    Simple Questions - December 07, 2019

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

First time building a computer, 1000$ budget

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:20 AM PST

I'm thinking about building my first computer but I don't a lot about it. I made a list of parts with some internet search and need an opinion for them. My objective is to make a gaming computer for 1000$. I'm looking to play racing games (like Assetto Corsa Competizione) and action games (like Far Cry 5).

Unpopular opinion but still asking for advice: I prefer chicklet style keyboards to mechanicals, so is there a favorite or recommendation for gaming/productivity?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:33 AM PST

Edit: to clarify a little, the issue basically twofold: (a) I prefer the feel and typing of apple-style chicklet keys, and (b) I find that nearly all mechanical keyboards have keys that are just too close together for my fairly long fingers.

After I finished the build and powered it on, I got a code 55, which is ASUS for "memory not installed". I have tried the following, all to zero success:

    • Tried every combination of RAM slots possible with 1 and 2 sticks.

    • Reseated the CPU and confirmed no bent/broken pins. Ensured cooling block was secure, but not too tight.

    • Ensured memory DIMMs were not damaged nor were pins on the mobo.

    • Confirmed RAM is on ASUS' QVL.

    • Cleared CMOS, updated BIOS using the Flashback feature.

I assume it is possible both sticks of RAM are bad, but I find that improbable. Unfortunately I don't have any known good DDR4 sticks of RAM to test with. The RGB feature of the memory works, but that doesn't necessarily mean the memory chips themselves are good.

I've built many systems over the years, and this is the first time I've run into a situation like this and I'm not sure what else to try. This is why I'm posting here asking for assistance. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. If anyone needs more information, I am more than happy to provide it.

EDIT: I have tested booting with a known good stick of RAM and the issue persists.

My build is waiting on nothing other than a case, and I'm driven to insanity watching all these videos and reviews for days at this point

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 06:38 AM PST

    Hi all,

My build/upgrade consists of RTX 2070, Ryzen 7 3800x, Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi, 16 GB trident ram 3600 Cl16, EVGA PSU. I am ready to build except for the case.

This is my 2nd build (since 2015) and so I want to spice it up a bit by adding RGB (as opposed to my current build which lacks RGB completely). I also ideally want to take advantage of the USB-C front header that comes with my mobo. For a while I was sure I was going for the NZXT H510 elite, till I saw GamerNexus review about it's thermals. I really do want the front fan RGB design, but at the same time don't want to fry my parts. I will not be doing liquid cooling. I looked at the Phantex P400a, but it doesn't have a USB C and I read reviews about how its material is rather cheap. So I just don't know anymore. Can anyone guide me a little? Ive been watching and reading reviews for days at this point and it's very frustrating. Didn't realize the most difficult part to get for me would be the case.

What I'm looking for in a case: Transparent side panel, RGB fans, decent thermals, decent quality, USB-C/decent I/O.

I have a budget of up to $200

    Will FX-8320 3.5Ghz bottleneck a newer GPU?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:57 PM PST

RDR2 brought my 1050ti to its knees. I'm looking at a GTX 1660. Can I get away with staying cheap and just upgrading my GPU, or am I better off refreshing the entire PC? It looks like I"ll need a whole new board if I got a Ryzen CPU.

An 11 year olds first system

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 12:58 PM PST

Getting a pair of systems together for my kids, youngest is 11 and my budget is really £300 per system (with a little stretch.)

I have the SSD/hhd already so repurposing these.

I've tried to balance CPU/GPU as best I can. I keep wanting to go for the 3400G, but by going with the 3200G, I can include the xfx 570 8GB GPU.

My thoughts are that another 8GB ram is an easy future upgrade.

My other option is to drop the GPU, go for the 3400G with a future GPU upgrade.

