Windows 7: Where is my hard drive space going? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:43 AM PST I am currently on Windows 7, planning on updating to windows 10. As I started the app to do so, it tells me I need 8 GB free on my C: hard drive to do so. The problem is: when I go onto said hard drive, it's at 110 used with 1.6 free. So far, no complaint. But basically, I'm not using that drive. It's solely for my Windows, and the reminder is on the other drives. So I started looking at what's taking space. And here's the result: I should have about 40GB unused. The Windows folder is 32GB, the Users folders is 16GB, Program files is 7.5, Program Data is 7.5 and all 9 other folders are less than 300Mb. All counted, I'm missing about 45GB. I have no idea what's using that space, and I need it to make that damn update. For info, I have shown all hidden folders and they are accounted for. Is there any tool that could show me where is that data? Edit:Alright, I will admit that my math were wrong, because apparently, my Windows folder was at 56 GB, but it stopped at 32 for a solid minute, so I didn't think it would show more. Nonetheless, I have freed 1GB of data from one of my folders, and as I check, I still see only 1.6 free. I ran MalwareByte to be sure, but it doesn't detect anything. Edit 2: I'm getting tired. I forgot to empty the recycle bin. So I only need to find these damn 20gb of data. Edit 3: Solved. I miscalculated (a lot) and I also had virtual memory and hibernation using some space. I moved virtual memory to another hard drive until I'm done installing. I have another issue though, but to keep the consistency of that post, I'll put it in another one. [link] [comments]
Is it not stealing if i skip windows activation? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 06:29 PM PST Hello! Is it alright to use windows 10 for free and have the watermark and some limitations? I am just really concerned if that would be stealing. I don't mind the watermark and limitations i'd just like a free legit way to get windows... Thanks [link] [comments]

My computer keeps deconnecting for no reason. Posted: 26 Dec 2019 03:50 PM PST So, i have this HP 15 Notebook PC since 5 years now. Last year i had to reboot my computer because of the "Windows April Update" that literally destroyed everything, and now im on Windows 8.1. Since a week now, my computer keeps disconnecting from my internet network, i don't know, but for some reasons it disconnects. Also, since a few hours now, it just shows only 1 line out of 5, like you can see in this picture. When my laptop shows "limited" or disconnects, i right click on this logo, click "solve problems" and it shows me this message: (im sorry it's in french, english is not my first language) <---- Basically it says: (first) "Your network cable is not plugged correctly" (detected) (second) "Your network card has a problem" (corrected) Everytime i do this, my internet comes back (only to get out a few minutes later). I have no idea what is going on, i someone booting me ? Is it a technical problem ? If this keeps happenning im just going to buy a new computer, this one is getting older. [link] [comments]
Will resetting windows mess with other drives? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:32 AM PST I want to reset windows (y'know, clear up space and quicken things up) but I don't want anything from my D: drive to be removed. When I press "...keep personal files..." --> "List of apps to be removed", it mentions programs in my D: drive, e.g steam, steam games, etc. Is it actually going to clean up D:, or is it only saying it will, but not actually do it? If it is, how do I only clean my C: drive? No options to only clean C come up, and I don't want mess anything up [link] [comments]

