This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I installed an SSD in my mom’s computer and she’s thrilled.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:09 AM PST

After finally experiencing the upgrade from HDD to SSD myself this year, it was painful to watch my mom wait 5-10 minutes on a cold boot for her computer to be usable. So I bought her a 240 GB Sandisk SSD (35 USD) from Best Buy for Christmas and plopped it in, and cloned her old drive. The whole process took about 2 hours and her husband was on the verge of freaking out the entire time that I was going to break something.

Now that it's done however, my mom with her basic Dell i3-6100 computer called me at 3 AM to tell me she hasn't stopped using her computer since I left at 8 PM. She said she can't believe how much more responsive everything is now, and even her husband is impressed. But he thinks the speed up is partially because I blew a bunch of dust out of the CPU heat sink.

She said now she might actually shut her computer off now at night instead of putting it to sleep since start up time is just as quick. If a loved one in your life is still using old HDDs, do them a favor and bring them into modern hardware life with an SSD.

Next gift idea, small PCIe powered GPU so she doesn't need to play Sims 3 on integrated graphics.

    5700 XT vs 1080 TI?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:49 PM PST

On eBay I can find a open box but supposedly new 5700 XT for let's say about $350.

However I can also find used 1080 TIs for about $400.

What would be the better choice? They honestly seem to trade blows in benchmarks except for Nvidia optimized games where the 1080 wins by a mile.

If I could find a 1080 TI in good condition would it be better? Or would the 5700 XT be more future proof simply because it's newer?

Recently bought a used pc from Craigslist

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:35 PM PST

Yesterday I bought a used cyberpowerpc from Craigslist for an absolute steal but there are some problems.. I've tested BF1, Modern Warfare, and BF4 but the only game that runs smoothly is BF1 for some reason. Modern Warfare sometimes fails to load textures and it won't even let me join ground war sometimes.

    The specs are:

    Intel i5 7400

    RX 580 4 GB

    8 Gb ram (2x4gb) 3000mhz

    1 TB hdd

My question is would upgrading to 16 gb ram and putting windows on an ssd solve my problems? Thanks!

Ryzen 5 3600 and MSI B350 PC Mate won't post

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:44 PM PST

I've just upgraded my cpu from a ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 5 3600 into my existing motherboard and can't get it to boot.

Updated the bios before upgrading the cpu to the latest version according to the msi website and the computer booted fine with the old chip.

Installed the new chip and cannot get anything other than the red cpu light appearing on the motherboard.

    Have tried the following:

    Loosening the cooler

    Tightening the cooler

    Reseating ram

Resetting cmos by the battery pins

Removing and reinserting the new chip

Trying to boot with one ram stick attempted in each of the slots.

I'm currently at a bit of a loss and not sure where to go from here.

    System is:

    Ryzen 5 3600

Msi B350 pc mate motherboard with 7A34vAJ bios installed.

    2 x 4gb 3200 ddr4 ram

Zotac gtx 1060 3gb amp! Edition graphics card

500 bq evga 80 plus psu

Any ideas what could be going wrong or what I could do to fix this would be much appreciated.

Apologies for formatting as I'm currently on my phone.

Thanks in advance for any help or input.

PC crashes every time I play a game. Did a "System Stability Test" and the "Stress GPU" test crashed every time. Is it confirmed bad GPU?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:23 PM PST

My friend recommended I ask here in case there were other testing ideas we could do to see what the problem is.

New and first built computer works great and weirdly i played about 2 hours of games last night and everything was top shape. Today when playing a game it will start and look good but after a couple (0-5) min the PC crashes and shuts down. After researching all day with a friend we found this aida64 stress test to see what it could tell us.

Power supply looked good, produced correct voltage +0.179V max. The stress test on CPU went for 15 min and found nothing wrong. However the GPU test... It would fail under a minute every time (did it about 5 times).

So me and my friend believe its a bad graphics card and I already have a new card picked out and I'm ready to hit the return button on this graphics card, but we were wondering if the info found was 100% blame on GPU? Maybe there is something we don't know or can try?

    I'm ready to give up

    Thanks!

Edit: Sorry, card is XFX Radeon RX 570 RS XXX Edition

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:35 PM PST

My usual steps, after fully shutting down and power off my pc are to first of all turn it back on. Once it is back on I have to press f1 to enter the bios settings then I press "discard changes & exit. After that I reach the main screen and am good to go but right now when I press discard changes and exit I get a black screen then back into the bios settings? what may be wrong?

Is it worth upgrading the 1070 at this time? 2080 super, 2080ti, next gen?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:12 PM PST

Just wondering is it worth upgrading my 1070 at this point in time? In looking for an upgrade it will most likely be either the 2080 super or the 2080ti as reading around those 2 are the only real ones that warrants the price tag over the performance boost of the 1070.

