Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:35 PM PST Hey so I just finished a basic Linux class that was prepping for Linux+ and LPI certs. I did well each chapter but the final made me realize I wasn't as good as I thought. I'm transition to an associate in Cybersecurity that requires two follow up Linux classes, and I just want advice on what to focus on. BASH scripts really threw me off, I never dealt with programming even on a basic level. Also process management was difficult. Everything else I felt I had a grasp on with my previous experiences and could understand the bigger picture. Now I'm sitting at my PC with Virtualbox open and centOS and Ubuntu open. Without the book giving me things to do, I'm not sure how to practice. I have a few ebooks from Humblebundle I might use to work threw some stuff, but I don't know how to practice the basics effectively. I'm not trying to become a master of this very fast, but I want to learn for certs, my degree, and personal life. Any tips on what people/companies/certs expect when your resume says "Knowledgeable with Linux" [link] [comments] |
Installation of AMD Radeon graphics Driver 530 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Posted: 14 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST I want to enable the use of dedicated GPU in my Laptop which runs on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Currently, only the intel integrated graphics card is detected by Ubuntu. I want to run tensorflow computations in GPU, so I'm trying to enable the Amd graphics card. I have tried the instructions provided over the internet, but the trial is not successful and the installation of amdgpu-pro driver ended with an error stating dkms failed to run in the current kernel version. So, I will be thankful to anyone who has successfully done this. [link] [comments] |
What distro for computer illiterates? Posted: 14 Dec 2019 08:58 AM PST I'm looking for a good "fire and forget" distro for people who are barely capable of powering a computer on/off. I often help people with their computing problems, and they usually tell me they want Windows because 'they know it' (which isn't true, they simply saw Windows interface in other computers, but fail to understand that any OS has a mouse pointer that clicks on icons to launch programs). Installing Windows is a pain to me because in one month everything will go to shit and they will be full of malware, adware, etc. (The Real Windows Experience), and I will be summoned to fix the horror. I've always thought Debian to be good in these cases because it's stable and it's easy to upgrade releases, but it's not "noob friendly" in that you can't avoid using the command line from time to time. I tried with Manjaro because of the rolling release model and all software in the AUR, but it tends to break. Ubuntu's software center is not super easy for noobs (some complained). Some people appreciated Mint because of its software center, update manager and polished UI, but Mint had some security issues in the past and this worries me. So long story short, I need a fully automated distro for computer illiterates with strong emphasis on the GUI (software center, updates center, settings manager), that can be managed (for better or worse) without touching the CLI after the initial setup, and if it's easy to upgrade between releases that would be a huge plus. Posted: 14 Dec 2019 10:16 AM PST I'm a college student who wants reliable and stable but high customizable OS. As you may guess I'm switching from Windows but I have previous experience with Linux. I'm currently testing Debian w/KDE Plasma but I feel like Arch is much more customizable but I don't know how to install or configure it. Any thoughts? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How to create a persistent USB Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:46 PM PST So I've created a persistent usb with rufus, but it is not persistent. I've found a guide to this bug, to add persistent to grub.cfg
But the problem is that when I add persistent before boot=, it doesn't boot at all. [link] [comments] |
Alpine Configuration Framework not connecting? Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:38 PM PST I'm using virtualbox trying to connect to my Alpine Linux VM but it's refusing to connect. (I'm attempting to connect between 2 vms, one windows 10, one alpine linux) I can ping from either side and the hostname is properly configured, as well as the default gateway. Any thoughts on what could be wrong? did I set it up wrong? [link] [comments] |
finding the best linux OS for my laptop Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:11 PM PST here are my laptops specs https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03900498/ basically i was running windows 10 for a while and tho it works , its very laggy and slow, i had linux mint for a while but switched it back over cause i needed a windows laptop for a few projects at school. my last linux os was mint, and tho it did work fine there was times when it to went felt slow. i know its an older laptop and only has 4 gigs of ram but i want to keep it around what linux os would best suited for web browsing , youtube and facebook games (for my mom) that works out the box with out much fiddling. i know ubuntu and mint are probably the best options but somethings felt off with mint imo also would any one be able to tell me what ram upgrades i could do? i honestly cant tell and the only way i know of would be remove the ram in the laptop right now but to do that requires a full tear down of the pc. and if im gonna do that i feel i should get an SSD to here is how hard it is for me to upgrade my ram to , which really sucks [link] [comments] |