Any good Windows 10 deals to be had for an Australian? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 07:25 PM PST Tired of Linux, I just want things to work 'out the box'. Would like a Cd/USB for install. Going to be installing on my older SSD and deleting Linux. [link] [comments]
Window's Boot Manager opens for half a second before booting Posted: 26 Dec 2019 12:32 PM PST I have a dual boot set up so I can choose whether to boot to Ubuntu or Windows, but whenever I choose to boot to windows I get taken to window's boot manager(WBM) where I would have to press enter to go into windows or wait 30 seconds for it to continue anyway. I was able to "remove" this by going to: Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advanced system settings -> Startup and Recovery The "Time to display list of operating systems:" is unchecked which sets the timer to 0 seconds and grayed out. The issue is, after doing this I can still see the WBM for half a second before going to windows. This isn't that big of a deal but it didn't happen before. I was wondering if there was a way to skip WBM all together. Any ideas on how to disable it would help! [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Dec 2019 05:45 PM PST I just got a new laptop. 10th gen i5, 8gb RAM, 512gb ssd. Nothing too fancy but I was expecting decent performance for basic tasks like web browsing. For some reason it is extremely sluggish. Windows menus take forever to use. Firefox is like molasses. I checked resource monitor, CPU and RAM usage look fine. What do I do? [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:34 PM PST Hello all, I have had this persistent issue with Windows 10 from whichever build first supported a dark theme (I think 1809?) where windows explorer shows correctly except for the URL or file path bar. The text is white because of dark mode, but the address bar is also white, making it impossible to see what is there unless I click on it. My work PC has the same setup with my domain account, but it works correctly, so I'm guessing the feature does work as intended. I just got some new PC parts and completely reinstalled Windows from scratch about 3 weeks ago, but the problem still persists which is crazy to me. Light mode renders correctly (black text, white bar), so I am unsure what the problem is. I sign in with my Microsoft account. I am not sure if Windows cloud caches some settings or other things without me noticing. Google has basically been no help. No one has seemed to have an identical problem, they typically have a more serious explorer issue with colors in general. I do not have any shell mods or other things, this is just standard Windows 10 Home with built in dark theme. Ideas? [link] [comments]
Issues regarding DX 12 and its backwards compatibility Posted: 26 Dec 2019 02:13 PM PST I recently (literally yesterday) got a new laptop that is able to run almost all programs with no problems. However, I've had an issue with multiple games (namely Apex Legends and R6S) where it's saying my DirectX is not compatible as it needs DX 11, but is running DX 12. I've been searching for about an hour now on ways to fix this, and I don't know if I would need a different video card or not to run it. For context, I have already tried previous Windows versions with Apex, but that has had no success. Every hardware piece listed is recommended for both programs and I am really confused on how to solve this. My hardware is pretty average too, with an i5-2520M core, 8GB RAM etc. Do I need to wait for DX 12 compatibility, is it a bug or do I need to get a different video/graphics card? And yes, I know DirectX is very limited with its backwards compatibility. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:26 PM PST Hello, i have a problem wqith Windows 10 and I hope someone can help me out. At this moment I dunno what the exact problem is but when I boot up my laptop it will at first seem to boot fine, but after a while loading up everything, the icon on the desktop disapear, sometimes they blink in and out very quickly, if I clink and drag over their place they apear, if I click on the start menu they appear as well. In addition to this, windows is extremely slow, as if it was running something in the background that is very heavy. The laptop may be old but it was functioning just fine last week. Opening up windows explorer it will have trouble trying to open up anything due to it almost crawling to a stop. When I open up word, it will show up the locate and replace button which it won't matter how many times I click on it, it will come up again and prevent me from using it. Again, the laptop was fine last week, today I had this problem which started briefly after I booted the PC. It was working fine in the first 10 minutes after I booted it up but then started acting up. One thing I noticed is that it also changed my background image to the one I have on my desktop without my saying. At this point I am clueless as to whether this is a windows problem or virus or even possibly hardware. If anyone had similar issues could you help me out? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Dec 2019 01:07 PM PST I just reinstalled Windows 10 Home on one of my older PCs but the time is not synching properly. Right off the bat after install it was wrong. Does anyone have a fix for this? Synching with the time server or changing time servers hasn't helped solve the problem. I toggled on "Set time automatically" and "Set timezone automatically" but it never finished synching. Changing the time server also never finished synching. Anyone have any ideas? Need help with a complete wipe on Windows 7 Posted: 26 Dec 2019 08:01 AM PST Soo I've had my computer for about 5-6 years now at this point, and when I got it I didn't really pay attention to organizing stuff and just made everything a complete mess, but to get to the point my pc sucks, and it's full of trash I can't be bothered to uninstall one by one. I've looked online on how to completely wipe the system but I never found an answer as the windows 7 I have on my pc is not official, idk how my parents got it on there when they fist gave it to me but they didn't pay for it. So is there any solution on how to completely wipe everything (and maybe get Win10) on a pc with Windows 7 that is not official? Hope it makes sense, and all recommendations/response is much appreciated! [link] [comments]

Random crashes after playing for a few minutes Posted: 26 Dec 2019 10:25 AM PST I would be very grateful for any advice. I have a Win10 box (all the latest updates) with a i9-9900K and 64GB of RAM. The graphics card is a NVidia Geforce RTX 2080 from MSI running the latest NVIDIA driver. I use Windows Defender as my AV. My motherboard is a ROG Maximus X HERO with the latest BIOS (2203 0 October 2019). I use an LG HDTV running 4096X2160@60Hz as my monitor. When playing certain games such as Age of Empires II (via PC XBOX pass), my machine freezes up completely needing a hard reset - this is usually after playing for a few minutes. It also happens with RDR II (running through rockstar/steam) but not with AC Odyssey or AOE I (also via XBOX), or in fact any other game I've tried recently. I though it might be a heating issue but with a monitor running in the background, the machine crashed with a CPU temp of 83 degrees centigrade. The graphics card is at around 38 degrees centigrade. One single time i got a BSOD with error code 0x00000124 which is why i though it might be an overheating issue, but every other time it's just a freeze with the image static on the screen. I ran a CPU stress test without any problems. Please help [link] [comments]
Any need for motherboard specific drivers for clean windows fully updated? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 09:25 AM PST My previous windows has got down with boot crash loops that went resetting the PC after applying qualitative updates of Windows 10 1903. I was reluctant to install any windows updates after too many horrendous experiences of installing updates which i nearly escaped of losing my work files after resetting my PC. On a CLEAN good smelling windows 10 now! ALL UPDATED and NO UPDATES LEFT! After this clean install of windows I found my drivers wasn't been updated officially in mobo website, as you can see [here](https://www.asus.com/in/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-X99-GAMING/HelpDesk_Download/) from 2016. I think my PC got previously messed up with a few driver conflict with the last qualitative update where PC was boot crashing and then proceeding with recovery but still freeze there. Would my PC required to install the drivers listed at the mobo website again after installing all of those windows updates? Currently on Nvidia GeForce drivers only. And with no updates left, system running fine 😓 PS: Tried playing overwatch, and it's running quiet fine and smooth. Not sure if I install the realtek drivers so it can output a better sound. Thanks.