My gpu is working perfectly fine but I wanted to get the most out of my 1440p 144hz monitor and my 1070 is beginning to show it's age. So my question is, is it worth it to upgrade to the 2080 super or 2080ti or hold off until the 3000 series mid next year? Thanks all!

Computer Freezes When Cat Steps on Case

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:07 PM PST

    Hello all.

I'd recently upgraded my machine for Christmas. I have a new motherboard, ram, graphics card, and fans.

My old machine would freeze seemingly randomly, or whenever any pressure was put on the case from the top. I did some research at the time, and found this might be caused by a bios-update I needed, but didn't want to do...so I left it.

After working with outdated hardware and these freezes for over 6 years, I finally got sick of it, and upgraded some stuff for Christmas. Thinking it was the bios-update-issue above, I figured a new mobo would solve the issue.

...however it didn't. I've noticed that whenever my cat leaps on top of my case, it always makes my computer freeze, and requires a restart.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Do you think it's a short in my case somewhere, or maybe a faulty SATA cable on one of my hard drives?

    Any insight is appreciated.

    Thank you!

Gaming PC, 3rd build in 14 years, kinda know what I'm doing

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:06 PM PST

Build Help: Not sure if I'm supposed to keep this text, so I will (NOTE: Reached the end and got my answer, but may as well keep it, now)... skimmed the sidebar/rules... read a couple build drafts and threads on the front page...

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I use my PC primarily for gaming and watching TV. I built my 1st PC in 2006, and my 2nd PC in 2012. I've been saying it's time to upgrade for a couple years, but that whole cryptocurrency price spike kept giving me excuses to delay. With Windows 7 expiring in a couple weeks, I finally have the push I need to do an upgrade. My current PC has been kinda lagging for awhile now. My main game is Path of Exile, a few times a year, and the game is historically a resource-hog. People have problems with the game sometimes, even with good new PCs. I've lived on lowest settings allowed forever (without going lower using ini settings), and even went so far as to reduce the resolution in the past year or 2, to shrink the display space to allow me to keep playing. Everything else I play (WoW, clicker games, cheap Steam games) don't require nearly the same amount of PC Power.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Step 1, I'd like to get back to 1080p PoE gaming. High/Ultra settings aren't a necessity for me, but the room to play with settings without ending up with unplayable FPS rates would be a vast improvement. (Especially in moving to step 2)

Step 2, I wouldn't mind trying 1440p gaming, but that means buying a $300 monitor. To that end, I've included a 1440p monitor in the parts list I'm going to link, but I'm probably going to buy that later, and keep using my 1080p TV monitor for now (a TV monitor I've been unsatisfied with for awhile)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My budget is around $1200... I can go a bit higher, but it has to be worth it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zc6V4n

Provide any additional details you wish below.

CPU: I picked the 3900X when I was first creating the list, because it was only $15 more, but the prices changed and now it's $45 more, and I was unsure if it was worth it, so I knocked the X off...

CPU Cooler/Mobo/Case/PSU: Got most of this from the other thread on the front page: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/eh8xl9/gaming_pc_first_build_no_idea_what_im_doing/ Just knocked off the RGB colors and looked at the comments. Also knocked 100W off the PSU going for the 2018 Corsair instead of 2019...

Memory: Took advice in the above thread and picked b-die RAM with matching speeds for the first 3 numbers...

Storage: I already bought the 1TB SSD around Black Friday, and am using it for big game storage right now (WoW, since PoE fits on my old old 128GB SSD), just included it here for completeness of build. The 2x 2TB HDD are because I'm big into audiobooks, and want a ton of storage space... these 2TB drives seem the most cost-efficient. My current 1TB drive isn't nearly enough space... I also have some stored on 128GB USBs...

OS: Another inclusion for completeness... this is $100 I'm not sure I'll have to spend, if I'm able to upgrade using my existing Windows 7 key (which I hear I still can, but at this point I feel I may as well wait and do it on a new PC)

Monitor: Like I say way up top, I'm interested in getting a 1440p monitor, but planning to wait until a little while after I have my new PC up and running (tax return season)... still wouldn't mind some advice on this, while I'm building the rest... this seemed like a pretty highly rated monitor/price point, both on system builder and top google searches...

Video Card: this is probably where I could use the most advice... the build I looked at was trying a 5700x, and the recommendations jumped that to a 2080 super, which is above my budget... so I did a bunch of research and ended up on the 1660 super, which is pretty new and seems good... wasn't sure if I should go with the 2060 super instead, at nearly double the price...