I need a mouse for a *very* large hand

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:44 AM PST

So I use the Death Adder currently for FPS games and I do own a Logitech G600 MMO mouse, and while it is my favorite, the threaded cord for it is very stiff and the sharp edges of it are quite low and scrape against my mat. I play with very high sensitivity, so I just couldn't do that anymore. I do appreciate a place to put my ring finger and pinky, however.

My fingers are very, very long. The Death Adder is great save for the fact that the rest of my fingers and palm rest primarily on the gaming mat under the mouse, and inhibit a lot of movement from being smoother. Are there any mice you guys know of that may be as large as a G600 but have a much more expensive build quality for FPS gaming? I've just about had it with trying to play Siege with the Adder.

    EDIT

Thanks for all the comments guys! I'll seriously be considering all of your suggestions.

My hand is 8 inches in length and 4.5 in width

need help! new pc wont boot!!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST

hi! PC noob here! I need some help.

So basically I have built my very first pc. Only problem is, it refuses to boot. I looked up some troubleshooting videos and using the power of elimination I thought my cpu came dead on arrival. So I replaced my cpu and it still won't boot. The mother board leds are on which means it has power. I bought a extra fan on accident when ordering my parts and I have also tried using that fan for some reason to make sure it wasn't the other fans.

Can anyone give me some tips on what I should do? My cpu has intergrated graphics which I think means it will boot with or without a gpu (i have a gpu.) So I don't think its the gpu. I'll leave my parts down here just in case there are instructions specific to some parts :)

    Mother board: Prine b450-A

    CPU: ryzen 3 3200g

    GPU: xfx radeon rx 580

    power supply: 500 watt EVGA

    I think thats it!

anyway thanks for reading, anything helps!

edit: pretty sure it is the motherboard compatibility with the cpu, so I ordered a new one and will come back if there are any issues! thanks for help everyone!

    PC for competitive fortnite

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 02:12 PM PST

Hello, I was wondering if a GTX 1070 and I5 9400f would be good enough for competitive fortnite.

My main question is, can this pc run average 144 fps constantly? (I have a 144hz monitor)

and what would be the fps endgame?

I am also on a budget.

    PC kernel-power shutdown

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 03:46 PM PST

So I've been having some problems for a few weeks since I got a replacement PSU for my PC. What happens is whenever I'm playing a game, it will randomly shutdown without any warning. It usually shuts down much sooner with games that are more demanding. It has never happened before until I got that replacement PSU. The error message says "event id: 41 kernel power"

My question is can a PSU cause this error or is there something else that is causing this?

PC Build for Red Dead Redemption 2

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 03:22 PM PST

Hello everyone, I need some buying advice. I'm looking to switch from the PS4 Pro to a PC.

Essentially I'm looking for a PC that can play Read Dead Redemption 2 with mods at 4K.

I'm looking to connect the PC to my 4K Samsung TV and also run Plex.

Do you have an affordable PC or PC build that I can purchase?

    Am I doing something wrong?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 03:13 PM PST

First I would like to say thank you for clicking on this.

I decided to get my first gaming pc and just need a bit of help figuring it out. I will mainly be playing games such as Rocket League, Overwatch, PvZ 3, borderlands 3, fortnite, and other similar games and will also have to write essays and stuff for uni. I would like to be able to play most games at 1440p and as close to 144Fps as possible.

Also very important for me is that it is as quiet as possible so if you could help me with that it would be amazing!

My budget is £1400 and this is what I have so far. I am going to build this around Christmas and would like to know if it looks good!

VR build, Intel or AMD? I’m torn.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2019 11:12 AM PST

So I'm going to be building a PC mainly for the Valve Index, however I will still want AAA/multiplayer games at high frames/nice settings.

I've been reading through tons of posts on various subs and also looking at benchmarks and just can't decide between something like an i7-9700k or Ryzen 7 3700x.

Is the slight decrease in frames but increase basically everywhere else with the Ryzen worth it or should I go for all out gaming stability/frames with the i7, especially when it comes to the Index?
