Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:49 AM PST I recently installed PopOS, and then followed https://youtu.be/Yv_kQf37vU0 to install KDE. Upon reboot, I get the following message: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, (Receiver ID) device (1969:10al) error status/mask=00000000/00002000 [ 7] BadDLLP That message is repeated twice and is followed by: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS This screen shows for about 15 seconds and then goes black and stays that way. I'm pretty new to linux so I'm not sure if I did something wrong or how I can fix it. Is there anyone that can help me out? [link] [comments] |
NAS failed, can the data be rescued? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:14 AM PST Hi, I was having problems with a Terra Master NAS (2 drives, RAID 1) so i had to restart it at the wall. After reboot it returned to first time set up prompting me to set the admin password and choose a RAID config so it could format the drives. The partitions on the drive show as RAW in windows 10 so I ran teskdisk which gave me the results you see in the image. I setup a Linux VM and it can read the first partition but not the rest. Can my data be rescued? If so can you point me to a guide of some description? I consider myself tech savvy but all of my experience is windows based. Thanks in advance for any help. P.S. I tried Terra Master support but they were unhelpful. Edit. Thanks for everyone's help. I'm going to pick this up when I have access to a pc with enough SATA ports and power delivery so i can run a Live CD and connect both drives at the same time. These Dell machines we use at work have bare bones motherboards/PSU with exactly enough resources to run a single HDD. [link] [comments] |
Removing and installing different Linux distros... Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:30 AM PST Hello Linux people. What is the correct way to install or remove Linux distros alongside Windows? I don't want to break anything. There are so many distros and they are very interesting to me. I want to learn more and test different ones out. The last time I played with Linux I ended up messing up my boot config data when I tried removing a distro. Actually, I think I really messed it up when I tried to remove the grub bootloader. What are some tips to keep in mind when playing around with Linux installation/removals so that things stay intact? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:51 AM PST Got a learning requirement for a possible promotion in work into the Linux team but I've got to know about webservers, databases and mail servers on Linux and I'm finding it hard to find any "beginners guide" to these I have gone through my redhat admin for some grounding but wondered if there was anything on these specifically. Don't mind if they are product specific or a general overview of them as a whole Databases - MySQL, Apache, Percona Webservers - Apache, Nginx, php-farm Mail - Postfix, Qmail and Sendmail Thanks [link] [comments] |
Can't format usb stick with Tails on it. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST Tails no longer needed so I'm trying to format this 16gb Kingston usb stick, without success. Google is no help. Any ideas? I've got lubuntu 1810 and Windows 7. [link] [comments] |
What does the Windows Subsystem for Linux lack that a full on Linux system has? Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:53 PM PST A standalone installation of Ubuntu takes about 965MB according to Google. But the Ubuntu app available on the Windows store is only around 250MB. So there must be a lot of stuff missing: what are those things? So far I've been able to do pretty much everything I'd do normally on my Linux machine, but I'm not a power user so that's not saying much [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:08 AM PST As a Software Developer the road to success can be a long and complex path. This is especially true for Developers in their first years of learning which can find it hard to stick to a direct learning path as the amount of topics one can learn can seem very overwhelming as new Frameworks and programming languages is being introduced on a monthly basis. But what one most understand is that becoming a Software developer is very different from a formal education, where one can rely on what is being taught at a college or university as the one and only secure path to success. But with Software development the real success comes from what is being learned outside of the classroom as most of the knowledge comes from self-teaching and endless hours of practicing ones skills. Defining A Learning PathBut where does one starts? Young developers often suffer from the problem of changing direction which in the end results in one being master of nothing and thereby a generalist. This often happens when one is solely focused on wanting to try every new framework, looks at what programming languages gives the highest paycheck or is the most popular as these statistics can change multiple times within a year. It's therefore important before one starts learning to have a clear path which is built up around the type of career one is most interested in. Nowadays these can be divided into the following popular career paths:
Each of the above career paths has a different focus and it's therefore important that one understands the differences between them. Once a path has been chosen based on a particular interrest or personal goals, it's time to lay down the exact steps that will lead to success within the chosen area. Liked MPC-HC and MPC-BE back on Windows. Dont like VLC on Linux. Any options? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:41 AM PST Never ever have I had issues with MPC-HC(BE) on Windows. Have already had a few audio and subtitle syncing issues on VLC occasionally, also dont like some of the controls (cant pause VLC with mouse click on screen, some other controls MPC did better...) Most importantly, MPC had this really nice inbuilt subtitle finder feature. If I ever had a movie or series that needed subtitles, I never had to open up a web browser and google for subtitles and then fiddle with the various versions and spend time looking. I could just open a subtitle download window within MPC where it would source subs for the particular movie from a predefined database (or databases) and I'd just pick one. Or another one if the first one for a different version of thst movie and was out of sync. Any such tools on Linux? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:26 AM PST Currently I use a root partition and a swap partition, but wanted to separate partitions more. Is there some type of standard to follow? How do I know how I should go about this? Is there documentation someone can point me to? Every tutorial I find explains how to make partitions, but I've yet to find any guidelines on how to size various partitions or which would be most important to include. Thanks in advance for any insights. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:45 PM PST Back in 2016 linux mint website was hacked and hackers injected their own iso files which contained malware. Apart from installing malware injected iso, if someone installs authenticated original iso and installs the os, will the hackers still manage to take over the system? Or will they be able to access my files or modify softwares? Overall, how secured the Linux mint is? [link] [comments] |
