    Simple Questions - December 15, 2019

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 04:10 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Planning on buying a new PC soon with an i9 9900K. Do I need a liquid cooler?

I'm planning on buying a new PC with an i9 9900K and a 2080 Super. I was wondering if I need a liquid cooler or if I can still use an air cooler. My budget is $80 USD at max

My thank-you post - an update on the PC you guys helped my to build for only $20.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:26 AM PST

    Hey r/buildapc!

Just about two months ago, I posted a thank-you to several people ( u/techmanjoe, u/goblinrum, u/torymid, u/l3ggomycraigo, u/Gibby1560, u/bobsmth93, u/Plainzwalker, and u/SauceOverflow ) for their help and extreme generosity in helping me to put together a build on a highly limited budget. I had many kind responses to that post and several people offering me parts. I now have two more names to add to that list: u/FeralSparky and u/smurfsriot, who have given me an HD 7870 and 32GB of DDR3 1866, respectively. Additionally, I would like to thank u/techmanjoe once again for his willingness to go above and beyond to help me with issues I was having, to the point that he even refunded (That's right, refunded) me (completely unprompted, and in my opinion not necessary) for the motherboard and processor due to a faulty ram slot, halving the total spent on this pc, from $40 to $20. I owe more thanks than you can believe, and will be forever grateful for the kind acts of all of these generous Redditors.

    ----------(\/) Build Updates (\/)----------

As for the case, I still haven't bought or made a transparent side panel, nor have I gotten RGB anything. For the time being, I have left the side panel off, as you all told me that would be fine.

Additionally, you all told me to rotate the cooler 90 degrees for better airflow. I initially thought that was impossible, but I looked closer and found I actually could. I had it running nicely, but the fan had a tiny rattle when placed vertically which turned into a roar and drove me crazy. This does, unfortunately, mean I'm out a fan on my 212, but I'll make do until I get a new one.

Unfortunately, ASUS says they can't ship me the IO shield, so I guess I'll have to deal without one until I get a new board.

I do still plan to eventually put in a better WiFi card and a sound card, but it's not really a top priority.

    ----------(/\) Build Updates (/\)----------

Below is an updated list of parts I have in use.

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Strictly for gaming

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

At Bare minimum I would want 1080p 60FPS on max settings but would want the potential of going to higher frames or resolution. Also getting the machine to be VR ready if possible.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Trying to keep it around $1000 (USD) but am flexible if certain parts are worth it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

    Monitor not posting

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 10:55 AM PST

I was building my first PC, but I got some thermal paste on the side of the CPU and cleaned it off with isopropyl alcohol. I tried to test it out just in case to seen if anything was broken by trying to go into bios.

The motherboard and gpu lights up and everything, fans are spinning, but the monitor can't pick up a signal. Is the cpu broken then, and is that why the monitor isn't posting?

What are the downsides to buying a used gpu?

I'm trying to figure out where to plug LED+ and LED- in for my front panel connector, because there are 3 pins but each plug is only one pin. Says LED+- above HDD LED too, but hidden in the pic.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:23 PM PST

Sorry for bad photo quality. Its the best I could do with just a phone. Also, the motherboard manual doesn't help because it only shows the front connectors, and doesn't show what to put in the pins behind it. Its a TUF x570-plus (wifi) board

    edit: these are the plugs

edit: NEVERMIND I FOUND IT. it's in a different page of the motherboard manual I didnt look at. page 1-13 for yall in the future who may have the very specific problem I did. first two plugs in back left are + and then -. the next two after that are PWR_SW

2700x vs 3600 vs 9600kf for programming and light gaming

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 03:06 PM PST

I am currently having a 2600 (with msi b450m mortar) and want to do a upgrade since my friend wants my 2600. Thus, I will be upgrading to a new cpu and mobo.

My specs other than mobo and cpu:

    • HyperX Fury 2666 2*8
    • RX 590
    • multiple ssd hdd, which i believe is irrelavent to my question

I will be mainly using the pc for the following tasks:

    • android and ios development which requires compiling, simulator running (btw, I will be installing os x, but I heared intel cpu support it better), and heavy multitasking (IDE, simulator, compiler, 50+ tabs in chrome, discord, etc all at the same time)
    • light gaming such as pubg, r6s, and some racing games (I can already achieve 144hz with rx590 and 2600 for most games, so I don't think it will be a problem for those upgrade options)
    • light video editing, which usually takes <20 min for my current 2600

Here are my options and the cost:

    • 9600kf + msi z390 gaming edge ac for ~$370
    • 3600 ~$200
    • 2700x ~$170

    I mainly got 2 question,

    1. Will oc do a lot on amd cpu for things other than gaming? If so, what mobo would be good for oc 2700x and 3600. And I would like a mobo that could potentially hold a ~3800x ish level of cpu without oc for future upgrades. Thus, what board should I get?
    2. Based on the cost, which one has higher price performance ratio?

    Thanks in advance.

