Lost USB files over a year. Recovery?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:20 AM PST

So I lost/damaged all the files off my USB stick that were probably deleted over 1-2 years ago. Is there anyway to recover those files? Had some special memories in it :(

Strange MacBook issue that only happens after I start my computer after it ran out of battery. It goes away after I restart it again and it runs normally just very strange. Sometimes it’s the whole screen sometimes just the dock and menu bar.

Constant BSODs with new hardware, can't identify causes

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:03 AM PST

    System specs

    AMD Ryzen 3700x

    Msi Mortar Max B450

    Sapphire Nitro+ 5700xt

    Crucial P1 1tb m.2

    Geil Dragon Ram 2x4gb 3000mhz CL15-17-17-35

    Cooler Master silent pro 600w

Got a new cpu and gpu, am4 systems don't support Windows 7 so I figured i have to upgrade to Windows 10 now. Problem is I can't get the system stable at all. When the system is cold it is often stable for a while but eventually starts crashing all over the place. Various error codes but most common is MEMORY MANAGEMENT. At first I was convinced it was my old SATA SSD that was faulty so I bought a new m.2 drive, but that hasn't seemed to help anything.

All signs point to it being a memory or memory compatibility issue; I've tried loosening the timings and downclocking but that doesn't seem to help. Turning XMP seems to work better than any manual adjustments. However 12 passes with Memtest86 and a few Windows memory diagnostics have turned up 0 issues. Sfc /scannow comes back clean as well. I also used this memory for ~3 years in my old socket 1151 system with no issues whatsoever.

I can mostly rule out airflow/temp issues, havent seen gpu or cpu over 50 degrees. However it seemed more stable when I was booting from the test bench than when it was all put together.

I've been struggling with this for over a week and nothing i do seems to make it any better. Multiple windows installs, formatted windows partition, etc. I have no experience with Windows 10 however so I feel like I'm flying blind a bit.

    What I have tried:

-running memtest86, windows memory diagnostics, sfc /scannow - all found no issues

-downclocking memory to 2666mhz, and separately loosening the timings to CL17-19-19-35

-formatting windows partition and reinstalling windows

    What I will try next:

-replacing new GPU with old lower power hungry GPU to see if it's an issue with power supply.

after that I'm at a bit of a loss. at this point it seems like it is a hardware issue. could I have a faulty motherboard? how can I test this?

    Busted hard drive?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 06:19 PM PST

Got a Samsung 850 evo about a year or so ago. My computer is about 7 years old I think. Recently I get to the windows logo boot screen and it just hangs. If I restart the pc with the button on the front of my case, it boots successfully. Always works the 2nd time I boot, almost never the first. I reloaded windows and it worked for a day or so then same thing. This is not the first time I've had to reload windows on this drive due to faults and performance issues. Did I get a lemon?

16gb ram ddr3 AMD fx series Gts 450 Psu 500 watt? 2nd mechanical drive Corsair h50i

Yea it's fucking old. I'm getting a laptop for christmas but I'd kinda like a backup.

    Games crashing/ possible gpu downfall

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:27 PM PST

I have reason to believe my gpu is dying, I bought it used to begin with, it will run perfectly fine for a while then the game I'll be playing will crash, the cpu (ryzen 2200g) was new so was the motherboard, the ram was used for around a year, did some testing the ram turned out fine, and my psu was very old and potentially failing (now I'm not sure) but I upgraded to another 500 watt psu.

I tried minecraft and it ran just fine, but apex legends and destiny 2 were iffy to say the least, destiny 2 would crash after I got to the character select screen and apex would crash after being in for around 2mins.

I ran my 1060 in this build, to no avail, I got literally the same results. At this point I'm just confused, I have used both my 1060 and my 570 in my main rig and they both work just fine. Any ideas or thoughts are much appreciated.

    Brightness/ contrast issue

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 03:26 PM PST

A couple of days ago whilst away from the PC, Radeon did some kind of auto update. The result for me was that my brightness and contrast had gone bad. I tried a spare monitor in case it was a coincidental issue. Problem was the same. After doing a bit of searching, I decided to do a system restore and this resolved the problem. However, whilst away from the PC again, the Radeon updated again and the problem returned. This time the earlier system restore point wasn't available.

The picture controls on the monitor do not have enough latitude to resolve it that way.

During my retirement, I have spent many (many!)hours on this site restoring/ 'photoshopping' for Redditors and this issue is driving me crazy.

I'm not very good with the tech side (hopeless) but here are some details: W10.... AMD A4-6210 with AMD Radeon R3. graphics.

I have contacted Radeon support but not holding my breath.

Any help would be much appreciated.