Not able to install Elementary OS (based on Ubuntu) on USB stick Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST So I've tried several ways to approach this, but with no success. I want to use Elementary OS (it looks really good and smooth), but I don't want to use up any space on my laptop, so I'd rather install it on my usb that has 32GB of space. I've tried this method: http://www.houseoflinux.com/installation/how-to-install-linux-on-a-flash-drive-with-virtualbox/ The result is that it installs successfully, but when I click the reboot button or just shut down the machine, the usb is not recognized by windows and it is not listed as a bootable on boot screen. I've tried installing it even by live booting Elementary OS from usb and trying to install to itself. I've even tried to install from one usb to another usb before. Also I don't have a cd drive or any other storage devices to use. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:15 PM PST If this is the wrong location to ask for help like this, please let me know where I need to go. I'm afraid I may have lost everything. I have a dual-boot of Windows and Linux Mint Cinnamon, and I booted Windows to shrink it's partition. After doing so, my computer boots to the grub CLI, and everything that I Google isn't helping. I've seen things like "do ls (hd0,1)XYZ", but my files don't look anything like those that other people have. I don't know what I'm looking for, and I don't know what to do with it. Now Windows won't even boot when I type exit, either. I tried to live boot from a usb I have with Mint on it, but when I went into gparted it didn't show any of my Linux partitions, only Windows. I installed repair-boot, but that didnt help either. Please help, I had so many photos and things in Mint, and I'm scared I've lost it all. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate any help you can give me. [link] [comments] |

Mid-2009 MacBook Pro Install (novice question) Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:29 AM PST Hello,I've never used or installed Linux any of my computers, but have an old MacBook Pro (Mid-2009 model) that I only use for word processing that I would like to do so on. It may sound shallow but i cannot bear looking at Apple OS anymore and want to switch to Linux just to make the simple tasks i perform on this laptop a bit more pleasant. A few questions: Are there any risks of doing this on such an old apple laptop? Will I have to dual boot the system (i.e always have a USB drive plugged in), or can I install it on my main (C) drive? Any extra tips/info that you think i should be aware of would be great. Thinking of installing Mint, but again other suggestions are welcome. Thanks [link] [comments] |

How can I change to a new static or dynamic IP address? Ubuntu 19.04 Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:19 AM PST |
Posted: 08 Dec 2019 07:43 PM PST I have for years found the hobby of helping people on this subreddit enjoyable and wanted to offer you all something extraordinarily special for December 2019 to aid you with your struggles adjusting to and learning to love penguins! As some of you know i've been a stalwart supporter of Gentoo Linux since 2003 due to the educational merits and flexibility afforded by "baking your own binaries" and configuring your own install to suit your own hardware or purpose. This is great but the build time required to compile all that software does dissuade some people from making an attempt. I precompiled a Gentoo Linux "stage4" tar.gz base system install and released it on this sub last month however I wanted to offer something really special for December. I began building a new amdgpu gentoo install last week for a spare pc build but this also presented an opportunity to consider providing something new for you guys and gals! I considered releasing an easy update to last months build but why give away one half completed build when i can give away three complete GPU specific configured system builds with full support for 32 bit applications then add support for docker, qemu, lutris, steam, wine staging 4.21 and more! Added bonus for you folks with newer AMD RX 5700XT graphics cards the amdgpu build includes mesa 19.2.7 and the wine staging build for amdgpu includes vulkan direct12 support. Built from a fresh Gentoo stage 3 systemd tarball dated December 3rd 2019. The finest builds assembled to date i've released to the general public :)
Gentoo Linux releases system install base systems as compressed archives that include the bare minimum software necessary for Linux to reproduce itself and any other software program. Historically Gentoo used to allow users to progress to this point by building up to several "stages" from stage 1 to stage 3 then later settled on only providing stage3. Stage4 is terminology Gentoo Linux users frequently use to refer to only the filesystem contents that comprises any completed and archived installation. Stage4 Gentoo system backup largely replaces the install stage choices offered the gentoo install handbook
As many people have discovered that attempt using Linux software configuration can be inflexible or incompatible after it's been prepackaged for distros such as Ubuntu or Mint or you pick one and no avenue to recompile that software is provided to adapt that software for only your own hardware configuration to "fine tune" and eliminate consistency conflicts or eliminate an overabundance of software features having been supported. *** These builds will require some customization and additional config to become bootable if you choose to proceed with further system install configuration *** New Gentoo Linux 17.1 December 2019 build details
The current precompiled stage4 tarballs can be downloaded from my Google drive Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! [link] [comments] |
