ​ Even when the S7E was new, battery life was only so, so. The Moto's battery life is such a breath of fresh air. I really like the larger screen of the Moto and the downgrade from 1080p to 720p is not an issue for me. I like the 'heft' of the Moto – it feels more substantial than the S7E. The S7E always felt so fragile. I was always concerned with it breaking. I grew to hate the edge of the S7E. Unwanted taps were totally out of control – Flat Screen for life from here on out. The S7E did have a pretty good camera. I've only taken a few pics with the Moto so no conclusion on this yet. I did install GCAM on the Moto so we'll see. I miss wireless charging on the S7E but frankly, charging is less of an issue with the Moto. USB Type-C on the Moto is nice. I miss the Led notification on the S7E. The bio-metric sensor on the S7E was nice (I would occasionally check my heart rate just for kicks) but it's moot because I don't know of any new phones with a bio-metric sensor. The Moto Actions (Chop to open Flashlight, Twist to open Camera) are handy. Fingerprint sensor on Moto is far better then the one on the S7E and I love it being on the back of the phone – it's just so much better there than in front. Face-unlock on the Moto seems to work good. Both phones only have 32GBs of Storage but with most of the apps I regularly use installed on the Moto I have 17.50GBs remaining. S7E has 4 GB RAM vs. 3 on the Moto but given my typical usage patterns I doubt this will ever be an issue. I don't know how to compare the 3 year old 820 processor on the GS7 to the Moto's newer 632. So far the Moto is quick and smooth enough for my needs. In conclusion, the Moto does what I need it to and the user experience has been better than that of the S7E. Some 'courage' decisions that makes no sense Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:03 AM PST I feel like phone makers are actively regressing in some aspects. While the removal of the headphone jack did anger me, I can understand that it is a decision based on financials. They want us to buy their buds or whatever they choose to call them, and it makes them more money. On the other hand, the relocation of the fingerprint sensor to under the screen has zero financial and practical sense. I have used the OnePlus 2, Pixel 3 and now just moved to the OnePlus 7t. The tactile feel of the physical sensor is very superior and helped my muscle memory to adapt very quickly. As a result, by the time I need to interact with my phone, it is unlocked and I am on my homescreen. Now, with the 7t, after a few weeks of use, I am struggling to hit to correct spot and more often than not, I need to think about it. This is unnecessarily time wasting especially when I just need to glance at an email or message. I remember reading here and watching some tech reviewers stating that the OnePlus underscreen fingerprint scanner is crazy fast. I agree. But the difference between the physical scanner and the underscreen one is so negligible that this should really not be a talking point. submitted by /u/g43m [link] [comments]

Bar beneath keyboard - Android 10 - Gestures Posted: 31 Dec 2019 07:13 PM PST For those Samsung users who updated to android 10 today and were warmly welcomed with a thick bar beneath their keyboards, this is for you. I found a fix for Galaxy Note 10, and I am assuming at least all other Samsung devices. You need to disable two options in settings and the bar will dissappear. "Show keyboard button" under onscreen keyboard and "Show button to hide keyboard" under navigation bar . This removes the gap and restored my sanity. I hope this helps anyone who is frustrated and first Google search leads to an adb fix that stretches the screen to cutoff the lower 75-100 pixels. submitted by /u/adwilson254 [link] [comments]