window decoration/window titlebar Posted: 14 Dec 2019 12:42 PM PST running ubuntu 19.10, been playing with gnome tweaks, etc. i'm looking to make some status bars but i have no clue what Sway, i3, etc are/how to use them or install them or if i even need to. I read info from their sites and saw their purpose/mission but honestly i just want to have aesthetically cool status bars without window decoration. i saw some applications like Polybar but i just can't get it to work. an example is using tty-clock but without the window title bar or htop without the window bar. i'm probably just trying to run before i can walk, but any help or advice would be appreciated! Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:59 AM PST Any recommendations for a Bluetooth adapter (PC doesn't have existing Bluetooth). I'm ideally looking for a USB dongle-style adapter. However, most of the ones I find online only list their Windows compatibility. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:06 PM PST What's the main differences between installing the latest Linux Mint Cinnamon compared to installing the latest Ubuntu desktop and put the Mint Cinnamon desktop on it ? I know that when we do a htop command, Ubuntu fresh install always seem to be running idle by using a lot more ram than Mint, do you guys know why ? is Ubuntu a Bloated Distro ? Also it seem to me that the Mint desktop run much faster/optimized than KDE ? Isn't Ubuntu running a higher newer kernel than Mint even if Mint is based on Ubuntu ? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 14 Dec 2019 09:50 AM PST Hello! It has been a long ride. From PHP to SQL to ELECTRON, it has been a constant set of hurdles being thrown at me. Just because I dared to dream about using web technologies for a desktop app with filesaving functionality. Portable, easy, and serverless. But now I did a full circle. I actually use Linux, and I would be honored to make an app for it. Because it will be FOSS, obviously. Though, it would also be fun if other people could use it. I just made a hellognome file, and it works nicely. I have A LOT of questions. Please answer any if you can. So let's go.
Thank you very much! I searched for solutions for a portable server-less database or json wrapper for a desktop app that uses web technologies for a long time. And in one day, I learned about both IndexedDB (edit: in the meantime I found out that this is just like localStorage on steroids, but it is equally useless and volatile as a normal and reliable way to save files locally wherever the user specifies) and GNOME. And now I have possibilities. Hopefully I can learn more, and have people point me in the right direction. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Dec 2019 03:43 AM PST I'm setting an alpine linux vm up and I'm not sure how to sign it into the network so that it properly connects. I'm trying to check the wiki but i'm struggling to find the right answer or understand what needs to be done. Any help is appreciative. [link] [comments] |
A USB drive with persistent storage is faster than an oldish HDD? Posted: 14 Dec 2019 05:45 AM PST Hi. Someone else here asked about a "live" (yet with persistent storage) USB. That made me wonder: is it faster than an old laptop's HDD? It might be a better option for me as well if this is the case. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Any set-top box running Linux? Posted: 14 Dec 2019 08:51 AM PST Hi, this could be a stupid question but I am posting here as it is for noob questions, please. How is a set-top box different from an Android box or chromecast? Does any set-top box run Linux? I have never had a set-top box at home but have seen at friends' homes. If I understood correctly, some set-top boxes can also run a web server and support some apps? Please share some insights. [link] [comments] |
How to disable Secure Boot and CSM? Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:40 AM PST Hi, i'm trying to boot my hackintosh usb, and for that I need to disable some settings in the BIOS. I have a really old motherboard Asus P7P55D, which only has BIOS, no UEFI. But all the tutorials are using some sort of windows 10 firware management menu, which, using linux, i obviously don't have. So how do I disable Secure Boot and CSM on my mobo? I looked all over the setting in the BIOS but couldn't find these two options. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

[Advice} Linux learning/training session Posted: 14 Dec 2019 03:40 AM PST I've been trying to break into learning Linux command line (Ubuntu to be exact). Unfortunately, the machine I currently own does not have enough memory to load a virtual machine on it, so I've been trying to make as much use of WSL as I can. I've been taking courses for about two months now and feel like I have a well understanding of how to manage/move around the directory system, and also have an understanding on user management. However, I feel like I am not practicing enough and start to forget some of the initial things I learned. I am currently working at a service desk roll where the only thing we use similar to CL is Powershell in order to remotely start a session to a remote machine and install software, and PuTTy to reset or unlock unix passwords. Other than that we get no work/practice time on CL. I am hoping that someone here could help and not sure if this exists, with some sort of online hands on training or environment where I can get additional practice. More to this I am looking for some sort of real work day to day tasks with no indications and just have me try to figure out how to solve these issues. Learning resources I am currently using are Udemy, Enki (mobile app), youtube. Thanks in advance for all the help!! BTW, I am new to reddit, just opened the account and came directly to post. Will be checking additional posts on this subreddit that may be related to my same request/question. [link] [comments] |