All in all, my "$1440 build" is only $1060-$1080, when you remove the monitor I'm holding off on, pre-purchased SSD, and $20 PSU rebate, so I think I have some wiggle room... I can probably knock off a couple extra dollars removing any LED lighting still lingering in the build, as well (since I don't really care about LED lighting, and will probably just disable any I can, anyway)...

So what advice do you guys have to share? Thanks...

I would like some feedback on a $5.5k build.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:02 PM PST

I know this build is overkill and preposterous to some. My buddy is well-off and asked me to put together a build that has top of the line performance. He assigned around $5,000 for the budget. He is planning to use it to stream, play games, edit videos, and general content creation. I chose AMD over Intel for the CPU simply out of principal. Would you suggest make any changes given the budget? Better performing SSDs/HDDs or RAM? More efficient PSUs? Motherboard with more features and betters VRMs? Better Monitors (2-monitors is a must according to him). Pretty much any constructive feedback is appreciated.

how to check parts outside box?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:00 PM PST

i've seen many people and youtube do this by putting the motherboard outside the box and booting it?

i do not know if i am correct but apparently it is helpful in finding out parts that are already dead and just to test before it goes into the case.

how do i do this? what do i need to have on the motherboard? what do i plug my power supply into on the motherboard? how do i connect it to the monitor?

Heatpipe orientation seems to actually matter. A lot. On GPU.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:43 PM PST

Today I've been trying to figure out why my new shiny 5700 XT Nitro+ "Special Edition" runs so hot and so loud - 2200-2400 RPM and 109 C junction temperature under load. All reviews suggest that it should be a lot better on stock settings. I'm using Silverstone FT-02 case, it's kinda unconventional - all rear i/o is actually on top: https://imgur.com/S5zWnDM

Decided to take a break and watch youtube a bit. Stumbled upon GamersNexus video about how heatpipe orientation doesn't matter.

I've looked at my case. Turned the case so that it stands on its front panel (and thus GPU is in traditional horizontal orientation): https://imgur.com/MYVA9Wo Miracle. 1500 RPM, 90 C junction. I've repeated the test multiple times to be sure.

I doubt it's related to mounting pressure - in horizontal orientation the heatsink hangs down, so weak pressure would only make everything worse. So it must be heatpipe orientation. Also, my old RX 580 Pulse has no problems with cooling in any case orientation - fan speeds and temperatures don't change when I rotate the case. But it is a lot shorter than 5700 XT Nitro, and heatpipes on it are oriented in a different way.

Now I'm not sure how to find cards that will work fine in vertical orientation - are coolers with heatpipes oriented across the card the only safe choice? Has anybody else had similar problems (there are other cases with the same GPU orientation - for example, Phanteks Shift, Silverstone LD03)?

    SSD Boot drive swap

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:34 PM PST

I just bought an NVME SSD drive to replace my current 2.5" SSD as my boot drive, I want to just replicate my current drive over to the new one then wipe the 2.5" drive and use it for media storage. What would be the best way to move all the data over to the new drive?

After months of lurking between here and the sales subreddit, and building PCs for others, I finally have a personal rig of my own

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:28 PM PST

I've been wanting to build a pc for myself for the past couple of years now, but between work, school, and bills, have never been able to afford it. I've helped a friend build his PC, and built one for a friend of the family, and that brought my urge over the edge.

Since July of this year, I've slowly been gathering parts, starting with a like new 1080 Ti Strix I bought off of a friend. Since then I've been lurking /r/buildapcsales and using that and this year's pretty decent Black Friday sales to get the rest of my components.

Everything on the rig is currently overclocked one way or another.

    • CPU: PBO getting about 4.0 GHz in CB20
    • GPU: +130hz core, +300 mem (was +500 but long term gaming caused instability)
    • RAM: tighter timings via Dram Calculator
    • Monitor: only so far have pushed it to 180hz, from 144hz

Transferring from 1 TB HDD to 1 TB SSD

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:23 PM PST

So I purchased a 1 TB WD SSD and it'll be here tomorrow. I'm confident in physically installing it but moving my data around has me worried. I currently have a 1 TB HDD and I'm using about 800 GB of it. I would like to keep the HDD connected to my computer so that I can use it for storing miscellaneous stuff and use the SSD for my OS / games. Googling around, a lot of posts have been saying to fresh install the OS onto an SSD but they mention the SSD being considerably smaller than their existing HDD. I've heard that fresh installing usually leads to less errors down the line but cloning also appears to be relatively straightforward. Fresh installing has me worried as I don't fully understand how two Windows installations would function when downloaded on each drive. I'm just looking to find the best and simplest method for getting everything setup with an SSD and HDD without having to reconfigure Windows and lose a bunch of my stuff.