I want to change out my motherboard

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:57 PM PST

I built my first pc a while ago, and I've been enjoying it for about two years. The issue I'm having now is that the case is too large, and I want to make it more portable so I can bring it to college with me. I believe to change out the case I would more than likely have to change out the motherboard, but I'm not sure if I can just pull out the CPU as I really don't want to replace it. Is this possible? Or should I just try and find another solution?

Upgrading my PC from AMD FX 8320

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:40 PM PST

Hey guys, not on reddit to much but I will be checking back into this post to see if anyone helps!

    PC SPECS: CPU: AMD FX8320 8CORE 3.5GHZ

GPU: AMD R9 380 4GB graphics Not sure what other specs are needed.

I just got into PC gaming finally after I have been dying for a gaming PC and Its been 2 years now this Christmas... My PC is pretty good when it comes to all "AAA" games that are optimized. It struggles with games like "Squad" and "Escape From Tarkov" the games that don't have millions behind them to focus on optimizations. I know Optimizations have a lot to do with how well a game actually runs, no matter what system Specs you have, "Squad" runs horrible compared to the game it was actually modded after, "Battlefield" I can play BF all day long at 70-80 FPS with settings on high, but get 20fps during some "Squad" moments, along with some other games... my GPU isnt that bad, its a R9 380 4GB. I have 16GB RAM, and I think what slows my gaming down is my PCU. Which is what I am trying to upgrade. I have a AMD FX 8320 8CORE, tho it says its a 4 core with 8 logical processors... which I am still trying to understand the differences between logical processors and the core processors. I'm still really new to all this. I made the mistake of buying this PC from "Cyberpower" and it cost me like an extra $300 I didn't have to spend, Paid $700 for it and had to put a R9 380 4GB GPU, and a new huge PSU to give it enough power. The PCU is the only thing I haven't upgraded yet. As I said I am such a Noob to this that I paid a guy at a PC shop $80 to put in my Graphics Card because I thought it was super hard to do. I recently thought all you needed was to buy a CPU and installing it is easy, but I see you need a whole new motherboard? before you can replace the AMD FX 8320 with a Ryzen or something better. Sorry for the long paragraph, if anyone reads this please let me know if you can help give me some ideas or tell me what I need to do to upgrade my AMD FX 8320 8CORE. I am tight on money, so I won't be able to afford anything serious like the I9s and newer ones. I am looking for the cheapest upgrade possible, while it still being a noticeable upgrade for gaming.. which is 98% what my PC is used for unless my Grandmother needs to use it to pay bills and stuff

This is what it shows me ^

I was trying to clean up space on my ssd, and I think i deleted an important wifi driver. this is what it shows in device manager. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/492130469974900758/655773799484227594/20191215_085126.jpg?width=935&height=1247

There was some intel wifi driver too, and it was grayed out, and didnt let me enable it, so i thought i should uninstall and reinstall it, but i think i deleted it accidentally ( the no network issue was happening before i removed it though )

I have the z370 gaming 5 motherboard, and tried downloading the wifi drivers from their website (from my laptop, then used usb to put in on pc) but I have no idea what to do with these:

What CPU should I upgrade to?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:06 PM PST

I currently have a Ryzen 5 1400, and am looking to upgrade my CPU. I'd like to stay around 150-200$ for the new processor. Right now I'm looking at the 2700X or the 3600X. I have the ASROCK AB350M, so I know it has a compatible BIOS update. Anything else I should know about the upgrade, or whether either of those options are better than the other?

Ryzen 3600 with RTX 2080 Super - please critique the build

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:14 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/yYMZxr

I am upgrading from i5-2400 + GTX 660ti. The build will be for high end gaming, streaming with recording, and VR. I have a 1080p monitor specifically for one game I play, do you suggest I get a 1440p or 4k monitor since my setup should be able to handle that?

I don't have a previous version of Ryzen's CPUs, so I need a motherboard with BIOS ready out of the box. That's why I chose the Tomahawk MAX, but I am open to more premium boards if you know they'll work out of box. Please give a suggestion for motherboard if you have experience with it.

    Thanks.

Cheap, but decent mobo for Ryzen 3600, and RAM compatibility.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:13 AM PST

Hi!I'm planning to buy a Ryzen 5 3600, and i have some questions.

1: I want a cheap, but decent mobo. I want it to be microATX, and with B450M chipset. I found this: ASRock B450M Pro4. I think it's decent, but there are some things on it i don't need. I only need one Pci-e x16 slot, and i only want regular USB 3.1 ports on the back panel.

2: I have 2x8 GB RAM already, and i don't know if it's compatible with the processor or not. I heard there are some problems on AMDs side with this. The RAM modules are Kingston Hyperx HX424C15FB2/8.

3: A decent microATX casing. Unlike people nowadays, i don't want any RGB. So nothing fancy just a functionating microATX house, that has maybe 1 fan in it. It can be the cheapest as long as i can put 2-3 HDDs, and one SSD inside. I want something like Deepcool wave v2, but with a fan inside, and 2 3.1 ports on the front. I don't necesarry need a 5.25" i have a writer but i dont use it anymore.

    Thanks in advance. :)
